Spider-Man: The Audio Drama - Pilot Episode

Project Overview

Greetings, True Believers! (That's a little Stan Lee reference for those of you in the audience with nerd cred!)

Over on Audio Anomaly, a super cool YouTube channel out in the wilds of the interwebs, a bunch of passionate comic book fans have come together to create an interconnected series of audio dramas within our own unique interpretation of the Marvel Universe- affectionately referred to as the MADU (The Marvel Audio Drama Universe.) Most recently, we released Moon Knight: Long Nights-- but also Iron Man: Retribution and The Nightmare of Doctor Strange-- just to name a few of our latest works!

Audio Anomaly is gearing up to introduce the Amazing Spider-Man into our larger universe, with yours truly at the helm-- hey, hi, that's me Joseph Bozlinski, AKA ValiantShadow, creator of the original superhero audio drama Apex Shadow! How's it going?-- but we'll need your help to make it happen!

The plan right now is to produce a pilot for what will hopefully be a long-running fan series. But every journey starts with a single step-- so the pilot's our main priority out of the gate! I'll be writing and directing for this project, as well as overseeing the casting-- and the insanely talented and dedicated Christopher Z, over at Audio Anomaly, will be handling audio production. If this goes well-- who knows how far we can take this? Let's find out together!

Spider-Man: The Audio Drama will be a mature, nuanced reinterpretation of Peter Parker and many of his friends and foes. The first set of stories we have planned will be taking place in high school, so we can firmly establish our versions of these beloved characters. But as the series goes on, it's our hope to push into new eras, showing new chapters of their lives! (You folks who read the comics hate how Spider-Man's status quo gets reset every couple of years? Yeah, man, me too. ;) )

This show is meant to be many things -- a source of hope, a cautionary tale about out of control scientific advancement, a commentary on the evils of capitalism and corporate greed -- and a damn good time, too, if we can help it! But that's why we need you!

Just a couple of things of note!

- 18+ Please!

- This is a mature reinterpretation, with a strong sci-fi horror / tech noir kinda vibe. Think along the lines of Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, if any of you crazy kids remember that wild MTV show from back in the day! Think of it as a hard PG-13. We're not going to be getting into anything explicit or gratuitous, but there will be crazy superhero violence, and we'll be delving into some dark, themes as time goes on. (Plus, these characters as we envision them are not above cursing like sailors!) Please keep all that in mind before auditioning!

- We'd like you to have a decent sounding mic, with a quiet recording space. We're not expecting crisp, studio quality here-- but if it sounds like you're recording in a wind tunnel, please sort that out before you audition!

- Discord is a must! The project lead (Hey, hi, it's me again!) uses Discord as a primary method of communication. So please make sure you have an account before submitting, and include your handle with your audition! Thanks!

- Don't slate your auditions! It will drive me insane, and I'll probably like you less. (Though I'm sure you're lovely! <3)

Thank you all, and good luck!

Latest Updates

  • Casting is Nearly Finished!

Hey, everyone! Thank you all once again, both for your incredible auditions, and for your patience through multiple deadline extensions, as we worked to find the perfect voices for our interpretations of these characters!

Both myself and Christopher have spent the last few days going back and forth, making our final decisions!

We'll be ready to lock everything in tomorrow-- so keep your eyes peeled! Links to Audio Anomaly's Discord will be provided in your CCC DMs upon casting!

Thank you all once again! I look forward to speaking with all of you soon!

  • One more extension!

Hey, everyone! Thank you all once again for your amazing submissions!

This pilot is looking good. I feel confident about many of the roles, but as just a couple are still proving difficult, we've elected to do one more extension. (Truthfully, we already attempted an extension a few weeks ago, but it seems CCC may have bugged out and it didn't take...)

Thank you all for your submissions, and we'll speak to you again soon!

Role assigned to: S.Jacklin

Gwen is in her late teens, one of the smartest kids in her school. Raised by a police captain, she's always been a very "good girl", all about following the rules and towing the line, while internally yearning to break free and do more than just be the perfect child. (Yes, this *is* something of a critique of Gwen's pure white light portrayal from the early comics, how did you know? :p) When Mary Jane comes on the scene, it forces her to confront both her own long-denied feelings for her best friend Peter, as well as the fact that she's been holding herself back for so long. This is a girl who's discovering she's not too happy with the path that has essentially been chosen for her in her life, and figuring out what she wants to do next.

