Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni: English Dub (RECASTING FOR SATOSHI)
Project Overview
Hey there, and welcome to Hinamizawa! A small village with a close knit group of townsfolk! You can see the sights, take part in the cotton drifting festival, or even lend your voice to one of the main villagers here! Be weary of the curse of Oyashiro, however. You can choose to believe or not to believe. Either way, this town is always filled with new mysteries, and the occasional murder... Hehehehe...
This project will be dedicated to adding voices to the famous visual novel, Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, or When They Cry. Voices provided by you! Feel free to audition for any of the characters below! We will be covering the entirety of the first game (up to chapter 8). If this turns out well, we will attempt to cover the after stories as well. When auditioning, please follow the rules and instructions below, as they will help make the process much easier and enjoyable for everyone! I look forward to hearing all of your awesome voices!
Note: As I am an aspiring voice actor as well, one of or two the roles below will be precast. Every other character will be opened to try for, so feel free to try for any of them. I hope you understand and I’m sure we will have a lot of fun together! Good luck to all of you!
I’d prefer you use the original Japanese voices from the game as a reference. There are several let’s plays of the game on youtubeyou can use to listen to the voices. But I do encourage originality as well. So feel free to do what comes natural to you when trying out. I look forward to hearing what you can do!
— RULES TO FOLLOW —
1. I strongly recommend playing the game, or at least watching a let's play for it before coming into this project. If you can’t, the anime is also available to watch, although the game gives more details. This will help you avoid spoilers along the way, whether you are cast in the project or not. I guarantee there will be many spoilers to come, especially if you are cast. It will also help you get closer to the characters, which really helps when you're acting as them. So at the very least please check the game out in some way, and get the experience of the game in its purest form. Trust me, it will be worth it. :)
2. Please make sure your microphone has good sound quality when auditioning. And when recording, please try to eliminate as much background noise as you can. I want to be able to hear all of your wonderful voices clearly when I come and listen to them. A microphone that I recommend for a starter is the Blue Yeti. It's easy to use, and can help you sound great if you work with the noise reduction functions in whatever recording software you use, like Audacity. Other accessories recommended are a pop filter, which lengthens you microphones lifespan, and reduces harshness of P and D sounds, as to not peak the audio. If you can, also look into an arm or stand for your mic, as it improves the sound quality of the audio by reducing vibrations from your desk.
3. Be nice and respectful to everyone auditioning! No mean or negative comments please. However, constructive criticism is always welcome and recommended. Also, feel free to give upvotes on the auditions you like. They won't be used to influence my decision, but it's always nice to show your support for your fellow voice actors.
4. For those of you that are cast, the web site will send you an automated email letting you know that you’ve been chosen. You will have one week to message me confirming your role. Once that step is complete, I will send you a link to the Discord server where most of our communication will take place, and give you further instructions. If for whatever reason you do not confirm with me, I will have to give the role to a runner up, so be sure to get this step done ASAP. My email is listed above. It’s fast and easy.
5. Get as creative as you want! These characters have a very wide range of emotion, so even though there will be some instructions, I still want creativity with the sound, so do what you think works. You're allowed to do as many takes for each line as you like for your audition, so do what you think is best! Also, if it turns out that you want to redo an audition, simply let me know in the comments, and I'll delete your first audition for you so you can try again.
6. Have fun with this! I encourage all of you to give every audition your absolute best shot! Let's make this Undertale fandub awesome!!! :)
P.S. If I think of anything else along the way that needs to be mentioned, I will update this page. So be sure to check in regularly.
— HAVE FUN, AND GOOD LUCK!!! —

Keichi is the protagonist in several story arcs. He serves as the audiences perspective, as a newcomer to Hinamizawa. He is very outgoing, charismatic, and friendly, very popular with the underclassmen who often look up to him. He cares about his friends, and wants to help them in any way he can, even if it means killing someone to ensure their safety, or If the secrets he uncovers lead to some of his friends being the culprait for a crime. He starts off knowing close to nothing about Hinamizawa, or its residents. Over time, he realizes that their ancient legends of Oyashiro could actually be true. This causes him to become easily paranoid about everything and everyone.
Note: This character is in charge of a good chunk of narration throughout the story, so keep that in mind when auditioning.
(Calm, refreshed) My name is Keichi Maebara. It’s been about a month since I moved to Hinamizawa. It’s the first time I found out air can actually smell good!
