Royal Duality

Royal Duality

Project Overview

The Project

Royal Duality is a dark fantasy visual novel game where the player’s choices dramatically impact on the outcome of the tale. It takes place in a mystical realm where a host of magical beings live amongst each other...though not necessarily in harmony. The player will decide the fate of a group of vampires, fairies, werewolves and wizards in this thought provoking story where the line between good and evil is not as clear cut as one would assume. This is the first part of a trilogy of games, so there may be future openings for some of the characters, but this will not be in the immediate future.

This is an indie project which will released and free-to-play game in 2021. The indie team are writing the script, producing the artwork and coding, we’re now looking for a group of voice actors to bring the project to life. We are aiming for UK and European voice actors but will consider voice actors from other countries also, 😊 a strong audition is more important than country of origin

Whilst the game will be long, we are mindful of the fact that we’re looking for people to commit their time with no payment (this is a passion project with no funding attached, we don’t intend to charge for the game). Therefore, we are suggesting a minimal script for each character where we will only voice key sections of the story, we’d also like some character reaction noises too, to fill the gaps where a full VA won’t be completed, we would expect you would need no more than 1-2 hours (per character) to complete all of the dialogue and sound effects we’re looking for.

What will be provided?

We understand that voice acting gigs require a good knowledge of the character being played, we will provide a detailed description of the character, their personality and motivations, we will have high quality images to share of their appearance and a script which will provide you with an understanding of their relationships with other characters within the game.

We will provide voice direction advice within the script so there’s a clear understanding of what we’re looking for. We also respect the views and performances of voice actors, so if there’s any issues and retakes, we’d provide clear feedback, or a safe place to challenge areas where the direction could be improved.

   What are the requirements?

We have a number of characters to cast and we’re looking for UK and European based voice actors to fulfil the roles. We have some specifics around regional dialects thus why we’re looking for voice actors from these regions. Our plan is to complete the scripts fully by the end of 2020, and request recordings for the voice actors at the beginning of 2021. We’d like to have all recording completed by the end of January 2021. We can negotiate this in instances where this is unworkable and discuss separate arrangements where we can. Timeliness is essential, so we would like all actors to commit to delivering on time, but with only an hour of two of dialogue to record within a month, we feel this is realistic and achievable.

We would like the voice actors to have high quality recording equipment and this will be considered as part of any auditions we receive. Finally, whilst the sample dialogue will have the character in their ‘default’ emotional range, the characters have endings that vary from incredible positive and upbeat to incredibly grim and miserable, with some even dying. In respect to this, we’re looking for actors who are comfortable with delivering a wide range of emotions and are able to do so in their recording space comfortably.

We request all auditions are complete by the end of November

Communication and delivery

We would like our voice actors to communicate with us (and if they would like with each other) in a way that works best for them, but we would prefer to use Discord as this is a safe and anonymous way to communicate. If the VAs are willing, we could set up a shared space for you to communicate with each other, but we also respect some may prefer not to be involved in this way, so we’d be happy to discuss this to see what works best for each actor. We would like to receive recordings in a WAV format and MP3, and shared in as high a quality as possible. We will create a shared drive where files can be safely stored, but you may also want to share these with us separately if you’d prefer to.

Credits and Ownership

We will credit all voice actors within the game in the credits section. We are happy for voice actors to use any dialogue they record in their portfolio or demo reels as it is your recording of the character. Whilst you retain rights to using the recordings, we would like to have equal rights to it, so that we’re able to use the recordings in the game, and not have to remove the recordings in the future.

Supportive Fae diplomat/ later Prince

Role assigned to: Entwistle2

Lewis is a well-spoken (Southern English), handsome and well-kept man trying to fit into his role as a diplomat in challenging circumstances. He is only 22 years old and the responsibility of this quest weighs heavy on his shoulders.

Despite his home town being destroyed, he tries incredibly hard to remain upbeat for the sake of the people he cares about. Lewis tries hard to be a supportive friend and leader, but sometimes he does this to the detriment of his own well being and can become emotionally flustered or strained... abhorred by violence, he is more likely to become introverted and melancholy as opposed to violent or angry. He is the ‘Consul’ personality type, he is tries to keep all the things in his life in balance and doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. https://www.16personalities.com/esfj-personality

Lewis is a kind soul by default, a thoughtful speaker, he dislikes putting others down. Despite his intelligence and education (which has been hard earnt), he does not demean others, he has clear annunciation, we're looking for a mid-range voice, who can speak from the heart and be empathic.

Later in the story, he is revealed to be the 'lost Prince' of a neighbouring Fairy realm to Lilly's (the fae princess)...meaning the pair would be married...he finds this difficult to deal with, because he thinks he would not be a good fit for the role.

This story will see Lewis go through a wide variety of emotions there will be revelations around his past and depending on player choices he may become a noble and goodly king or an unhinged tyrant... this could entail some very emotional performances with themes of family death, fires and traumatic memory suppression.

In darker endings, he could be in an abusive relationship (wherein he is abusive to others).

