Sky&Sea

Project Overview

Hey everyone! I’m looking for voice actors for a short film I’m currently animating called Sky&Sea! The film is about 6-7 minutes long, but there’s only dialogue for about half of the runtime.

The story is set in a very light/loose renaissance/fantasy setting, but the main focus is really just on the buildup to two characters running into  each other.I’ve got five characters in it, one young/slightly reckless father who’s trying his best, one adventurous little girl who doesn’t listen, the same girl some years later when she crash lands in an unfamiliar place, and three boys. One little kid who swings from bored and tired to excited in a split second and smiles a lot, an older boy who’s more calm and confident, and another one around the same age who’s trying to act more wise and mature than he really is.

All roles are in English and some characters have more non-dialogue voice acting than actual written lines. More info on individual characters and the script can be found in the specific role openings. At the moment I have a rough animatic completed (no audio) and have started animating some of the scenes that don’t have dialogue.

Due to deadlines for the film Ideally we’d be able to get the voicework completed by the end of the month so I can animate the dialogue scenes with your voices to guide the acting. (Film deadline is : June 15th) I do want to pay each voice actor but due to my financial situation its really more of a tip than a fair wage. Should be able to pay each voice actor around 30-50$cad by the end of May.

If you’re curious about my previous work/art you can find it on twitter @Isaacmillart. It’s my first time working on such a big project and I’m using it as a chance to push myself and learn, hopefully it can be the same for you!

Latest Updates

  • Auditions closed

Hi everyone! Just want to share a general update for everyone who’s following the project.

Submissions are closed, and I’ve listened to every submission and taken notes. This afternoon after a lot of comparison I finally picked the voices I feel match the characters In my head the best.

A huge thanks to everyone who decided to take the time to record audition lines for this short! I’m really humbled by all the kind words and auditions the project has received, and It’s motivated me even more to try and live up to expectations and make the most of it.

Another thanks to those of you who recorded second takes after my initial feedback, I was originally planning on giving personalized feedback to everyone, but quickly realized that It’d take a lot of time away from finishing backgrounds and animating.

I suppose I’ll keep updating the project on here for anyone who is curious about its development? It’s my first time using this site so I’m not sure how it’s usually done.

The tentative production schedule goes like this.

All BG paintings completed by April 18th

Final dialogue lines recorded by April 22nd

Keyframe animation completed by May 25th

All frames coloured by June 5th

Sound design competed by June 10th

Quick compositing Done by the 14th

Submission to film festival on the 15th

    “Extended edition”

Due to the time limit with film festival submissions it’s quite likely that I’ll have to cut certain shots, or have animation that could use a bit more work in the initial release. Sot there’s a good chance I’ll keep working on refining certain shots and adding in cut scenes.

This version has no strict deadline but It’ll definitely be done by the end of summer if I choose to do it. And it’ll be published on the same Youtube channel as the animatic linked above.

    Thanks again!

    Isaac,

-She’s an adventurous girl fascinated by the skies and flying. (Somewhere around the age of 12-14?) Brave and confident most of the time and able to figure things out on her own, but like most kids or even most people, when alone in a dark and unfamiliar place her imagination can take over and give into irrational fears.

This is one of the two main characters in the short film, but since she's all alone for most of the film she doesn't have a lot of lines. A fair portion of the acting will consist of other noises like a sharp inhale, a mumbling groan as she wakes up, etc. The film as a whole is around 6:30 to 7 minutes long but around half of it is essentially without dialogue.

If you can read the scrip before recording the audition lines it should help give a bit more context to the scenes.

Adventurous and free spirited, maybe a bit reckless too, his daughter takes after him very well. But as a young dad he isn’t quite sure how to discipline or handle such a wild and energetic girl. He’s kind and would much rather play with his daughter than discipline her but in this short we see him do his best as he comes up with a ghost-story to try and keep her safe.

