Sim Settlements (Fallout 4 Gameplay Overhaul Mod)

Project Overview

What is Sim Settlements?

Sim Settlements re-imagines the settlement system of Fallout 4 as a simulation management game with tons of automation tools. This lets players make settlements their primary gameplay focus, or transform them into new areas to explore each playthrough.

Beginning with the Conqueror expansion, we introduced a story campaign. We're continuing this approach, of providing a narrative to drive the gameplay forward while simultaneously teaching players the complex systems in an immersive and intuitive way.

Our focus is on gameplay systems, quests, and experiences that are so high-production value and seamless with the core game, that players will mistake the mod as something created by Bethesda themselves.

Who are we looking for?

We are currently looking for voice actors with at least a condenser mic with a cardiod polar pattern with a Pop Filter (An AT2020 XLR mic set up would be a good starting point), decent amount of voice acting or real life acting experience, and 18 years of age, to take upon roles within our project.

For those that audition and don’t make the cut, don’t lose heart as there are more characters to be up for grabs on this casting call page. This is only one viewable batch of characters out of the many batches that will be released and that we need your help on voicing. Do note that the roles listed in this casting call that you currently can see are not all available roles for the project, more will be added over the coming months. That being said, the deadline will be changed after each casting of old characters and accompanied posting of new characters. If a race/gender combination is not listed that you might want to try, send me a PM here on Casting Call Club!

Instructions for Auditioning Voice Actors:

We request that all VAs who are interested are able to communicate and send/receive files through Discord servers and DMs as well as utilize google spreadsheets, Google Docs, and Google Drive/Mega.Nz. On Discord, you will be communicating with me (@ACTIONFIGHTER11#2791) via DMs or through text channels on the Sim Settlements discord server. If you are casted, you will receive your lines within a week through discord along with recording instructions, deadline, accent specifications, character bios, and line directions.

For audition audio submissions for this casting call, please provide the raw audio files (no processing) for your audition submissions and within the file name, please include your CCC name and the name of the character you are auditioning for with that submission.

Further audio quality instructions and settings (These will apply for your actual line submissions if you are cast

1. Set the gain on the mic to "not windows" so then normal tones will average around -20 db. If you have to shout and it peaks, use a hard limiter or limiter set at -0.5 dB.

2. Keep a distance of 12-15 inches from the microphone itself (not the pop filter).

3. If you are near your laptop or PC, it must be behind the microphone so that the microphone is set up between you and the PC/Laptop. You must then also put something between the PC and the microphone to block the laptop/PC sounds.

4. Keep notes of your mic settings, your position, etc. when recording to duplicate it exactly when recording lines if you are cast. If you are casted for a recurring character, you will not be allowed to change your settings, position of mic, etc. at all because we need consistency in the recordings.

5. Never change the gain while recording and try not to move your head or your body in any direction while recording.

6. Before you start to record your audition, first record some loud laughter and adjust your gain level so that the laughter does not peak. Once that is done, do not change gain settings at all during recording. Although normal volume level talking will sound soft, that is what our audio team wants.

If you do request to communicate with us through Email or another communication software, please send a private message to my profile on Casting Call Club and explain your situation. I will work with you via CCC Private Messaging to find a solution.

For all characters, we expect lines to be sent back following the correct organization and formatting specified during DM conversation within a month of receiving the script. If recording your lines takes more than a month, please notify me as soon as possible via Discord DMs and we can work out a solution.

If you do not notify me of the possibility that a one month turn around time is not enough when that is the case, I will be proceeding with the standard procedure by expecting line submissions within a month of receiving the script. If you are casted and have any complications, please notify myself via Discord DMs as soon as possible.

Lead characters will have over 100 lines. (If you are casted or auditioning for a major character, make sure you have enough time set aside for recording.) Supporting characters will have between 100 lines and 20 lines. Minor characters will have between 20 lines and 10 lines. Extra characters will have less than 10 lines.