Lewis is good friends with Warren (the werewolf, in fact they grew up together) and Sam (the sprite Knight). He is open minded and likes to give people a chance, despite their background. This means he gets along with Sirius (half human demon) very well.

  • Lewis: No, you’re just tipsy, come on…easy and…phew…there we are…away from the party…and prying eyes. (Lewis has been supporting a close fun-loving friend (Sirius) as he’s quite drunk and unable to walk unsupported, during the 'come on…easy and…phew…there we are’) he is putting Sirius on the grass lawn so he doesn’t have to carry him anymore, he seems relieved of the burden and makes noises of effort)

  • Lewis: Oh, yes of course…it’s just…I don’t know Sirius, this isn’t what I imagined…I thought that after saving Oliver things would improve…that I’d feel more comfortable, prepared for Royal life, but…I’m longing for something else…I wish I knew what… ( Lewis isn’t as happy as he was pretending to be earlier, this is Lewis speaking from the heart, there is a genuine sense of anguish, he can’t articulate his feelings for Sirius, so he is hoping that Sirius will be able to identify what the feelings are).

  • Lewis: Yes, those were the days …but no time for drinking at the local inn anymore…I’m a fully-fledged diplomat now…a respectable adult…and all that nonsense… (Lewis sounds happy and nostalgic when he says ‘those were the days’, but then pensive and troubled for the rest)

We're looking for British performances, but will consider other accents where there is a strong performance.

Sirius is forced to work under a dark manipulative vampiric Cleric. However, eager to be set free, he has made the dangerous decision to help his Master's enemy so he might able to escape his situation and enjoy his life again. He is a 25-year-old good-time trickster incubus (or rather, he dreams of being a socialite) , who is in love with Lewis (listed above as fae diplomat), he would ideally like to have an affair with Lewis in secret as he himself doesn’t like the ideal of commitment...(and does not want to tarnish Lewis' squeaky clean image). Sirius is upbeat and fun-loving, it is very uncommon for him to become deep and serious unless he is with someone he trusts...and he has trust issues. He'd rather be cordial, entertaining and aloof initially, rather than risk exposing weaknesses in his character.

He can be deceptive to those he does not like and deploys cunning to secure the best outcome for himself... He often uses his humour and wit to charm people around to his way of thinking, many consider him a disarming buffoon, but he in fact calculates most of his behaviour in order to get what he wants. Sirius works with both groups in the story and from time to time, and the audience will be uncertain as to whether he is friend or foe. However, after being initially sassy with the Fae group, he begins to genuinely value their friendship and will even work hard to protect them (with a dash of humour and flamboyance). He enjoys pleasure and when drunk becomes a little melodramatic and will speak his mind with hilarious consequences.

Despite the bluster, he is sentimental and a hopeless romantic. He is an adventurer personality type, he will try and push the boundaries and will stop at nothing to save his own skin. https://www.16personalities.com/isfp-personality

This story sees Sirius open up, from being cautious and superficial, only interested in his own survival, to loyal, by making a group of friends who he begins to deeply care about... His master at the beginning of the game makes Sirius think he's no more than a useless 'jester', but the Fae group try to show Sirius he is much more than that and they value him.  In good endings, Sirius will be fully redeemed and be saved from his cruel fate, in others he will willingly surrender his morals and diminish into a stereotypical demon. He will have an emotional journey with highs and lows, a vibrant and emotional performance will be required, whilst the pitch is not particularly important, we are looking for a tenor or baritone performance for this role.

  • Sirius: I’m a wretch Lewis! An absolute wretch! (Sirius is drunk and swallows some vomit down and then seems to recover himself a little, he sounds regretful of his behaviour, but purely because of the nausea not for ruining the Royal Party).

  • Sirius: I was certain I could hold my liquor better than that! I’m out of practice! (Sirius sounds surprised when he says the first sentence, but is sighing as he speaks when he says ‘I’m out of practice’)

  • Sirius: What kind of a question is that?! Of course I am! I’m living in the lap of luxury, full of fine wine and food, I’ve been dancing all night and the headache hasn’t kicked in! (Sirius reels off reasons to be cheerful, Sirius doesn’t seem to understand how to ‘care’ for Lewis’ feelings yet, the attraction is purely physical)

Wise Mysterious Half-Vampire

Role assigned to: Leif Inge Johnsen

Christian is a well-spoken (can be regional, but must be articulate, fluent and clear... ), intelligent, but shy part-vampire who has offered to help the Fae Group, who are looking for a wizard who has been kidnapped by an evil Vampire Viscount.

He has lived in isolation of others for many years, he is 20 years old and the forest the group are travelling through was once his home. He is overly formal when he speaks because he is uncertain of how to handle his encounter with Fae Royals. There is a warmth to him, but it is likely hidden under layers of uncertainty and apprehension of this particular social situation...slightly distant, but the lines are above show him at his most tender, with Princess Lilly (listed above), the character he finds the easiest to talk to.

