The Purgatorians Urgent Recasting Call 3

Project Overview

Before I give you a synopsis of the show, I just want to speak of the preview video and a plea. This video is taken from the rough drafts and is to give you a look at how the retakes process works, as well as giving you a look to see if this is something you would feel comfortable acting in. I'm not making it a NSFW call as there is no sex or nudity in this show, and I don't want to get lumped in with that.

Now, a plea. We first put up a casting call for this project two years ago. Since then, we have not completed one episode. Most of the cast we have are great, but we have been plagued with unproffessional voice actors who ghosted us. Not for days. Not for weeks. Not for a month. Most of these ghosted us for three or fours months before I had to fire them. Some left the project without telling us. Please, make sure you are serious about being a VA before auditioning. We honestly can't afford to keep hiring people who go silent. Two years of nothing but rough drafts is far too long.

You will be asked to sign an AI Rider/NDA before scripts are sent to you. Payments are made through PayPal. However, if you're from the UK, I am also open to doing bank transfer should you wish to. Only UK cast as I can't afford too many overseas charges. Credited names must be real or a real sounding alias. I am trying to make the show look as professional as possible, so no Voiceactor21932, BernardGrimesVA or anything like that please. The VA can just be taken off from the end though.

The Purgatorians is an Isekai, which I had never heard of until a cast member told me, in which people arrive in this world from our own world. They have no idea how they got here, or why they are here. Once all the help from the rulers have been proven to be lies, they submit to their fate and settle down here. The one thing they don't know is that every 15 years, the cycle will come to an end. There's a 99% chance they may not survive this.

Between the start and end of the cycle, The Liberator is claiming souls in order to take the land by force. Sending his trusty right hand man to do the claiming, or the killing, getting them in the old asylum and forcing them to go through retraining, or torture depending on how you look at it, until they submit. Once submitted, they become one of The Liberators army. If they don't submit, they risk becoming fodder for The Purgatorians and become feral.

A look at what retraining actually is, and to hear the main antagonists, in the video below. Once again, viewer discretion advised.

https://youtu.be/YlyGcBRI2m0

Meanwhile, in the city. The so called leader of Serenity is fighting a lost cause as the council members keep forcing him to do their bidding by always making sure the votes fall in their favour. The leader is a man who wants the best for his citizens. The other council members prefer to rule in fear. The problem is that one of them knows some of the leaders closely held secrets that he can't afford to allow the citizens to find out. This could ruin him. However, one of the council members know these truths. She can and will hold these against him to make sure he does exactly what she demands.

The Purgatorians is a dramatic thriller audio drama with horror and fantasy elements. It does contain some scenes that some people may find offensive or distressing. The prequel is more condensed, 5 episodes, so things move faster. The main show is 5 seasons of 52 episodes each. This moves a lot slower so character development can take place and storylines set up so they aren't rushed. It can be seen as more of a soap opera/serial drama with horror elements added in.

At the moment, we have over 50 cast members set over the main show and the prequel. Crew are on standby to create original music for the show, as well as an audio engineer to make it sound the best it can. Unfortunately, due to the ghosting problems we have had since day 1, the crew hasn't had anything to do yet. Many more characters will come and go over the course of the show, so we will always be looking out for new talent.

I can't add the proper pay rates to the call as CCC doesn't allow me to. Here they are.

Main cast - At the moment, this is set to £20 per episode. If the show does well enough to allow me to do so, all previous episodes will be back paid to £2 per line. All future episodes will then be paid at £2 per line and increase to a maximum of £5 per line as and when the show allows me to do so.

If any extra lines are added, these are paid at an extra £2 per line regardless. I don't believe the cast members should be punished for my mistakes.

For extras - These start out at £2 per line, just so I don't get confused if I can pay back pay. The extras will have already been paid this so will recieve no back pay. Mostly, there will only be possibly 5-10 lines for extras. However, at times there may be slightly more. This will always be £2 per line regardless.

I will add the first three concept teasers here. All of these are taken from the rough drafts, and the first two will give you some context to what takes place in the preview video.

https://youtu.be/qUIK66DJ_kc - Concept teaser 3

Please take note that Elena is in the show for quite a while. She is prominent in the prequel. Takes a slight back seat in the early stages of the main show, although still in many episodes. Then becomes more prominent later down the line. To avoid any confusion, the Elena you hear in the teasers is the one who is no longer with us. This is the role you will be taking. I did like her voice and tones for the maunipulative and/or calm parts though, so please try not to stray too far from this as that is how Elena is meant to sound.

