Sonic: Root of Resonance (Character Voices)
Project Overview
What is Sonic: Root of Resonance?
Three weeks after the end of the Dark Gaia Crisis, the restored world reveals new secrets. The mysterious Tree of Resonance is gathering power, and the villainous Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik seeks to capitalize on it. It’s up to Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles “Tails” Prower to kick it into high gear, fight off Eggman’s hordes, encounter new friends and foes, and uncover the ancient secrets held by the looming arbor! And who’s that strange ancient robot…?
Sonic: Root of Resonance is a currently in-development fangame meant to be a technical sequel to the Sonic Rush games and a narrative sequel to Sonic Unleashed. Across nine zones and ten boss battles, Sonic and Tails will collect eighteen Resonance Cores and nine Ancient Tablets as they explore the Tree of Resonance in a multi-layered epic. Considering that its creator (Mechanist Gamma) is exclusively a writer, this means that a team is needed to get the quality aimed for from this project. Which is why this Casting Call exists!
Root of Resonance is meant to be fully voice acted, with a plethora of cutscenes and special in-game voice lines. As such, several characters will need to be voiced. This document will detail who needs to be voiced, show some samples of what the voice should sound like and provide a few sample lines for audition.
Auditions close June 24th! Exactly one month after the start.

As I posted on Twitter earlier today, there was a bit of early casting for Sonic, Tails, Fixit and Silver Sonic II. LandyRS, SkylarToureiVA, Gen Doukeshi and DarkCloudVA have been cast as the respective roles. The rest of the roles are still open, so keep the auditions coming!

Singers added to the Casting Call
Just one day after the recruitment began and we've already got some fairly strong contenders for a few of the roles! After a bit of thinking, I realized it didn't quite make sense to keep the singers out of the Casting Call when this website supports vocalist recruitment as much as it does voice actor recruitment. This should be the final change to the Casting Call itself until the 24th, where I'll be making selections for each character. Everyone so far, thanks for giving this project a chance!
Sonic the Hedgehog is the world-traveling hero of Earth, the eternal enemy of Dr. Eggman and the fastest thing alive. No rest for the weary, as Sonic must make tracks to the mysterious Tree of Resonance not long after his adventure in Camelot. What will the heroic hedgehog find there, and how is this Tree related to Chip's final gift, the Gaia Band?
As this is meant to be a continuation of the Late 2000s era of Sonic, the voice of Sonic should be as similar as possible to Jason Griffith's voice for Sonic. He voiced Sonic in Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic '06, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic and the Black Knight, among others.
(excited) Oho, yeah! Now this is a party! Are those new badniks, Egghead, or the same tried and true units? Either way, smashing 'em's gonna be great!
(worried) Ooookay, that doesn't sound good. Tails, please tell me you can get some info on what's happening?
(action grunts) Hah! Yah! Boost! Aw, yeah!
Miles Prower, the prodigal genius, top-notch mechanic and best buddy of Sonic himself. His friends call him "Tails". He's been traveling around the planet making sure everything is as it should be after the Dark Gaia crisis, but that led him right to the Tree of Resonance and the mysterious energy waves coming from it. Having called Sonic to come help him out, Tails is going to investigate the Tree and get to the bottom of the mystery!
For Tails' voice direction, he should sound like the Kate Higgins portrayal of the character seen in Sonic Colors, Sonic Generations and Sonic Lost World.
(light-hearted) Hey, Sonic! I'm glad you're here. I set up in this clearing to try to see if I could pinpoint the source of those strange energy readings for sure... and like I thought, they're coming right from the Tree!
(shocked) That's Eggman's battleship! He must have detected the same readings I did. Sonic, this is bad!
(combat grunts) Hah! Hyah! Hup! Nice!
Relic the Pika is a lovable adventurer originally created by Ian Flynn for the universe of the Archie comics, reinvented for use in the continuity of the games. A world-traveling student seeking a major discovery to break into the greater archaeological community with, Relic's discovery of a small helper robot on Angel Island leads her to the Tree of Resonance, where she discovers a mysterious hidden world she never could have dreamed of!