Christian desires to be 'friends' with the group, however, is wary of what they will think of him when they find out his true position and troubled past with Lewis' (the fae diplomat) home (Christian is part of the reason the forest was destroyed). It is unknown to the player early on in the game, but it is later revealed that he has a powerful position of power within the Underworld and is known as a 'Duke' and advisor to the King of Death...this is secondary to his performance and he actually finds it a little embarrassing, he is level headed and doesn't 'use' this title as it makes him feel awkward.

Christian would not talk with a great deal of volume and his expressions would at times be a little muted. However, when speaking about his own feelings or in situations where the characters are truly upset, he would be able to communicate with warmth...he is very thoughtful and thinks about how his actions would be perceived.

To add context Christian is the ‘Advocate’ personality type, despite his introverted nature, he wants to be a force for good in a world where he is not seen as such, he hopes that aiding the fae will demonstrate that he wants to help and not hinder their quest. https://www.16personalities.com/infj-personality

  • C:…I didn’t realise you were so avid a star gazer Princess Lilly (Christian, does not want to joke with her as she is royalty, but he is slightly amused in his delivery as she speaks with some authority on something she knows little about)

  • C: Sorry?! Why are you sorry? (Christian is genuinely baffled and concerned, she’s been nothing but kind to him, so he doesn’t understand why she is so genuinely upset,)

  • C: Ah, please…don’t let that be a concern …I find it hard to articulate, but I am happy to be amongst people again. Even if it's only for a short spell (Christian is shocked that she is apologising, and wants to allay her fears more than anything, so the first part ‘Ah, please…don’t let that be a concern’, would be a little rushed, as if he is trying to reassure her and not cause her to panic (though it has caused him to panic a little). He, for the first time, admits that he enjoys being with people again…but the inference is that he is talking about her specifically…’Even if it’s only for a short spell’ would be with a smile.)

Role assigned to: Jamie WM Smith VA

We will also consider strong Welsh accents, Irish accents and Yorkshire/Lancashire/ other working class accents for this role. However, in some story outcomes, this accent will be lost...so accentless will also be required.

Warren is a well-meaning, easy to read werewolf who is infamous for being unlucky. He has an intimidating aura and face, but he is in fact a soft-hearted man who is very misunderstood by everyone in his hometown (even the Princess is scared of him), due to a mysterious curse which affects only him (he has a werewolf form that has no 'human consciousness', unlike all other werewolves in-game).

Warren was the first to volunteer to join the party to save Oliver (the wizard) , who has been kidnapped by an evil vampire. He is 23 years old and has no social-standing in his homeland, regarded as a ‘social outcast’, many consider him stupid and adding ‘no value’ to the world. He tries not to let this bother him, but it seems that this has resulted in him wanting to be out of the spotlight and not wanting to have any attention drawn to himself…However, sometimes his expressive nature gets the better of him and he will blurt out what he’s thinking and feeling. He is a 'strong man' archetype and is known for being able to use extraordinary strength as if it's no bother. Warren (despite this), doesn’t actually like violence at all and enjoys being around nature. The mission for him is actually ‘a lot of fun’, he can demonstrate what he’s good at, add value to the team, and work directly with Sam (the sprite Knight).

Warren really does care for Sam, and he is romantically invested in her (but he doesn’t seem to realise that yet). He sees her as his ‘only friend except Oliver and Lewis’, he provides Sam with relief around the burden of losing her home…but sometimes his easy-going attitude actually causes more problems than it cures (Sam will be annoyed when he approaches matters in a relaxed fashion, as she is very disciplined when it comes to work)...he tries to avoid anger so that the 'monster' within him doesn't take a hold.

Warren doesn't have a good understanding of the rules of formal social etiquette, but he isn't rude on purpose, often making social gafts without realising. Warren and Lewis (the Fae diplomat) have grown up together and Warren is very protective of Lew.

A lot of people see Sam and Lewis as ‘boring’, but he doesn’t see this at all, he thinks they are wonderful and hard-working and he immensely admires them…he is hilariously the "odd one out", he has no prospects or a good reputation, yet this doesn't stop Lewis or Sam from spending time with him.

Warren, similar to Sam, is a Defender personality type, but he is nowhere near as assertive as she is and will vary from moments of great bravery, to moments of hilarious embarrassment. He gets very shy when Sam speaks to him affectionately and will do almost anything to excuse himself. He is loyal to everyone in the Royal party and will defend them with his life. https://www.16personalities.com/isfj-personality

Warren however, has a primal-wolf form he cannot control, so there will in instances where he is fighting against the monster inside that he doesn't want to be. In the best outcomes, he and Sam will be in a loving relationship where they are warm and supportive of one another. In the worst outcome, he will also become a vampire, wherein he will lose his regional accent and become fairly well spoken and very OOC.

We are looking for a mid-range tone somewhere within the tenor and bass range.

  • W: Well if it isn't Miss 'Head of the Royal guard', you checking up on your most 'unruly' party member? I promise I've been good, I haven't hit the other boys and girls, and I've kept my hands and feet to myself. (Warren would be smiling as he says this, he is joking around and being light-hearted. The ‘boys and girls’ are all adults, so he is being a little cheeky, hoping it will raise a laugh in her).

