Backlights Studios Genshin and Honkai Star Rail Comic Dubs - Round 2

Hello, everyone! We are Backlights Studios, a fandub studio dedicated to dubbing over fancontent of Genshin Impact and Honkai Star Rail. You can find our Youtube channel, along with several comics we have already dubbed in the featured video!

While this is a long-term commitment, it will be fairly casual and chill. However, we still expect clear communication and professional behavior from team members. This project is unpaid and just for fun.

You may audition for, and be casted as, multiple characters! The limit is 2-3 roles per game, depending entirely on how much content the characters you are cast as have. Note that the directors reserve the right to self-cast for a role if we feel we can portray the character well, BUT we are not exempt from the role limit! With that said, Firefly is not on this casting call because we are confident that one of the directors is well-suited to voice her.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT DO IMPRESSIONS OF THE OFFICIAL VOICE CAST! While you may use the official voice of a character as inspiration, we strongly encourage auditioners to give their own takes on a character's voice (I don't want people doing impressions of the references I provide either, for the record). For certain characters we may provide more detailed direction/voice references from other games, but following that direction is not mandatory!

Guidelines

  • If you are cast, please be communicative and professional. While this is a casual series, we will not tolerate ghosting the project for an extended period of time without explanation. If you do so repeatedly, you will be recast.

  • You must be 15+ years old. The directors are not comfortable working with anyone under that age. It should also be noted that due to this age specification, there may be minors present in the Backlights Discord. If you are cast, please behave professionally for everyone's sake.

  • We may dub comics/memes with shipping or cursing. In the case of shipping, we will ask the VAs involved if they are comfortable dubbing the content. We will NOT, however, be doing any comics or memes that contain suggestive or NSFW content.

  • Please have clear audio. You do not need a professional-level setup/microphone but we just need to be able to clearly understand what you say.

  • Please include your Discord handle with your audition.

  • I will not tolerate any AI voice auditions. Backlights Studios does not support the usage of generative AI.

  • The Sunday Update

    We have a small update to make regarding one of the characters on the casting call.

    Due to Sunday having heavy biblical inspiration and imagery, comics and memes with him may allude to or directly reference biblical themes as well. We may change some of these references to the fictional gods from HSR (ie. changing a reference to the Christian God to mention Xipe the Harmony instead), but regardless, if you are not comfortable with having to potentially read lines with references to Christianity, please do not audition for Sunday (and if you have already submitted an audition, feel free to retract it).

She is always busy handling unrest across Mondstadt and tirelessly working to maintain the City of Freedom.

[Faruzan] is a renowned professor of the Sumeru Akademiya and member of the Haravatat Darshan. She recently returned to the Akademiya after solving a puzzle and escaping the ruins that trapped her a century ago. 


Voice direction: either something similar to (but not the same as) the direction used for her English voice - aka. a medium-high to high pitched sassy fem voice, or go full on old lady. Either one works! I'm not picky. If you choose the former, though, please turn the sassiness up to 11.

Although she is a descendant of the infamous and tyrannical Lawrence Clan, Eula severed her ties with the clan and became the captain of the Reconnaissance Company with the Knights of Favonius. 

Despite claiming to want "vengeance" on the Knights on behalf of her family, Eula is viewed as a traitor by them and is seemingly an outcast no matter where she goes.

The daughter of an unnamed exorcist couple, Shenhe was taken in and raised by Cloud Retainer as a disciple following a traumatic incident instigated by Shenhe's father during her childhood. 

She has extremely strong violent urges, forcing the adepti to bind her soul with red ropes to keep her in check. As a result, her personality comes off as very distant and aloof.


Voice direction: low, husky/raspy fem voice. For a potential voice reference, see Cantabile from Arknights. Don't copy the reference though, I encourage an original interpretation!

As the Yuheng of the Liyue Qixing, [Keqing] is someone who seeks her own answers instead of idly letting chaos run amok in Liyue. She chooses her own path with her own power and ability, instead of letting the gods determine her fate.

Also known by her birth name of Guinevere, Guinaifen is an outworlder who ended up residing on the Xianzhou by accident. She is now a passionate and vivacious street performer, and has mastered many Xianzhou acrobatics such as "fire-breathing, sword-swallowing, bowl-balancing, umbrella-dancing, neck-pulling, and boulder-smashing," among others. 

She is also a streamer who posts her antics online for the world to see.


Voice direction: a cheery, medium-high pitched fem voice! I'm imagining something similar to Yoimiya (energetic/excitable, with a bit of tomboyish rasp. Fiery and strong), but higher pitched. No impressions of either Gui or Yoimiya, please!

Lesser Lord Kusanali, also known as Nahida, is the current Dendro Archon and the God of Wisdom. After being released from the Sanctuary of Surasthana, she is eager to see the world and to walk amongst the people of Sumeru.


Vocal direction: a light fem voice like that of a very young child. Sweet and earnest, and idealistic. Nahida may be Teyvat's God of Wisdom, but she is still relatively inexperienced compared to the other Archons. No impressions, please!

An independent designer hailing from Inazuma who strives to make her brand internationally recognized across all of Teyvat, Chiori is the owner of Chioriya Boutique, a fashion label in Fontaine. 

She is known in Fontaine as the "Thundering Seamstress" due to her fierce independent streak and sharp tongue. Chiori is a woman who has little patience for others, especially annoying customers.


Voice direction: snappy, no-nonsense medium pitched fem voice. Be sassy and blunt! But also, she's genuinely passionate about fashion and designing clothes, so make sure you can portray moments where her shell starts to crack.

