Grimsey: A Burtonesque Animated Dark Fantasy (Talented Voice Actors Needed!)

Project Overview

Hello, everybody! I am on the lookout for talented voice actors to perform the character roles in my upcoming animated short film: Grimsey.

STORY:

Grimsey is a dark fantasy animated short film (runtime of around 10-12 minutes) in a Tim Burton-like style. It tells the cautionary tale of a man named Adam, who has passed away and is now a skeleton. He rises out of his grave, unaware that he is dead, and finds a spooky mansion in the distance. There he meets Mr. Grimsey, who has been expecting Adam's arrival. Grimsey reveals to Adam that he is dead, and that he wasted his life seeking personal gain, betraying those around him. Now, Adam must choose a room in the mansion to stay in forever. Adam, still blinded by greed, picks the wrong door, and is sucked into a void. The story ends with Mr. Grimsey awaiting another skeleton to test and see if he will succeed or fail.

The film does not contain any explicit or inappropriate language, or violent scenes. However, it is not a film for very young children, due to its serious themes surrounding death and betrayal.

REQUIREMENTS:

Since this is a paid project that I am funding out of my own pocket: a significant level of technical and performance quality is going to be expected. Please ensure that your microphone is capable of recording your performance without picking up overwhelming background noises or excessive peaking/clipping. The two roles require different types of performances: Mr. Grimsey requires a calm, mysterious, narrator-like voice, and Adam requires a voice that can range from calm to angry, and even screaming in anger in the last scene.

PAYMENT:

If you are cast I will not expect you to do any recording for me until you are appropriately compensated for your time. After castings are complete, I will pay for each role as listed. You will receive a one-time payment for the role you have been casted for in this project.

Payments will be sent exclusively through PayPal only- if you do not have a PayPal account do not expect to be paid as part of this project.

DEADLINE:

Auditions will close on October 18th, 2020.

RELEASE:

I am looking to release the film on October 31st. If for whatever reason the film cannot be finished in time, I will extend the release to mid-November. The short film will be uploaded to my YouTube channel, and the names of each voice actor will be listed in the opening and closing credits.

    I was blown away when I heard all of these auditions; I am touched to see so much passion for this project. The hardest part of this process for me was choosing only two out of the 100+ auditions. All of you did wonderfully: I loved hearing your takes on the characters, it was incredibly surreal to hear them be brought to life. Having finished up all of the voice work, I am determined to make this film the best it can be. I can't wait to see it when it's all finished up. Mr. Grimsey is a tall, mysterious figure. He has very much a bass voice and a clean, narrator-like way of speaking. For comparison, I am looking for a tone, accent, and way of speaking very similar to that of the Ghost Host from Disney's Haunted Mansion. In the original writing for this story, Adam described Mr. Grimsey like this: "Grimsey spoke slowly and calmly, his voice having a distinctive low tone. He had this subtle, elegant way of speaking that drew me into his conversations, yet he also unsettled me because I could never quite tell what he was thinking. He would often grin as he spoke, creating a strange balance between sinister and welcoming. There was something foreboding about him, yet mesmerizingly calming at the same time." Mr. Grimsey knows a lot that Adam, and the audience, don’t know. The occurrences that we see are strange to us, but are completely normal to him, and he seems to take a macabre delight in watching his guests slowly learn the horrific truth. He is polite and charming, but we are never sure if he is good or bad.

  • Welcome. My name is Mr. Grimsey. We’ve been expecting you.

  • You’re a persistent man, Adam. A man with many questions, and understandably so. This experience is entirely new to you, and you want an explanation. And now that you see this unfortunate predicament that you are in, I shall elaborate. You have no recollection of who you were, do you?

  • But beneath the façade of an upstanding husband and father was a hot-headed, selfish man. Your pride, though it started as a small seed, grew into a vicious weed that devoured you. You became dissatisfied with your life. Your lust for money overtook you. You ran after it, putting it above those that you loved.

Adam is a young man, probably around his late 20s/early 30s, who is prideful, hot-headed, and impatient. He is frustrated and confused in this story, unaware for a while that he is actually dead. When he is met with his fate, he feels cheated (even though he himself chose his own fate), and is wroth with anger. Adam requires an actor who can both speak calmly and raise his voice effectively, even screaming in the last scene.


  • (Skeptical) You're expecting me? How on earth did you know my name?

  • What the devil is going on here? Is this some nightmare that I need to wake from? (speaking to himself) No...no. this can't be real! I’m still dreaming, this is all just a dream! (to Mr. Grimsey) I want answers Grimsey! What's happened to me!?

  • (Screaming as he flies through a void inside a magical door) Grimsey! Help me! Aagh! Curse you!!
