The Fire of '98

The Fire of '98

Project Overview

Hello! This casting call is for an independent horror-shooter video game tentatively titled "The Fire of '98".

WHAT IS THE "THE FIRE OF '98"?

"The Fire of '98" is a short, free-to-play, independent First Person shooter currently in development by me! The game deals with themes of institutional corruption, systemic injustice, and supernatural entities.

In The Fire of '98 you play as a rookie police officer, assigned by your superiors to help raid the old city block that was destroyed in the Fire of '98, where a criminal has allegedly fled into. Unfortunately, an accident happens on your way in which traps you inside the tenements, leaving you alone to find your way out. While inside, the player comes across the audio logs of a police officer who similarly found themselves trapped within the tenements. Throughout the course of the game the player follows the trail left by this officer and slowly begin to unravel the dark secret behind what happened back in '98..

The game will be released on itch.io for free, and it's possible I'll decide to port it to Steam afterward depending on my workload in the future. It's going to be a short experience (~1 hour long) and is mostly an experiment in branching out into developing game genres I'm not super familiar with developing. For some work-in-progress footage to get a sense of the game and how your voice will be used, please see this video clip - and check out the bio for more information about me and what I do!

WHAT AM I LOOKING FOR?

I'm looking to fill the role of the police officer that the character discovers the audio logs of as they venture into the abandoned city block.

  • The ability to convey fear and emotion
    • The single most important thing for this role is the ability to really communicate emotions, especially fear.

  • Clean recordings
    • I'd like something that sounds intermediate to professional quality, with as little background noise or alteration required on my part as possible for it to be usable!

  • Retake Flexibility
    • As of writing this, the script is only partially written. While I don't anticipate any major changes occurring after recordings have been submitted and I promise to do my utmost to minimize the amount of work you need to do, the ability to retake some recordings in the event a line or two changes during production would be excellent. I'm also willing to compensate for additional recordings if need be!

  • Ability to submit through Google Drive links
    • I'll likely be organizing these lines into a Google Spreadsheet (for my own organizational sanity!), so being able to upload your lines to a Google Drive and submit them to my through sharing links is the ideal delivery method.

  • Bonus: Away from mic
    • There are a couple lines which may work best if it sounds like the character is turning their head away from the microphone mid-sentence, so this is something I'd love to see if you think you could make that effect come through!

This role will remain posted until the deadline to give time for all submissions.

Please let me know if you have any comments, questions or concerns about the role and thank you for your time!

Paid: Flat Rate 200 USD
Role assigned to: TaylorJo

Constable Jessie Harding should sound like someone who doesn't have years and years of experience being a police officer, but isn't entirely fresh-faced either. They know their protocol and how to talk and act like a police officer as part of the work culture. In normal, low-stress situations they might come across as casual, bored or sarcastic. When afraid, they struggle to hold their casual composition and might stammer or whimper their words. They might be used to catching fugitives or writing parking tickets, but not dealing with the supernatural.

This character is written as cisgender, but their gender will be changed to man or woman to best match the selected speaker's masculine/feminine quality.

  • [Neutral] Hey Sarge. Just doing another one of these training recordings. We got a call about a fugitive slumming in the old city block - the old one that burned down in the Fire of '98.

  • [Whispering, horrified] Oh fuck, oh fuck...I just shot someone...or something, I-I dunno. It was dark and I told them to stop moving and then...those eyes...holy fuck...those eyes.

  • [Muted but angry tone, distressed] Hey! This is Constable Harding, answer me dammit! Come on guys this really isn't funny anymore!
