Where's Willow? [Original Animated Series]

Project Overview

Where’s Willow? - A Firefly City Story is an original, story-focused animated series about the ghost of a missing hiker who roams the wilderness of a vast national park. When she crosses paths with an isolated park ranger who blames himself for her demise, the two embark on a journey of adventure, understanding, and mischief that will guide them both through some of life’s greatest challenges… and beyond.

You can find the show website at https://whereswillowseries.com/. There is info on behind-the-scenes, the story world, and more there if you're interested.

Quick background on the show:

- This show is intended for young adult audiences and older due to the fact that it covers topics likely to be more relatable to those with a little more life experience.

- Topics mentioned include mental health, loss/death, and wilderness survival. It can get emotional. College, career choices, and relationships are also relevant. The show may include flashing lights and loud noises.

- There is a small, infrequent amount of mild language in the show (e.g. "damn it," "what the hell" are about as far as it goes).

- Inspirations include games such as Night in the Woods, Spiritfarer, Firewatch, RiME, shows such as Gravity Falls and Missing 411, (no affiliation with any mentioned) as well as personal experiences.

- In the project thumbnail, Willow is the character on the left. She is a ghost, and thus she doesn't really talk.

- The character on the right is park ranger Ernest Green. I voice him myself, as well as a couple other miscellaneous characters. Here is an example of me voicing him. There are examples of my voice on my profile in my own reel as well.

- The main video on this page is the show's theme song/intro.

Technical details:

- This is a 10-episode (plus some shorts), story-focused, rig-animated series. Not comedy-focused.

- It is intended for YouTube (a new channel) and Newgrounds at minimum, with shorts going on other platforms as well.

- At the time of this casting call opening, all scripts are fully written, and the total line count for each character is definitively known. More details on total lines per character are in character descriptions.

- Most animation work that does not require external voice acting talent has been completed already, as I wanted to be sure this project would reach completion before opening up the casting call.

- Not all characters appear in every episode. Most of the characters being cast here don't start appearing sporadically until Episode 2.

- I do all writing, artwork, animation, music composition, and editing myself, and have been working towards this and related projects (Firefly City Stories) solo since 2020. At this point, it is nearing completion and is set to start releasing after a reasonable marketing run has completed.

- This project is entirely self-funded by me out of pocket. My budget is limited, but I've done my best to keep payment within what's recommended (see below).

Voice acting details:

Auditioning:

- Auditions are for those 18 and older. This is because there is a contract, and also because these characters are all above this age themselves (see character list).

- Feel free to audition for multiple characters if interested! Please keep each audition under each character's section though.

- Anything in brackets is of course just stage instruction to give you context. No need to read them aloud.

- Please use AABBCC format, no more than two takes, and do not slate. Voices should be more grounded and natural (not "cartoony" or "anime-like"), though there will be a few goofy moments particularly with Reggie.

- Please shoot for the best and cleanest audio quality (XLR preferred) that you can get.

- This audition will be open for two weeks. To ensure everyone that follows instructions gets a fair shot and doesn't feel rushed, I won't be going through auditions until the casting call closes. Just so you aren't wondering if you don't hear from me directly after auditioning!

- I will be checking back in frequently though to answer any questions!

Once cast:

- This work (for those cast) involves a contract to protect both you and I. It is built from the contract recommended by the Voice Acting Club in addition to the NAVA anti-AI rider (if you'd like a preview). It includes an agreement that I do NOT use "gen AI" in any part of production whatsoever, voice talent must NOT use "gen AI" to complete work for this project either, an NDA, and the payment agreement (see rates below).

- I would prefer to pay you via PayPal or Stripe, up front (after contract signing) and before the start of work.

- Payment was decided while referencing the VAC rates guide at $4/line, but everyone will be paid at least $50. This is an indie, self-funded project (that is technically mid-tier), but I went up a bit to be safe/fair. The prices you see on each character are the totals they'll be paid.
- After casting/contracting/payment, I will provide scripts for each character with key instructions. I will be available to provide more resources or clarification if you need.

- Turnaround on work for those cast would be within 30 days of when you receive a script, but sooner would be appreciated.

- Recording can be done on your own (non-directed), and we can communicate via CCC, email (preferred), or Discord DM's.

- Again, please shoot for the best and cleanest audio quality (XLR preferred) that you can get. Try to avoid background noise, loud plosives, and sibilance, as well as static pops, crackles, and similar technical glitches as these are nearly unfixable. I would prefer to handle post processing myself for consistency.

I hope to hear from you! 🎙

I've been making videos for a while, but I've never written a casting call before. I tried to be very thorough here and do my research, but if I missed something, feel free to comment questions or concerns!

Thanks for stopping by!

- Mitch R.

  • Thank You! Auditions are now closed!

Thank you to everyone who auditioned for this project! It means a lot that so many folks took the time to try out! I wish I had a role for everyone, but as I've mentioned I do have more projects tentatively planned for the future as well!

    .

I'm looking forward to going through auditions over the next few days. I aim to have this done by the end of the week at the latest. I will save any casting notifications until after I have decided on all four characters to avoid confusing anyone.