  • W:  'Course it would make a difference! I like messing around but- I don't want you to be payin' for it. I'll…  I'll...try harder…so nothing bad happens to you...you've always stuck your neck out for me so...I need to show you how much that means- (Warren cuts in urgently, he has now realised that Sam doesn’t want to directly blame him and she is shielding him from the consequences of his behaviour …he isn’t particularly bright, but his heart is clearly in the right place, he sounds genuine and committed to being better for her sake, there would be a sense of urgency and sincerity).

  • W: Do-don’t read anything into it! I’m not doing it because I’m fond of you…!  It's...it's a wolf thing....yeah... (now extremely embarrassed by the tender moment, Warren tries to dismiss it, but because he is actually very unable to handle a romantic situation, his embarrassment is very obvious, he isn’t putting on a ‘manly’ façade, he is desperately trying to sound ‘not bothered’, but he is obviously very bothered, he would be blushing-’, he’d add the ‘it’s a wolf thing’ to try and reassure her and himself…but he isn’t certain about how effective it’s been, so the ‘yeah’ would be a little weak).

Oliver has become a part-vampire (known as a wraith in-game), he is 22 years old and has no knowledge of who or what he was before (his accent is gone, and his speech is now completely sanitised of an accent). Some of his character traits have remained, others have not. The reborn Oliver is receptive to what he is told to do, and curious to learn more of his situation (he has not been given any details of why and how he has come to be in Helmrick's (the maudlin Count) castle aside from becoming a vampiric cleric), he is still polite and likes social interaction, he does not wish to offend others, but is often absent-minded, he will sometimes seem distant and unfocussed...while in fact he is merely adjusting to his new way of life. Some characters seem to understand this nuance and others do not... his performance will vary due to the 'potions' being used on him to bring him to full Cleric maturity... By Blackheath (the cold vampiric cleric) at times he will be very friendly and react in a compassionate and empathic way, and at others he will be very muted and easily led by others...almost bland and happy to do whatever he's told,...regardless of the moral implications).

Oliver remains the ‘Protagonist’ personality type, he is led to believe that vampire’s are being victimised by the Fae and as he discovers, they are not as evil as he has been led to believe. https://www.16personalities.com/enfj-personality

Oliver was a gentle, mild-mannered wizard who was seemingly ‘kidnapped’ by an evil vampire Count called Helmrick. Oliver is softly spoken (when he is alive and a wizard, we would like a regional accent, perhaps a soft or lilt of a regional lilt, whichever is easiest for the actor) and would never want to cause offence (even to ‘evil vampire Counts’), however he isn’t shy and enjoys talking to people. The very idea of being at the centre of a conflict between Helmrick and the Princess of the Fae Kingdom, would horrify him with him. He is extremely amicable and would never be sharp, rude or sarcastic, only wanting to help resolve a difficult situation and not be the cause of it. We'd like somewhere between an alto/tenor range.

In the story, Oliver will discover parts of his past...but his full memories never return. The dark deity he worships (called Ira), will convince him that the Oliver of the past is gone and he has been 'reborn'...he can either become a terrible villain of the game or a torn hero...who will watch the vampires be destroyed and be left with nothing. In all outcomes Oliver is conflicted, his delivery is polite, but can seem superficial at times...possibly due to his lack of memory...at times he will sound like his old self when he is particularly emotional...but otherwise he will be polite and distant.

Oliver is manipulated by the cold cleric listed (Blackheath), and players will feel emotionally conflicted around his story, so an empathic performance for his "wizard" days would be needed.

Oliver's outcomes are the most varied in the game, his endings range from 'a happily ending with the fae', to a 'terribly ever after' ending with the vampires. He could be extremely cruel, it would be a calm and cold delivery in his more villainous endings, and an uneasy 'diplomatic' tone in the happier ones... He becomes very devoted to the evil Deity Ira and it's heavily implied he has become beguiled by her and is possibly attracted to her.

  • O: I'm sorry, am I interrupting you Count Helmrick? I didn’t think I’d find you here (Oliver has entered into the library and feels as though he has interrupted Helmrick, he sounds apologetic, but not fretful).

  • O:...May I ask what you were reading? (in a bid to show his sincerity and apologetic nature, Oliver asks the question, trying to show an interest in what Helmrick is doing, he sounds uncertain, as if he isn’t sure if this is an appropriate question to ask).

  • O:...Do you share the sentiment? Do you think living creatures are cruel? (Oliver perceives the concern despite Helmrick not showing it, he is good at reading people and wants to be a listening ear for the stifled Count, who has had no one to speak to for years in any kind of sincere way).