(Determined) Mion, if you can hear me, fight this demon. This isn’t you. (To the demon) You hear me too? I said give back my best friend! Give back Mion!
(Unstable, afraid) i’ve been thinking it’s strange for a while now… Its been following me this whole time...! I run, and run, and run! But it just sticks to me... like a shadow!

Rena is very kind and caring, and a little over-sensitive sometimes. She lived in Hinamizawa for a short time before moving to the city. A certain incident involving Oyashiro caused her to move back. She does have a few eccentricities here and there, making her a unique addition to Keichi’s friend group. She has a strange fascination for anything she deems as “kyuute”, almost unhealthily so. She enjoys hunting for treasure and playing at the old construction site. She is a strong believer in the curse of Oyashiro, and is easily manipulated by the myth. During several arcs, she pairs with Keichi to try and uncover secrets about the curse, and the real truth behind the murders. While in other arcs, the curse seems to drive her to insanity, hallucinate certain things, as well as completely lose herself to the curse, not believing a word her closest friends tell her.
(Happily, almost overstimulated) Haouuu! So Kyuute! I want to take it home with me!!
(Unstable, quiet) Don’t do it, Rena... Don’t think those thoughts anymore... You’re happy now. You’re definitely happy...
(Unstable, angry) Lies... LIES!! (Short pause, then soft, ominous) Right? We all have secrets, just like how Keichi has secrets. (Short pause, suddenly normal, cheerful) Hehe... Let’s go! It’s getting chilly.

RECOMMENDED YOU ALSO AUDITION FOR SHION
Mion is an upperclassmen at the school, very laid back, and full of enthusiasm for games and club activities. She is the tough one in the group, but she also has a hidden soft side. She is the next heir to the head of the Sonozaki family, putting a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. In some arcs, it is shown that her family decides who is murdered and how, as a means of reviving the myth of Oyashiro, as well as the old cotton drifting customs. She and her twin sister Shion were very close, though Shion was always seen as the lesser of the two, but after a certain incident involving the Hojou family, and Shion’s punishment for said incident, Mion was subject to watching her sister kill her friends one by one in an attempt to get revenge on Mion and her grandmother for what they supposedly did to Satoshi. This causes Mion to become frail and desperate, a state that none of her friends ever thought they’d see.
(Energetic) The first rule of our club! Aim only for first place! Going at it half-assed because “it’s just a game” is not allowed!!!
(Upset, slowly becoming more unstable) That bastard... He leaked it all to Kei-Chan... I should have killed him back then. He forgot the mercy I showed him because he was retiring... (restraining) Damn it... I will... kill you... old man!
(Afraid, desperate) No more... Please...! No more!! I don’t want to see anyone else die!!! If you hate me... then just kill me already!!! I’m the one you hate, right?!
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM -
RECOMMENDED YOU ALSO AUDITION FOR MION
Shion is polite and rather soft spoken compared to Mion. She was always seen as the lesser of the two sisters, as Mion was recognised as the heir to the head of the Sonozaki family. Living most of her life shunned and resented by her superiors, she was eventually sent to a boarding school in another city, so she couldn’t interfere. Upon escaping from the school, she made a plan with Mion, the only one she could confide in, to switch places now and then to keep her presence in Hinamizawa a secret. She eventually meets Satoshi, and quickly falls in love with him. This ultimately serves as her downfall when the rest of the Sonozaki family finds out, and proceeds to torture her. This causes her to become very unstable, and commit numerous murders as a result, in an attempt to avenge Satoshi.
(Soft spoken, polite) Actually, you’re mistaken... I’m actually... Shion Sonozaki. I’m Mion’s younger twin sister.
(Unstable, laughing hysterically) I’ve done it! I’ve done it all! That’s everyone... that I wanted to kill...!! (More hysterical laughter)
(In pain, desperate) Mion... Look, isn’t this enough...? It really hurts, you know that? You see that in my eyes, don’t you? It really... hurts... (weak, but unstable laughter)

Rika, for the most part, remains a mystery, keeping in a lot of secrets. She is the daughter of the shrine priest, and part of the Furude family, one of the three great families in Hinamizawa. She is very friendly, and often considered cute with the boys in her class. She uses this to her advantage to easily win certain games in the club. She cares a great amount for her friends, especially Satoko, as they both lost their parents to Oyashiro’s curse. And Hanyu, whom only she could see for the majority of the story, creating a special bond between the two. As the story progresses, some start to see her as a prophet of sorts, predicting the outcome of certain events in the future. Others believe she can communicate directly with Oyashiro, as she can also remember parallel time loops. One thing remains consistent throughout every timeline. She doesn’t survive. Turns out that she and Hanyu may have some control over the time loops, hoping for a future where no one has to die.
