Voice Acting Competition! [PAID] - From the VA Compendium on Discord

Project Overview

Greetings voice actors!

The VA Compendium is hosting ANOTHER competition. 
Just like last time, there are cash prizes for the winners - plus more!

[Audition Technical Information]

NOTE: These are guidelines. If you don’t know what any of this means, don’t worry too much. But bear in mind, those who get as close to the specs as possible are much more likely to win.

Microphone Quality Standards: At least an AT2020 or NEAT King Bee XLR microphone. 
Other common microphones from winners last time included, but were not limited to: AT4040, CAD e100s, AT2035, RODE NT1, Aston Origin.

Audio Quality Standards: RMS of -15dB, peaks no higher than -3dB. Noise floor removed or below -55dB. Light compression and or normalisation may be needed to achieve this.
Do not submit takes with plosives or clipping. 
Record in a reverbless environment. 
EQ is optional, if you don’t know how to do it refrain from its use.

Acting Quality Standards: You must act out the characters and dialogue to a high standard! Cold reads, emotionless takes and or low effort submissions will never win this competition. Read up your technique if you need to, remember that your body can’t be seen behind a microphone (Actors, I know it’s weird.)

General Advice: Pick a character or characters that would suit your natural voice. Of course feel free to play around with accentation and embellishment, but a voice that simply doesn’t work with the character is unlikely to win. I know this is a pain, ‘cause with only 4 characters that’s very few voices. But simply do your best. 

Additional Notes: 4 Winners, 1 for each role. Each winner receives $25 through paypal. 
2-3 runners up for each role. Each runners up (and the winners) will receive an invite to the VA Compendium Discord.

[Character Rundown]


This character is old, 144 to be precise.
But due to unknown means, they're life has been extended well past the normal human lifespan.

The character remains young, having never aged a day from some point in their 20s.

But they're wise. They've seen a lot in all their time. Made a lot of mistakes, but also helped a lot of people.
They're kind & caring. But they never really want to show that side of themself.


Having lived a long life: they accumulated a vast amount of resources and money.
At one stage they poured everything they had; money & time - all into a project to try to save as many people as possible.
But they were naive. They shouldn't have gone at it alone. It was dangerous trying to bring the change that they did. Violent.
Now, they're trying a different way of living. In the moment. 

  • [Direction] You're getting heated at someone who won't accept anything you say. They just don't seem to get it. Not only that, but you're in a dire situation as it is. As the dialogue goes on, the actor should increase the desperation in their voice.

    [Line]

    "Look, *scoffs* dude... I don't have time for this."
    (Mutters to self)
    "If it were anyone else I swear..."
    (Starts explaining)
    "Listen. We need to get moving! When I got here the bomb in the building had less than 12 minutes on the counter."
    (Start getting more desperate)
    "The walk here was 300 paces... which under normal walking speed would've taken at least a couple minutes... Then I hopped on my bike, went round the corner - ran into you."

    (Outburst)

    "Fuck, you make me so angry I end up rambling and wasting MORE TIME!"
    *Big Sigh, in a huff of anger*
    (Bring it down, reassuring but stern)
    "Look... You just... You need to come with me... now.)

  • [Direction] You've just had an encounter with someone who used to be just like you. They're cold and calculating. But they're bottling everything up. Now you're thinking to yourself for a hot second before responding to them.

    [Line]

    "It'll get her far in life."

    (beat)
    "That cool-headed attitude of hers... But I hope somebody does something to turn this around before she spends half a decade running round... Just like I did. I'm sure... No... Certain... That deep down. Deep down she just wants to be free to be herself. Without all this."
    (beat)
    "Damnit. I should do something."

    (Speaking out loud now.)

    (Shouts to call her back over)
    "Hey!"
    (She walks into normal conversational distance)
    "Look. I didn't want to get involved... But I can clearly see this isn't something you really want."
    (Her reaction confirms it)
    "Let me help you, at least."

[Character Rundown]

 

This is an older sounding chap. He served his country for far too long. Lost a lot of good friends and said goodbye to more than a few enemies.

He was ruthless, determined and absolutely the best at what he did in his prime.

Now, he works as a hired gun.

But he's getting old. Things he never used to catch he now sees.

It bothers him, constantly doing the dirty work.

In his latest mission he and his colleagues were sent to assassinate the princess of some foreign country to stabilise the political situation.

What none of them were told; the princess was only 14.

  • [Direction] Fit of blinding rage after the group starts contemplating the $400,000 hit and actually going through with killing the 14 year old princess.

    [Line]
    "No you most certainly WILL FUCKING NOT!"
    (he pauses to let his outburst sit with the group, then continues)
    "She's a little girl! We killing kids now? What kind of insanity do you think we just stumbled into? What kind of sick fuck orders US, of all people, to even do this?!"
    (The group look awkwardly at each other in silence)

    (He yells at them for a response)

    "HUH?!?!?"

    (2 beats)
    (Calmed down.)
    "Yeah. That's what I thought..."
    (Commanding)
    "Pack your shit we're out of here - and don't give me any excuses. We'll take the girl with us."

  • [Direction] You've just killed 8 people with nothing but a knife and a few boobytraps. The princess watched in horror at the violence and is scared of you. You try to calm her so you can move on. Things have already been rough... All of your team are dead. But in the time you and your team have been protecting the princess, all of you grew closer together. The girl is like a daughter to you after 3 months on the run.