Non-human characters that require significant audio effects or modulation will have a special tag in their name. Pre - Existing Fallout Franchise Characters that require voice actors who can impersonate the original voice files from the Fallout games they appear in will have a (Needs Impersonator) tag next to their name. Non-human characters include ghouls and robots. Any filters involved like gas masks or power armor helmets will not need to be done by voice actors or be added to the audition files. We mention them just as a reference for your own convenience. Unless we specify a specific accent, all characters, no matter what species, are to have the regular North American accent.

Due to the number of auditions per day that I need to process, I am requesting that anyone who auditions for a ghoul character for this casting call and moving forward, provides a ghoul rasp within their auditions for said character. Examples of the ghoul rasp are provided in the descriptions of these characters in the form of a link to a video. You can also look up how ghoul rasps sound in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. If you do not provide a ghoul rasp for an audition to a ghoul character, I will refuse to look over that audition.

You should record all audition lines included for each character. For each audition line, record one take. Be sure to follow the scene context and line instructions provided for the audition line. You should be recording through an audio recording software like Audacity or Adobe Audition. You should export and submit your audition as a .wav audio file with the settings of 44.1 khz, 16 bits, and mono recording format. You do not need to limit yourself in the amount of characters you audition for. In some cases, we go ahead and cast a voice actor for two roles if they're capable of providing effective and different sounding performances for both.

If you get casted, but we lose contact with you for over a month without notice and with no ability to reach you, we will open your role again and cast someone else.

Once the deadline date is reached for a certain batch of characters, we will no longer accept more auditions for the specified roles within that batch. Over the next few days or so, we will go over the submitted auditions and cast our characters.

CCC will automatically send you a message if you get casted. Additionally, we will send a private message to your CCC profile containing information on how to join a discord server where voice acting for Sim Settlements is managed. If there are any complications preventing that, please respond to our private message as soon as possible and we will work out solutions with you.

Best of luck! I look forward to hearing your great auditions!

Latest Updates

  • Casting Decisions for Cleff, April Li, and Gremlin!

We have decided to cast Cleff to Jenk City, April Li to Caitlinva, and Gremlin to AliceAlive!
  • Sim Settlements Casting Call Round 2 Status Update!

Hey everyone, after further discussion and for the purpose of getting more attention towards the casting call, we will be extending the deadline of this casting call by quite a few days. Casting decisions for certain characters may be announced in the coming days.
  • Sim Settlements Casting Call Round 2 Deadline Reached

As you all may know, we have reached the deadline for this second round of characters in the Sim Settlements Casting Call, so that means we will no longer be accepting further auditions for the characters currently listed below. We will be looking over all auditions extensively and posting our casting decisions for each character soon. We would like to thank everyone that auditioned for taking the time to give great deliveries for the characters we listed. Once we release the casting decisions, we will contact those we have casted through CCC DMs to provide further instructions. For those that submitted auditions but end up not being casted, fear not as perhaps you will find success in a future role listed here or are possibly being considered for a type of character not present here currently. If any of you viewing this casting call didn't manage to submit an audition in time, don't worry, as there'll be plenty of batches of characters that will be pushed out here in the future that you can audition for. Once again, the deadline has been reached for the current batch of characters and we will be releasing our casting decisions for the characters below shortly.
  • Update Regarding Audio Quality

Hello, for future audio submissions for this casting call, please provide the raw audio files (no processing) for your audition submissions and within the file name, please include your CCC name and the name of the character you are auditioning for with that submission.
  • Sim Settlements Casting Call Round 2 Starts Now!