AI will never be used at all in any episode of The Purgatorians, but I need to make a full admission to be transparant with you all. When the show first began prodution, I needed a placeholder image until I could afford to pay an artist for an actual image as all of my money was going on paying the cast for their lines.. Two years ago, someone came to me with one and I accepted it. I had no idea how bad and unethical AI was back then. As people started to see it, they started educating me on how wrong it was. I then put lines from the cast on hold for a month so I could pay for an artist to draw a proper one for us. The placeholder was discarded immediately, swapped out with the logo of the show alone, and replaced.

To try to make sure no AI was used in any creation, I do ask anyone that creates music or artwork for the show to send me a signed written declaration saying this was their own work and AI wasn't used to create it. The cast declare this when signing the AI Rider/NDA.

I fully admit this to you as most of the cast interviews, which were recorded in the early days, still has the placeholder image. The image you see in the preview, as the scenes change, is the replacement that shall be used. I have learnt from the mistake I made 2 years ago, and I honestly vow to never use this again now I understand the wrongs of AI. I have made plenty of anti AI posts on Twitter/X, but I never try to hide that I made the mistake in the first place.

Any questions. Please let me know. If you don't want feedback, please let me know when uploading your audition.

Latest Updates

  • Project deadline extended and an increase to Elenas initial pay for fairness

Hello everyone. I'm so sorry for being silent.

Firstly, I was changing broadband providers to upgrade to 1000mbps from 150mbps. The then current provider cut the broadband off 4 days early and wouldn't reinstate it until the now current provider took over the service. This left me with no broadband for a short time until the new service began.

Since changing over, the broadband has been quite spotty, with frequent disconnects and very low speed drops. I was told to wait 10 days for it to settle and we are closing in on that now, so hopefully it stays stable.

Due to the silence, I have extended the deadline until July 13th at midnight, UK time (BST). This means you will have until the end of Sunday July 12th to submit your auditions.

Finally, out of fairness to the person who is cast as Elena needing to provide all 5 episodes within a month, I am adding a bonus for a rush job on this payment. It was initially £140. Here are the details.

£100 for all five episodes, which consist of four scripts. Paid at the stated £20 per episode.

2x£20 for the intensive voicing scenes. If a significant amount of a scene or episode requires shouting or screaming, this is paid at double pay. If it's only one or two that's needed, that's set at triple line rates, which will first be £2 per line when starting, so £6 per line if it's intensive. The 2x£20 rates are for episodes 4 and 5 in which shouting is required.

£60 rush job bonus. I can't go over this I'm afraid. Not right now. Normally, it's only one episode per month that is requested. Since time is now urgently running out, all 5 episodes are needed within the month. This is not the person who is cast who is at fault, so they should be compensated for being asked to do multiple scripts at once.

The rate for the whole 5 episodes is now set at £200.

Thank you everyone, and I'm sorry once more. Giving feedback to the auditions will commence very soon.

  • Sorry for the silence

I would like to apologise for the silence. The reason for this is because I ran out of medication and I became ill. I wasn't sleeping much, 3 hours some days due to this.

I much prefer to go through auditions with a clear head to give everyone a fair chance, so i thought it best to wait until it passes. It is starting to clear up now that I have my medication again. Therefore, next week I should be back to listening through your auditions.

My apogies once more. I am still here.

  • Project page has been updated for transparency. Please read it all as it does sound bad to begin with.

AI will never be used at all in any episode of The Purgatorians, but I need to make a full admission to be transparant with you all.

  • The casting call will not be closing early.

Back when I created my very first casting call, I thought I had found the cast I needed and didn't want to waste anyone elses time,. So, I closed that casting call early. I did get a huge backlash for this at the time, which made me realise I made the wrong decision.

Ever since then, I have made sure to keep all the casting calls open until the deadline hits. You have no worries if you want time to prepare an audition, but can't get around to it until closer to the end date. The call shall still be open, as long as the deadline hasn't passed.

  • I've started upvoting if your audition really impresses me.

I have never done this before, so please tell me if you don't like it. I will follow the majority of opinions. This is the first time I have done this.

If your audition really impresses me, I shall now be upvoting your submissions. Even if it doesn't lead to a shortlist, you know you're on the right track.

Good audio, a clear voice, following direction, and clear knowledge of the reference material, to name but a few things, are examples of this. It is a mix of things though, not just one of the named examples. Even if the voice isn't quite right for the role, but I'm still impressed, this can still lead to an upvote.

Once again, if this is mass disliked by people here, moreso than those who like it, I shall stop doing this.

In episode 1, Elena is polite, respectful, kind, and only wants the best for the citizens in the city of Serenity. She is however meek and looked down upon by some of the other council members.

