The Master Mev (Team Awesome Arc, Chapters 1-11)

Yeah, that's fair. I have changed into something. Something that can be kinda scary, depending on who you are. You're my pal though, my pet, and I don't want this thing that I've become, it's called a 'master mev', to come between us. I still love you. I'll still feed you, and my house is still your home. I'll take care of you like I've been doing. I hope you can get used to this new me. I'm warming up to it now that my friends have a plan to help me.

(Context: This dialogue is preceded by the the words, "She nodded though pained." Being a master mev means Rainbow Dash is different at night in subtle ways, such as having an innate preference to wear her vampire fangs and being more hungry for magic. She know that she is and feels different at night so is setting aside some time with Tank to reveal this fact. She shows him she can flash her eyes to red at will too though she doesn't go as far as showing she can change her wings to bat wings. Tank is initially scared when he does, in fact, sense the difference upon touching her. Rainbow Dash gives him this speech to ease his feelings, which does work.)

Whoa, all of you, you need to stop with the whole 'wrong' thing, okay? Just chill. Something is different, but it's not wrong. Twilight knows what's going on, and so do I. She's fine, alright. Some stuff happened this weekend, and we're working on it, but everything's fine. It's also kinda personal and between friends. Got it?

(Context: Ocellus has noticed Twilight Sparkle is not using magic and asking if Rainbow Dash knows anything about it. Rainbow does since she was the one who ate Twilight's magic as her first meal. Twilight's magic is temporarily gone and will return later. The act was done with Twilight's full knowledge and permission, which is an important thing for master mevs to do during the day. When Ocellus gets excited that Rainbow Dash knows what's "wrong", without being informed of all of the above yet, Rainbow grows defensive since her transformation is still so new to  her, and she's doing everything she's supposed to be doing to handle for it.

The dialogue for this line is preceded with the following:

They all looked at each other, then Gallus. The young griffon finally added, "We were just worried that something in general is wrong. I mean, is there a reason she's not using magic? She didn't lose it, did she?"

Rainbow tapped a hoof to her chin. "How can I explain this?"

"So you do know what's wrong!" said an eager Ocellus.)

It just seems important enough to have been noted in the book we have. The closest it comes to mentioning changelings is that I'll have to do business with other magical creatures. Then again, that book is super old. I'm not sure we're a commonly known thing. None of us ever heard of mevs before.

(Context: Rainbow Dash, Starlight Glimmer, and Fluttershy* are talking about Ocellus not being able to take on Rainbow's form, and Rainbow guesses that other changelings would be affected the same way without knowing why since mevs do not seem to be a commonly known thing. This line is not intended to have any particularly strong emotion behind it but the subtle ones are along the lines of contemplative and speculative.

*These three are mevs at this point in the story (start of chapter 10), but the overall pack is still taking shape.)

Mevs are magic-eating vampires. There are two types: master and fledgling. However, sometimes master mevs are simply called 'mevs' because they are the ones other creatures need to concern themselves with far more than the fledglings and will be the main topic of this book.

Master mevs relish in their power and can even sense and feed off of fear. They are not inherently evil creatures, but their night-time behavior can certainly leave that impression. They do like being vampires after all. This seemingly evil nature is far more style than substance, except during a berserk. It includes, and is by no means limited to, bombastic laughter, devilish grins, hisses, snarls, and wide-eyed thrills. It even has a name: nocturnivlair, a combination of the words "nocturnal", "evil", and "flair" respectively.

Masters do not expect or need to be addressed by title every time you speak with them, however, it is generally a good practice. They are more accommodating to business when respected and will use respectful titles in response.

The sooner Rainbow has her first meal, the better. Don't forget. You can start doing research that the book you have doesn't cover. First ever alicorn feed for a master mev. This whole thing is a brand new experience to be thoroughly documented and researched. 

(Context: Starlight Glimmer is convincing Twilight Sparkle to let Rainbow Dash eat her magic as her first meal. Twilight is a little hesitant since the book on mevs has no mention of alicorns at all. This is the later part of that response.

