Hunters Wake

Project Overview

Project Title: The Hunters Wake

Platform: Youtube, possibly Spotify

Format: Audio Drama

Genre(s): Gothic Horror, Urban Fantasy

Series Synopsis: Forces both mundane and supernatural exert constant pressure on a population largely unaware of the war waging around them. Creatures of myth and legend rule the night through fragile alliances, stalking the edges and outskirts of familiar places, and testing the thinning barrier between our world and the other. But there are those among mortalkind who reject the spot chosen for them at the bottom of the food chain. From small-town teens to ex-cons and holy warriors, through warm West Coast nights and down the haunted rural roads of the Southeast, the hunters wake.

An outwardly chaotic vampire. Crude, impulsive, and often the first to act, he masks discomfort with humor and bravado. Despite his rough edges, he is perceptive in his own way and deeply loyal to his brood. He is also a merciless bruiser. If you're thinking of a vampire who jumps from building to building chasing an enemy, or jumping down into an alley to pulverize them, you're thinking of Ratchet.

Vocal Performance Notes: Energetic, rough-around-the-edges. Capable of low and threatening or high and berserk.

A newly taken, low-level vampire. Crude, volatile and thoroughly unimpressed with anyone, Lash leans hard into what he has become in death: a predator with a bad attitude and very little patience. He is not refined, not ancient and not particularly noble, which results in soaring victories and crushing defeats alike. This guy really goes through it for the first few episodes, captured and interrogated none-too-gently. So this role would probably be best for someone who's not afraid to get loud.

A member of Laurence's brood and an accomplished practitioner of the ancient vampiric art of being an asshole. Snide and perpetually ready with an insult, Spoony will happily kick Lash while he's down, puncture somebody else's dramatic story with a two-word joke, or keep antagonizing another brood when everyone is supposed to be dealing with a supernatural emergency. His bravado becomes a little less certain when he's confronted with something genuinely outside his experience. He is quick, casual and obnoxiously funny. Spoony's humor should feel effortless rather than like he's waiting for a punchline. He's a vampire but a thoroughly modern one. Nothing about him needs to sound ancient or gothic. And under all of that cheek, there is enough self-preservation for the unknown to genuinely unsettle him.

Another member of Laurence's brood. Self-assured, curious and somewhat swaggering, Florentine has spent decades knowing himself to be stronger, faster and harder to kill than the mortals around him, leaving him genuinely fascinated by stories of humans successfully hunting vampires. When confronted with something frightening and unfamiliar, his instinct is to square his shoulders and press on. His demeanor is confident and conversational, but short of being a meathead. Florentine asks sincere questions and thinks about the answers. He also has a reassuring streak beneath the bravado, as when a companion loses his nerve, Florentine's response is essentially to remind him what they are and continue on.

  • (Chirping from in front of the net.) Leave your guy in, it's not gonna matter!

  • (Three vocalizations: one taking a speeding puck directly to the chest and stopping it, one triumphant grunt as he falls on it and stops it going in, one grunt of surprised frustration as one gets past him.)

A detective with the Del Cielo Police Department investigating a brutal assault. He is calm, methodical and observant, he seems willing to entertain unusual evidence without immediately accepting extraordinary explanations. As the investigation begins producing missing evidence, impossible witness accounts and a strangely cooperative man whose story is truthful without quite making sense, Moon becomes increasingly aware that something about the case is deeply wrong. He knows when to soften his manner with a frightened civilian and when to press a witness who is withholding something. His skepticism is investigative rather than dismissive.

  • (Gently informing a concerned young lady that her missing boss has already been found.) He's alive. He's in critical condition at St. Raphael Medical Center.

  • (Two experienced officers have just insisted that an injured man somehow appeared from thin air in a location they had already searched.) I know you both pretty well. But given what you're saying, I have to ask: Any drinking?

  • (Interviewing a witness in the hospital. Moon believes most of what he's hearing, but has realized part of the truth is being very carefully skirted around.) Silas, I get the distinct feeling you are being honest with me. Mostly. But something just isn't adding up.

What begins as an ordinary missing-person concern changes the moment Alvarez recognizes Rydell's name and realizes the police already know exactly where he is. She is speaking to a worried young woman rather than interrogating a witness, and her manner should reflect that. The important turn comes when she recognizes the name.

  • (An elementary-school skating group has arrived, and it's time to get the hockey players out of the lobby.) Let's clear the lobby guys, looks like Taft Elementary's here for their skateday. Not you, Matt. I need you out near the ice in case the teachers need help.

  • (Reporting to Hecate.) Mistress, a small brood is present in the Main Sanctum. They did not show proper obeisance, thus I have no gift. But their presence persists.

  • (Hecate has instructed him to choose one of the visitors and send them in.) Yes Mistress, the most beautiful one. And if none of them meet your standards?

  • (Speaking to another of his station. Gentle but firm.) Be still now. The Mistress has commanded you to die.

An enthralled mortal servant of someone in the Pale, who appears during a tense gathering following a disastrous event. He arrives with an apparently mundane message that turns out to be a coded summons. Casual and completely unfazed by the hostile reception, he delivers what he came to deliver and leaves the drama to everyone else. Clipped, professional and matter-of-fact. The humor of the scene comes from Danielson behaving as though nothing unusual is happening while walking into a room full of angry vampires.

  • (Her suspicions have escalated into an accusation, and she's demanding answers. She is moving forward as she speaks, and is blocked at the end.) And why the hell not? We got gods-know-what singing all kinds of songs from up there at Vista Del Oro, everybody's looking to you three for answers. • (Explaining Aquinas's understanding of courage.) Courage is not the absence of fear. Aquinas understands courage precisely because there is something genuinely terrible to be endured. What defines courage is the willingness to remain steadfast despite that fear. To refuse to let fear turn us away from what we know is good and what we know is right.

  • (Distinguishing courage from pointless risk-taking.) Fortitude is not recklessness. The courageous man does not seek danger merely to prove that he isn't afraid of it. There is no virtue in throwing your life away for nothing. Prudence still has its place. We don't manufacture crosses for ourselves simply so that we can boast about carrying them.

  • (Explaining endurance as an act of fortitude.) For Aquinas, one of the great acts of fortitude is endurance: remaining firm when suffering cannot simply be struck down or escaped. And why endure? In service to those we love, in service to those who count on us, and ultimately, in service to our Lord who loves us.

A younger sister of one of the main teens. Sora joins the cast for an afternoon at the pool, where a game based very loosely on Magellan's voyage quickly demonstrates that she is much more interested in being silly than respecting either the rules of the game or historical geography. Portrayal should be youthful and mischievous. She is perfectly capable of understanding the game; she's deliberately screwing around with it because that's more fun. She should sound like she's having a wonderful time being with (and sometimes annoying) the older kids.