    .

If you would like to keep up with the project, you can find all of its related social media on the official website at https://www.whereswillowseries.com

P.S. The dots are here because apparently CCC doesn't like hard returns on paragraph breaks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Chief Park Ranger Andrea Carter
closed
Paid: Flat Rate 260 USD
Role assigned to: Shelby T

Andrea is the Chief Ranger of the Starlight Mountains Sunset Valley region. Known for her achievements in rock climbing and mountaineering on local peaks, Andrea is well-respected in Sunset Valley for her management of the park throughout her established career. She has knowledge of much of the park's history, hazards, and protocols, and is always willing to offer advice, guidance, and information.

She is the supervisor of one of the main characters (Ernest), and is one of the few locals sympathetic to his problems. She tries to encourage him, as he is still a new hire, but also has to remain professional.

- Character Age: Mid to late 30's (not super important though)

- Accent: Mild American Southern (very mild, for example, how I voice Ernest - see main casting call description)

- Personality: Friendly, supportive, confident, but also serious when appropriate

Voice Reference: Don't feel restricted to matching anything here, but if you're stuck, they may help. One | Two

Total pay for total number of lines: $260 for 65 lines ($4 / line)

- Function: Secondary character

  • [She is peeking her head in a door here] Hey, uhh, Ernest? Just wanted to say you’re doing a great job out there and… well don’t listen to them, people around here tend to be… stuck in their ways... It can take a while for them to warm up to you.

  • [Being interviewed on the news] It is true that… well, at this point in the search, we’re still unsure as to the whereabouts of Miss Brooks, but we are doing everything in our power to find her and bring her home safely. I urge everyone not to panic, but keep Willow in your thoughts.

  • [Giving Ernest a job to do as his boss] Now, yesterday that rainstorm knocked out one of the fire lookout cameras over at Tower 22. I’d appreciate it if you could get out there and fix it. Could you do that?

Reggie Branta

Paid: Flat Rate 252 USD
Role assigned to: Roake Pawlikowski

Reggie is a local resident of Sunset Valley who enjoys hiking, camping, and bushcraft, especially when he gets to do these things with his friends. Due to his fondness for outdoor activities and his desire to keep the area the same as it has always been for locals, Reggie sees the policies of the park as out-of-touch government interference. With the disappearance of Willow and many subsequent rule changes, he sees Ernest as the focal point of many of these problems and makes no effort to hide his opinions.

- Character Age: Early 30's (not super important though)

- Accent: Mild American Southern, possibly with voice cracks here and there (his character design is inspired by a goose).

- Personality: Unfriendly, accusatory, mean

Voice Reference: I originally planned to voice Reggie myself, but I am no longer going to because I got a little more funding, I feel like someone else could do it better, and I'm voicing Ernest anyway which would've been too similar. Here is one clip I had done though. Don't feel obligated to imitate this (what do you think he should sound like?), but if you need a starting point, it may help too.

Total pay for total number of lines: $252 for 63 lines ($4 / line)

- Function: Antagonist, Comic Relief, Secondary character

Note: Reggie screams in fear three times total. Two shorter startled screams, and one long and somewhat comedic scream (as he runs away). He also needs to snore for a few seconds. Just making a note so no one is caught off guard if cast as Reggie.

  • [Accusing] You come here and start nitpicking every aspect of our lives... We live out here to be away from government types like you!

  • [Telling a scary story] They say she waits in the forest for the unwary traveler, ready to claim them as her own. Her face is all deathly pale and her eyes glow with an unnatural light. Those who encounter her are destined to meet an... untimely end.

  • [Panicking] You wanted to help so bad… call park resources! Call Andrea! Do something!

Willow's Grandma

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD
Role assigned to: Felicity Naomi

Willow's grandmother makes two brief appearances during flashbacks. She encourages Willow, who is alive in the flashbacks, that she will do great things in the future. Willow grew up with her, and even when she has gone off to college her grandma's house is a place of comfort and refuge from the stresses she experiences.

- Character Age: Elderly (but the role is open to anyone who can voice her effectively of course)

- Accent: Neutral

- Personality: A kindly, grandmotherly voice with a hint of wistfulness.

Total pay for total number of lines: $40 for 10 lines ($4 / line), but the minimum brings it up to $50.

- Function: Character that appears in a few flashbacks

Note: This is a minor role for this project (appearing with lines in two episodes).

Language:
  • english
Voice description:

  • elderly

  • [Predicting her grandaughter Willow's future through pyromancy - ominous but empathetic] A flickering flame… sparking and swirling… I sense some… uncertainty in your future.

  • [With caring concern] Nothing is the matter, is there, Willow? You know I'll always be here to listen.

  • [Encouraging Willow] You’ve always been so sure of yourself. So eager to try new things… I’m sure you’ll make a difference out there in the world.

- Character Age: Late 20's - early 30's (not super important though)

- Accent: Typical news broadcaster

- Personality: Professional

- Voice Reference: News anchors in general. Here are two short YouTube references: One | Two

- Total pay for total number of lines: $20 for 5 lines ($4 / line), but the minimum brings it up to $50.

Voice description:
