(beat) Let me see if I got the story straight. You named yourself Charles because of the Charles River, because you need a constant reminder that you went to Harvard. Whoop-dee-shit. Davis because Davis Square. Because you got your doctorate at Tufts. Because you're an academic jerk-off. SECOND SCENE QADIR Charles, I got to tell you, I am in a mood today. I am in a FUCKING MOOD. Do you know why? You're not going to ask so I'll tell you. We had a little incident down at Boston Harbor.

70 lines, one episode. He leads a platoon of domestic terrorists who live outside city limits in a hot savannah climate. They forage and scavenge for survival, and pray on vehicles that drive through their territory. The leader is a former engineer who left his home city when it flooded. He’s looking for a way into the Infinite City, where he feels like he has a better chance of finding shelter and supplies.

ROSALIND 1 Have you been here for so long you forgot? Jesus, be a God damned professional. It’s the one thing you had to remember. The siren means get to your places. The siren means WE GOT GUESTS. CHARLES What the hell are you talking about? ROSALIND 1 (exasperated) You—you're a Grace—you should be at the church. Or somewhere else. You—you're a Dalton...God knows where you’re supposed to be. I've never seen one of you before. GRACE Fuck, she hired a lookalike. The lookalike gets it and starts to fangirl. ROSALIND 1 You’re shitting me…Oh my God, it’s really you…it’s REALLY YOU! I never thought I’d actually meet one of you. Either of you. Both of you! After being here so long, I never thought I’d see anyone, to be honest. You know, except for the other actors, but they don’t really count, if you get me.

Only Rosalind 2 lines: GRACE I thought you all stuck to the tunnels. ROSALIND 2 We were in our places for the guests. For you. I was being awarded my Nobel Prize. I heard the gunfire. When you hear a combination of bullets and pulses, it usually means one of us is in trouble. So we came out. CHARLES Don't you try and steer clear of the bandits? ROSALIND 2 Some of us do. But we all have weapons, so some of us come up whenever we want. If I spent all my time in the tunnels, I would've gone crazy by now. (beat) Did you hurt people in there? GRACE Only people who were going to kill us. ROSALIND 2 We're not here for that.
25 lines. Unspecified age and ethnicity. A construction worker within the Infinite City who has come forward for an interview with the Cork Board news service. Avoid a stereotypical Jersey accent. He’s afraid and wary that he’s doing this interview. His voice will be altered to protect his identity. He’s worried that the secrets in the Infinite City might pose a threat to Americans and possibly the world.
Only Adam lines: Only Adam lines: BYRNE What are you building in there? ADAM You name it. There’s a version of NL Tower. Not as big, but maybe three-quarters the size. It’s white, and almost the same shape. Just a little...warped. BYRNE Warped? ADAM Yeah. Think of a doughnut. Wait, not a doughnut. What’s the doughnut that’s straight? BYRNE ...A cruller? ADAM Yeah, that. It’s twisted like a...what did you call it? BYRNE A cruller. ADAM Yeah, a cruller. Everything in the city's funny like that. We got Young's mansion in Andover, but it’s dark and creepy, like a haunted house. You see a lot of stuff like that. Places you’d know, but all wacky and oddball. The whole place feels like you just broke into a shut-down amusement park.
20 lines. Age 60-65. Brendan Fischer is a modest man who is easily overshadowed by his wife, Rosalind Young. They met in graduate school and got married just after when she received her doctorate. They were both bookish when they met, and were compatible at the time. When she was propelled to prominence, he was all the more forgettable. When he was 37 years old, he went missing. His car was found abandoned north of the family cabin in upstate New York, where he had the fondest memories of time with his wife and his son. He has since been declared dead. Charles punches is father in the face, knocking him to the floor. Fischer yelps in pain and covers his nose to stop the bleeding. YOUNG Dalton! You just punched your father in the face! BRENDAN I think you broke my nose! SCENE 2 CHARLES (to Brendan) All right, Dad. What’s your excuse? BRENDAN I’m not as willfull as your mother. I tapped out early...right after Melody died. (beat) She was a young, healthy woman who died because she worked on a hazardous chemical, the hazards of which we kept from the public. The hazards of which we STILL keep from the public.
30 lines. Unspecified ethnicity. Age 25-30. The wife of Charles Davis, the show’s main character. They were married in their mid-twenties and she died of cancer two years later, likely as a result of working with a toxic chemical produced by Natural Law, his mother’s company. Charles has resurrected her in the form of his AI, which voices his systems in his house and vehicle. She will sound conversational when she speaks. She will also appear as an actual ghost, where her speech with be a chorus of overlapping whispers.
(Ghost and Melody lines) An automated car drives itself with DR. CHARLES DAVIS snoring in the back. Someone speaks to him in his dream, someone familiar. It's a phantom whisper, sounding like an overlay of five voices rather than one. We'll call this voice GHOST. GHOST Dalton...wake up...WAKE UP. DING. Melody, his AI, notifies him. She's more conversational that today's AI. MELODY Charles, this is your wakeup reminder. We'll arrive at your office in two minutes. Shall I play today's headlines?

