Persona 4 Abridged (Recasting)

Project Overview

INTRODUCTION

Persona 4 Abridged is a parody series based on Persona 4 The Animation started by myself as part of TheAbridgigationTeam YouTube channel back in the Summer of 2013. It ran for 7 episodes until the Fall of 2015, when due to personal circumstances, the series was placed on indefinite hiatus, and stayed that way until the quarantine of 2020. Now with the drive to move forward, I'm reviving P4A, and bringing back as much of the cast as possible. However, not everyone from the original series is able to return, so the purpose of this Casting Call is to find new VAs to take the mantle on the team.

Please note that this series is being done purely for fun, and that no roles listed will be paid. Also worth noting is that more characters may become available as time goes on. This list will include everyone I know for sure needs casting, but there's others I'm not sure about at the time of making this.

DEADLINES AND WHAT TO EXPECT

The current deadline to audition will be November 1st 2020, however this may be extended if need be. If cast, you will be notified no later than November 4th, though it may be earlier depending on the amount of auditions each role has. Also note that no casting will be done prior to this deadline. Any and all final decisions will be made after November 1st.

The primary method used for contact will be Discord, as this will be utilized for announcements, sending out scripts, and recording sessions. Since this is a hobby project, progress will be made slowly but surely. This may mean there could be a few months between scripts, though I'll try to fill the blanks with smaller skits and mini episodes.

If you'd like an idea of what kind of jokes the series makes, or what the voices in our series sound like, please view the video above. This was the last episode made before the hiatus, and it may give you a better insight to the characters you'll audition for than text will.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Naturally, I want you to have fun with your auditions. A parody is meant to have over the top characters, and if you're not enjoying it, the audience won't either.

  • Please submit clean recordings, and have a microphone at least of Blue Yeti quality, though XLR microphones will be preferred. What this means is that if your recording contains static/peaking, background noise, or anything that detracts from your voice, you will not be considered for the part.

  • Please try to keep each line reading at 3 takes maximum. It's fine to record multiple, but stick to the 3 best takes of each line for your submission.

  • Even though this Casting Call is recasting characters who've had a voice, I'm not necessarily looking for impressions. I'd like to hear your own interpretation of the character, bring your own thing to the table. I want you to sell me that your voice is what this character sounds like now.

  • I highly encourage trying out for more than one role. Our cast isn't small by any means, but having more versatility is never a bad thing. And if you'd be okay with portraying extras from time to time, let me know.

Latest Updates

  • Final Casting

At long last, the casting is finally complete. Thanks to everyone who submitted an audition for this project. We got way more of a response than I thought we would get, and that made the final decisions extremely hard to make. I also apologize about the role of Chie. While I went in with every intention of casting her, about 2 days before the deadline hit her original VA reached back out to me and told me she'd be able to return after all. Once again thanks to everyone who auditioned. And you all have a great one! -JX
  • 2 Weeks Remaining/Feedback Provided

Hello all! Just posting this as a 2 week notice until we reach the deadline. Thanks to everyone so far for submitting your auditions, you're giving me a lot to listen to and it's gonna be tough to make my final decisions. You may also have noticed I've provided feedback on all auditions so far who have asked for it. If you haven't received any and would like to, just leave a comment on your audition asking for it, and I'll be glad to leave some as soon as I'm able. I'm also more than happy to listen to any retakes you'd like to do based on that feedback. That's all for today. Best of luck to everyone!

Chie Satonaka

cast offsite

Chie Satonaka is a 2nd year student at Yasogami High, same as many of the other main characters. Her personality isn't very far removed from her canon personality, in that she enjoys steak and kung-fu movies, though deep down she harbors an intense inferiority complex about her group, as she's not sure what she contributes that someone else can't. The only one she doesn't feel this way about is Yosuke, so she tends to verbally assault him at any opportunity she can in an effort to bring herself up. Upon facing her Shadow, Chie accepted her inferiority complex, and is actively trying to become a better person. Whether that be training with Yu, protecting Yukiko, or making dumb remarks about Yosuke, she'll strive hard to keep that smile on her face.

Her voice should bring a lot of energy to the table. As far as range goes, I'd say we're looking for something in the mid-high level, as long as you can keep a cheerful attitude, but still get a little somber when an emotional scene comes around. Below is an example of what the previous actress did for the role. I'm not looking for a carbon copy, but rather I hope you can take inspiration to use in your own performance.

Example Voice:

  • You're hurting Yosuke!!! ...maybe we are the same person.

  • (Overly nice, like she's obviously hiding something)

Aww, Yosuke, that's so sweet! Getting Teddie ice cream like that? You've really become a loving, caring, friend!

  • (Self-reflecting, somber)

Yeah, I'm not girly like Yukiko, I'm not strong like you...I'm certainly better than Yosuke, but...I need to better myself.

Yukiko Amagi is the heir to the Amagi Inn, and a 2nd year at Yasogami High. Her personality is a bit difficult to describe. She's not exactly an "idiot" persay, but she seems to lack common sense on many basic life categories. However, she's unusually perceptive when it comes to solving the murder mystery plaguing Inaba. For example, at a group discussion she brought up the fact that people are seen on TV before they get kidnapped, though the group didn't believe her at the time. When faced with her Shadow, we learned that Yukiko may have some hatred for her family's Inn, however whether through lack of common sense or astute perception, Yukiko never denied her Shadow, and accepted that everything it said was the truth.

