Anamnesis: Ballad of A Memory Thief is a psychological thriller scripted immersive audio drama. Using amazing sound design, movie quality score, original music, and stellar voice acting, it will feel like watching a TV show but without the visuals.

Set within the gritty city of Nox Aeterna, shrouded in an endless night and cut off from the rest of the world, it follows the misadventures and misfortunes of Silver Aravind, a thief who steals memories and then ransoms them back to people in order to survive. Anamnesis is created, written, and directed by Arjin Roe.

This audio drama is a full series planned out in three acts with 6-8 episodes per act. Recording will be done remotely, precedence will be given to auditions with better audio quality. The deadline for round 2 of auditioning is November 5, 2024.

  • NEW LEAD ROLE AVAILABLE!

  • New Series Greenlit, Lead Roles Up For Grabs Soon, New Roles Incoming

Hey CCC'rs! It has been a while, but I've got some exciting news to share with you all!

While we are still a few months away from crowdfunding, the team has been hard at work developing the series as a whole and fleshing out some new characters. In the next few months, we'll be opening up casting calls once again for new roles, both major and minor! This includes the as of yet uncasted third lead character of the series, Sheriff Katori Wilden, as well as the recasting of Silver Aravind, another lead character of the series. I currently play Silver but for a variety of reasons feel like someone else would be better suited. The call for these two characters will be going up within the next month or two, so keep your eyes peeled!

Finally, we've greenlit a spinoff series of Anamnesis: Ballad of a Memory Thief called Anamnesis: Golden Nights. This prequel to Anamnesis: Ballad Of A Memory Thief focuses on the adventures of Silver, Ilya, and Jaka years before the events of that series. The trio make up the legendary memory heisting trio, Vox Memorius. While episodes are much shorter than the mainline series at around five minutes each, but as a result we can make a lot more of them and release them far quicker for much less money. The series will be an action packed, fun, lighthearted romp through the city of Nox Aeterna, but there will be tender moments too, directly connecting to the mainline series. We’re aiming to launch the first batch of episodes this December ideally. The series is now in active development, so we'll be casting soon for this as well.

That's all for now, thanks for tuning in and may your memories remain yours tonight.

SILVER

Yeah

WINTER

Want to talk about it?

SILVER

I’m fine Wynn. I’m honestly surprised you’re taking this as well as you are.

WINTER

I guess she just never cared for me that much before...what happened.

SILVER

She was your mother Wynn! I know she wasn’t always there for you, but she tried damnit!

WINTER

I suppose.

WINTER (CONT’D)

I wanted to talk to you. It’s been three weeks Dad,

isn’t it about time you start heisting again.

Aren’t you worried about money? Perhaps I can help...

SILVER

No. I’m never stealing a memory again. And I don’t want you to either.

WINTER

But why? We have these powers, shouldn’t we use them?

SILVER

These powers are a curse, Wynn!

SILVER sighs.

SILVER

They are the reason your mother is gone.

I just don’t want anything to happen to you.

You’re all I have left. Promise me.

Promise me you won’t use them. Please...

--------------------------

LINE 2: Here Silver is wrestling with an old ghost, his dead wife. Show Silver's anguish and torment here.

SILVER starts to let his emotions out. He is hurting, and is nearly at the end of his rope.

SILVER
You did this. Not me. I was this close. It was you, you ruined it! You killed him.

ILYA scoffs.

ILYA (MEMORY)

Finding someone to blame as always. Seems you really haven’t changed much, Silver.

SILVER (in anguish)

Don’t talk to me like you know me. You’re not her. Ilya’s dead. She’s gone. You’re just...a memory. You’re not real.

...

...

ILYA (MEMORY) (CONT’D)

It’s time to give in Silver. Let it out. Let it all out. Free your mind and shatter your soul. LOSE...YOUR...SELF!

SILVER

Get away...don’t come near me...it  wasn’t my fault...it wasn’t my fault...I’m not a murderer...

SILVER breaks down, his sorrow and pain turning to anger.

SILVER (CONT’D)

YOU DID THIS TO ME!

--------------------------

LINE 3: This is Silver's memory thief alter ego, Ghostweaver. Show his arrogance here as well as him feeling like he has all the power.

GHOSTWEAVER

You can call me Ghostweaver.

ALWYN

I...don’t understand.