(Child voice, happy) Nipaah!
(Child voice, acting happy, but slightly concerned) I heard on the night of the festival, a kitty snuck into the ritual tool shrine. A kitty. They go “meow meow”, like this.
(Adult voice, Unstable, afraid) I could stay here and let you torture me for days and days on end. Or I could just leave now and be done with everything!
- VOICE RANGE: HIGH -
Satoko is the prankster in the group, always setting traps, mostly for Keichi, during club activities. She’s usually very upbeat and energetic, but can get over emotional at times, crying when things don’t go her way. She hides a past filled with trauma and tragedy. For most of their lives, Satoko and Satoshi lived with an abusive family. Her mother and step father supported the infamous dam project that would have put the town underwater. Her family was thus shunned and called traders by the village. After the cotton drifting festival, three years before Keichi arrived, her parents died while on vacation as a result of the curse. They were then put under the care of their uncle and aunt, where the abuse became worse. Satoko often cried for her brother to save her. This led him to kill their aunt and run away, leaving Satoko behind. These two events became the result of the curse the year before Keichi’s arrival. This caused her to believe that if she took the abuse and didn't cry anymore, Satoshi might come back.
Ooohohohoho! (Trying to sound proper, but with a mocking tone) My my, what do we have here? Keichi, aren’t you a lively one this morning!
(In pain, trying to be brave, determined) If you want to stab me, fine. Go ahead and stab me... But I won’t cry anymore! I’ve learned my lesson now! Ni-ni, look how strong I’ve become…
(Afraid, desperate) Do whatever you want to me! Just don’t go into his room! Please... Dont destroy Ni-ni’s room!!!
- VOICE RANGE: HIGH -
Satoshi is the older brother of Satoko. He is not present through the majority of the story, but is the initiator of many of the events that take place in his absence, namely the serial murders committed in several arcs. Satoshi is a quiet and soft-spoken person who is kind and seemingly calm, although he clearly worries about his younger sister and seems to get frustrated or discouraged rather easily, sometimes having trouble focusing. Their mother and step father died in an accident on the night of the Cotton Drifting festival. As such, Satoshi's aunt and uncle became their foster parents, but both Satoshi and Satoko were abused by them, though Satoshi often took the blows for his little sister. This is only revealed by Shion, as she was always concerned that while Satoshi didn't want to make a fuss, Satoko cried and got attention and sympathy, even though Satoshi was ill as a result of the abuse. He eventually murders his aunt, and runs from town, leaving Satoko and Shion behind.
(Angry, warning) Hey! Stop that! Leave her alone, ok? (Short pause, then friendly) You ok Mion? I think you’re safe now.
(Friendly, a little confused) I thought the conversations Mion and I had in class were a little odd sometimes. Now it makes sense. Nice to meet you, Shion.
(Upset, afraid) What did any of us ever do to you? Why do people always gang up on us? First my parents suffer the village’s wrath, and now that they’re gone it’s our turn? What did we do to deserve this!?
- VOICE RANGE: HIGH -
Hanyu is the true identity of Oyashiro. She is a goddess that appears later on in the story. She has referred to herself as a demon who became a goddess after she was sacrificed at a true Cotton Drifting ceremony centuries past to atone for the sins of others. She is also one of Rika’s distant ancestors. Hanyu is invisible for the majority of the series to most characters, She is the source behind the mysterious footsteps in the story. Rika is the first person to be able to see her even though Hanyu has been in the village for centuries since her death. As such, Hanyu regards Rika as her one and only friend. She eventually takes on a physical form and joins Rika and her friends at the school, keeping the fact that she’s a goddess a secret. Near the end of the story, Keichi and the others find out about her true nature, and call on her to use her power and save them from the impending disaster.
(Slightly flustered, nervous) Auu... My name is... Hanyu... I’m pl... pleased to... Pleased to meet you all!
(Trying to be brave, sadness seeping through) Rika, this world has been a lot of fun. I enjoyed being a member of the club, and spend time with you all, rather than just watch. Thank you...
