7Smoke Tennis 2018: Red Edition

Project Overview

What is this project?

7Smoke Tennis 2018: Red Edition is one of two products from the 7Smoke Tennis Project 2018, the other being 7Smoke Tennis 2018: Blue Edition. Each Edition is a game mod for one of the entries in a first-person shooter game called Serious Sam. The mods each consist of a custom campaign, ten levels long, but the unique aspect of them lies in the mod's name. Each level is created by an entirely different person - and when one level finishes production, it's up to the next creator in line to make a continuation to that level keeping in mind the story, setting and the gameplay. You may have guessed that this idea has taken direct inspiration from YouTube Tennis videos - where two or more people continuously take each other's product and make some changes to it until it is finished.

7Smoke Tennis as a whole started out in 2015 as a very small project - consisting of just six people. By 2016 we had already made three iterations and our fourth one was just coming out - this time 14 people took part in the levelmaking! However as time went on, it was clear that our idea of quality was going in the wrong direction. When we decided to make a fifth mappack, we were able to remove previous limitations we set on our mappers thanks to upgrades to the game's engine. Now we could prioritize quality over speed. Eventually we announced the 7Smoke Tennis Project 2017, later to be rebranded into 2018, and with 20 volunteer mapmakers wanting to take part, we cut the workload into two groups - from which came forth a Red Edition and a Blue Edition.

Last December, we finished and released the Blue Edition to the Steam Workshop, which was one and a half year in the making. Initial reactions to the campaign was very positive and a large step up from previous iterations of the 7Smoke Tennis project. Beforehand, we also came to this site with a casting call in hand - in order to increase the quality of our mod even further, we opted to drop the subtitle-like text popups we used in our first iterations (we had no budget at all!) in favour of fully-featured voice actors.

What is the story about?

The 7Smoke Tennis 2018: Red Edition is loosely based on the story of the game which the mod is for - Serious Sam. In a not-that-distant future, archealogists discover a warning left behind by a civilization preceding the Ancient Egyptians - that total annihilation by an alien invader would be inevitable if mankind ventured into space.
And yet, mankind encountered no such threat. Somehow, the threat had already been taken care of by a hero from the past. Instead humans became the dominant species in the galaxy and reverse-engineered all kinds of spacefaring equipment to quickly expand their reach beyond Earth. Soon after spacefaring came space warfaring - the Earth Defense Force became the strong military extension of the human galactic domain.

What was left of the supposed alien invaders were scattered monsters wandering their home worlds, looking for battles that were not being fought. A non-profit organisation known as the Redeemers took it upon themselves to give these lost creatures a new purpose - a chance for redemption - under the tutelage of the species they were originally trained to kill. Although the ethics of this were soon called into question - who are we to boss around those who have already given up? As such the Redeemers became one of many prime targets for the EDF to hunt down.

Another such prime target are the Zalgruds. When it was discovered they were giving refuge to the survivors of a species that gave the EDF a hard time, so to speak, they didn't take very kindly to that. However the EDF's solution to this problem was overkill - to a point where the Zalgruds were all but extinct. This controversy sparked a massive debate in humanity's galactic government. And a lone Zalgrud survivor is taking full advantage of this as he prepares for the largest act of revenge in history...

What are the requirements for auditioning?

Requirements are fairly minimal:

  • A microphone of sufficient quality is a must for every character. Try to minimise background noise as much as possible and use any sort of equipment you have (such as pop filters) to mitigate anomalies in your recordings.

  • Do not provide an audition with any sound effects applied! The SFX editing will be left to our team. Cleanup filters like noise gates are fair game.

  • You must be able to be contacted via either Discord or Steam, as our team members are most readily available on these platforms. Once you have been cast, we will immediately DM you here on CCC to ask for your account handle on either of these platforms. If your preference lies in another platform, please let us know beforehand. E-mail correspondence will not be an option.

  • We ask that you deliver your lines within a month of being cast. If you do not believe you can finish your character within this timeframe, you must let us know as soon as possible! We do not wish to delay the release for any reason, so if there is a possible impediment, we can prepare for it.

What sort of payment is there?