Hey guys! Round 2 of the Sim Settlements Casting Call is up and running. We have added 3 new characters and are still looking for voice actors to fill the uncasted roles from the last round! One important note: all casted VAs will be required to use google spreadsheet or excel spreadsheet. We will be providing lines in spreadsheet format for organization and streamlining of format through which all Frontier development personnel write out and utilize written dialogue. Also, due to the amount of auditions we receive, auditions with severe audio quality (background noise or mic quality) problems as well as auditions for ghoul characters without a ghoul rasp will be automatically disqualified. Please also make sure to remove as much static background noise from your auditions as possible as well as remove unnecessary blanks in audio between the audition line readings. We hope that everyone who auditioned, casted or not, gets a learning experience at least from their audition but we also ask that participants meet the requirements. This casting call should be used by voice actors that meet this casting call’s requirements and not beginner voice actors as a learning experience. The rules present from the previous round still apply here. The deadline for submitting auditions is July 18th, 2019. If you have any questions about the casting call, contact @ACTIONFIGHTER11 (Fallout ACTION) via Discord DMs. Be sure to send him a message beforehand in Casting Call Club’s Private Messaging feature detailing that you’ll be adding him via (Insert Discord ID), so that he knows your friend request isn’t spam. Alex (25) is a reporter for the New Bugle, a news agency in the Commonwealth. Unfortunately, she is a bit of a ditz or an airhead. Additionally, she is easily distracted. However, she will always stick up for the little guy and never backs down. She is also always on the lookout for the next big story, highly optimistic, and eager to be the most reliable reporter out there. She has a light Mandarin accent and is in her mid-20s.

Record all audition lines while referring to the notes below for each line and do one take of each line.

For the first audition line, you are trying to come off as professional and composed but honestly, the fact that you are actually interviewing someone from the old world is so career changing and unique that it's hard to contain your excitement and nervousness.

For the second audition line, you are absolutely gushing over the sole survivor and the massive positive impact he's made in the Commonwealth. You really want him to know how honored you feel to be able to interview him and how much you admire his accomplishments. Unfortunately, you are going highly off track with the interview and there are still a few more questions left.

For the third audition line, you are highly frustrated about how barbarous the world still is despite the efforts of people like the sole survivor and yourself. You were just told of an atrocity that the sole survivor encountered in his travels which particularly stood out to him due to how heinous it was. To know such a crime could still be committed, angers you to your very bones. You hope the perpetrators meet justice soon so the victims can have their retribution.

  • Ni Hao. I'm a reporter for the New Bugle newspaper. I was wondering if you had a minute to answer a few questions.

  • You've done so much, Boston is turning into a, err,... 大城市? uhm, Big City. Diamond City doesn't seem all that big anymore.

  • 真是的! What's wrong with people these days? (heavy sigh)

Role assigned to: caitlinva

April Li (25), a former member of the infamous Commonwealth Insitute, is a dog breeder, one of the few left in the Commonwealth. Like most breeders in the wasteland, she’s focused less on the breed of dog and more on if they’re healthy and able to take the wastes side-by-side with whoever chooses to own one of her animals. April may not love the world that she lives in or the people in it, but she does love her dogs. She also avoids discussion of her past as she is suffering from PTSD from what happened back then. She states that she is the only Li left; the last of a bloodline of brilliant scientists. She finds solace in her dogs. She is in her mid-20s.

For the first audition line, you are highly nervous as you haven't tried reaching out to someone for the longest time but judging by all the good things you've heard about the Sole Survivor, you feel the risk being taken is necessary. You really hope he/she understands what you're saying.

For the second audition line, just the mere mention of your family name is causing a wave of memories to appear in your mind. You are trying to come across as straight forward and composed as possible but it's hard to contain the sadness found in your past.

  • Yes, hello?  You don't know me, but I've heard about you, and um, this. My name is April Li, last of the Cambridge Li's.  I... um... I breed dogs.

  • I'm April Li, of the Cambridge Li's.  Well, last of them, anyway.

Archibald (57) grew up to the west, but after an early life he wants to leave behind, he wandered to the Commonwealth and mostly stuck around. He realized he could make a fair amount of caps making "junk art" from the otherwise useless scrap nobody wants that he scavenges for, which he's done with some success for the last few decades. Archibald is a scavenger who is beginning to suffer dementia but doesn’t want to admit it to himself or his friends. His voice is a bit warm, with a slight Bob Ross/Mister Rogers quality. He is exactly what he seems-- a decent person despite the horrors of the Wasteland.

For the first audition line, you are happy to meet another potential customer and want them to know all about your services and how great they are. You hope that they take a liking to the art you produce and become a valued customer.