Full line:

"As a fellow expert on magic, I can tell you that it means you'd help Rainbow make a really strong pack. If you're so scared, just let her eat your magic now and see what happens. I'll bet you ten bits the worst that happens is you recover twice as fast as a unicorn would. I'll be here and still have my magic. If one of us still has magic, we can get through the recovery time. The sooner Rainbow has her first meal, the better. Don't forget. You can start doing research that the book you have doesn't cover. First ever alicorn feed for a master mev. This whole thing is a brand new experience to be thoroughly documented and researched."

Oh, well, it's, you know...(trails off, clears throat) Actually, yes, I would like to be first too.

(Context: With Twilight's magic still expected back early as Starlight and Rainbow guess it would be, Rainbow Dash is readying to make her first fledgling. The first one has to be a unicorn, so it is down to Rarity or Starlight. Rarity has just said she would be honored to be first if that's alright with Starlight, and this is Starlight admitting that actually she would like to be the first fledgling as well.)

It depends on the situation and what the order actually is. Of course I should follow her on actually becoming a fledgling. I'm sure I could question or defy orders for silly little things like boring chores she doesn't want to do, if that's your concern. 

(Context: This is the later part in response to a question from Applejack ( "Reckon you feel the same way?"). Starlight is answering Applejack's concern that she felt compelled to follow orders before even being bit by Rainbow Dash after Rainbow points out Starlight's willingness to become a fledgling days ago.

Full line:

"Yeah, I do. It falls perfectly in line with everything else we know. It seems the willingness of the meal is a significant factor in the master's magic when not berserk. Fledglings are supposed to be a strong support for maintaining control. Plus, I was already offering to help Rainbow learn about magic as a mentor to help with the pack before we took this step tonight. It depends on the situation and what the order actually is. Of course I should follow her on actually becoming a fledgling. I'm sure I could question or defy orders for silly little things like boring chores she doesn't want to do, if that's your concern.")

Twilight said you should read this. See if you can make it through the night. The hunger should disappear during the day, so you can go about that as usual. Meet us for breakfast tomorrow at the castle. She's inviting the girls and sent a letter to Princess Celestia. Even if you do eat magic from a unicorn, the loss is not permanent, but you should still not eat any tonight. You'll find out more in the book.

(Context: Fluttershy says this to Rainbow Dash near the end of chapter 1. After Rainbow Dash becomes a master mev, and not knowing that's what it's called yet, she turns to Fluttershy for help to go talk to Twilight for her since she's afraid she might put Twilight in danger, being so hungry for magic. Fluttershy does that for Rainbow, goes to Rainbow's house after talking to Twilight, brings the book, and tells Rainbow Dash the dialogue above.)

Everyone, please. We're overwhelming her. Rainbow just got done telling us she's like a baby. A cute, cuddly, fanged, different-kind-of-wings-whenever-she-wants baby. Such a fascinating creature.

(Context: The other ponies are speculating and asking Rainbow Dash things she can't answer about her new powers. She is growing more and more irritated. Fluttershy comes to her defense. The dialogue for this line is described in text as: "Everyone, please." Fluttershy spoke up. "We're overwhelming her. Rainbow just got done telling us she's like a baby. A cute, cuddly, fanged, different-kind-of-wings-whenever-she-wants baby," Fluttershy lifted herself up with a smile. "Such a fascinating creature," she cooed.)

Rainbow Dash needs my help. Of course I'll be in her pack. If anything, you'll now have protection from mevs, not having to fear them. In fact, we actually wanted your help with something tonight if you're not too busy.

(Context: Fluttershy is talking to Discord. Discord actually finds mevs scary but is mildly comforted and hopeful when Fluttershy says that the group of friends, including Fluttershy herself, are helping Rainbow Dash form a pack.)

Hmm, well like Pinkie Pie, once you reach your magical number of six and assuming indeed this master and servant thing is how you describe it...you know what I find acceptable I trust.

(Context: Rarity is saying she will be a fledgling if Rainbow Dash can get six willing total since the number is significant to forming a full pack. The "master and servant" thing in question is how fledglings are regarded to the master mev, but a master mev has an equal obligation to take care of fledglings. It is not all take and no give but an advised approach in how the master handles things since it is a designation. Rainbow likens it to being picked for a job that suggests she get help from her friends and how the group already helps Twilight with the map and school.)

I think Rainbow and Fluttershy make some really good points. Let's take baby steps and just wait out these three days first. We can sort out a first fledgling thing later. Do remember Pinkie, I'd want Rainbow to have six ponies willing to be in the pack and so far, Twilight and Applejack are still not sure. Right, girls?

