The Sword in The Sprawl: Pilot - First Wave

Project Overview

"The Sword in The Sprawl" is an independent animation project created by Matthew Scarpa. It began as a project for a Comics Writing class in college and very quickly evolved to an animated television show script, and from there, progress began exploding. The show locked down character designs, script edits and rewrites progressed, and the story placed or won over three dozen national and international screenwriting competitions. But when the 2023 WGA strike happened, animation picked up the slack and the industry got even more competitive. After shopping the script around, Matthew decided that "The Sword in The Sprawl" would be better handled as an independent project. Now, the show is putting together assets to create a full animation. Story boards, animatics, a proof-of-concept comic and more are in the works, and it's time to step up.   • Extended Deadline

    Hey everyone! Thanks for following the project and if you auditioned, thanks for your audition as well! I went back and looked at the project with non-sleep-deprived eyes and decided that the deadline was a little too quick for the work we're doing and the love we're already getting, so I've extended it until the last day of November! If you have friends or want to audition, no need to sweat the timing as much now! Take your time, have fun with it, and I'll update if anything else changes!

Cid is the protagonist of "The Sword in The Sprawl." A foster home runaway, Cid's inner hurt is masked by his overconfident attitude and his love for adventure. He is a pint-sized treasure hunter, just barely into his teens but with a wit and cunning sharp enough to cut steel. Think of him as Indiana Jones and Robin Hood squished down into that kid who thought he was invincible.

Cid is the Lead for the show and will drive each episode, meaning he will have the most lines.

Lorraine is one of the first obstacles Cid meets. A Knight of the Round with a chip on her shoulder and an unwavering moral compass, Lorraine acts first as Cid's foil, then his conscience, often forcing him to change his plan under threat of bodily harm and/or arrest. Her morals are only outshone by her muscles, though, and when Cid's in danger, she'll step up to bat for him because if anyone's going to bring him in for rule breaking, it's going to be Lorraine.

Lorraine is a secondary protagonist who will appear in most episodes and drive the story alongside Cid.

Magus is a Dwarf with a mysterious past and an eye for the finer things - but only one! He is Cid's mentor and fence, and he taught the boy everything he knows about "illicit treasure acquisitions." Magus has that "non-nonsense dad" energy and will often be one of the first to call Cid's shenanigans out, but often from a place of caring as opposed to Lorraine's annoyance.

Magus is a tertiary protagonist meaning that he will show up in most episode but to a lesser degree than Cid or Lorraine.

Gilbert is an overnight crime lord, prone to angry outbursts and is generally unpleasant to be around. What he lacks in the way of charm or charisma, he makes up for in pure ruthlesness and love of the game. He's even got the villain monolouging down! As far as things go, you couldn't find a more vile guy - unless you met a used car salesman.

Gilbert is the first major antagonist to the story and as such, will be very prominent in the show.