All roles with the exception of one are paid. These prices are loosely based on the amount of lines, the importance of the role and the skill we believe is required for the chosen character. If you are cast, you will be paid for your role only after you have recorded and submitted all your lines.
Payment will be done through PayPal. If you do not wish to use PayPal, please let us know at the time of payment. Keep in mind that we may not be able to accommodate for any given alternative.
All prices listed are in US Dollars ($). Please keep conversion rates in mind if you are using a different currency.

Who are you?

I'm here on behalf of the Seven Different Kinds of Smoke community, shorthandedly known as 7Smoke, the group behind the idea for this project. We are, above all else, a community focused on Serious Sam, a first person-shooter series best known for adrenaline-fueled mayhem and headless screams. The game was presumably made in a garage somewhere in Croatia. We've been around since 2012 and we closely follow the work of the developers of the Serious Sam games. We also host weekly events on the Sam games (and other ones too), and occasionally you'll find us hosting a contest or a giveaway. More importantly, we are just a cozy community - we may not be quite the largest around, but the future looks bright for us.
You can learn more about 7Smoke through our website. You will also find links to our most active part of the community here - on Discord!

Is there anything else I should know?

Should you have any questions, please do not hesistate to drop me an private message here on Casting Call Club.

As you may notice, the amount of lines for many of the characters are not entirely final as of yet. In the current pre-alpha version of the campaign, dialogue is written by the modders for each of their levels - since everyone has their own writing style and idea of the story, inconsitencies are bound to arise. We are still working on refining the script for all the characters in this project to ensure that all dialogue is consistent, realistic, and used in the right moments. We have already roughly determined which characters we want to modify the dialogue for and the estimates you see at the end of every character description are indication of this. As such, when you audition, you should come in prepared to voice the amount of lines listed, in the case you end up being cast for a role. On our end, we will do our best to change the estimates as well as final amounts as we work on the script behind the scenes - and stay as close to the estimates as we can.

We will also be keeping frequent contact with the auditioners on this page. Since there are high expectations for this mod, we believe that in order to have our voice actors excel, we need to be in good contact with all auditioners. As such, everyone who delivers an audition will receive specific feedback on their delivered lines pointing out what we like and dislike about the audition. You are free to submit a second audition based on this feedback - and naturally, you are most encouraged to take a peek at what others have sent in so far and what our thoughts on it are. On our end, we will do our best to reply to every audition within 24 hours. (EDIT: See the latest update announcement for an important change to this statement.)

We're looking forward to everyone's auditions!

(Thanks to Armpitcore420 for the character drawings!)

Latest Updates

  • The mod is released!

Hey everyone, As mentioned two days ago - Tennis Red is playable now and we could not be more delighted! Ten levels, ten mappers and a whole lot of fun - at least we're pretty sure it's a fun experience. We've put quite a few hours into testing and balancing. Everything you could ever want to know about the mod itself is on the workshop page description - right here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1848290546 On behalf of the Tennis team, we hope you'll enjoy playing it!
  • We're releasing... very soon!

Hello everyone! I'm beyond delighted to say that we will definitely be releasing 7Smoke Tennis Red this Thursday, the 29th! At first we weren't sure on whether we'd even release before the end of September, but as for development, things have moved at a much faster pace this time - perhaps thanks to experience, as this is our second time doing such a large-scale project. Everyone who's contributed to the end product - even the ones who only helped out a little - are more than eager to show what we've been working on for those past two years. Yep, we've really been working on this for over two years... First we'd like to show you a preview of the first three minutes of the mod: a hand-drawn introduction cutscene accompanied by the art of Armpitcore420, who also drew the character portraits in this casting call. And of course featuring the voice actors of our primary protagonists, RowanTree and Leader Looi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BHYScKmZJc For those of you interested in playing the mod when it comes out in two days, here's some things to know in advance. You will need to own the "Serious Sam Fusion 2017" game on Steam, which you will get for free by buying any of these three games. However, you will need all three to run our mod without errors. https://store.steampowered.com/sub/2535/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/41014/ https://store.steampowered.com/app/41070/ When the mod releases in full, I'll post another announcement with the download link to it. We're very proud of the end result. And I would like to once again thank every voice actor who made an audition to this project - we had a lot of material to work with and for that, even if we had an incredibly busy time behind us, we are very grateful for. As for the future - there will likely not be another Tennis project after this, so we'll focus on savouring the moment when the mod comes out in two days. :) Cheers, and thanks once more! Mauritsio
  • Development Update!