(Context: The first fledgling has to be a unicorn so will be either Rarity or Starlight Glimmer. Rarity wishes to see more unfold with Twilight having only recently allowed her magic to be eaten. She is only mildly hesitant at this point and will actually want to be first later on.)

Perhaps you could keep doing that while I lie on the floor. 

(Context: This is right after Rarity's first exchange of magic with Rainbow Dash and having just become a fledgling. Rainbow's started petting Rarity's mane, which Rarity likes very much. This dialogue is described as "Rarity's lips trembled as she squeaked out her desire.")

Hmm, well, I reckon somepony else will have a turn before me so we can find out then.

(Context: Rainbow Dash is asking if Applejack would be one of her fledglings. Applejack is concerned that the bond between a master mev and a fledgling is described as master and servant. Earlier in the conversation, Rainbow openly admitted it is weird, but it is supposed to be mutual, that the master has an obligation in turn to take care of fledglings. She likens it to being picked for a job that suggests she get help with her friends and how the group already helps Twilight with the map and school. She has no fledglings yet. This line is Applejack figuring they can see how it all works once Rainbow has an actual fledgling before committing to becoming one herself.)

I like it, makes me sound all fire-powered. Do we...do we get special powers like that? I know we somehow do something for keeping you all calm, but the rest is kind of murky for me. 

(Context: Applejack is talking to Rainbow Dash after being given the title Fyra, which sounds like "fire" with an "a" sound at the end. She has just become Rainbow's fourth fledgling.)

(Actors can say "ya all calm" instead of "you all calm" and "kinda" instead of "kind of,". I can see her using either version in both cases. Please DO NOT say "ya'll calm". My own use of "ya'll", written or spoken, is definitively plural).

Not trying to rain on your parade, Master, but Team Awesome really wouldn't be a problem, even if it is obvious. It's very you. I know you like it more than 'Formidable Lightning' without you having to tell me...or all of us for that matter. 

(Context: The pack is meeting after being fully formed. Rainbow Dash wants to give it a name and offered up "Formidable Lightning," confessing she didn't want it to just be Pack or Team Mev and thought including "awesome" would be too obvious. Applejack is speaking for herself and the rest of the group that Team Awesome will do just fine, knowing it suits Rainbow Dash.)

(Actors can say "I know ya like it" instead of "I know you like it," though "It's very you," should still be "you" instead of "ya").

I do! I do! I don't mind. I'd make a great fledgling. Oh wait, does this same thing happen to us with food?

(Context: Twilight has explained to the group that fledglings are regarded as servants to the master and just asked any of them want to do that. This line is Pinkie Pie's answer that yes, she does. The thing with food is that Rainbow Dash, for the moment, cannot taste it. She needs to start eating magic for the taste to come back.)

I have a whole list of memories to be ready with already in my head, like that time we first hung out doing pranks and that time Cheese Sandwich and I gave you the best party ever and that time we went to Griffonstone and we became friends with Gilda again. And Dashie, what memories would you do if it were reversed? I know you told Rarity and Applejack because they told me. Fluttershy wouldn't say, but do you know what she thought of?

(Context: This is Pinkie Pie rambling on the night Rainbow Dash is about to make her the fifth fledgling. For most of Rainbow's friends, she suggested thinking of special memories together to form their mev bond. Pinkie Pie is saying her readiness on that front.)

THAT. WAS. AMAZING!...Is it going to be like that every week? 

(Context: This is right after Pinkie Pie becomes the fifth fledgling. The text for this line in the story is written as "Eventually, Pinkie found her voice. 'THAT. WAS. AMAZING!' she screeched at the top of her lungs, and she bounced off the walls of her room. She eventually stopped, placing her front hooves on Rainbow's chest, desperate to know, 'Is it going to be like that every week?'. Please leave a signicant pause after exclamation and before question with a notable difference in pitch, first is high, second is low.)

Let's do that experiment later. (brief pause) We could ask Starlight. I don't know how she'd feel, but it's worth a shot. She's bound to be back from her breakfast with Trixie by now. I haven't had a chance to tell her the news.

(Context: The experiment in question is letting Rainbow Dash try to eat Twilight's magic since she's an alicorn and might recover faster. It eventually happens in the same chapter (Chapter 3) but after talking to Starlight. The thing they are going to ask Starlight is if she would be a fledgling since master mevs are recommended to have six total.)

Well, to be honest, despite my lack of unicorn magic, I feel in otherwise good shape and all the better if I do recover faster. I am sure I'll be joining you all but as the last in the group. That just feels proper.

(Context: This line is said in Chapter 4 after Rainbow Dash has had Twilight's magic as her first meal. This was done with Twilight's full knowledge and permission. She slept for an hour after the bite. After waking up, Twilight can still fly even though she cannot use her unicorn magic, so Rainbow Dash did not eat *all* of her magic. Twilight is in good condition and, with much of a book about mevs proving true by this point, she is also confident that her magic will return in due time.)

I remembered that this room was where we decided to start keeping a journal with our friends, the time we put into beautifying this castle together, the Power Ponies, and...well, now that you're a mev, the sun and moon have special meaning to you. When I thought of all those things together, it just seemed fitting.

(Context: This is in Chapter 11, the last of this arc and right before when Twilight herself becomes the last fledgling. One of the things Rainbow Dash has told other friends is that good memories help for their transformation. Twilight is explaining her logic to Rainbow Dash in trying to pick a special place to do their first exchange of magic. The exchanges are special magic that feed both mevs).

Oh Rainbow Dash. The others said you became a magic-eating vampire. Is that true?

(Context: Spike is alone in the library when Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, and Starlight Glimmer come to find him for looking up Twilight's schedule. He has at the very least been informed of Rainbow's transformation. He says this line with a casual air of mild curiosity.)

All of you are overthinking this. Go ahead and tell them if they ask. We live in Equestria, in Ponyville near both Canterlot and the Everfree forest at that. Lots of weird, magical things happen around here. It'll just be another part of the background to them. This castle was a big deal when it first grew, but now it's just part of how things are here. Seriously, I know we like to think we're special and important, but your students have lives outside of you. I know, and I won't be in your pack. I'm still here. A lot of the students are now used to having non-ponies as classmates at the school too. Really, it's just another day in Ponyville.

(Context: The group is discussing how much they should tell others, mainly students at the School of Friendship, about Rainbow's transformation into a master mev and the fact that Twilight Sparkle has to be without magic for a few days since she willingly let Rainbow Dash eat it. Spike does not think this is a big deal, and that they are overthinking it. He is confident in these words and speaks with the same matter-of-fact attitude in how he once explained what a Crystalling is in the first episode of Season 6.)

Tonight is another Fledgling Hunt. Rainbow Dash has one hour to capture either Rarity, Pinkie Pie, or Applejack. Unlike our first two-player hunt, magic is banned for this round to even things out for our three competitors and up the challenge for our chaser. 

(Context: With Discord's help, the ponies set up a few games to help decide the order of some of Rainbow's fledglings. Spike uses it as an opportunity to act as commentator. Please state this line with Spike's "commentator" voice like in the episode Fall Weather Friends.)

But enough about me. What's new with the whimsical world of Ponyville? Anything exciting happen in the past week?

(Context: This takes place during one of Discord and Fluttershy's Tuesday tea parties. It is Discord's first line in the story overall. He's taken a moment to stop talking about himself and ask Fluttershy about Ponyville. This is right before Fluttershy asks him if  he has ever heard of mevs and eventually leads into informing him Rainbow Dash turned into a master mev the previous Friday.)

You...I...(shudders)..Please tell me she's eaten. You said Friday...today's Tuesday. Has she eaten?

(Context: Fluttershy has informed Discord Rainbow Dash is now a master mev. They need to eat magic at least once a week or they go berserk. Discord is the only creature in the story who has past experiences with mevs, and they were not good ones. This line is right after Fluttershy reminds him Rainbow Dash is his friend, but he is still coming to terms with the information. He is scared though actors can add a very, very subtle hint of a growl and anger if possible, building that into the last part, "Has she eaten?" would be best.)

(clears throat) Yes, well, Fluttershy said you wanted my help, so here I am. Because of your newfound abilities, I can't make the stage quite as easily as I usually can. We'll have to work around a few things.