(Serious, determined) I finally understand. This fate that could not be avoided, no matter how hard we tried, was the power of your unyielding will. But the power of belief will bring upon a miracle that shall cut through your will, and this fate!

Oishi is an old detective who works for the Okinomiya Police Station. For the past five years, he has been trying to prove that the Sonozaki family is behind the strange incidents that occur about the same time as the cotton drifting festival. and has become increasingly persistent as his retirement draws close. He usually appears not long after the first murder occurs in a given arc, where he will ask driving questions to the main character of the arc. The questions and his theories often fuel their building paranoia. He is a rather easygoing man on the surface, though he has an odd roundabout way of asking questions, and skipping introductions. His past isn’t the best either. His involvement in the investigations goes back to the dearth of his father, and his caretaker afterword was involved in the infamous Dam Project.
Are you Keichi Maebara? I’ve got air-conditioning in my car. It’s a bit hot out here, don’t you think? Let’s talk in there instead.
(Serious) Rena had also attacked three classmates that day. Two made it with just bruises, but one ended up losing one of his eyes. Despite this, neither the school nor the kids pressed any charges...
(Nervous, serious) Maebara! Calm down. I know you’re afraid, but you have to do this. You have to turn around and tell me who’s there. Maebara! Can you hear me!?
- VOICE RANGE: LOW -
Mamoru is a young police investigator at the Metropolitan Police Department of Tokyo. He is the husband of Yukie, and the father of Miyuki. His wife stays in the hospital while she is pregnant with their child. He is sent to Hinamizawa to join Oishi’s department, which is investigating the kidnapping of the cabinet minister's grandson. This kidnapping is suspected to have been perpetrated by the anti-dam movement, the "Onigafuchi Defame Alliance”. Upon his arrival in Hinamizawa, he befriends Rika Furude, who speaks to him with her Adult Voice about the future deaths of herself and his wife. In an untold world, he regrets not being able to save his wife and Rika, and learns "Traditional Style Karate" to clear his mind from all the pain and hopes to relive that timeline to save them.
(Friendly) I’m sorry to just show up here like this. I’m sure it must be a busy time for you. I’m here on behalf of the national police agency. I’m Mamoru Akasaka.
(Somewhat disappointed) To be honest, I’m not much of a political activist. I have a hard time getting behind any cause that effects the country’s politics through violence and picket lines...
(Slightly unnerved) I don’t think it’s a coincidence. That little girl predicted all of it. Rika told me exactly who was going to die, and when! As if it had been decided long ago...
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM -
Miyo Takano is a nurse at the local clinic, and a Hinamizawa history enthusiast. She works closely with Dr. Irie, and is in a relationship with Jirou Tomitake. She has a mysterious personality, acting ominous, and almost excited when talking about the mysterious happenings in the village. She is seen by many villagers as a bit of an occult freak. In secret, she conducts research on the town, focusing in biological studies. She investigates a disease spread by the town’s ancestors, now in the form of a perasite lurking in the swamps. She is always adding new info to her scrapbooks, one of which she gives Rena in one of the arcs, when she also takes interest in the disease. In several arcs, she and Tomitake are almost always victims of the curse. Though Keichi claims to have seen her after the time of her death, leading him and others to question exactly what they saw.
(Friendly) How was it, Keichi? Did you enjoy the festival? Perhaps you feel more like a resident of Hinamizawa after taking part in the festival today?
(Somewhat seductive, ominous) Did you know that everyone in the village has demon blood flowing through their veins? It’s said that sometimes this man eating demon blood awakens inside them, and compels them to spirit people away.
(Ominous, almost excited) I wonder who it will be this time. Who will die, and who will be sacrificed?
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM -
Jirou Tomitake i# a photographer from the city. Every now and then, he comes to Hinamizawa to take pictures of the wild birds for his work. He is known around the village, some of the townsfolk having a positive or negative opinion of him. However, Rika suspects this is only a cover, and his true nature is well hidden. He knows a good amount of the history of Hinamizawa, this most likely being due to his affiliation with Mayo Takano, as she has conducted a lot of secret research on the town. It is later revealed that he has military experience, and has been hired through Tokyo to help investigate the mysteries of Hinamizawa and the parasite the town houses. In several arcs throughout the story, he and Takano are the ones to inform Keichi about the town’s dark past. He is almost always one of the victim# of the cotton drifting murders as well.
My bad, I didn’t mean to startle you. Are you from Hinamizawa? I’m Tomitake. Freelance photographer. I come to Himamizawa now and then for work.