  • [Worried about Peter, trying to get him to open up about his state of mind in the wake of his Uncle Ben's death-- a little frustrated, but still supportive]

Peter, come onnnnn! This is what I mean. English lit is one thing, but I can't remember the last time we were in a chem class where you weren't paying rapt attention.

  • [Having just seen a creep rage out on Harry, needing a moment to collect herself]

That guy creeped me out. You two go ahead. I'll-- I'll catch up with you in a minute. Just going to run to the ladies' room.

  • [Our version of Gwen does *not* like MJ initially, getting all the wrong vibes off of her from the jump. There's a little wariness here, a little contempt-- and a touch of jealousy, seeing Peter *immediately* taken with her. For context, this is right after MJ says "My friends call me MJ". So... the use of her full name here is very catty and deliberate.]

Hi, Mary Jane. Harry hasn't told us a whole lot about you.

Harry Osborn is a kid raised by a monster, swimming in money and privilege, but trying so hard to be his own person. A good person. He hates his father, Norman, with a dark passion-- but at the same time, desperately yearns for his approval. Harry's a doomed soul being pulled in too many different directions, and it's probably only a matter of time before he breaks. Think Lex Luthor as portrayed by Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville, though perhaps a bit more sympathetic.

  • [Showy and melodramatic, teasing his two best friends-- but maybe there's some entitlement in here, too. Like "We're friends, I love you, I'm joking around -- but also, wtf, guys, why on *earth* haven't you RSVP'd?"]

How's it going? That's-- well, Pete, that's a good question, see-- I'm not doing well at all. My two best friends-- nay, my guests of honor-- have yet to RSVP to the grandest of all parties in the tri-state area. My party.

  • [Dropping some of his suave rich kid persona, Harry is imploring Peter and Gwen to come to his upcoming party in the city. This is a moment of genuine emotion and sincerity for him.]

Come to my party, all right? Let me do this for you. For both of you. It's gonna be a truly unforgettable night. If anyone tries to get in the way of that for either one of you... I'll make them regret it.

  • [Confronted by Eddie Brock over a personal matter, and doing like his father taught him-- taking control of a situation by being dismissive and making the other person feel small. Harry probably doesn't even realize that this side of him is coming out in this moment, but it's an aspect of his personality he'll be struggling with going forward.]

You've got your answers, Eddie. My dad makes Genghis Khan look like a kitten, but it's got nothing to do with me. Now please. Either have yourself a drink and settle down, or get outta here.

Eddie's more of a cameo here, but he'll be a big part of the story moving forward. His mother, Jamie, died in a mysterious lab accident at Oscorp, nearly two years ago, and he's been fighting to get the truth ever since. It's important to know that Carl, Eddie's father, has since turned to heavy drinking, and is both neglectful and abusive towards him. Eddie feels untethered and alone, and he's lashing out at a world that left him that way.

  • [Both of these audition lines should be attacked with aggression -- rage bubbling under the surface, waiting to break out and consume the target. Eddie is not a stable individual... In both of these lines, Eddie is confronting Harry, looking for answers about how and why his mother died while working at Oscorp. He's been trying to get closure for over a year. This is everything to him.]

Stop avoidin' me, you fuckin' asshole. You owe me some answers.

  • Oh, I'm goin'. The stench of rich, entitled douchebag is really startin' to get to me. But this isn't over, Osborn. Not by a longshot.

Adrian Toomes, AKA the Vulture. Our version is a tragic figure, pushed to madness by capitalist greed and science gone awry, as well as growing anxieties over his own legacy. This is a man who's throwing all of himself into a mad attempt to not be forgotten.

Update, 12/6:

While Vulture has typically been portrayed as a very old man in the comics, our version is more of a reimagining of the MCU, Michael Keaton interpretation. Not old, more weathered middle-age. Brilliant engineer going to seed. Don't go full geriatric with the character!

Language:
  • english
  • [Toomes is enjoying testing his flight suit, filled with happiness as he takes to the skies, trying to get his assistant to lighten up.]Learn to enjoy what you do, Jenkins! It's what'll keep you young!

  • [Toomes has just been ruthlessly fired by Norman Obsorn, for not meeting his expectations. He's feeling the last thing in his life that gives it any meaning fall away from him.]No. No, no, no. I worked so hard on this! Mister Osborn, please. You can't take these wings away from me. Please...! This-- this project is all I have--!

  • [This is Adrian announcing himself in his new villain persona, somewhat reveling in the new path he's chosen for himself. He's there to kidnap Harry in a misguided way to leverage and hurt Norman.]My name is Adrian Toomes, son. Formerly of Oscorp Aeronautics division. Until your father threw me away like every other damn thing in his stolen kingdom. Now... you can call me the Vulture.