    [Line]

    (Reassuring, like your speaking to a little kid)
    "Hey, hey, hey. Hold on... Shhh Shh Shh... I know, I know."
    (She backs off)
    "Wait... don't be scared. It's gonna be all right... Those men I killed... *sigh*"
    (She looks away)
    "Look at me, it's alright. They would've killed us if given the chance. We had to survive. We're survivors!"
    (Getting emotional as the girl starts to cry.)
    "Hey look... I had to.. I. I won't watch anyone else I care about die.

[Character Rundown]

 

You lead an underground organisation that fights to tell the truth in an era of a massive coverup.

The group is renowned, you are a respected leader.

But you have been leading a long time.

You witnessed countless good people die in "terror" attacks to try to liberate the people. Your family is being held hostage to use as leverage against you.

With all that in the back of your mind; you must continue to be the bold leader.

Send more people to their deaths; and put aside your own family for strategy.

  • [Direction] You are addressing the upper echelon of the group. You must discuss a critical matter with them of things going forward. You begin your speech, and the long night to come.

     

    [Line]

     

    (Booming speech voice, inspirational. Commanding.)

    "It is high time we reviewed our current stratagem."

    (beat)

    "In our recent venture we managed to liberate, from the esteemed bastards in control, a most vital piece of equipment."

    "But since then our success has been stagnant. The enemy is catching on to our movements and soon we'll be on the back foot."

    (rousing the crowd, building atmosphere, building up.)

    "But WE won't let that happen. Will we?"

    "We are the ONLY hope left for millions of people. If we fail here we will be allowing thousands to be enslaved - hell we might as well be bolting the collars ourselves!"

    "Tonight.... Tonight I ask you... As friends, as soldiers."

    (Epic battlecry moment)

    "Give us your support ONE MORE TIME!"

    (Finishing words)

    We will raise their strongholds to the ground & finally... finally earn the freedom we so desire."

  • [Direction] A close friend in the organisation is discussing with you a potential lead. There's a little bit of romantic tension in the air.

     

    [Line]

    (Thinking about all the information presented.)

    "Hmm... It's taken me until now to process all that."

    "But... I'm actually inclined to agree with you."

    (Arguing for the strength of the lead. Diving deep into the information, collecting thoughts.)

    "Looking at it objectively... There's no way the kid or Alec himself should be able to create an investment fund that perfect in such a short period of time."

    "Even if they had some genius friend who had the whole thing planned out... It would still take a while for that kind of money to be processed."

    "For me it would take about a day and a half at minimum. That's constant work. Yet seemingly, they turned it around in... how long? half an hour?"

    "This has all the markings of the AI we've been looking for..."

    (Worried tone, sad, burdened by leadership.)

    "But look... I don't want to commit any more... resources to this. Not more than what's necessary... not now."

[Character Rundown]

You're wild; hot headed and have every reason to be.
The world has pissed and danced on your grave, quite literally, and you have had enough.
You're a frequent drinker and start a fight almost every time. You'll fight anyone - and you never lose.
Inside though: you're hurting. All your friends gave up on you. Now all you have left is talking to other drunks at the bar.
Life has chewed you up and spit you out.
Emotional wreck.

  • [Direction] Someone is looking at you funny. You're lightly buzzed and about ready to hit someone. Your third job interview this week was turned down and you're about ready to take it out on some random dude.

     

     

    (Cocky, arrogant)

    "You looking at anything in particular, jackass?!"

    (Dude turns around, shocked.)

    "Yeah don't like it when the bitches talk back DO YA? Fuckin' creep!"

    (You go back to talking to a friend at the bar.)

    "So... like I was saying. I got turned down... again."

    (They look at you unsurprised.)

    "I didn't even do anything this time!"

    *loud sigh*

    "I spent so long getting my shit together. I got a suit and tie, my hair was done. I brought my A-Game damnit!"

    "And you know who they gave it to? You know the worst fuckin' part?"

    (You take a swig of your drink)

    "They gave it to some backwater whore who could barely braid her hair!"

  • [Direction] Someone came into the bar. You got chatting. They're sweet - and you think you might love them. Ever since you met them your life has been getting back on track. But you're drunk. You didn't think they'd turn up. You told them you'd quit.

     

    (They walk in the bar, notice you drinking and give you a look. They try to turn around but you grab their arm.)

    (Panic, drunk apologetic. Desperate for forgiveness. Worried they might leave you too.)

    "Wait... Please! Just let me explain!"

    (They nod and sit down, reluctantly.)

    "I was just... celebrating. I got that job! Y'know the one you said I should apply for? I GOT IT! Wooooh! hahahahaah"

    (They are unimpressed.)

    "I thought you'd be happy... Look I know I said I had quit drinking... I know I really do."

    (beat)

    "Oh god I've fucked up haven't I?"

    (They get up, ready to walk out.)

    "Wait! Look I can go and sober up in the car... If you'll take me home."

    (They give you a look, wondering why they'd need to drive you.)

    "Uh... I forgot to bring extra money with me to... Get a taxi!"

    (They turn their back in disbelief and march for the exit)

    "Where are you going?!"

    (You lash out)

    "OH YOU'RE GONNA TURN YOUR BACK ON ME TOO?! WELL FUCK YOU! I DON'T NEED YOU I NEVER HAVE."

    (You sit back down in tears.)

    "I'll make it on my own... You'll see."