Hey all! I'm amazed that there are still people subscribed to this feed, so I wanted to give you all a little update on what we've been working on. We prepared a trailer, accompanied with a development update post, about what's to be expected from the mod in this stage. You can read it on our (7Smoke's) site! https://7smoke.net/article/175 Or watch the trailer directly here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNrZ9u45yio
  • Deadline is up!

Hey everyone, The deadline for auditioning is over! Thanks to every single person who submitted an audition. I just closed the project, but for some reason it marked every role as "Cast to offsite actor". BE SURE THAT THIS IS NOT THE CASE. I am simply preventing more auditions from coming in, we are still going to cast for every role! If you submitted an audition on May 6 or later, please know that we will not be considering that audition in particular. If you submitted before, we will judge based on this audition. We will not make any exceptions to this rule! We'll reveal our casts at the end of the week, Friday or Saturday! Thank you very much for your patience! Cheers, Mauritsio, project co-lead for 7Smoke Tennis 2018
  • The final day!

Hey everyone, Last day for auditions! I'm still working through the backlog of auditions and providing feedback where I can. I am not entirely available today but I am going to do my best to get to the very end of the list! Some clarifications to get out of the way relating to the end of the casting call: - Currently, in the script, all character barring Hudson and Amelia are written. I may not finish these two by the time we cast the roles, so if you are cast, you may need to wait a little longer to begin. But don't worry, we'll communicate this, - Any auditions submitted on May 6 or later will not be considered! Deadlines on CCC are date-inclusive, meaning the date itself is when the project closes. - Casting will occur on either next Friday or Saturday (10th and 11th, respectively). Cheers! Hudson

Role assigned to: RowanTree

A one-shot bounty hunter, Hudson is the main character of this campaign - and he is skilled at his craft. A former member of the Redeemers, Hudson has washed off the paint on his employer’s armour to forget about a troubled past with them. Hudson travels the galaxy, peeking everywhere to catch wind of rumours of long-forgotten treasures or poaching some of the most dangerous yet most valuable creatures in the galaxy. All this he does as a last resort to gather a stable income which is scarce thanks to living in the galactic frontier, far away from Earth. But sometimes, he sticks his neck out a little too far or lets curiosity get the better of him - and it ends up costing him.

In terms of the voice - Hudson‘s key character trait is an optimistic outlook, so this should end up translated into this voice. Aside from that, Hudson may actually sound a little generic - no unnatural low voices, no overdone intonations - somewhere in the age range of mid-20s. The part which is key to making Hudson interesting to listen to, is how you convey his sentences. Hudson will always be first to point out the bright side of things and display his curiosity when he discovers something he had not encountered before. And he’s used to an inconvenience or two, so when this happens, it should not alter his current view on the situation. This might change throughout the campaign, so we need some portrayal of fear, but worry not as when the need for this arises, it will receive indication in the script.

In summary, optimism and reckless curiosity are the keywords when you audition for Hudson. Important to keep in mind is that Hudson is not stupid - he is a little special, to put it in one way, but he’s still sane when he needs to be.

  • Atmospheric pressure, stable.. gravitation, within the standard... Well, that's perfect!

  • Hmm? Oh, no, no no no. I've been robbed once before. I am not letting my guard down again! Not that easily, my dear!

  • But I can't help but wonder... what kind of exciting treasures hide behind these doors? I do have the missing key... Amelia is going to kill me for this, buuut I won't turn down a get-rich-quick opportunity!

Amelia

Role assigned to: Leader Looi

A caring leader in charge of one of many domesticated Mental alien herds, Amelia is the secondary protagonist. She was eager to be part of the Redeemers quite some time ago and even volunteered for it. This motivation appears to stem from her empathy towards the creatures, which is a huge contrast compared to her colleagues only in it for the enormous salary tied to the job. Throughout the years she has risen to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her superiors, and now pilots a mostly disarmed Mental‘s Horde warship called the Akirion.