(Context: This is said to Rainbow Dash when visiting her at Fluttershy's suggestion. Rainbow Dash has shown Discord her full vampire form, and he has denied being scared of it. She doesn't drive the point, noting she didn't say he was (master mevs can sense fear). This is Discord moving things along back to Fluttershy's request that he make the stage for a fledgling hunt game idea the ponies want to do for Rainbow picking her first fledgling. Fluttershy suggested the stage idea since he makes stages for Ogres and Oubliettes games with Spike and Big Mac. Rainbow is immune to having most magic cast on her after becoming a master mev, which is going to make things challenging for Discord in ways he finds both annoying and interesting.)

Are any of the others acting weird? Professor Rarity used her magic in class without any problems.

(Context: The Student Six are meeting during their lunch break at school. Ocellus has noticed Twilight is not using magic. Smolder remarked that is weird. Gallus is asking the others if any of the teachers are exhibiting that same weirdness.)

I'll ask her. You all come back me up, but I'll do the asking. How's that?

(Context: Gallus is offering to be the one among the group to ask Twilight Sparkle directly about her not using magic since they are concerned something is wrong.)

Master! Call her ‘Master.' Especially if you're scared.

 (Context: Gallus has just helped the group break out of the fear snare by calling Rainbow Dash "Master," but she's still stuck in her own thoughts when Ocellus asks her a question as a scared whisper. Gallus is quietly hissing these words in a whisper towards Ocellus as he senses both that the word, "Master," and fear have an effect on Rainbow Dash.)

Have any of you noticed that Headmare Twilight is not using any magic today?

(Context: Ocellus asks this question to the rest of the Student Six during their lunch break at school. She has noticed Twilight isn't using magic during school on Monday. No one else noticed.)

Professor Dash, what was that?! 

(State this line as a scared whisper.)

(Context: When Rainbow Dash reveals her full vampire form to the Student Six, it goes well beyond her original intention of just making sure they believe her. A red circle forms around her and the entire group. A translucent leviathan rises up (called a "leviathan dread" in the story and eventually named Blitz). The whole process traps them in their own fear. The leviathan telepathically sends the word Master to the group after she harmlessly swishes through them and dismisses herself. Gallus calls out the word as a question, and it releases the group from the trap. Ocellus asks the above in a scared whisper, as a reference to all of the above with the circle and snake. Rainbow will eventually answer her that she guesses it's called a fear snare).

The electric shock is gone, but I still feel...bad…like a knot in my stomach. I can't tell if it's guilt about trying or lament that I can't do it. I've never had something like this happen to me. 

(Context: Master mevs are immune to most magic cast on them. For changelings, that means they can no longer take on Rainbow Dash's form. Ocellus discovers this fact after the events of chapter 5 and that she receives an electric shock if attempting the full vampire form. She admits this discovery to Rainbow Dash in chapter 9. Rainbow asks her if she is alright. The above line is Ocellus' answer.)

Aw, I wouldn't worry about it.

(Context: The Student Six are meeting during their lunch break at school. Ocellus has noticed that Twilight Sparkle is not using magic. Sandbar is not concerned and trying to lessen the concerns of the others.)

Because she isn't, and none of the other teachers are. They know what's up, whatever it is. Weird things happen in Ponyville all the time, and our teachers have been around to handle a lot of them.

(Context: Sandbar is answering Yona's question about why he is not concerned about Twilight not using her magic. So long as she isn't worried, he isn't either.)

But dudes, that is so rude to do to any unicorn and even worse for an alicorn princess.

(Context: In pony culture, it is rude to ask a unicorn about why they are not using their horn. Sandbar points this out and considers it even ruder to ask an alicorn.)

Not until you said it just now.

(Context: The Student Six are meeting at school during their lunch break. This line is Silverstream's response to Ocellus' question if any of them noticed Twilight Sparkle is not using magic.)

We should ask Professor Applejack. She's the Element of Honesty. 

(Context: This is Silverstream's contribution to the group on how they should approach things since a few of them are concerned and want to ask about Twilight not using magic.)

So, it's some kind of secret? We certainly didn't mean to intrude.

(Context: This is in response to Rainbow Dash openly trying to calm herself down after she becomes defensive when the Student Six decide to ask her about Twilight Sparkle not using magic.)

But what if something is seriously wrong?