GHOSTWEAVER

None of this is real. We are in your mind playing by my rules. And this, all this, is just a memory. One of many such memories you have experienced in your life.

ALWYN

What do you want from me? Gold? Jewels? What can I give you to make you go away?

GHOSTWEAVER

Oh I’m not here for those...useless things. I’m here to steal something far more precious.

GHOSTWEAVER (CONT’D)

You see, Mr. Alwyn, every man has a weakness, a memory that they can’t bear to live without. That is the only thing I desire from you: your most precious memory. And you’re gonna point me right to it.

ALWYN I’m not telling you anything.

GHOSTWEAVER chuckles.

GHOSTWEAVER

You don’t have a choice. You’ll be compelled to answer the questions I ask. If you lie, your memories will betray you. But enough. Time may have no meaning here, but I think it’s time we get on with it. So, let us begin.

INFO:

THIS IS ONE OF THREE LEAD ROLES!

Please read through everything before submitting!

BIO:

CHARACTER SUMMARY: Born and raised in Nox Aeterna, her life was forever changed when newly arrived Serin Evengard asked for her help on an investigation. Her ability to chase down every lead and work tirelessly for justice impressed the freshly minted Sheriff of Nox, and he made her one of his deputies (alongside Ryla Rivens). Used to be a good friend to Silver, but they fell out a few nights before Ilya’s death. Was elevated to the position of Sheriff after Serin mysteriously died, and there are rumors swirling that she was the one who killed him. Though she now has the title of Sheriff, she is little more than a puppet for Luminary. She struggles with living up to the legacy of her mentor.

AGE: 36

ALIGNMENT: Lawful Good

ACCENT: American accent.

LINES:

LINE 1 Context: Kat is put in her place by a mob boss who wants her to drop a case.

KAT

You feared Serin.

IRIK

Hm, perhaps. But then again, he had conviction, and that conviction made him dangerous. You though, are little more than a puppet, whose strings are pulled by the people he once fought against.

KAT

Listen to me you…

IRIK

No, you listen to me. You don’t understand how the world works. Here’s the truth: Real power is not one that is just given or gifted. It is one that is earned. And you have done nothing to earn that place in this world. You have done nothing to prove your strength. All you have are empty words, words that do nothing, wounding only egos. But I am stronger than that.

KAT

How dare you! I earned everything I have here. I am this city’s protector, the people believe in me, trust in me.

IRIK

Is that really what you think? This whole city sees right through you, Ms. Wilden. They don’t see you as any kind of Sheriff of Nox, no no. You are viewed as paper thin, a woman of big words but no actions. No resolve. A sheriff of nothing!

KAT

Oh go to fucking hell!

Kat readies her gun and aims it at Irik.

IRIK

I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Trust me Sheriff. Whatever Mrs. Shadowcross is capable of is nothing compared to what I could do to you, or the ones you love. This city is mine. I have eyes and ears all over Nox in every street corner, every bar, watching. Waiting for my orders. Now, drop the gun.

Kat shakes but drops it on the floor.

IRIK

Good, good. I underestimated you. You do have some resolve, a small spark. Not enough to do anything, but better than nothing.

Kat flops into her chair.

KAT

You don’t understand. I can’t go back to her empty handed. Lunis needs its pound of flesh. Look just…give me a name…give me someone…anyone and I promise I’ll make it go away.

LINE 2 Context: Kat, not in the best mental state, sometimes talks to her old mentor Serin Evengard, who is dead.

KAT talks with a voice in her head while investigating something. She’s getting frustrated.

KAT

Uggh, I feel like I’m this close to the answer, to the culprit, but something is just not adding up. These connections don’t make any damn sense. Why can’t…

SERIN

Kat, take a deep breath. Oftentimes the answer is clearer when we are calm, serene, still.

KAT takes a deep breath

SERIN

Good. Now let’s think about this. Who is the one who connects all of these people together? Who was present at each and every one of these incidents?

KAT (delusional)

Hmm…of course! It had to be Sarkin, he was involved in some way in each of these circumstances. Oh Serin, you brilliant man, you always know what to say!

LINE 3 Context: By this point Silver and Kat have reconciled and are close again, and then Silver sacrifices himself.

KAT

Let me in. Come on please. I…goddamnit! Damn you Silver. Damn it all!