In terms of the voice, imagine Amelia to be an angry but sweet mother, with a held-back British accent (meaning you have the characteristics of one, such as the overdone vowels - just take care not to make these the defining character traits - make them subtle). She’ll be bossing Hudson around in the campaign, and when Hudson doesn’t exactly succeed in his missions, that ends up frustrating her a little - she gets notably angry but she’s not the person who would get excessively loud. So during these sequences, try to limit your tone. You may also consider dropping the British accent in favour of an American one. We imagine that Amelia has an intercultural background, so when panicked or in other situations that may have an emotional impact on her, she would fall back to her “native” accent instead of her more formal one. And if you wish, you can substitute the American accent for another one entirely. If you think it fits, go for it!

Amount of lines (not finalised): ±120

  • Not so fast. You're still wearing our armor. I expect you to follow our rules.

  • HUDSON! What were you thinking?! As far as I'm concerned, you could have been in cahoots with the enemy!

  • This is Commodore Amelia contacting any and all Redeeemer-class ships in this system! A Zalgrud has taken over a military base on Earth and I do not have the resources to stop him! Please, if you are able, send us reinforcements!

Dominator

Role assigned to: Jacob Williamson

A rash survivor of a species taught a harsh lesson, Dominator is one of two primary antagonists. A member of the Zalgrud species - or more accurately, the only member still alive. A cataclysmic event spelt a dark age for his home planet of Zalgun, destroying its ecosystem. Under the guise of the sandstorms, Dominator hid inside his Dome Complex, once at the centre of the Zalgun society, amassing an army of replicants and mutants. Dominator’s namesake is a unique ability he possesses to quite literally dominate his foes...

In terms of the voice, Dominator is the last surviving member of his race, so he should sound aged, but also, strangely intimidating. The three goons serving under him need a reason to serve under him - no doubt they’ve been scared by his appearance but that’s only a part of it. Therefore, a loud commanding presence, which at the same time remains composed and competent while talking to them, is needed of you. As for interaction with other characters, they are all pretty much human - the race which Dominator buries a deep hatred for. When talking to any human character, the listener might notice that Dominator undergoes a huge shift of tone - you’d almost think he respects the three goons when listening to this version. Try conveying this hatred through occasional sputtering (mockingly), putting emphasis on demeaning words, but what you should not do is hold back your voice. Dominator is, shall we say, the most “expressive” character, just not traditionally.

Amount of lines (not finalised): ±140

  • Var, hold them off as long as you can. Tar, prepare the implant.

  • You aren't even worth the effort! Weak, infirm - the other humans gave me a reason to dominate their minds!

  • Inhabitants of Planet Earth: your time in this galaxy has come to an end. Your base is now under the control of the Dominator, and your display of resistance is effort thrown to the wind!

Par, Tar and Var

Role assigned to: Benj_P

A trio of henchmen with no claims to fame - or anything, for that matter. The Dominator hired Par, Tar and Var (or rather, he threatened them) to join forces with him, being assigned many side missions to cause trouble in places where the EDF least expects it. If there’s one thing they are good at, it is troublemaking - because they’re goofballs, to put it bluntly. And their success rate is definitely the proof of this fact.

In terms of the voice, this will be a tricky audition, as you are effectively playing three characters. But they are triplets and so there should be a similar/central element to their voices. You could tackle it as one character with a multiple personality disorder, for example. It is important that at any point, the listener can distinguish the voices without the need to read into the subtitles.

The three goons should have a high-pitch voice, a little “crazed evil” voice, eccentric.
Par is always thinking way too far ahead or celebrating victory when a battle hasn’t even properly started yet. He is the most impatient of the three.
Tar is not exactly the most social or the brightest - he stutters over his words all the time and makes some of the most terrible strategic decisions. He is the stupidest of the three.
Var is the one pretending he’s the leader of the group, but he can’t control his supposed “underlings”. Most of the time he just makes them cause more trouble. He is the most unorganised of the three.

Amount of lines (not finalised): ±130 (all three characters combined)

  • (As Par) Hey, quit running around so much, it's making it harder for me to hit you!

  • (As Tar) W-Well, you can keep going all you want - you stand NOO CHANCE against my army! We outnumber you... very... greatly...!

  • (As Var) Both of you morons, quiet! We are leaving - NOW.