For the second audition line, you want them to be as interested as you are towards the possibility of working together. Also, as an artist, you have deep admiration for how much of an explorer the sole survivor is.

  • My goodness! Forgive me. I'm Archibald, this is Treadwell. We sell the best junk sculptures in the Commonwealth!

  • There you are! I hear you find your way to the Commonwealth's more... interesting places. I have a proposal that will coincide with your travels.

An artist to the core, Benni Strong (24) is someone who looks for a way to find expression out of the darkest of times and places. She also enjoys collecting pre-war art, wearing the brightest clothes in the wasteland, maintaining an extremely upbeat mood, and casually using chems to expand her creativity.

For the first audition line, you are super excited to meet another person you can potentially have as an ally. You really hope they are willing to work with you. It's always exciting to meet new people.

For the second audition line, you are trying to find the silver lining in this minor disappointment. You've witnessed far greater letdowns so this won't faze you.

  • Hey! Hey, you! You look like you can handle yourself in the wasteland. You for hire?

  • Hey, this brush is...kinda chewed up? I guess that's okay, adds character and all that jazz.

Carl Meade (56) is a former resident of Vault 81. He worked on the vault’s maintenance crew for almost forty years and was one of the best jury-riggers and fix-it guys the vault had. When Overseer Baht opened the vault in 2277, Carl insisted on venturing out into the Commonwealth to look for parts. He was successful and became a full-time scrounger until Gwen McNamara took over as overseer. He had strong personal differences with McNamara and chose to leave the vault for good. He is now the repair/fix it guy for his current community. He has a grizzled voice.

For the first audition line, although your one of the most experienced engineers in the whole Commonwealth and have worked with pre-war technology that even the Brotherhood of Steel would find fascinating, what the lone survivor has accomplished with his/her settlements truly impresses you. You're truly interested in collaborating and getting to know him/her better.

For the second audition line, you are voicing your most fundamental desire in life. You've seen a lot of truly horrible things in your time in the wastes so its great to have some positive news for once.

  • Hi, name's Carl Meade. Heard you was building up some industry 'round here... Looks like it's true.

  • It's great to see people rebuilding civilization. There's a real sense of hope.

He was born in Rivet City and always had an interest in old world technology and books. Although he's quite physically imposing, he has a gentle, somewhat nerdy nature. He loves comic books with Grognak and Silver Shroud being his favorites. He has a deep, mellow voice. His tone is friendly, sometimes bombastic. For the second audition line, you are fondly recalling all the wondrous things you've read about Boston and are happy to share such information once again! You also can't help but imagine what it would be like for Boston to return to the way it once was in the far past.

  • And you'd be the one everyone's talking about.  Name's Charles. I'm with the Brotherhood. I mean, if the uniform didn't give that away already.

  • Schematics, programming manuals, robotics manuals, things of that nature.  Boston was a hub of technology, we need to gather what we can.

Cleff (43) is a traveling jazzman and spy who’s been on the wrong side of a few scrapes. Despite his rough and physically strong looks, he has a gentle air about him and good humor. Even after seeing the worst of the wasteland, even after having dangerously close run-ins with the Institute, even after working for three decades with no sign of achieving his goal of finding his father, he remains an idealist, seeing the best in everyone including his enemies. He sees more than he talks about. He speaks in a smooth, level tone, with a slight gravelly edge. He generally sounds like someone right out from the 1920s.

For the first audition line, you want to come off as very friendly and welcoming. You hope you can get along with this person rather well. You truly believe that there are still opportunities for trust to exist despite how harsh the wasteland can be.

For the second audition line, your not happy about the way things have been conducted around the sole survivor's settlement, but you also don't want to be a pessimist. You want to be as polite as possible with your constructive feedback as you don't want the sole survivor to lose hope but rather recognize the issue and still have the energy to turn things around.

  • Well hello! Those are some hard eyes you got there, friend. Must have seen times just as hard. Name's Cleff. Least, that's what they call me when they want a gig, so you can too.

  • I appreciate what yer doin' here. I just wish you were doin' a little more of it.