Overly cheerful disturbed Servant

Role assigned to: Marceline

We will accept accent soft regional English, Scottish and Welsh auditions for this role

Driscol is a sometimes simpering, sometimes unnervingly cheerful Manservant to the troubled Count Helmrick... his age is not disclosed, but despite his youthful appearance he is well over 200 years old. Driscol has a higher register voice with a soft and expressive tone. He is sometimes skittish with excitement and there's a sense of contained vibrancy, he is excited when he does what he thinks is a good job and this will be enough to make him very content. He is seen as helpful, positive and encouraging on a first glance. Though players who only view him in this regard will be led to multiple deathly encounter with him.

Driscol is not a faithful servant to Helmrick, rather he is obsessed with Helmrick's Father, Angelus, the true Count of all vampires, and has raised Helmrick from childhood, as such, he has made Helmrick into a near physical clone of his father, and has educated him to act and talk like him (though Helmrick is far more sensitive and pensive than his father). Driscol can be inexplicably disturbing in situations where Helmrick's attention is diverted from Driscol himself... if he sees the player as the threat, he will find ways to take them out of the picture and end their run of the game. He is very unstable too, when Helmrick does not do what he says, or lashes out saying he doesn't want to be like his father, Driscol will become easily upset and have incredibly extreme and violent reactions... on one occasion attacking him with scissors and scarring him so he no longer looks like his father...as a 'punishment' for not appreciating him as he should (this trait is only exposed in extreme circumstances however, and in some runs, the player may never discover this).

Therefore, a cheery and pleasant tones is recommended with a sense of 'busybodying' and 'rushing about'. Driscol is quite nervous and anxious towards other characters, particularly Blackheath, who he seems to be scared off, he will stammer and speak nervously around him. Driscol's character, whilst superficially easy to act, could require a huge emotional range, from unhinged and angry to unhinged and obsessed, most of the performance will be calm, but there may be moments of intense emotional outburst).

Drisol is the advocate personality type, he approaches things with deep thoughtfulness and imagination. His inner vision, personal values, and a quiet, principled version of humanism guide him in all things. https://www.16personalities.com/infj-personality

  • Ahhh Good Morning Master Helmrick...ohh, what's the matter? You're looking terribly down today, you should smile a little more! Then you'd look just like your father! (Driscol sounds happy and cheerful, as if serving Helmrick is an honour and delight)

  • Good tidings to you, my name is Driscol, I'm Helmrick's faithful servant. I'm afraid I don't have much time for chatter-good day!  Perhaps drop by for a cup of tea sometime? That would be just grand! (Driscol sounds pleased that he's busy, and is interested in the player not disrupting his servitude of Helmrick)

  • Now...Master Helmrick...don't give me cause to be angry at you...we don't want the day to go sour now do we? I dislike it immensely when we fight... (Whilst trying to sound composed and cheerful, there is a sense of unhinged forced composure...as if he might lose his temper, but is trying hard not to, he may even laugh nervously at the end)

Hopeful Fae Princess

Role assigned to: DeaElizabeth

Lilly is a fairy Princess eager to save her friend Oliver, who has been kidnapped by an evil vampire. She is 21 years old and has no real experience of the outside world, as a Princess, she has always been safe inside the Royal City where she grew up. Her voice would be bright, peppy, well-spoken and full of expression...easily flustered and sometimes her emotions are a little too easy to read. Exceptional pronunciation, RP and somewhat high-register, not squeaky, but certainly soprano in tone.

She finds the whole quest a ‘wonderful adventure’, she has an optimistic but naïve attitude, relying on her Princess training to guide her through social situations (and is unprepared for practical forest dangers), she will always attempt to be diplomatic and kind...though has some prejudice regarding vampires, demons and suspicious characters.  Lilly is determined to connect to people on a personal level to try and understand their situations, and see if she can help.

She is bright and bubbly, but will show her vulnerable side in with people she trusts and show authenticity to others. She also understands he is very insular and would most likely be spooked by any strong romantic or emotional advances (she is betrothed to a rather horrible Prince at home, but values duty over all other things). She is the protagonist personality type, she will stop at nothing to save her friend, but wants to believe there is good in everyone. https://www.16personalities.com/enfj-personality

Lilly is a 'good' person, but strictly abides by the teachings she's had from the 'best Royal Education', in the best endings, she will end up with Lewis (listed above), the true heir to a different fairy Kingdom throne. In the worst endings she will either end up dead, or in a situation where she has to be 'cold' and 'indifferent' for the sake of her friends. She will be emotional, but there will always been a sense of Royalty and dignity in her performance.

  • L: According to my splendidly keen intuition, this is a perfect spot for stargazing. (Lilly speaks as if this knowledge has come from a place of authority, but this is clearly a joke, so her delivery softens as she finishes, there is a sense of wonder in her voice in the second half of the sentence)

  • L: And one must have a good view to see the rarest of constellations (she has a sense of calm in her voice as she prepares herself for a pleasant evening, she would giggle a little at the end)

  • L: Would it trouble you terribly... if I stayed a little longer?  (This is the closest to a flirt she would get, but because she is aware of how sensitive and shy xxx is, she delivers is very softly and gently asks the question as though she merely enjoys his company).

