NYC in Video Games: 1986-1993-Narrator for Pitch Video
Project Overview
For the inaugural exhibition, inspired by the film documentary Los Angeles Plays Itself by Thom Anderson which examines the relationships between various films and the city of LA. NYC in Video Games 86-93 takes a look at the unique relationship the city has with video games. Games such as Streets of Rage and Final Fight still have a large presence in popular culture to this day. It will also examine the present-day gaming community including a thriving indie developer scene and E-Sports.
This period also marks the end of the golden age of American arcades giving rise to the home console wars of the 90s. The beat’em up genre all but died as well during this time aside from a few titles which are notably not set in NYC. Simultaneously New York was changing as well with the Times Square revitalization that had started taking effect in the early 90s.
The exhibition will both showcase advertisement art and merchandise from select video games. Along with a mix of photography and news articles of what was going on in New York at the time to show how early video game development and NYC history are intertwined.
In the wake of the pandemic and the current housing crisis, crime statistics have been consistently cited from this period of the city's history. Can we learn anything about yesterday and today by looking at New York through the lens of the video game medium during this era?

In this role you will narrate over various types of footage talking about the history of New York City and video games from that particular era for 3-5 minutes. This is for a pitch video for a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for an exhibition featuring merchandise, photography and documentation.