As a comics-original character, Relic has no previously set voice. As a result, there's no set voice for Relic at the moment... just an accent! Relic must have a British accent.
(upset) Oh, bollocks! Of course we're too far out for there to be any form of connections, Gods forbid...
(jovial) I'll get this cleaned up in a jiffy, then! Maybe it's got some fun facts hiding from us.
(polite) A pleasure to meet you both. The name is Relic the Pika, archaeologist extraordinaire!
When Angel Island crashed in Station Square almost a year ago, an archaeologist lucked out and managed to find the helper robot Fixit, reactivating the robot. With no memories and no existing protocols, Fixit became her helper. With architecture looking somewhat similar to Fixit's own design discovered at a distant tree, Fixit accompanied Madam Relic on their journey to the Tree of Resonance, hoping to discover his origins.
For a basis on what Fixit's voice should sound like, refer to Skeets from Justice League: Unlimited (Booster Gold's little robot buddy!)
(polite) Madam Relic, it seems we have guests!
(confused) Gi... zoid? What is a Gizoid? I am simply a robot.
(worried) We are in danger! Danger, Madam! Flee, quickly!
The diabolical Dr. Eggman is a world-conquering madman and a genius scientist rolled into one, making him the scourge of the world again and again. After his latest defeat in the Dark Gaia incident, the Doctor schemed up his next plot and was preparing to launch it when he detected a strange energy wave. Not one to shy away from an opportunity for more power, Eggman deployed to the Tree of Resonance, unaware he'd encounter his hated enemies there.
Doctor Eggman's performance here should match the voice the great Mike Pollock has given him for fifteen years now, from Sonic X all the way to Team Sonic Racing.
(bombastic) OOH-HOO-HOO! Confident, eh? Fancy yourself a race to the Tree of Resonance then? Behold, Sonic, for my latest and greatest creation will leave you in the dust - the EGG ROLLER!
(worried) What?! The controls have been damaged! NOO!
(angry) You'll regret this, Sonic. Once I obtain the power of this tree, I will be unstoppable!
Calling Silver Sonic II the "latest" of Eggman's Super Badniks wouldn't be wrong, but since this robot has been in development since the Perfect Chaos incident, it wouldn't be quite right either! Silver Sonic II is deployed to the Tree of Resonance to serve as Doctor Eggman's field agent and insurance in case any heroic trouble shows its face during his exploration and capitalization of the Tree of Resonance, and this robot can't wait to get in a sparring match with Sonic!
As a reference, think a mix between Ryan Drummond's Sonic in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Heroes and Joe Brogie's Sylvain in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
(cocky) Well, well, well! If it isn't the O.G. I've heard so much about you, but how much does it hold up now?
(excited) This speed is exhilarating! Keep up if you can, blue boy!
(shocked) That's not good. ACK!
When Eggman realized his ego was leading to him failing to think his plans through and get in over his head, he constructed Orbot to keep things level and serve as his straight man. The Doctor vastly underestimated how much of a toll Orbot would take on his mental health. When Eggman departs for the Tree of Resonance, Orbot comes along as the coordinator of the Badniks and Eggman's right-hand robot as usual.
Matching Kirk Thornton's portrayal of Orbot from Sonic Colors to Team Sonic Racing would be ideal.
(matter-of-fact) Boss, it seems the Badniks we dropped on the way failed to stop Sonic.
(sarcastic) Why yes, because attempting to capitalize on an unstable, uncontrollable and unknown energy source has NEVER gone wrong for you before.
(exasperated) I always tell him to avoid using the situational mechs, but does he listen?
The mysterious Tree of Resonance stands as a testament to the strength of nature, surviving its bio-mechanical implants millennia ago and still standing strong four thousand years later. For such a location to remain at peace, it must have a guardian. The enigmatic Aztech bears a strange resemblance to the Gizoids of the Nocturnus Clan's creation, but what is the truth behind the connection between her and Emerl? And will she let Sonic remain in her tree?