Winter Aravind/The Rectifier  - Ideally looking for an actress of South Asian descent. This character will sing in future episodes, and therefore preference is given to VA’s who can act and sing, though this is not strictly necessary (we could find someone else to do the singing parts).

Silver’s rebellious 17 year old daughter who has inherited her memory thieving powers from her father. Though she promises Silver in the first episode that she won’t steal a memory, future episodes reveal that she breaks that promise almost immediately. This character does not have a huge role in episode 1, but is another main character and will have a massive role in the rest of the series. In future episodes, she becomes The Rectifier - a gritty vigilante who steals people’s traumatic memories to free them from their pain, and then bears those memories (burdens) as her own. This leads to her losing herself. Please do a line reading of both parts. Episode 2 will be from her point of view (from a narration and musical standpoint). 12 lines in episode 1.

Episode 1 Line Read: Winter is naive and young here, and I want the child that she is to shine through in the performance.

SILVER

Hey Wynn, I’m home.

SFX: WYNN RUNNING DOWN THE STAIRS

SILVER (V.O.)

My daughter bounded down the stairs. I envied her energy.

SILVER

Whoa there! Be careful!

WINTER laughs.

WINTER

You’re old! You’re the one who needs to worry about that.

SILVER lets out a mock gasp.

SILVER

I’m not that old!

SILVER (V.O.)

I embraced her tightly. She was all I had left.

WINTER

Were you visiting Mom again?

SILVER sighs deeply.

SILVER

Yeah.

WINTER

I suppose.

The Rectifier Line ReadIn this line reading which is from a much later episode in the series, Winter has completely lost herself and the persona of The Rectifier has taken over completely. Keep that in mind, and try to give her a darker, grittier, creepy persona mixed with elements of that childlike whimsy. Think of Jinx from Arcane.

VICTIM: Don’t come any closer!

THE RECTIFIER: Do not be afraid, I am only here to help.

VICTIM: I’ve heard about you. I’ve heard what you do. You break minds.

THE RECTIFIER: I free minds. I free them of their pain, their sorrow, their trauma. Anything that holds them back.

VICTIM: But I’m perfectly fine. Never felt better.

THE RECTIFIER: You can’t hide from me. I see it in your eyes. You’re a broken soul just like the rest of them.

VICTIM: No I’m not.

THE RECTIFIER: I can fix you. Put those pieces back where they belong. You can be whole again.

VICTIM: I am fine as I am. I don’t want this.

THE RECTIFIER: hums a twisted little tune. She starts walking towards him.

VICTIM: No. don’t come near me. Go away. Please. I’ll give you anything. Wait. Stop. I’m not ready. No. What are you doing. No! I can’t…

THE RECTIFIER touches his temples and the man lets out an ear piercing shriek. As she finishes, the man’s body falls to the floor, still alive, but just barely.

THE RECTIFIER: There there. It’s all over now. You’re free.

THE RECTIFIER walks away

Ilya Aravind - Silver’s late wife who he lost two years prior to suicide. Shows up in this episode in the first scene and as a memory that taunts Silver. Also was a memory thief. Will show up again in other episodes of the show. 17 lines.

SILVER ARAVIND pleads with his wife ILYA who is standing on a ledge about to jump into the ocean below. The moon is out, and SILVER is despondent, while Ilya is more at peace.

ILYA

You have to let me go.

SILVER

No! I can still save you. I can still return you to your mind. We can still touch the sun together, like you always wanted. Just let me help you.

ILYA

My mind is burning, Silver. The only way to stop it is this. And I’d rather go out on my own terms than drag you down with me. So please, tell our daughter I love her. And just…let me go...

Oscar Alwyn - The target of Silver’s memory heist in this episode. A self made oil baron from the rich neighborhood of Lunis. Cruel, cold, and heartless. Does not show up again in later episodes (killed off in this one). 40 lines.

ALWYN

I don’t what you’re talking about, bartender. We already got our drinks. Leave us.

SILVER (AS BARTENDER)

I’m afraid that I can’t do that.

ALWYN

Do you know who you’re talking to, old man? I guess you don’t. Otherwise you would not be speaking so flippantly.

SILVER (AS BARTENDER)

(calmly)

Your name is Oscar Johnik Alwyn. You’re an oil baron who was built himself into the tycoon you are today. Some call you “kingmaker” because you make or break careers. I know exactly who you are. And these shadowy friends of yours are part of the Dogs of Maura. Not really friends, believe me, they plan to betray you.

