The Otherlands [CASTING WAVE THREE]

The Otherlands [CASTING WAVE THREE]

Project Overview

Hello, and thank you for checking out this project page! The Otherlands is a passion project of mine that I've been working on for the past three years, and I would absolutely love for you to be a part of it.

This is for the second of four waves of casting! There will possibly be a fifth, but four are guaranteed. As of August 16th, about half of the roles are available to be auditioned for. One-off characters and extras will be added in exactly one month.

⁣

⁣PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A LONG-TERM PROJECT!! It is also unpaid, as I do not have the resources for that at the moment. Please keep that in mind, and please read the project description below!

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ IMPORTANT:

⁣

Two very important things to note. This project is 15+. This is partly because I am 18, and that's the age I'm comfortable working with, and also because of the subject matter at hand. There's a full list of trigger warnings in the document linked below, so please check that out before you audition!

⁣

⁣

The other thing of note is that this project is not going to put out in any 'traditional' format. It's going to be a dramatic reading of a screenplay, with elements of a audio drama and podcast slipped in as well. I will upload these readings to Youtube, as well as a transcript of the screenplay itself if anybody wants/needs to read along. With that noted, this project won't be very challenging to put together, so we can focus more on the voice acting and character work than anything else!

⁣

⁣

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ The Premise

⁣

The Otherlands is a TV show about magic.

⁣

⁣

It's set in a small area of Oregon, where only the people who have the gene for magic can remember it. This is because of an old curse that was put up fifteen years before the story starts. The reason behind this isn't known, but will be discovered as the plot goes on! The Otherlands is its own community, with different towns and species living inside it, hidden from the rest of the world.

⁣

⁣

Eighteen-year-old Beau Landon goes missing on a seemingly normal day, leaving his younger brother Henry a set of clues that only he was supposed to find. To make matters even more complicated for Henry, these lead him to discover that he can now remember the existence of magic--something he didn't even think was possible until that very day. He discovers that Beau's disappearance has something to do with this magical world, and makes it his goal to be the one to rescue him from the clutches of the organization that took him.

⁣

⁣

With the help of his best friend, a pair of magical twins, and a boy with fire powers that they end up summoning, Henry traverses the areas of the Otherlands to try and find Beau, all the while learning about magic and the world that it hides. But the further he gets, the more he realizes that things may not be what they seem. Even the members of his friend group are hiding things... and maybe Beau isn't the person that Henry thought he was.

⁣

⁣

As the show goes on into further seasons, its revealed just how complicated the organizations trying to take down that barrier are, and the characters get themselves wrapped up in the long battle that it's caused. Helping the world should not be such a complicated feat, but different people have different ideas on what the greater good really is.

⁣

⁣

If you'd like even further notes about this premise, please check out this document I wrote that goes into more detail! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1k1LpAA05mHWx506F3S-gL1Mb7voUdBfnHJ9phJa5ZWM/edit?usp=sharing

⁣

⁣

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ Extra Notes

⁣

The show highlights how nobody is truly good or bad, humans have the capability to be extremely nuanced. It also focuses heavily on character relationships (mostly platonic/familial), and how they help shape the fundamental core of a person.

⁣

⁣

Also, this a very queer-positive show. Almost the entire cast is somewhere in the LGBTQ+ community, though that's not something that's intensely focused on in the plot. There are some queer sub-plots, but it's mostly just a part of the character. Queer people are much more than their gender or sexuality, and they can grow and learn about themselves while living full lives that are focused on other things. That's something I wanted to show through The Otherlands, so most sexualities and genders are only referenced or implied through dialogue.

⁣

⁣

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ The Goal

⁣

The Otherlands is four seasons, with nine episodes in each. Even though I'm only casting for the first episode, the goal of this project would be to voice through all of them. If this pilot goes well, I'll put out more waves of casting for further characters that will appear later on!

⁣

⁣

I know that it may be discouraging to see that it's not a paid project, especially with the effort stated above, but I'm only a community college student. I currently don't have the funds to be able to do that, so I'm running this completely on my passion and love for the series.

⁣

⁣

⋆˚₊ 𖤓☽˚.⋆ For your audition! It is required to include your:

⁣

  • Name

  • Age

  • Pronouns⁣

  • Timezone

  • Discord

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE ABOVE INFORMATION , I WILL NOT BE CONSIDERING YOUR SUBMISSION. I consider this to be an indicator that you read all of the information, which is important for a long-term project like this one.

⁣

If you want to add your setup, that would be great as well, but it's not necessary.

⁣

⁣

Thank you so much for reading all of this, and I hope to see your audition below!

Latest Updates

  • IMPORTANT: Temporary deadline change and emergency re-cast.

You may have noticed the deadline suddenly get a lotttt closer. Don't panic!! It's only that close because I need to re-cast a role from the first wave in the next few days, so I can keep working on episode one. After that passes, I will re-extend it to the two week deadline that I had before. :)

    ⁣

(And even then, there is a chance that there will be a third push--it all depends on the amount of auditions.)

    ⁣

Thank you, and I'm loving all my submissions so far!

Eli (they/any) is 16 and an old friend of Penn's, but they had a falling out about a year ago. After Henry learns that magic is real, Penn recruits Eli and their twin brother to help them with their goal. Eli is outgoing and optimistic, someone who tries to look on the bright side at all times. They're sweet and great at making friends, even if they do struggle with self-doubt at times.

