Project Overview
Beyond the Dark is an original audio drama anthology. Each episode is a new world to explore with its own original music score. You might find yourself in the heart of a cyberpunk metropolis, a post-apocalyptic wasteland, or an alien world.
This is a gritty sci-fi series and requires serious, grounded performances. Season 1 can be found here for an idea of the overall tone.
About Episode 9
Synopsis: Aboard a deep space freighter, a crewmember must confront her inner demons while investigating a derelict spacecraft of unknown origins.
Setting: This story takes place in a future where space travel is commonplace and at times even mundane. Humanity has expanded out amongst the stars, creating spaceports and interstellar shipping routes that service colonies in the outer reaches. Crews that pilot these freighters endure long voyages through the emptiness of space that can last weeks on end with little to alleviate the boredom. However, there are also dangers in the void - and this far from home there is no one to help out when things go wrong.

Arayah is the protagonist and narrator of the story. She has made some poor decisions in the past and subsequently lost friends and also respect for herself. She has now taken a job on a deep space freighter, as far away from her old life as she can get. However, despite her flaws, Arayah has a strong sense of right and wrong. There is a part of her that desperately wants to make her life better and dig herself out of this hole she’s found herself in. She just lacks the belief in herself to do it. Even so, the strength is there, even if she doesn’t realise it yet. It’s just waiting for the right moment to come to the surface.
Voice type is medium or low pitch.
(Narrated, pensive, tinged with sorrow as she thinks about the mess she's made of her life) They say there’s no place quite like the void to forget your past. Out here in deep space, the cosmos is laid bare - a billion pinpoints of light suspended in the black, but not much else. Some who come here are running from the law, others just have nothing left to lose. But me? I came to escape all the bad choices and the failures I made back home, hoping they would fall away against the nothingness.
(Somewhat scornful after her crewmate gets trigger happy) “Maybe you should have asked that question before you blew its head off.”
(Perplexed as she encounters something she's never seen before) “No. It looks like it’s been scratched off. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Deezel is self-centred and pessimistic. He cares little for his crewmates, and makes decisions based on greed and his own welfare above all else. He has a poor moral compass and is capable of stooping to some low acts if he believes he can gain some benefit. He whinges and complains often and will try to get out of work wherever he can.
Basically, he's the unlikeable antagonist of this story.
Voice type is low, gravelly.
Pronunciations:
Arayah: er-eye-ah
(whinging about being forced to do something he doesn't like) “I feel like the garbage man around here, always cleaning up the mess.”
(breathless, somewhat horrified at the sight of a strange creature he has just shot and killed) “What is that thing?”
(wistful) “Can you imagine what you could do with just one big payday, Arayah? Retire and buy a suite back at Rigel One. Hell, maybe even a nice place back home.”
Bones is the captain of the space freighter Oslo. He is sensible and pragmatic, and is also reasonable to deal with. However, he also has a low tolerance for foolishness and does not tolerate insubordination from those who work under him.
Voice type is medium pitch. Firm but also reasonable.
(curious, slightly confused) “No reply on comms. Nothing from the transponder either. They’re just bouncing our own ID back at us.”
(firm when challenged by a subordinate who wants someone else to do the work) “They just got off a thirteen hour shift. It’s you two. Gear up and get over there. Find out what the hell is going on.”
(straining, struggling) “Hurry up, Deezel. The gravity field is... I’m not sure I can...”