Our version of Aunt May is heavily inspired by the Ultimate universe, if you've ever read any of those comics. (You should!) She's not some frail old woman-- she's middle-aged, she's full of energy and rugged individualism. She's a seasoned metalhead, a diligent crafter, and a woman forever drawn to new humanitarian causes. She's a chain-smoking badass, our Aunt May. She loves Peter more than anything, and if someone were to harm him, she would absolutely run them over with her car.

  • [Concerned, but firm]

Your face, Peter. Where the hell did you get that bruise?

  • [Sad, feeling a bit like a failure. Peter's just offered to sell some of his camera equipment to help make ends meet.]

We were able to give you so little. Your Uncle would break apart if he heard you talk about giving away your prized possessions like that.

  • [Insistent, firm. Unbeknownst to her, she's maybe contradicting the wisdom from Uncle Ben that Peter's built his life around.]

Listen to me, kiddo. Not everything is yours to fix, all right? You have one job. Finish high school, and be a kid.

A robber we meet in the opening sequence, part of a crew using stolen Stark weapons to wreak havoc and make a quick buck. He's more of a cameo here, but the plan is to bring him back in future installments as the Sandman. He's gruff, a little dim, but sort of amusingly sarcastic in a lot of his delivery.

You'd better hope so, because we get caught, we're fucked. A lot of people died on our way outta that bank.

  • [Irate, losing patience.]

Careful, you idiot. We use these up, we're shit outta luck. Mason had a hard enough time getting rid of Stark's tracking measures, I don't wanna pay that kinda money again.

  • [Defeated and exhausted. Ready for this crazy day to be over.]

Just... take me to jail, man. I'm fucking done.

Abner Jenkins is a somewhat lesser known villain in the comics, called the Beetle. We're reimagining him here as Adrian's assistant and protegee. He's got a minor bit here, but we'd love to bring him back in the future as his villainous persona!

Just watch your uptime, all right, boss? You know that control crown is gonna turn your brain to swiss cheese if you push it too hard.

For the tenth time today, yes, I see you, boss.

We're going with a narrator in this production, to help us see into the heads of the characters, and better communicate the high-flyin' web-slingin' action. You could play it straight and serious, you could tap into old school Stan Lee style bombastics-- whatever you feel like. Show us how you'd do it! Go nuts!

Update 12/6: We're hearing a lot of over-the-top narration, and to be blunt, no one's quite hit the mark on it yet! So some more serious, grounded takes would be appreciated! Remember to speak clearly, mind your pacing-- and don't be afraid to show emotion! Narrators are still characters unto themselves! We look forward to hearing you!

  • Peter Parker's parents died in a plane crash, when he was only five years old. Ever since then, he's been afraid of heights.

  • It's a new personal record for Peter. With everyone else looking up at the mounting spectacle in the air, it made for the perfect opportunity for him to jump off the far edge of the roof. He scurried around the back of the penthouse, running along the glass, stripping out of his civilian attire on the go, webbing the clothes to the building, before pulling on his gloves and his mask. Just over half a minute from point a to b. And thankfully-- this vulture seems to be a talker. Probably why he's so caught off guard, when Spider-Man comes hurtling out of left field, tackling his prey right out from under him, and bringing him safely back down to the deck in one fluid motion.

  • She heaves a long, tired sigh. In that moment, in the light of the afternoon, with a cigarette slowly burning between her fingers, she seems far older than her years.

Desiree is a character original to this audio drama. She's Osborn's personal assistant, and someone he seems to enjoy "mentoring" (tormenting?)

Imagine Ashley from The Boys adaptation on Amazon. It's like that. God bless this poor woman. But we'd like to see her grow and evolve as the story continues! So, see what you can do with her.

Language:

  • [A bit timid, interrupting Osborn in a private moment]

Are you... aware of the situation at your East end penthouse, sir?

  • [Struggling to maintain composure, watching Osborn and his men commit a viciously cruel act.]

Sir, do I-- ahem. Do I really need... to be here for this?

  • [Optional - a bit of improv]

Feel free to bring your own vibe to the character. Imagine you're an assistant for one of the most evil and powerful men in New York City. Make some appointments, rebuff some visitors, talk scheduling-- Desiree's a small character now, but in future episodes, that may change! Show us your vision of the character, we'd love to hear it!