(Context: The Student Six are meeting during their lunch break at school. Ocellus has noticed Twilight Sparkle is not using magic. Sandbar has pointed out it would be rude to ask, and this line is Smolder echoing an earlier stated concern from Gallus that something might be wrong.)

So, what were you going to do to us? 

(Context: This is after Gallus breaks the group out of the fear snare by saying the word "Master" aloud. Rainbow has explained to them that she cannot eat their magic because they are too young. Smolder asks her the above, and it is described as borderline accusatory and mildly curious in text.)

Anything we can or should do? What about all the other students?

(Context: Smolder is asking this to Rainbow Dash near the end of chapter 5 after Rainbow has explained several things to the group. They are on better terms after she explains how new her transformation is to her and that she didn't even know she could cast a fear snare or feed on fear during the day.)

All our teachers act weird already. 

(Context: The Student Six are having a discussion during their school lunch break. Ocellus has noticed that Twilight Sparkle is not using her magic. Smolder remarked that is weird. Gallus asks if any of the others are acting weird. Yona follows up with this line. It is muttered but soon followed by a friendly smile in text.)

Or we could ask Professor Dash since she right there.

(Context: The Student Six are deciding how best to approach and ask Twilight about her not using her magic. Sandbar points out it is a rude question. Gallus and Smolder still favor asking her since something might be wrong. Gallus decides he'll do the asking, and the others can back him up. Rainbow Dash happens to fly by the group around this time, so Yona offers up the idea of asking her instead.)

Yona not like what you did, Master Dash. 

(Context: This is after Gallus breaks the group out of a fear snare Rainbow Dash cast. Rainbow Dash has confessed to the Student Six that being a master mev is a new thing for her. She sensed their fear, trapped them, and fed on that fear on an instinctual level. Yona freely admits here she did not like Rainbow Dash doing that. This statement is grumbled, but there should be no sarcasm for the "Master" part. The reason she uses the "Master" title is that Gallus used the word to break them out of the snare and told Ocellus to use it, especially if scared.)

Twilight, it is good, though strange, to see you. We did not mean to teleport here. It was as if...

(Context: Rainbow Dash has officially decreed the name of her mev pack to be Team Awesome and smacked her hoof on the table in Twilight's throne room when doing so. This, unintentionally on Rainbow's part, triggers an automatic summon of both Celestia and Luna into the throne room to meet her. The text for this line goes as follows: "Twilight, it is good, though strange, to see you." Celestia lowered her neck to nuzzle with Twilight. "We did not mean to teleport here. It was as if..." Celestia's voice trailed off as her eyes finally saw Rainbow Dash.)

A pleasure to know these things, Master Rainbow Dash.

(Context: Rainbow Dash has gone through the formalities of announcing herself as a master mev with a full pack and introducing the ponies chosen as her fledglings even though Celestia and Luna both know all of them. Celestia is politely replying to Rainbow Dash doing that.)

Perhaps we could assist you with informing Spitfire. 

(Context: Rainbow Dash has decided that she should tell Spitfire about her master mev transformation now that she has a full pack though she wishes to tell Spitfire only about herself instead of including the pack in the confession. Celestia is offering to help her with that. This line is the last piece of dialogue for the entire arc. The text for it goes like this: "'Perhaps we could assist you with informing Spitfire,' Celestia offered." That is the end of chapter 11 and the arc as a whole.)

Most curious. How did this happen?

(Context: Rainbow Dash has officially decreed the name of her mev pack to be Team Awesome and smacked her hoof on the table in Twilight's throne room when doing so. This, unintentionally on Rainbow's part, triggers an automatic summon of both Celestia and Luna into the throne room to meet her. Luna is the first of the two princesses to speak.

The text goes like this:

Suddenly, a flash of light spread through the room from right before the set of doors closest to where Rainbow sat. When it cleared,  Princess Celestia and Princess Luna stood and surveyed their surroundings.

"Most curious," Luna uttered. "How did this happen?") 

Per chance, could you tell us how or why we have been summoned?

(Context: Celestia realizes Rainbow Dash summoned the pair once she sees her in the room. Luna follows Celestia's line of sight and reaches the same realization. They all formally exchange titles and after that, Luna asks this line without knowing Rainbow Dash summoned them unintentionally. There is no accusation in her tone. The question is honest and sincere.)

With six fledglings to feed you most nights, we do not expect that to be a problem.