From episode 2 onwards, she is cold hearted and sadistic. She enjoys seeing others suffer, especially if she's causing the suffering. She will order executions for the smallest things, and even frame citizens for crimes they never comitted, just to see their anguish, and maybe the end of their life.

No character in The Purgatorians are one dimensional, and Elena is no different. Moving from polite and friendly to cold and ruthless shows this. She also holds no fear to the antagonist, The Liberator, who everyone fears. In fact, she barks orders at him instead of the other way around.

She has information on the leader of the council and she will blackmail him to do her bidding, until she is ready to claim the leadership of Serenity as her own that is.

If you want to voice a sadistic villain, this role may be for you. She has a prominent role in the prequel miniseries, has a smaller role in the main show, although still there in many episodes, just not as many scenes, then the role grows again when... I can't say due to spoilers!

Please note that this role is no different from any other and may require screams at some points.

Voice needed - Female

Age range - Late 20's to mid 30s

Accent - An elegant British accent preferred, but I will accept American if nobody is suited for the British accent. You can hear the accent I previously went for in the rough draft preview I have added on the casting call page.

You must be able to perform tones of manipulation, anger, friendliness, authoritative, and fear. Among many others.

Pay for this role is set as a flat rate to £20 per episode. If the show does well enough to allow me to do so, back pay will be paid, less money paid, set at £2 per line. If this happens, all future lines will be set at this rate, which may increase to a maximum of £5 per line depending on the shows success. If episodes require intensive voicing, many lines of shouting loudly for example, pay is doubled for that episode at £40. If it's not often, an extra £2 per line is paid on top of the £20. Episode 5, which is script 4, is one of these occasions as you need to shout over the loudness of the storm. The winds and thunder will be strong. As well as a scream at the end of your final scene.

Since all of the ghosting we have been plagued with has put us so far behind, I will be requesting all 5 episodes of the show be submitted by the end of July. The total payment shall be £140 and retakes needed, if any, shall be requested once the rough draft editor has edited the episodes together. Please do not go silent once the lines have been submitted. You will be needed in the main show as well.

Context - This is to give you a little context of the scene to help you with preparing and recording your audition. Please do not submit the context. Only the lines.

Line 1 - Elena is on her way home when she gets ambushed by two other council members. They are threatening her life if she doesn't change her vote on the execution. This is from episode 1, so she has not moved over to her sadistic personallity at this point. She is still meek and vulnerable. She is very scared as the knife is pressed up against her.

Line 2 - Elena is now in her sadistic personality. She is threatening Abraham that she will kill him if she does not relinquish the power of the city and the citizens over to her. Please see concept trailer 3 in the casting call as it includes a part of this line. It was delivered very well and is the performance I'm looking for here.

Line 3 - Elenas plans have been thwarted. She was supposed to be the one who pulled the level on the guillotine, but now she's being arrested for murder. She is very angry that this is happening. No fear that she may be the next head under the blade, only anger that she can't carry out her plans as she is dragged away kicking and screaming by the guards. This line is in the rough draft preview I added to this call. However, it was not delivered at all in the correct way. Please see that to find out what I'm not looking for.

The extras don't have many lines, but they are in every episode, unless they die before the end. You may audiiton with any accent, but I am looking for two female voices between the ages of 25-40.

Please note, the way I give lines to extras are quite different to the rest of the cast. Discord is optional, not mandatory, for anyone except extras. I post the rough draft scenes into the extras channel so you know exactly what you're working with. Lines are sent to you once the rough draft has been completed, not when the other cast get these.

Pay is set to £2 per line for extras. This covers the £2 per line back pay payments to other cast should we meet this, so this is a set rate. No future back pay will be paid. I did set this as a range in the payment section, but for some reason it is saying it is £30 per hour. That is not the case. It is a per line basis.

Context to the lines - Please do not submit this part in your audition. It is merely to help you understand the context of the scene. Please only submit the audition lines. I know this sounds obvious, but I have had someone send me the context in an audiiton before, leaving the lines out completely.

Line 1 - This takes place during the execution scene, as Elena walks onto the stage. She has accidently outed herself as the murderer, which means the people meeting the blade are innocent. The crowd are very angry with her and want to see her meeting the blade instead. This line is a callout from this extras line. She is shouting at Elena, who is trying to start her speech.

Line 2 - This scene takes place during the cycles end near the end of the finale of the prequel. The cycle takes place every 15 years and kills most people in this land. It is an extinction level event that the citizens are completely unaware of. This is the very first time they have witnessed something like this. This person is terrified and has no idea what is going on as she has just witnessed people turn to sand and pour to the floor in front of her eyes. This is not an ordinary event that people witness often here. This is new and extremely terrifying.