SILVER (V.O.)

The lead goon, quite a nasty looking fellow, turned to me.

IRIK

You’re quite wrong, old man. We have been allies with Mr. Alwyn here for almost 15 years now. Enough of this. Oscar, I think we should teach this old man a lesson, one he won’t forget so easily.

ALWYN

By all means, Irik.

SILVER (V.O.)

Alwyn struggled to get up, and I could feel his mind beginning to fade away. What had I done!

ALWYN coughs and chuckles.

ALWYN

You were right, memory thief. We all have a weakness. Even you. And now I know what it is. That woman, you can’t let her go, can you. You tried, but it’s impossible. I tried too. I tried to move on and be a good man, or whatever that meant. I tried not to let him get to me, but the dead refuse to stay buried in your mind. So I would still hear his voice whispering in my ear. Telling me I would never be anything better, that I was destined to play this role he had assigned to me. And inevitably, I would always find myself where I belonged. Holding a gun to the back of a so-called friend. It’s just easier that way. I wonder how long before you give in like that.

SILVER

I never meant…I’m not…I-I’m not like you…

ALWYN spits blood.

ALWYN

Take responsibility. Look at yourself in a mirror. Look at the man you have become. You did this. You have…blood on your hands now…just like me...

Hiro Ataka - Preference given to an older VA or an older sounding VA.

An older ex-mobster who has retired. Most believe he’s dead. The only one in Nox to have ever left the city and returned to tell the tale, but keeps it a secret until he tells Silver. Can sometimes be cold but also has softened up in his old age. Major recurring character who is central to the plot. 27 lines.

Footsteps CRUNCH in the dirt, and a MYSTERIOUS FIGURE approaches SILVER to stand beside him.

HIRO ATAKA

The first night is always the hardest, isn’t it

SILVER

What do you mean?

HIRO ATAKA

When you lose someone you’ve loved most, as sudden as this, you fall apart. Even though you blame yourself, the truth is that there was nothing to be done here, nothing you could do. Yet it still persists, this heartbreak. Like an emptiness that refuses to be filled. I was the same way, I’ve stood where you stand now, though it was many years ago. It will get better, just give it time.

SILVER

Look stranger, if it’s all the same to you, I’d prefer to be left alone right now. And you’re wrong. I’m moving on, I’ve let her go.

HIRO ATAKA

I tried that too, you know. After this loss, the world will feel colder somehow, and you’ll tell yourself, if you just put one foot in front of the other, and move on with your life, you’ll feel like yourself again. So then, you’ll deceive your heart with your heartbreak, and push it away, far away, where it can’t hurt you. A month after her death, you’ll begin to convince yourself that you’re fine. But are you really? Can you truly leave behind your old ghosts?

SILVER

(angrily)

I think that’s enough old man! You don’t know me, you don’t know what I’ve lost, what I have done! Please, let me grieve in solitude.

HIRO ATAKA

(calm)

If that’s what you desire. But, you and I are more alike than you might think, memory thief.

Jaka Wren - Silver’s best friend who used to be his and Ilya’s partner in crime back in Silver’s memory thieving heyday. Does not steal memories himself but is really good at finding good targets for heists. Currently works as an assassin for higher. A sleazy and cunning character who Silver trusts with his life but probably shouldn’t. Recurring character who shows up in a few other episodes. 23 lines.

JAKA

Ok. Here’s what we’re going to do. I know it’s been a while since you’ve...you know...used your powers, but I have a target for you. He’s...

SILVER

Nope...not interested.

JAKA

Wait, I didn’t even tell you who it is!

SILVER

Jaka, I don’t do that anymore. I told you I moved on, and I did so in more ways than one. There must be something else I can do.

JAKA

It’s easy money Silver.

SILVER

I know but...

JAKA

And what else were you gonna do? How else were you gonna get that money, huh? You don’t have the heart of a killer. You can’t do what I do.

SILVER

No. What I do...what I did was worse.

JAKA

Look man, think of your daughter. How’re ya gonna provide for her? Think about it!

SILVER sighs.

SILVER

I’m probably gonna regret this, but...tell me the target.

JAKA

(half to himself)

Ah finally.

JAKA

(quietly)

His name is Oscar Alwyn. He’s an oil baron, new money and all that. Those folks are always loaded. That means you payout should be quite high, perhaps even enough to make up for the money you have just lost.

