Ep 1 Casting / Welcome to the Brass Eagle (PODCAST)

Ep 1 Casting / Welcome to the Brass Eagle (PODCAST)

Project Overview

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Welcome to the Brass Eagle is an original 10-episode fantasy podcast series based around the Brass Eagle Tavern, an establishment whispered about in myth and legend.  Starring Mike LeBeau, E.R. Hollands, Maddi Albregts, and Connor Bushoven.

Episode 1 will focus on the travels of Amara Silvertongue, an aspiring bard who leaves home and encounters strange rumors about a place known only as the Brass Eagle Tavern.  The story follows her travels as her own life passes her by, and she is eventually set on a collision course with the mysterious inn.

Episode 1 will be used to generate interest and launch a crowdfunding campaign. Once funds are raised, episodes 2-10 and additional content will be produced.

Once completed, episodes will be released bi-weekly for the duration of the show in 2024.  The target audience is for fans of fantasy drama ranging from teens to adults in the 20-30 age range.

Please note that this is a non-union production. This pilot episode is being produced on a set budget, with each actor receiving an agreed-upon rate for their participation. Payment will be via Paypal, delivered upon receipt of final lines.

The long-term goal is to raise enough to pay all voice actors fairly and to produce the entire series at a broadcast-quality level.

If the funding goals aren't reached,  then the pilot will be shopped around to different podcast networks in an effort to secure funding for episodes 2-10.

ABOUT THIS CASTING CALL

This casting call is for the supporting cast for episode 1.

The show is still being written, and is still some time from beginning production.  My goal is to have episode 1 produced by the end of the year, with a target for having all lines recorded by the end of November 2023.  This may change due to actor availability.

----

While this project isn't going to be NSFW, certain episodes deal with elements of personal trauma, abuse, violence, and more.  If you're considering applying, please be aware of this.

Please note that since the project will be produced mainly via collaboration over Discord, you must be 13 or older per Discord's terms of service.

TO AUDITION

  • Please submit each audition as a .mp3 file when possible and include contact information in the audition description.

  • Please title the files as YOURNAME_CHARACTERNAME_AUDITION.mp3

  • Please do up to a maixmum of 3 takes in ABCABC format.  Please slate your audition with your name or username.

  • Audio quality is very important to this production.  High-quality USB/XLR mics are strongly preferred.  Please ensure you're in a noise-free environment.  Minimal cleanup (noise reduction, etc) is acceptable.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

This project is LGBTQ+ friendly and contains characters of many different identities.  Unless otherwise specified, actors of any identity or accent are welcome to apply to any role.

Several of the characters don't have a set gender, so feel free to audition for any you feel may be a good fit.  Some characters may be rewritten to better fit an actor if I feel it's an especially great match. The goal is to find actors that can embody the characters convincingly, with the details following suit!

You are welcome to audition for multiple roles if you feel you could be a good fit.

After the initial round of auditions, a shortlist will be created for each role.  Actors may be contacted individually

Production on the entire series will begin after the results of the Kickstarter are available sometime around February/March 2024.  Production is expected to take anywhere from 6-12 months, so please ensure you can commit to the role if you're auditioning for a character that appears across multiple episodes.

Hello all! Thanks so much for the incredible show of interest! 115+ auditions in under a day is staggering, I'm honored by the talent on display!

I realized I missed a role from the Ep1 script when I posted the initial call, so I have added the role back in. It is for the Hooded Clergy, a religious speaker encountered during a brief scene in a city. The role is open to actors of any identity.

MAJOR ROLE

Lily is Amara's younger sister, whom we meet at a few different ages throughout episode 1. Although she and Amara have their ups and downs, they ultimately love each other.

While initially very upset when Amara leaves to pursue the life of an itinerant musician, her anger eventually cools down and she and her sister resume regular contact.

For line 1, she is around 6-8 years old. She is about 11-13 in line 3. For line 3, she is closer to 14 and should sound a bit less childish and more frail as her sickness becomes more evident.