(Playfully) All right. Just what I wanted. I’ll take you up on that challenge. Don’t be too rough on me, my mentors.
Well, looks like the jig is up. Yeah, we’re trying to break into the tool shrine, but that’s supposed to be a secret.

Oriyo is the current head of the Sonozaki family, mother of Akane, and grandmother of Mion and Shion. She appears harsh and unforgiving in public and with other family heads, but she does have a kind heart, rarely shown behind the scenes. As she is a family head, according to the tradition her name is chosen so that its part refers to a demon, “ryo”, a kind of monster. She is the true power in Hinaizawa, though for appearances sake the Kimiyoshi family have been the town heads for generations. She also controlled the Onigafuchi Defense Aliiance during the Dam War. She now raises her granddaughter Mion to inherit her position as head after her eventual death. During the Dam War, The Hojou family, who supported the dam, disrespected and showed rude behavior toward her family, which fueled the towns anger toward them. This causes her to become angry with Shion after her involvement with Satoshi, leading Shion to become unstable after her punishment, leading to Oriyo’s death shortly after.
(Slightly ominous) If we all truly believe that this land is our mother, that means the dam construction project is an invasion that threatens our mothers life.
(Serious, trying not to sound softhearted) I’m not oppose to the kidnappinng, but that boy is not directly involved. I don’t want any harm to come to him. Make sure he stays safe.
(Furious) You idiot! I was wondering what disgrace you’d bring with you, but I had no idea it’d be with that trader from the Hojou family! You’ve gone and soiled our family name!
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM T9 LOW -
Kiichirou is the chief of Hinamizawa, and head of the Kimiyoshi House. He is a kindhearted and gentle man, most of the younger villagers referring to him as Grandpa Kimiyoshi. His status as village chief is more like a symbolic title, since the Sonozaki House, lead by Oriyo, are the true power in Hinamizawa. He also seemingly led the anti-dam movement, and the Onigafuchi Defense Alliance during the Hinamizawa Dam Conflict, when Oriyo was actually in control behind the scenes. He is murdered by Shion in two different arcs, and is killed in the Great Hinamizawa Disaster in several other arcs.
(Friendly) Welcome to Hinamizawa! How has it been so far? Have you found it to be a beautiful and tranquil place?
(Shocked, worried) Ms. Oriyo! Terrible news. Seems as though it’s happened a fourth time... I’m sure you understand how troubling this is, but I don’t know what to do!
(Desperate, trying to sound calm) Listen, I really don’t know anything, Shion.. I wish I did, but the truth is I don’t think I have the answers you’re looking for. I’m sorry...
- VOICE RANGE: LOW -
Kasai is a member of the Sonozaki Group, and Shion’s bodyguard, sent to live with and serve her since she was sent to study at the academy. He is usually always around when she needs him to help in difficult situations. If Shion wants to go somewhere, she is usually driven by Kasai. Although they sometimes exceed the distance limit, as the family doesn't want Shion near Hinamizawa. This is why she and Mion swap places to keep her secret. He is always calm and collected, hyper focused on his work. But he does care for Shion, and will do whatever he can for her. But when she confessed to him about entering the Furude Shrine, swamping places with Mion, and her affiliation with Satoshi, he told her that he would do his best, but that he can't protect her from the consequences. He is later captured by the Sonozaki group as blackmail to get Shion to confess her wrongdoings and serve her punishment.
(Serious, warning) If you go back to Okinomiya, you WILL no doubt be recognized. Then, it’s only a matter of time before your family catches wind of it...
(Serious, but more sincere) If there’s anything you need while you’re here, let me know. I’ll make sure to get it for you. I promise.
(Shocked, unsure what to do) You snuck in the shrine with them? Well, believe me that I’m on your side, but there are some rules you simply cannot break. I’m sorry Shion, but you’re on your own this time...
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM T9 LOW -
Dr. Irie is the head doctor at the clinic. In his spare time, he coaches Hinamizawa’s little league team called the "Hinamizawa Fighters". Although he is cheerful on the outside, he has a not-as-delightful past to go along. Due to his part in the baseball team, many of the children just refer to him as manager or coach. He cares deeply for the Hojou siblings, and wishes he could do more for Satoko in her current situation with Teppei. He’s at a loss, as Satoko keeps denying the abuse, despite the fact that he has seen her with cuts and bruises. Given the chance, he would try to adopt her and give her a much better life. Sadly, things have yet to go his way, even with Teppei’s death in several arcs, as it drives Satoko further into a fragile mental state, thinking that Satoshi may never return now. Irie also has ties with the police, though isn’t fond of Oishi, thinking he may be part of the supposed abuse.