A robotic filter is obviously needed for Aztech's voice, but she talks fairly organically. In terms of vocal references, Skye Bennett's Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 provides excellent reference for what Aztech is supposed to sound like.
(menacing) You who would disturb the Tree of Resonance... Leave, or be destroyed!
(shy) O-Oh, me? I'm Aztech. Guardian of the Tree of Resonance.
(cocky) C'mon, you bucket of bolts! Show me some more!
The theme of Sonic the Hedgehog all throughout the Adventure era is receiving a remix in Sonic: Root of Resonance, and with it a vocalist is needed to lend their voice to the song. This vocalist may also be called on to aid with the original opening and ending themes of the game.
For reference on how the song should be sung, refer to the Sonic Adventure 2 version by Tony Harnell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZjSrW4p7r8
Well I don't show off I don't criticize
I'm just living by my own feelings,
And i don't give in I won't compromise
Cause I only have a steadfast heart of gold.I don't know why I can't leave though it might be tough
But I ain't out of control just living by my word,
Don't ask me why I don't need a reason
I've got my way my own way.It doesn't matter now what happens
I will never give up the fight,
Long as the voice inside drives me to run and fight
It doesn't matter who is wrong and who is right.
The theme of Miles "Tails" Prower during the Adventure games is the iconic Believe in Myself, which is planned to receive a remix in Sonic: Root of Resonance. As such, a new vocalist is needed for the song. This vocalist may also be called on for the opening and ending themes of Root of Resonance.
For reference on how the song should be sung, see Kaz Silver's version from Sonic Adventure 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfjKXqDDhxs
When all alone in my chair, I just go about wishin'
I wanna be strong, I really wanna be trusted
When all alone in my bed, I just go about yearnin'
I wanna be cool, I also wanna be like himBut that's not somethin' I can do so easily
This is not simply my way, my style
Gotta get a hold of my lifeIf I just follow you, I will never see the light
Now is the time to find my way through this life
Trying so hard to be strongI've gotta keep going
Everything is a brand new challenge for me
And I will believe
Believe in myself
This is the only way for meMany friends help me out, in return I help them
Certain things I can do
And there are things that only I can do
No one's alone
Every great villain has a great theme, and Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is no exception. E.G.G.M.A.N. will be receiving a full remix in Sonic: Root of Resonance to announce his presence. This vocalist may also be called on for the opening or ending themes.
For reference on how the song should be sung, see the version of the song by Paul Shortino in Sonic Adventure 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvERHiTfx9w
I am the Eggman, that's what I am
I am the Eggman, I got the master plan
I am the Eggman, that's what I am
I am the Eggman, with the master planI'm plotting my schemes wherever I go
They're perfect in every way
I'd love to destroy, the blue one you know
He's an obstacle that always gets in my wayI love playing this game by my rules
I will conquer the world with my toolsAll my machines are made for destruction
I will build my empire!
I will succeed and you will see
With my machines, there is no retreat
Every major character gets a vocal theme in the Adventure era, so there's no reason Aztech can't receive an original vocal theme composed for Sonic: Root of Resonance. This vocalist will be called upon to aid with the opening and ending themes of Root of Resonance for sure.
Since Aztech doesn't have an existing theme for us to remix, the song that I personally felt shared the most attributes with how Aztech's Theme will eventually turn out is The Edge of Dawn from Fire Emblem: Three Houses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSXuM2v0YLY
Faint lights pass through colored glass,
In this beloved place
Silver shines, the world dines,
A smile on each faceAs joy surrounds, comfort abounds,
And I can feel I'm breaking free
For just this moment lost in time,
I am finally meAs I live out
Each peaceful day
Deep in my soul
Oh, I know I can't staySo I wish I
Could hide away
Hold tight to what I love
Keep cruel fate at bayReach for my hand,
I'll soar away
Into the dawn,
Oh, I wish I could stayHere in cherished halls,
In peaceful days
I fear the edge of dawn,
Knowing time betrays