SILVER

Where does he live.

JAKA

Usually up in Lunis. But he has quite a lot of business down here in Nox. Shady business, if ya know what I mean.

You’re worse than useless. How long have we been practicing this. Yet you can’t even hit a damn stationary object. Go on. Pick up the gun. Fire at that target. You’re not goin’ anywhere until you hit it.

SFX: WHOOSH

The next memory is a few years later.

UNCLE

I think you’re ready for your very first mission. I have an old “friend” that is not quite useful to me anymore. I want you to take him out. Don’t disappoint me.

SFX: WHOOSH

The next memory happens after ALWYN fails the mission.

SFX: FACE BEING SLAPPED

A younger ALWYN’S face is slapped.

UNCLE (PAST)

I give you one simple task, and you don’t even have the will to do it. What a waste of my fucking time. As always.

SFX: WHOOSH

The final memory happens a year later when ALWYN has reached his breaking point with his abusive uncle.

UNCLE

And just what do you think you’re doing now?

We hear the CLICK of a GUN being armed.

SFX: GUN CLICKING

UNCLE (PAST)

Wait...think about this...we can talk about this...Oscar please...I was only trying to help...I only wanted what was best for you, can’t you see tha...

ALWYN’S UNCLE never finishes that sentence as he is shot in the heart by the younger ALWYN. His UNCLE’S body falls to the floor with a loud thud.

Bankteller - Open casting

This person deliver the bad news to Silver about his life savings being gone in a monotone/bored voice.

SILVER

You can’t be serious!

BANKTELLER

I’m sorry sir.

SILVER

There were over 50,000 Lumins in there. It’s only been two years, where the hell did it go?

The BANKTELLER sighs.

BANKTELLER

(tired)

This bank is shutting down. We have almost no money left thanks to mismanagement. However, we can offer a sum of 1000 Lumins to you, payable in cash.

SILVER

1000...that’s almost nothing compared to what I trusted this damn bank with! What about the rest of the money? When do I get that?

BANKTELLER

(condescending)

I’m sorry sir. There’s nothing we can do. You should be glad we can even offer you this much. Now, do you accept our payout? There’s a long line of people behind you and we don’t have all night.

SILVER

Fine, just give me the money.

BANKTELLER

Here. No need to be rude.

SFX: LUMINS CLINKING IN BAG

The BANKTELLER hands a bag of 1000 LUMINS to him.

BANKTELLER

(bored)

The Bank of Aminara thanks you for using us, and we wish you the best of luck in the future.

(condescending)

How would you rate the service you received today out of 5? Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

SILVER considers that for a moment.

SILVER

You really want to know. Ok then. A big fat bloody zero. The same amount of Lumins I will have soon. Good night to you!

This person is Alwyn’s ally who he is meeting in the bar. A very shady character.

Irik lunged for his gun.

SFX: GUN CLICKING

SILVER (AS BARTENDER)

Oh we can’t have that.

SILVER SNAPS his fingers, and the gun disappears.

IRIK

What the hell. M-my gun! It’s gone...

ALWYN

What is this madness? Who the hell are you.

IRIK

I don’t care. You’re gonna regret...

GHOSTWEAVER

(calm)

Do you have any children, Mr. Alwyn.

ALWYN

2. John and Emma.

GHOSTWEAVER

And do you care for them.

ALWYN

Of course I do! What father wouldn’t care for their children.

GHOSTWEAVER swipes through memories.

Young EMMA’S voice echoes like a ghost from a distance.

EMMA (PAST)

Please don’t do this, Daddy!

GHOSTWEAVER

Wrong. The last time you saw them was 10 years ago, when you sold them off to pay a debt.

ALWYN

And I don’t regret it. I never liked children, but Margie always wanted them. So I ditched them the first chance I got, ungrateful bastards.

ALWYN

I left her.

GHOSTWEAVER

And did you regret it? Do you still love her?

GHOSTWEAVER swipes through memories.

MARGIE’S voice echoes through the mindscape.

MARGIE (PAST)

Oscar please. I love you.

ALWYN (PAST)

Then you are more of a fool than I thought.

ALWYN (PRESENT)

I never really loved her. Margie needed me far more than I wanted her. She was always so trusting, so naive, it sickened me.