Level headed Sprite Knight

Role assigned to: krypt

Sam is an articulate, but not overly refined Knight of the Royal guard, she is a sprite from a lower class family, but is a respectable hard-worker who is admired by all those who know her. She is on a quest to help the Fae Princess find their mutual friend Oliver, who had been kidnapped by an evil Viscount. She has trained to be a Knight for years and now at 23 years old, is accompanying the Princess on this quest (the Princess has invited herself, but Sam feels that she must look after her). She is dedicated to the task and committed to helping however she can. Lilly is quite naïve, so Sam is the ‘sensible’ straight-talking woman of the company, she is warm, friendly, but realistic and always alert to dangers and risks…she often internalises and plays down her worries for the benefit of others, sometimes people call her ‘too serious’, so she does need to be reminded to lighten up sometimes, Warren (role listed) is very good at doing this.

Sam is very focussed on her friends and role, so she’s finding it hard to express herself to Warren (her love interest), also he is romantically very obtuse and all attempts to even begin the conversation turn into something of a joke. She wants to tell him someday that despite his infuriatingly relaxed attitude and behaviour, she cares about him more than any other friend. (BACKGROUND: Sam has moved to Lilly’s forest after her own was destroyed, so she does carry a sense of level-headedness and ‘keeping herself busy’, so as not to be seen as ‘grieving’ or ‘ineffective’).

To add context, Sam is the ‘Defender’ personality type, as a knight, she is clearly committed to keeping Lilly safe, but this is not just out of duty, she considers the Princess a close friend and wants to support her, this protection stretches to those Lilly cares about (and Warren)… Her loyalty is undoubtable and she wants to be a shoulder to cry on or someone who empowers others to be their best, without being the centre of attention herself. https://www.16personalities.com/isfj-personality

Sam could have a working class voice, but she is intelligent, clearly spoken and confident, easy to understand can be authoritative when she wants to be...warm, friendly and proactive is a good tone for Sam. This would be an energetic performance. In some cases, Sam can meet very pleasant ends (she will be in a relationship with Warren in most outcomes). However, in the worst option, she will be quite cruel and OOC compared to her usual self.

  • S: Warren can't you pretend to be just a little more refined?! We're with Royalty for goodness sake! (Sam is despairing of her friend, this is very typical of his behaviour, so there would be a ‘sigh’ and a slight plea in the initial sentence…she’d then be slightly frustrated with his lax attitude when she mentions they’re with Royalty, her voice would be a little tense here).

  • S: Honestly, you're such a handful! I thought you said you were going to behave! (She still slightly frustrated (a mild irritation not a genuine anger) she seems to be making an excuse when she calls him a ‘handful’, she then asks him, a little accusingly ‘I thought you said you were going to behave’).

  • S: Ugh, you're hopeless, you know that? Don't know why I even bother sometimes! My mum and dad would be devastated if they knew how this was all panning out…- (Sam is shaking her head in mild despair that Warren doesn’t seem to understand the point. She then sounds a little soft and sad when she speaks about her ‘mum and dad’, she is away from home and misses them, and respects them immensely, the idea of disappointing them, disappoints her, she would sound a little vulnerable).

Helmrick has been positioned as the ‘antagonist’ in this story, but it is clear that he is lonely and desperate rather than evil... The vampire has not 'kidnapped' Oliver... rather he turned him into a vampire to save his life after the wizard accidentally died whilst investigating 'Ira', the vampiric deity who has taken refuge in the castle. Despite being the 'lord of the manor', he actually holds no power over the people who reside with him as they all worship the deity Ira...or other parties (to be discussed shortly).

He was once desperate to be a Cleric, but was forbidden from doing so due to his family lineage (his father is the true Vampire Count in a foreign land and he would never approve of his bastard son joining the vampire cleric schools...)...Helmrick is still intensely devout to Ira, even in his ineligibility and does what she says without any verbal questions (though he tortures himself with the implications of her asks, it is implied his faith is a 'crutch' to prove he is a good person).

His only possible 'ally' is a servant called 'Driscol' a man who has raised him from childhood... however, it is clear that Driscol is obsessed with Helmrick's father 'Angelus'... The vampire noble Count from aboard. Despite being a bastard child to Angelus, Driscol has raised Helmrick to be his father's physical clone, his hair, clothes, spoken manner, style and appearance are all exactly the same...making Helmrick feel wretched... he is a poor replacement for his father and unable to be a cleric.

In truth, Helmrick simply wants to have friends and people who will pity him,  he sees the Fae rescue party approaching as a chance to negotiate for his, Oliver and Sirius' freedom (he is very cautious, as he has only ever been treated badly by everyone he knows), as he is cursed to remain in the castle until a member of Fae Royalty sets him free. He is 30 years old, but as a vampire, he is somewhat ageless. He has been trapped for over 20 years, it is understandable therefore, that Helmrick has trust issues. He also has torturously strong ESP, meaning he is able to sense that everyone in the castle dislikes him...he can control others, but will only do it at Ira's request...as he himself, sees friendships and allies who are being controlled mentally as puppets and has no interest in such a friendship.