Sigewinne is the head nurse of the Fortress of Meropide's infirmary. She is a Melusine, though she bears a closer resemblance to a human than most. She has a kind and caring personality, though she can be a bit overbearing to her patients at times.

Despite her unassuming appearance, Sigewinne has a cunning streak and is very sharp, often playing dumb to gain her patients' trust. 


Voice direction: high pitched/young fem voice like that of a young child. Sound a bit more "gremlin"; sweet and bubbly, and with a springy excitable feel!

No impressions, please! I think her official English voice sounds a bit too old.

Known as "Jade of Credit," Jade is a member of the IPC's Ten Stonehearts.


A cold and elegant moneylender, she is skilled at understanding the human heart, with a personal hobby called "Bonajade Exchange." She's willing to wait patiently for high-value acquisitions and adept at extracting value from seemingly destitute clients.


Voice direction: low, throaty fem voice. Full and flowing. She should sound alluring, but not in the stereotypical anime "ara ara" voice if that makes sense. If you are to use any of Jade's voices as a reference, I would highly recommend her JP voice (not really a fan of her EN voice)! But don't try to voice match please!

Voice direction: low fem voice. Stern, refined, and a little haughty. She has a unique speech pattern using the pronoun "One." Think overbearing auntie energy.

A drifter claiming to be a Galaxy Ranger. Her true name is unknown, and she walks the cosmos alone, carrying with her a long sword.Though aloof and taciturn, her blade flicks out like lashing lightning. And yet, she always strikes with her scabbard, never drawing the sword free.

In truth, she is a Self-Annihilator and an Emanator of IX the Nihility. Acheron is one who walked into the shadow of the Aeon and survived, albeit stained permanently by Nihility's influence. Ordinarily she has extremely poor memory due to her memories and some of her powers being sealed inside her sword.


Voice direction: very deep, scratchy and imposing fem voice. Normally she sounds cold/aloof and bitter, but there is a sweet kindness to her when she's around people she cares about.

Please don't do an impression of Allegra Clark, but the direction she took with the character is fantastic!

Xingqiu is the second son of the Guild Manager of the Feiyun Commerce Guild, an influential group in Liyue, and is also a self-proclaimed practitioner of the Guhua Clan's arts. Also an avid reader, Xingqiu aims to be the embodiment of chivalry like the heroes from the books he reads; however, this belies his knack for mischief.


Voice direction: I don't particularly like Christina Vee's take on the character, especially takes from early patches of Genshin (later voicelines like the one for GaMing more fit my vision)-I think Xingqiu should sound more boyish/raspy. So a high pitched masc voice, light and well-balanced, would be perfect. However if you have a fem voice and are able to do a young boy's voice as well, then you are still welcome to try for him!

Columbina, also known as the Dove, is the Third of the Fatui Harbingers. A serene yet eerie figure, little is known about Columbina even by most of her fellow Fatuus. Those who do know her well tend to view her as unsettling and incomprehensible. 

She has a sweet demeanor but a sharp tongue.


Due to Columbina not having a strong story presence thus far, two of her lines here are completely original.

Despite his kindly outward demeanor, Sunday's true personality is distrustful and controlling, seemingly at odds with his position as a follower of the Harmony. 


Voice direction: Medium pitched masc voice. His voice should be smooth and have a warmness to it, while also having a commanding sort of quality that captures people's attention.

You can also go lower, I don't mind. I love his CN voice as well as Griffin Puatu's performance in EN, but I do not want to hear an impression of either!

One of the seven Arbiter-Generals of the Xianzhou Alliance's Cloud Knights, and one of the Six Charioteers of the Xianzhou Luofu. Although he appears lazy, Jing Yuan has been a general on the Luofu for centuries, an amount of time exceeding most of his peers. This can be attributed to his wisdom and attention to routine measures, with Jing Yuan preferring to be preventive rather than corrective. 


Voice direction: a soft, deep masc voice, with a fatherly feel. Slow and relaxed, and a little husky. Please don't do an impression, but Alejandro Saab does a wonderful job as Jing Yuan's official English VA! So something with a similar feel would be great.

Despite being a rather foul-mouthed person, Boothill is unable to use normal swear words due to someone messing with his speech box. Thus, most of his swears are rendered as watered down versions or "cutie"/"darling."

Once a disgraced student expelled from Sumeru Akademiya, Il Dottore is the Second of the Fatui Harbingers. Dottore is both feared and reviled throughout Teyvat due to his brutal human experiments and callous demeanor. Everything Dottore does is just another experiment to him, even acts that directly aid in his goal to create a god that can challenge Celestia, or to augment humanity to bring them up to the level of gods.

One of Dottore's personal experiments includes creating "segments," or clones of himself at different ages. One of these younger segments appears in the official Genshin manga and has a fiery, maniacal personality.


Voice direction: The voice of Dottore's main segment should be very low masc, with a rasp. Cold, calculating, and more than a hint of menace. My personal favorite version of Dottore's voice is the CN version, but I encourage original interpretations. 

Also be aware that his manga self may appear in comics/memes. Thus, we encourage you to do multiple takes of the audition lines in different voices.

The (male) main character of Honkai Star Rail. They awakened in Herta Space Station with no memories of their past self after being implanted with a Stellaron by Kafka. NOTE: If you are cast as Caelus you may not be cast as any other HSR character due to the amount of fancomics that Caelus is in! You can still audition for other HSR characters, however.


Voice direction: You'll need to be able to portray a wide range of emotions for this role. I personally think Caelus might benefit from a lower, grittier voice compared to his official English voice. But he should still sound young and "anime-protagonisty."