Lily is open to any actor regardless of identity or background, but an English (British RP) accent is preferred for this role.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each episode will be rehearsed during a live remote table read with the other actors, director, and producer in order to provide notes and feedback.  A secondary recording session will then be scheduled so the actors can interact and record their final takes.  If necessary, pickups will be requested outside of the scheduled calls.

The goal will be to have as many actors as possible present for the reads to make the acting feel natural and believable, but scheduling will be flexible to accommodate each actor's availability.

  • LILY: It’s not fair! You can’t leave! Mom, tell her she can’t leave! // MOM: Lily, I can't do that. We're both happy for you, Amara. // LILY :No! I hate her!

  • (age 11-13) LILY: I'm doing fine, I guess? I’ve got some friends, but it feels like I’m always way behind. // AMARA: (chuckling) I remember when I was there. I do not envy you. // LILY: Yeah. It’s…just a lot, you know? I’m always tired.

  • (age 14; as if reading a letter) Dear Amara - I’m...sick. We don’t know from what. It’s been weeks, now, and it’s not getting better. Mom hasn’t said much about it, but the doctors…I’ve seen it in their eyes. They aren’t optimistic.

The role of Amara's mom is open to any actor regardless of identity or background, but an English (British RP) accent is preferred for this role.

  • (as if reading a letter) P.S. Amara–I want you to know that despite my worries, I’m proud of you. Take care of yourself, my love, and know that your family supports and misses you. –Mom.)

  • AMARA: I miss her so much, Mom. I don’t know if I can keep going. // MOM: I said the same. And here I am. She…would have wanted us to find the light in this darkness. One day at a time. Ok?

  • Oh. Oh, honey, I’m so sorry. We’re not scheduled to head that way for another few months. I’ll…I’ll talk to the band and see what I can do.

  • Honey, we’re here for you. Let us help you, even if it’s just by distracting you. Just for tonight.

They’re both grown now. But I had you going there, didn’t I? Hahaha!

  • DREW: Amara, maybe going out for a little while could help. Just to take your mind off things, even if it’s just for a bit. // AMARA: …Maybe…a distraction would be good. // DREW: That’s the spirit! We’ll take care of you.

  • MOM: Have you seen Amara? Please--I'm looking for her. I'm very worried. // DREW (flabbergasted): …About that…I…I don’t think she’s here anymore.

MINOR ROLE

The Drunk Taverngoer is a person who has a conversation with Amara during her travels across the continent.  In one of the venues she performs at, he/she/they tell her the story of their encounter with a mysterious, teleporting building.

When we meet them, they are a few drinks deep, and are eager to have an interested audience to tell their story to.

This role is open to any actor regardless of identity or background.

  • Alrighty. So. I was walkin’ home the other night. Quiet road, I know the area. Lovely place. And as I’m walkin’, what do I see? I look off to the left and there’s a building where there ain't never been one before.

  • AMARA: Well? Did you go inside? // DRUNK: Like hell I did! I turned around and got out of there as fast as I could. We had a storm that night, some kind of supernatural omen, I tell ya. Back home, as I’m layin’ in bed, I swear, I heard a thunderclap like nothing else, along with some kinda horrible harpy or bird screaming bloody murder. By the time I worked up enough nerve and got back the next morning with some more folks, the field was empty. (they audibly shudder)

  • I ain’t the only one who saw it! Ask anyone who walked the road that night. They’ll tell ya the same. Something strange was goin’ on.

  • So, my cousin—he’s a rancher out in the badlands to the south. Harsh, dry area. Nothing around except the farms. But one night, right around midnight, he swears he hears what he thinks is some kind of bird screeching, and a gong, or thunder, or something. Spooked him and his cattle pretty bad.

  • Yeah. He said he saw some kind of big dark shape on a canyon ledge a few miles away. Thought it might have been some kind of…hut or something. But it was in a place no building could reasonably be–narrow rock shelf, hundreds of feet up a sheer canyon wall.

  • He came back the following night with his horse and his flintlock. Said he got about a mile out from the place, and sure enough it was still there. Suddenly, he hears the same god-awful noise and is nearly thrown off his horse. When he calmed her down, he looked, and…damn thing was gone.