Helmrick is melancholy, tortured, stiff and pensive...…he is almost hopeless that even if he does have the opportunity to escape...Ira will forbid it...and thus he would have to stay...and even if she did allow him to leave, he may be misunderstood by all living creatures. It is unspoken, but he hopes that he can strike up a friendship with Oliver, and perhaps the wizard can help him adjust to life outside the castle....he has given Oliver a second chance as a vampiric Cleric, but Oliver has become enthralled with Ira...and Helmrick is heart broken...as he is once again alone.

If given the chance to blossom, Helmrick would be the Virtuosos personality type, he wants to learn how to do things for himself, instead of relying on others, but his current situation makes this impossible. Helmrick can be very passionate about things he cares about, but has been stifled by what is ‘appropriate’ for his social class. https://www.16personalities.com/istp-personality

Helmrick would have a well-spoken educated accent (WE WILL CONSIDER EUROPEAN/ENGLISH AND OTHER BRITISH ACCENTS ALSO), he would speak with fluency, his voice is smooth, deep and bassy... it would be alluring and command presence...despite his inner struggle, he will always present himself as a strong and confident person when people 'outside' of the castle inhabitants are around...he is excellent at 'putting on a show', and Ira counts on this. The main conflict of this tale is that Helmrick is not a bad person, yet, he is doomed to die.

Helmrick's outcomes are sadly tragic, he will die in the vast majority of endings, but his limited emotional range will break in certain situations (he will break down into tears and scream with grief in certain scenarios).

  • … What freedom can a creature such as I find in this tragic landscape? Even if I escape this castle, I am doomed to exist amongst living creatures, whose only certainty in life is that they will, one day, die. (Helmrick is alone and reading from a poetry book to himself, he is heartfelt when reading the words, they resonate with him strongly).

  • My experiences have been far from pleasant…I do not consider you cruel. (Helmrick reluctantly opens up but does not provide excessive detail as he feels this wouldn’t be proper. The latter part of the sentence is somewhat more giving than the first, he sounds a little softer and less tense).

  • H: -Of all the creatures I have dealt with, the Fae have always proven themselves… malignant. (Helmrick cuts xxx off immediately, he is very bitter, he does not seem willing to concede on this point, his delivery is slow and deliberate).

Evil Vampiric Seductive Deity

Ira is an ageless vampiric deity. She is the main antagonist of the game and the real reason why Oliver is trapped in the castle. She has a spider form, and is associated with a spider by the vampire masses in-game. She is the highest form of vampiric specimen and expects everyone to worship and adore her without question...those who do not will suffer her wrath.

She is cunning, deceptive and smug. She is able to put people into a thrall wherein they become completely obsessed with her and do her bidding without question...she does this with Oliver, who initally is a kind and gentle-hearted wizard in the game... in some outcomes, he will become completely obsessed with her and utterly committed to doing her bidding. Ira is refined and sophisticated, and she expects the same of her clerics, she dislikes sympathetic and 'sappy' love and affection, she prefers stoic and cool characters...and will mould people into that shape if they do not arrive in such a way to her. She is interested in Oliver because he was once a wizard, meaning his potential as a cleric would be very strong when using magic.

She seems to take each person and treat them according to an internalised system which no one (aside from her) can understand. For instance, her head Cleric Blackheath is one of her favourite people, because she cannot 'mentally' break him, yet he is loyal to her. Yet for the same reason, she strongly dislike's Helmrick, with the addage that he is 'sympathetic and soppy' in his adoration of her. She has no interest in sentimental love, she only cares about hard devotion.

Ira enjoys the prospect of bringing the Fae to their knees, a big reveal in the game is that the majority of vampire clerics were innocent bystanders in a vampire/Fae war which resulted in her clerics being wiped out and destroyed...even though the clerics had separated from the vampire masses and declared themselves as neutral. She is not the only vampire deity...but she is the only one currently known to be alive in the game (there are others, but they aren't mentioned here). She also has a cautious interest in Warren, the cursed werewolf...he too has the necessary circumstances to become a vampire deity of the wolf...but she does not want her position to be compromised, so she wants to meet him, but does not want to commit to turning him into a vampire.

Her voice would be warm and smooth, with depth...some effects may be added to it in certain scenarios (when using magic etc).  She is a Commander. A decisive person who loves momentum and accomplishment. She gathers information to construct her creative visions but rarely hesitate for long before acting on it.

  • A mere human asks for my name? Interesting, you are speaking with Ira, the vampiric deity...come and worship me (a playful and seductive tone)

  • You think you want freedom...but what you really want, is the complete opposite...you want to be in my thrall...and if that is what you wish...come and embrace that desire...and enter into a deeper relationship with me... (Ira often tries to make people think they want things they do not, but she is often beguiling and compelling, her delivery is more tempting than sexual in nature)

  • I dislike this 'hesitance' in your voice, speak with certainty and reassure me of your worth (Ira is mildly irritated by the lack of certainty in the plan that is being carried out on her behalf, her frustration is contained and controlled, but it is obvious)

Blackheath is the high vampiric cleric who leads the worship of the vampiric Deity Ira... this has been his sacred role for many many years...despite his youthful appearance, he is old (at least 100 years old) and speaks with confidence...his voice is not particularly seductive or alluring, but it is cold, calculating and not overly expressive or emotional... even in extreme circumstances, Blackheath will exercise extreme discipline and control over his expression of self.