Captain Stone

Role assigned to: rob barnett

A no-nonsense commanding officer in charge of one the most destructive cruisers in the galaxy, Captain Stone is the secondary antagonist of this story. People know nothing about why he was chosen to take the helm of the Bravefang, the most combat-effective spaceship in the Earth Defense’s Force arsenal, on her maiden voyage. What people do know is his specialty: pacifying troublemaker star systems in a matter of days, and his overarching goal he keeps in the back of his mind - unveiling the shady practices of the Redeemers for all to see.

In terms of the voice, we need someone who never shows an emotional weakness - a tough exterior, so to speak. You could do this through a slow (but not grindingly slow) speech pattern, a naturally low voice, and a slight hint of a rasp in his words. The Captain would never lash out because of pure anger, even when highly threatened. He needs to intimidate both as an enemy and a superior officer - and that is totally his intention. He is always collected in battle and this presence allows his soldiers to be at their most confident. Because of that, it is expressively important that you do not use a stereotypical low “evil” voice! That is not our aim with this character.

Please note that due to several internal and story-related reasons, Captain Stone's name is not final. We are currently working out options for an alternative.
Amount of lines (not finalised): ±60

  • The way things work around here - is that lawbreakers like you end up penalized for their actions!

  • Save your bullets, Private Scarff. Munitions aren't easy to come by these days - except for all the fancy laser tech, of course...

  • All operational crew are ordered to evacuate the outposts, salvage unused weaponry and ammunitions, and regroup at Site 18 ASAP. WhiteEye satellites have confirmed the threat. The planet is under attack!

Role assigned to: CaptainStone

A minor recurring character in the campaign, the Sergeant supervises one of the squadrons within Captain Stone’s battalion.

In terms of the voice, we need someone who can put up a naturally loud voice but not appear as an authoritative, strict commanding officer - but instead emanates energy and determination. Essentially, this Sergeant doesn’t really believe in all the military protocol - he wants his squad to perform as best as they can - which translates into his dialogue. Even in the dialogue where the protocol forces him to use military jargon, you can still hear his “relaxed” side coming through.

Amount of lines (final): 12

  • Alright - cuff him! Carry him to the Velo, and tell our pilot we're going back to Site 18.

  • This is not a drill! I REPEAT, THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

Role assigned to: GetGianni

An automated male intercom announcer for the Dominator faction.

In terms of the voice, we need simply a fairly deep male speaker. We’re looking for someone who can maintain an identical tempo throughout all their words, but convey a heightened sense of danger to the listener in contexts where this is necessary - such as through tone of voice. It is also preferable to not be entirely lifeless in your delivery - pretend that the lines are pre-recorded - not entirely automatically generated - and need to suit that purpose.

Amount of lines (final): 9

  • INFORMATION: HATCH TO INNER DOME UNSEALED.

  • DANGER: UNWELCOME LIFEFORM DETECTED AT GATE 38. MILITARY GEAR IDENTIFIED. EXTERMINATION IS RECOMMENDED.

Role assigned to: SoSammi

An automated female intercom announcer for the Earth Defense Force faction.

In terms of the voice, we’re looking for a welcoming and young female voice who could remind the listener of a flight safety instructor. It is mandatory that the delivery is NOT lifeless - some keywords during a sentence will need added emphasis through tone of voice. For some sentences, we require a slight artificial pause between keywords to make the “automation” more believable. As you read the dialogue, dashes (-) indicate such pauses.

Amount of lines (final): 10

The troopers of the Earth Defense Force are its highly expandable military power. Thanks to rapid advancement in war-faring technology, combat training has become comparably far less rigorous as it is today - so really, anyone could enlist for the army.

In terms of the voice, we’re actually not picky at all. Some lines will require a different tone, like when speaking to a superior officer or speaking to one of your peers - not to worry, as we make the context of each line as obvious as we can. But try not to submit any overly goofy auditions - naturally, if you wish, you can have fun with the character if you so desire or think it will help the voice, just don’t go obviously overboard. Either way, it is a fairly free role - the only real requirement is the specified age range. All accents are welcome - it is an *Earth* Defense Force after all!

This is an unpaid role. These are four separate characters we are casting at once.

Amount of lines (final): 1 per character

  • (Any or both) Affirmative, Sergeant, the target is on our scopes!

  • (Any or both) Great... now we're both going to have to file a report...