Yukiko's voice should have a somewhat innocent, naïve sound to it. An example would be to bring the energy of a child who keeps asking "why". As far as range goes, it can depend. I'd say anything in the mid-range should do the trick, as thus far Yukiko has had 3 actresses portray her in the series.

Example Voice(s):

  • (In response to the reason it's raining)

Well, why is the sky sad? Did the sun break up with it again?

  • (Excited to get her opinion in on the group discussion)

Ooh! Me next! I think all the victims appear on TV "before" they disappear!

  • (Alone with Yu, Embarassed)

You know...this is my first time being alone with-

Kanji Tatsumi

A favorite both in canon and the abridged series. Kanji is a first year student who has a rough exterior, but on the inside he's a real softie. When the group first met Kanji, he stuck close to them and acted like he belonged in the friend group. They later found out that Kanji is just a lonely kid who imposed himself on to others to try to make friends. He's moved when Yu calls him a "pal", and started referring to him as "Boss" from that point on. Kanji is very protective of his friends, as he doesn't want to lose what he worked so hard to gain, but when they talk casually he appears to still be slightly immature. Kanji's Shadow represented his desire for acceptance, and maybe hinted at the fact that Kanji could be pansexual. This wasn't heavily explored, as at that point Kanji really just wanted true friends, but may come back up somewhere down the line.

Kanji's voice can fluctuate from low range to higher range depending on the situation. If he's trying to be serious or threatening, it'll be lower and more aggressive, but if he's hanging with the gang or making jokes, it'll be a mid-high range with a more innocent tone.

Example Voice:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/11888ibr5oL3_N7yCgzcrX2oP6fL8jNz4/view?usp=sharing

  • (Chie and Yosuke ran away screaming "there's a psycho chasing us", so he's terrified, not realizing they were talking about him)

AHHH! HOLY SHIT GUYS, WAIT FOR MEEEE!

  • (Explaining his reason)

The man was offering free candy. Who am I to say no to that?

  • (Protective/aggresive at first, followed by relief)

Excuse me!? We got a problem here!? HM!? ...phew...that was scary...

Role assigned to: korisuoh

Naoto is a first year high school student who doubles as a detective. Her personality is similar to that of her canon appearance, but exaggerated slightly. She's incredibly perceptive, and as a detective her diction is highly advanced for her age. Naoto has an obsession with solving cases, and is likely to make casual reference to other Murder-Mystery series. We have yet to meet Naoto's Shadow in the series, but when we do, we'll learn that her gender identity isn't as black and white as it seems, and that she is secretly terrified of how other people look at her because of it.

Naoto's voice should have a low-range, androgynous sound. Her speaking tempo will also need to be somewhat quick, as she'll be talking in mini-monologues a lot while deducing the case.

Example Voice:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Ft04LM80ICnmld8s_dADlaBNoqP04gk_/view?usp=sharing

  • I'm Detective Naoto Shirogane. I'm currently working with the Inaba police force to solve this serial murder case.

  • (Deducing)

You're somehow involved in a way unknown to the police. I can't say for sure what that role is, but I don't think any of you are the killer.

  • (Giving up her questioning for now, but still suspect)

I see. It appears I've wasted both our times then. Apologies. I'll bid you adieu.

Nothing much has been done with Nanako in the series to this point. That said, she'll be playing a major part in the next few episodes, as the climax of the series revolves around saving her. Her personality is mostly young and carefree, as she's 6...she doesn't need to have any complications in her life right now, and her voice should reflect this. The influence Yu brought to the Dojima household has started to make her look at life a bit more cynically, but that's about as much as we've seen of her to this point.

Example Voice:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZcZUChIgxCCO4O1ru9w_rtmW2Rv5Rdn4/view?usp=sharing

  • (Concerned)

Uhh, you don't look too good. Are you sick?

  • (Slightly annoyed while having a conversation with Yu)

And "I'm" trying to watch cartoons...

  • (Super excited)

*Gasp* Can we go somewhere!? I wanna have a picnic at Junes!!!

Role assigned to: JakeTheSilent

Much like Nanako, Ryotaro Dojima hasn't played much of a role in the series yet, although the episode where we get his backstory is coming up. To this point, he's attempting to be a good father to Nanako after the passing of her mother, but is also a workaholic, typical of the average Japanese adult. He's the lead detective of the serial murder case in Inaba and is partnered with Adachi. He gets very serious when it comes to work related matters, but has a light-hearted side around Nanako. His voice should aim for a lower-pitch, preferably something with a lot of bass, and a mature sound.

Example Voice:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/11NussWi2-qXh-3OBwNgRdY9w5AqEj2Qq/view?usp=sharing

  • I'm your uncle, Ryotaro Dojima, by the way...and this is Nanako. Say hi to your cousin Nanako.

  • (Tired coming home, but keeping a facade for Nanako, refers to Adachi in this scene)

You always said you wanted a pet dog, so I brought mine back from work.

  • (Confused, but also concerned)

I don't get it Adachi...how is it a couple of High School kids know more than we do...

Aika is an anime original character who hasn't actually shown up in the abridged series yet. That said, she'll be showing up momentarily for a small amount of dialogue. As of right now she's only planned to be in a single episode, but we may use her again. Her personality doesn't really exist, just like the anime...she just works here and speaks somewhat monotone.

  • You guys talking about the Detective Prince?

  • Aika. I work here.
