Project Overview
On the eve of his tenth birthday, Rakuo Kumode undergoes his family’s “initiation rite.” When he bucks against his family traditions, he has an encounter that will change the course of his life forever…in good and bad ways.
(For those in the know, Kanau is meant to draw on the “yandere” trope: a person who is “dangerously” obsessed with their love interest, oftentimes to the point of violence.)
THE GAMEKanau is a horror/supernatural visual novel with romance and thriller elements. It will be a kinetic (a linear story without choices) game consisting of 11.5k words. It will be released on itch and later on Steam. It is the prequel/follow-up to Karamu, a horror/romance title that I released in June last year. (You can check out Karamu here. It was fully voice acted as well!)
THE TEAMI am a solo developer, so I do just about everything for my projects (character/background art, animation, programming, and writing) except for music/SFX. Kanau is my fourth publicly released project, and my second project working with VAs. You can check out my other work here.
CONTENT WARNINGSThis game revolves around child abuse (this includes physical, verbal, and emotional abuse), though I intend to treat the topic with sensitivity. There is also gore and violence, described in text and depicted graphically.
COMPENSATIONPayment will be handled via Paypal in US Dollars. Transaction fees will be covered on top of the rates listed below. Payment will occur upon delivery and approval of audio files.
All VAs will be paid $1.50 per line, with a $25 minimum. As this project is noncommercial, this rate is not negotiable.
AUDITIONSAll communications will be conducted through Discord and/or Email.
Requirements:
Only audition if you are 18+.
Good audio quality with no noticeable room reverb or background noise.
Audition Specifications:
Record 1-3 takes of each line in ABCABC format. Include all the takes in one file. Don’t include too many seconds of silence before each line.
Please do not edit your audition other than basic cuts/leveling. No processing/compression.
Please name your recordings as CharacterName_YourCreditedName.
TIMELINEFebruary 11th, 2024 11:59PM HST: Deadline for auditions. Auditions submitted after this time will not be considered.
Mid February: Deliberation period. Successful applicants will be contacted by February 16th, and they will receive a script immediately. Unsuccessful applicants will not be contacted (thank you for your understanding)!
February 16th-March 1st: Recording period (2 weeks).
March 1st-March 4th: Retakes, if required.
March 9th: Game release.

ADDITIONAL NOTE FOR THE ROLE OF TAKAKO: I plan on releasing a third game in this series around June. Please only audition for the role of Takako if you are willing to reprise your role in that game and will be available to record in the April/May timeframe. (The script is still in progress, but I will ask for at least 30 lines, and I will pay you the same rate as this project.)