Age wise I’d say mid 20’s to mid 30’s range will work. Shouldn’t sound like a teenager though, and not an old/mature man either.

This character only shows up for one flashback sequence, but due to the nature of the sequence he ends up being one of the characters with the most lines. One scene in particular lasts over a minute and its just him telling his ghost story so that's a key moment. The film as a whole is around 6:30 to 7 minutes long but around half of it is essentially without dialogue.

If you can read the scrip before recording the audition lines it should help give a bit more context to the scenes.

  • Shot 23 - Mid shot of the girl looking over the edge, we see the dad’s boots in shot as he takes the last step and then taps his foot to get her attention. Dad- You know you aren’t supposed to lean over the edge like that….

  • Shot 29 - He crouches down, looks seriously into the girls eyes. "Well I am scared, and here’s why you should be too…." The girls curiosity is piqued and she looks at her dad questioningly, "I didn’t want to tell you this, but there’s no other way to convince you not to go near the cliffs." *clears throat* "-Below the clouds, roam the restless spirits of pilots who’ve died or gotten lost in the past..."

As a little girl (during the flashback, age 4-6) she wants nothing more than to go flying amongst the clouds from island to island like her dad. Her dad, worried about her safety doesn’t want her playing near the edge of the islands but she always sneaks away anyways.

This character is one of the two main characters in the story, but again only has a few lines. Mostly little quips and comments reacting to what her dad says. On top of that maybe a bit of non dialogue acting such as pouting noises, a little whimper as she gets scared, etc. The film as a whole is around 6:30 to 7 minutes long but around half of it is essentially without dialogue.

If you can read the scrip before recording the audition lines it should help give a bit more context to the scenes.

This kid has two modes, bored/tired or excited and full of energy. He can switch from one to the other in a second and when he’s excited it can sometimes be a bit much for others to handle/bear. The younger brother of the three boys essentially, (whether they’re related or not is undetermined). The kid is still filled with that sense of wonder for anything new and this whole dragon event has got his imagination racing despite how scary it might be. (Age around 5-6 yrs old)

This character Is around for a fair portion of the film but has no extensive dialogue. His lines largely consist of short one liners or reactions to the events happening around him. The film as a whole is around 6:30 to 7 minutes long but around half of it is essentially without dialogue.

The kid with a buzz cut who is first seen fishing in the boat. Out of the three boys in the story he’s actually the most mature. Age wise somewhere around 13-15 years old. He actually likes fishing and finds it relaxing but also has a passion for telling stories. Not easily fooled, he quickly see’s through the other boy's pompous attitude and calls him out on it.

This character has a fair amount of dialogue for this film, most of it consists of his conversation/argument with the other older boy in the short. He first tries to re-tell what happened in a dramatic way and then calls out the other boy on his "too old for this sorta thing" attitude.

If you can read the scrip before recording the audition lines it should help give a bit more context to the scenes.

"-HE spotted it first, cause he wasn’t even fishing… (pointing to the little kid) -But anyways, there was HUGE fiery thing in the sky! -It was some sort of flying monster!!"

  • Shot 36 - Close up of the boys, "Oh yeah? Well if you’re so sure that dragons aren’t real… Why don’t YOU go and check it out… alone!"

This kid is only a year or so younger than the fishing boy, but has a bit of an ego and likes to act like the adult of the group at times. “Too cool to play tag” kinda vibes. Despite that he always joins in eventually because in the end he still wants to have fun. We first see him as he’s working on a fish trap and he tries to play off the whole dragon story as “kids stuff”, when the other older boy calls his bluff his ego won’t let him back off and so he agrees to go check out the crash site despite his fears.

This character has a fair amount of dialogue for this film, most of it consists of his conversation/argument with the other older boy in the short. Later on there're a few scenes where he mutters to himself and one line when he meets the pilot girl.

  • Shot 37 - "ALRIGHT! I WILL GO AND SEE YOUR “DRAGON”, GET THE BOAT READY!!!"