I think that's the thousandth time in eight years that I've heard that. Then MISTER Adamu gave some three-minute press conference to spew out some fake promises. RON If I hear one more word about the M4, I'm going to lose my mind. (beat) So we’ve got an absentee CEO who refuses to step forward and clean up her own mess, and we’ve got the American government too chicken to show the world that we’re the big dog in this fight. It’s infuriating. Ron takes pause and changes tone so something that approximates a rational human being. RON All right. I’m going to say something controversial, but hear me out. The M3 is dissolving as we speak. It’s like that fish in Old Man and the Sea, not that anyone out there is going to know that the hell that is. Anyway, this thing is going to fizz all the way down to a bar of soap in a couple of weeks anyway, and then no one’s going home with anything. (beat) Let’s just let one of them have it. One of the piddling countries like the URK, just to stick it to China and Russia. Let it be their problem. MERRICK (gets where Ron's going) I couldn’t agree more. America should just walk away from this fight and let someone else handle it. RON Let America be the one that brokers the peace. The two give it a moment and BURST INTO LAUGHTER.

HOUSE BANDIT 1 Well, who gives a shit. (to Grace) Where is it? CHARLES Food? We don’t know. We just got here. HOUSE BANDIT 2 Not food. The room. You live here. You should know. GRACE That makes no fucking sense. This isn't my home. It’s a movie set. I don't know where anything is. You want food? Check the fucking kitchen. HOUSE BANDIT 2 I've got no patience for this. Today we interview Dr. Rosalind Young, founder and President of Natural Law. This is one of the few interviews Dr. Young has granted in recent memory, and the first time she's publicly talked about the mysterious Infinite City in rural Maine. Vera Byrne reports.
We have a number of small roles (1-15 lines) that we need to cast. We'll add them in the script below. Feel free to read for any or all of them on your submission. Payment will depend on how many lines, and we pay $1.50 per line with a $10 minimum.
NL SECURITY GUARD (a security guard stationed at a corporate headquarters.) LINE: Ms. Adamu. Captain Dalal's been trying to reach you. (beat) Good morning, sir. Let me get the gate. LEVIATHAN BANDIT 1 (a henchman for a terrorist, someone battle-hardened but hungry for approval). LINE: (shouting) All you tunnel people--in the corner. Imagine you're playing the role of someone who's afraid of being shot. (second scene, takes a bite of an apple; it's the most delicious thing they’ve tasted in years) My God, I haven't had a real apple in forever. I can't remember if this is even what one really tastes like! (starts coughing, vomiting) Fuck...what's happening...this is BLOOD... BANDIT STOOGE (another henchman). LINE: (feeling something hot to the touch) God--that's fucking hot...(shouting) You down there! Get the fuck up and stop this fucking tank! HOUSE BANDITS 1 and 2 (rogue terrorists who run into the main characters in a house). LINES (feel free to read for both): HOUSE BANDIT 1 Did you kill that woman? Is that Rosalind Young? HOUSE BANDIT 2 How about that? The queen herself. HOUSE BANDIT 1 Well, who gives a shit. Where is it? The ROOM. You live here. You should know. HOUSE BANDIT 2 I've got no patience for this. I'm not talking about food. THE ROOM. Where is it? SAILORS 1 and 2 (two sailors aboard a ship during a pirate attack) LINES (feel free to read for both): SAILOR 1 What are we waiting for? It's a ghost ship, isn't it? SAILOR 2 I'm sure that's what the Captain's trying to figure out. SAILOR 1 It's one of ours, right? It's one of our patrol boats. SAILOR 2 I'm sure he's checking. SAILOR 1 I've already looked it up. It's one of ours. SAILOR 2 Seriously? SAILOR 1 That number is the Winston B. Carlisle. It's an active ship. It's one of ours. LODGE BANDIT (a rogue terrorist at a rural hunting lodge). LINE: We've been waiting for something worthwhile to stop by. It was worth the wait. How do I get inside? (about to shoot him) Whatever...I'll figure it out. USS VALIANT CAPTAIN (the captain of a freight vessel under attack). LINE: To the vessel claiming to be the Winston B. Carlisle. We know you are NOT the Winston B. Carlisle. We have received confirmation that the real Winston B. Carlisle is currently on patrol in the South Atlantic. We will prepare to board. Do not take action, or you will be fired upon. WAYBACK BANDIT (a rogue bandit encountered as the main characters make their way back home). LINE: You two, on the fucking ground! HELICOPTER REPORTER (a reporter reporting from a helicopter over the ocean, has to shout to be heard). LINE: You forget how massive the M3 is when it's at full capacity. It’s like looking at a white island. We've got 31 naval ships and they look like ants around an apple core. It's deathly quiet. You can't tell because of the drone motors, but we're the loudest thing for miles around. The silence down there is unnerving. You get the sense that something could happen at any moment. There's no activity, but a whole lot of tension. CITY BANDITS 1 and 2 (two rogue bandits on edge, feel free to read for both). LINES: BANDIT 1 Are they one of us? BANDIT 2 We’d know if they were. Shut your mouth. BRETT (a patient in a doctor’s office who has come across his doctor doing something shocking). LINE: (shocked) Dr. Davis? (pause) I… I should go… We can reschedule...