Nadine (35) was originally a member of the NCR military but after losing her hearing in a Legion ambush, she was discharged. Despite being considered by her superiors as unfit for combat, she personally felt that she wasn't done with fighting and upholding the cause of the NCR and so she went East in search of a new cause to join and accept her skills. She ended up joining the Minutemen and protects the innocent despite struggling with her hearing loss. She ultimately hopes to bring a form of stable government to the Commonwealth. She often speaks too loudly as she is unable to effectively gauge the volume of her own voice. She is generally upbeat when she speaks, often sounding enthusiastic and positive. Moreover, she has a faint southwestern accent (Texas/Oklahoma/Nevada) that comes through at the endings of the words she speaks. She is highly efficient and organized in combat and logistics but still relies upon others as her hearing is limited and she doesn't know any sign language or lip reading.

When she talks to people, she has no real way of knowing what the other person is saying, so she assumes. Of course, she always assumes in her own favor. So, when she asks someone for help, she will assume the other person says yes. She purposefully projects a cheerful naivety, hoping that people will feel the need to watch out for her and help her out and consequently her entire demeanor is a carefully balanced act between confidence and helplessness.

Record all audition lines while referring to the notes below for each line and do one take of each line.

For the first audition line, you feel incredibly happy to meet another combat veteran like yourself. You truly admire those who put themselves in harm's way to protect the innocent and fight for justice. You really hope to get to know more about the lone survivor's past combat experience and perhaps trade some tips or work together.

For the second audition line, you want to prove to the lone survivor that you aren't some damsel in distress and there's more to you than meets the eye. You want to be intimidating while still maintaining composure. You've faced tougher looking opponents than him/her so it doesn't stress you out one bit, talking to the lone survivor in this manner.

  • Look at all those impact marks. You must have been in a hundred battles! Or… more?

  • There's lots you wouldn't guess by looking at me - like how dangerous I can be.

Ed (40) loves to tinker with mechanical old world tech. He keeps the lights on and the generators powered, though he has little interest in computers or the like. He also aims to please people and is conflict-averse. Ed grew up in a Red Rocket station with a sign missing the first R and the last T - hence his name. Raised communally, he has a mutt named RT who he jokes "completes me." A few years back synths overran and killed his (gas station-sized) community; only he and RT survived. He still refuses to talk about the specifics of the attack. Ed most of all wants to find a good home for himself and RT. Most of all, he wants to be able to see the positive side of things, despite all the bad that has happened. He misses his family desperately but tries to focus on the happy times he had with them. If the Great War hadn’t happened, he’d be the guy who buys an old car from the junkyard, restores it for fun, then pulls it all apart and teaches his kids how to put it back together.

Record all audition lines while referring to the notes below for each line and do one take of each line.

For the first audition line, you are just casually introducing yourself. A smile crosses your face as you recall fond memories from the past. You've told your backstory so many times that you tend to give quite a condensed and compact version these days.

For the second audition line, just the mere mention of that horrible day is bringing back a tidal wave of memories. It is absolutely too much to bare and so you rather not delve too much into the matter. You try to appear composed and relaxed but it is obvious you are hiding the deep emotional pain you have experienced.

  • Nothing special. I was raised at Red Rocket 1063, at the edge of the Commonwealth. Learned to read from the employee manual!

  • RT looks out for me, too. He's the only reason I escaped 1063 when... Doesn't matter, we made it out. That's what counts, right?

An old raider (50), but still a raider. He’s not reformed, and sees everything as a threat or a potential score. He's highly street smart. He’s only retiring because age is catching up to him, and he doesn’t want to go through the hell of rebuilding another gang. In other words, he’s not atoning for his life of bloodshed. For voice, he should be gruff, similar to the other raiders in game, but more experienced. He’s spent his entire life brutally and effectively leading bands of undereducated castoffs, so he’s very direct and overbearing so as not to be misunderstood. To him, more words just complicate things. Except for things that truly make him angry, such as being lied to, most of his anger is manufactured to serve him as a fearsome leader. He does not like using diplomacy to solve problems.