⁣

Current voice claim: Glimmer (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power)

  • (Trying to keep the peace) "August. Can you at least not do this in front of me and- What's your name?"

  • (Excited, jumping at the chance to see their friend again) "I can come too, if you need extra help! Walking to North Acres is just a day-or-two trip, if we try hard enough and avoid people. I've done it before!"

  • (Distraught, talking to a photo of a passed on loved one) "How could you just... leave like that? I don't get it, why- why didn't you tell me you were dying? You saved us, but... I just wish you could have saved us and stayed.""

Minerva (she/her) is the 39 year old second in command of the Guard. She is slightly brash and aggressive–though she does try to appear laid back. She's bad at emotional honesty when it comes to her own problems, but she's an amazing listener. She doesn't seem to take much seriously if she doesn't have to, though she can snap quickly into her role of authority. She is extremely loyal, with a big heart and a dedication to her Guard and her loved ones that drives her in her actions.

⁣

Though she doesn't appear until season two, I know that I am going to be picky with her voice, so I am opening the role early to allow myself more time for deliberation if needed.

⁣

Current voice claim: Eda from The Owl House. While the voice doesn't need to be as raspy, I'd appreciate the same type of tone!

  • (Snarky, cooly-disguised hatred) "Take a leaf out of your own book for once, Lauren. Or maybe just spend some time on yourself. That stick might actually remove itself from your ass."

  • (Soft, an attempt at comfort) "I don't give a shit about what the world says about you. You're my best friend. If that hasn't changed by now, it's never going to. You could murder a man in front of me, and I would find a reason to forgive you. Anything, anywhere, anytime."

  • (Rising emotion) "God, you're such a monster! You're a horrible person, and everyone just bends to your whims because they're too naive to see it! He almost died because of you, because you can't give him any grace-!" (She cuts off, taking a deep breath to steady herself.) (Bitter ->) ".. So fuck you. Go to hell, for all I care."

Rufus (he/him) is 33, and he is the owner of a safe space cafe in North Acres. He is kind above all else, and a genuinely good person. He has a personal code of pacifism, which he tries his best to uphold throughout the show while also struggling with feelings of inadequacy. He tries to be a father figure and role model for any children in need, especially those who are queer in some way, or those who come from unfit homes.

⁣

Though he doesn't appear until season two, he is under the same bracket as Minerva–because I can tell I'm going to be picky with his voice, I'm opening him early.

⁣

NOTE: He tends to stutter when he gets stressed. If you'd like to implement this into the more emotional lines, go ahead!

  • (Welcoming) "Come on in! Welcome to Cafe Melrose! My name is Rufus, the owner--take your time to look at the menu, and let me know if I can get you anything! SInce it's your first time here, you can have any drink of your choice on the house."

  • (Solemn) "I don't belong here anymore, Minerva. I can't fight. And even if I could, I wouldn't want to. Besides, I... I really don't think he'd want to see me again, after... what happened."

  • (Completely desperate, trying and struggling to keep calm) "You can't die. What about the Guard? What about all of the people who need you? N-No matter what you think about yourself, or what you've done, you-- you're all we have left. You're all I have left."

Charlotte (she/her) is the grandmother of two of the major characters. She's rich and accidentally entitled, though she doesn't exactly know that she's being rude when she is. She tries her hardest, though sometimes her hardest isn't enough.

⁣

Charlotte is a minor role in season one, who may come back for a line or two in future episodes.

⁣

(Please be okay with voicing a transphobic character! However, there is no aggressive transphobia, think religious grandmother who doesn't know any better.)

  • (Offended) "How am I selfish, Mallory, for wanting to spend time with my own granddaughters? Granddaughters who haven't given enough care to show up once in months? All I want is a day with you two."

  • (Nervous, talking to someone who she's secretly afraid of) "What are you going through with, exactly? You still haven't told me what your goal is-- and... do I not need to know, being the host?"

Edric James, or E.J, is 19 years old, and the twin brother of Arden. The loss of his sibling broke something in him, making him cold and desperate for revenge. He specifically hates Acheran and Atlas, thinking that they are the reasons that Arden is dead.

⁣

E.J is a minor role in season one, has a cameo in the third season, and then becomes a recurring villain in season four.

Arden (they/them) is a character shown only through flashbacks. They were seventeen when they died. They haunt the narrative of one of the major characters, taking the role of the dead ex-partner. They were extremely sweet and bubbly while they were alive, wanting nothing more than to help the people around them and to live their life to the fullest.

⁣

Arden is a minor recurring role throughout the series.

James "J." Fonder (he/him) is the Otherlands' chief of police. A minor role, he is an unfair keeper of the law, and one of the examples as to why the Otherlands' police force can not be trusted or relied on.

⁣

This character, while he does not say anything outrageous, is both homophobic and transphobic. Please be comfortable with these implications if you are to audition for him

  • (Fed up) "Didn't you hear me? I said, I'm not helping with this. That's the final word. Now, I advise you three get out of my office, and go home."

Beck Baker (he/him) is a fifteen year old boy who went missing before the show started. He is kind, naive, and acts slightly younger than his age due to the nature of his current state of being. (What that is, though, is spoilers. :))

Beck will come back for an episode or two a season, up until season three.

  • (A desperate reveal that nothing is as it seems.) "You don't have a choice, Penn. All of this... it hurts too much. I'm so tired of being alone. But you... you're going to help me! We can be together again, and you're going to let me be free!"