My names Irie. I work at the clinic near by, but I also coach little league in my spare time. You can just call me coach, everyone else does.
(Serious, somewhat worried) You see, Satoko thinks that her Uncles abuse is a test that she has to endure. She honestly thinks that once she passes that test, Satoshi will come back to her.
(Confused, shocked, but trying to stay calm) Well, being that I’m a doctor, there’s no way I can condone any act involving taking another’s life. But I will say this. Thank you... For saving Satoko...
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM -
Teppei is Satoko and Satoshi's uncle. He and his wife Tamae were forced to take care of them after the death of their parents, but they abused them, forcing them to do strenuous tasks for him, or enduring near impossible situations as punishment while he lazes around the house drinking, playing games or watching TV. After Satoshi kills Tamae and runs away, he takes his anger out on Satoko, leaving her in a fragile mental state where she hopes that if she endures the abuse, Satoshi might come back. Teppei currently lives in Okinomiya. According to Kasai, he is a procurer and uses his lover Rina to swindle men out of their money. In the third arc, he is killed by Keichi. as an attempt to protect Satoko, and by Rena in another arc when he and Rina try to blackmail her father. Shion also contemplates killing him in a later arc to protect Satoko, but is stopped by Keiichi before she can make the same mistake. However, in a different arc, Keiichi doesn't stop Shion, instead teaming up with her and Rena to kill Teppei.
(Angry, slightly drunk) Hey! Satoko! Do you realize you left the kettle on while you were out!? (Scoffs) Worthless brat...
(Slightly drunk, taunting tone) You’re late on your payments. So what are ya gonna do about it? Huh? Stop wasting my time, and give me the money you owe now!
(Overly romantic, putting on an act) That’s right, if someone disrespects Ritsuko, they’re disrespecting me. The two of us are deeply intertwined like we have a spiritual connection or something.
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM T9 LOW -
Rina, whose real name is Ritsuko, is one of the antagonist of the series, usually towards Rena or Satoko. She appears overly sweet on the surface, but she’s a cold hearted con artist in truth, not afraid to hurt people to get what she wants. She is in a relationship with Teppei, living together in the city, but her death usually causes Teppei to return to Hinamizawa and abuse Satoko. In the arc where she is introduced, it is revealed that she takes on the role of Rina to seduce men, and get them involved in badger games, most of them owing her a large sum of cash at the end, and threatening them if they can’t pay up. She tries this with Rena’s father, getting him to buy a bunch of new things for her. But after overhearing a conversation between Rina and Teppei, and getting more intel from Shion. Rena figures out what she and Teppei have been up to, eventually killing them both.
(Friendly) Oh look, it’s Rena! What a coincidence meeting you here of all places. Would you like me to buy you something from the sweets counter?
(Sassy, taunting) This is only enough to cover for what I lent you. Listen here, boys. My man here gets worked up easily if things don’t go our way. So you’d better find a way to pay this interest, and fast!
(Angry, taunting) Listen here, brat! No one messes with me! In just a little time, a ton of money is gonna roll my way, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it! I’m never gonna find another sucker like your dad.
- VOICE RANGE: MEDIUM -
Chie is the teacher for Keichi and his friends' class, the only one in the entire school. She teaches many different grade levels at once, making things difficult sometimes, often calling on the older students to help each other out while she tends to the younger ones. She is very sweet and cares deeply for her students, trying to help them in anyway she can. In one arc, she tries to contact the police in an attempt to remove Satoko from her Uncle’s custody. But it ended with Satoko denying the abuse. She continues to try her best to keep her students happy, despite the dark events surrounding them in each arc. She continues this until the inevitable Great Hinamizawa Disaster, in which she dies alongside many others in most arcs.
(Cheerful, friendly) Very good! Now, let’s move onto the next one. Can you tell me what this word means in English?
(Serious, scolding) Keichi! Don’t horse around like that with the younger students. Apologize to Satoko, please.
(Cheerful, trying to hide concern) OK then, this time of year, you may see people from out of town doing interviews on the festival for magazines. They may ask you questions, so don’t say anything silly, OK?