He is on a mission to make Oliver a cleric who will also adore Ira, purely at her own request at first...but he later becomes interested in the boy as well. Whilst not overly boastful, internally Blackheath sees himself as the most intelligent person in the castle and treats almost everyone (aside from Ira and later Oliver), with distain. He strongly dislikes the Fae and will often say things that are designed to make Oliver dislike them. He is instrumental in the manipulation of Oliver and will skilfully deceive him into hating the living over the course of the game. Despite his interest in Oliver, he holds little 'love' for anyone... he only has devotion to Ira, but even that is not 'love' in the sentimental sense...he is cruel, cold and heartless and has no qualms in killing the living, moulding them and turning them against others... he would see it as a 'puzzle that can be solved'...rather than a project he would obsess over.

His delivery would be cold, calculating and clipped, with good pronunciation. He would speak confidentially but often dismiss the ideas of others and make them feel inferior to him...this is not out of pleasure...it is just his own self-awareness.

Blackheath is an Architect, he is a thoughtful tactician with a love for perfecting the details of life, applying creativity and rationality to everything he does. His inner world is a private and complex one. https://www.16personalities.com/intj-personality

  • Ira is the beloved Deity of this Castle, and it is your privilege to serve her from this moment onwards...and I will train you in this endeavour. (Blackheath speaks with authority and confidence, as if there is no doubt in his mind that you will do as he says.

  • I have little sympathy for the troubles of the living...more often than not, their problems are self-made... (Blackheath speaks with little emotion, but there is a clear sense of dismissal in his voice, as if he disregards the living to the point where he sees them like 'animals' rather than 'people')

  • I don't recall asking for an escort Driscol...stop cowering in the shadows and tell me why you're following me so...intently (Shrewd and wary, Blackheath speaks with suspicion and distain for Driscol, a slight sneer would be present in his tone and he would annunciate the word 'intently' with supressed menace)

We have a very specific style of delivery we're looking for with this character, he is a very similar type of character to the 'Curator' in the Dark Anthology trilogy (for reference, please see this sample of the character). https://youtu.be/mM9t5zyjjxI?t=334

Nol is initially introduced to the player as a 'humble storyteller', who is telling the story 'with the player's help'...it is a story from the world where he lives... He is meant to be seen as kind, helpful and very supportive, reassuring and warm, giving the player no indication that anything is strange or unusual and he is just telling you the story and you alone, will impact on the outcome.

It is later revealed that he is infact the decider of fates in the world and knows all of the stories outcomes...and is also aware of all of the choices that you can and have made in previous runs, he will also be progressively more judgemental of the play style of the player if they continue to make poor choices. He will never be rude, abrupt or dismissive of the decisions...but will most likely have some form of 'opinion on them'. It is never stated 'what species' he is an whether he has any alliance to any of the characters (but he does not, though he seems to prefer outcomes where the Fae come out on top, or the 'true' ending of the game). He sits outside of the world and knows things about the 'world' of the player...which is not the same as the world of the game.

Nol is all-knowing, but not as supportive as you would hope, there is a slightly sense of unease once his true nature is revealed and a definite sense of reluctance in trusting his commentary after a certain point.

Nol could have a well spoken British accent, we're looking for something smooth and easy on the ear...the dissonance of his comfortable and confident delivery against his obviously dubious advice should make the player feel a little uneasy...especially in endings where he is reading about the death of characters as if they are only in a 'story', when it is clear he is in the same world as they are most of the time. Refined and sophisticated is what we're looking for 😊

  • Welcome, my name is Nol, and I am the guardian of stories, it’s my duty to see that all the tales that are told here reach their natural conclusion… whatever that may be. (Superficially very friendly...but final part 'whatever that may be' has a slight sense of discomfort around it).

  • A writer from your world once said that ‘Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery…’, yet Driscol had failed to show his love to Angelus in this way… “Perhaps, it’s time to try something different”, he thought to himself as brandished a pair of scissors menacingly. (Nol speaks directly to the player as if he knows them quite well and he is teaching them some form of cultural lesson...he does not imitate the accent of 'Driscol' in any way, but because Driscol is quite an unhinged character, he would add a slightly different overly cheery expression to his quote' and then revert to his more usual tone of voice).

  • I haven’t been completely transparent with you, and because of this, you feel that you can’t trust anything I tell you from now on...perhaps apply that same level of scepticism to the creatures in this tale (Nol has revealed himself to be a 'smiling knife' at this point, he has lied to you throughout the game, but still maintains a polite facade, as if nothing has changed at all...but the player can sense an arrogance in his words, as if he knows the outcome and the player does not).
