The Woes of Whitby (A Dracula Retelling)

Project Overview

We are looking for voice actors to join our cast for an original audio drama based on Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula! This will be developed either in an episodic fashion (approx. 5 episodes), or as a full audio drama, to be streamed as a podcast. At this time, we are not offering payment for our actors, however, if this project were to take off we would be happy to pay our actors in the future. 

This piece does include mild violence and dark themes, so please be aware before you audition. 

SYNOPSIS

Whitby. The late 19th century. A thriving coastal town in North Yorkshire, England. Full of bustling streets, gothic spires, sweeping ocean views... and evil lurking in the shadows. When the young and outgoing Lucy Westenra suddenly falls mysteriously ill, those around her are thrown into a dangerous conflict in an attempt to protect her. To protect her from what, or whom, they don't even know. 

REQUIREMENTS

XLR or USB microphones are highly preferred. Audio must be high quality, with minimal to no background noise. 

Please have Discord and attach your name to your audition. If necessary, I can also communicate with you through CCC if cast. 

Please save your auditions as mp3 or wav files. 

You may audition for as many characters as you desire, with as many takes as you are comfortable with. 

This is a full 2 act piece with 100+ pages, so there are many lines to be recorded. Please be dedicated and aware of the commitment before you audition. 

Most importantly, have fun with it!

DEADLINE

The "deadline" is subject to change, but we will be sure to keep the cast up to date. The hope is to have this ready for the coming Halloween season. Currently, our script is completely finished, however we are actively transitioning this piece from a stage play to an audio drama. As the written lines are completed, we will be able to jump right into recording once we have our cast.

  • Audition Deadline Moved Up

    Hello all! My team and I have been SO impressed with the amount of talent and interest we have received in The Woes of Whitby. We would love to be able to use each one of you in our cast, but unfortunately don't have enough parts. Due to the talent we have already had audition, we have decided to start the casting process early in order to put a focus on the roles we still have yet to decide on. Jonathan Harker is a solicitor from Exeter, England, and Mina Murray's fiance. On a business trip to Transylvania, he mysteriously disappears... 

Jonathan is a sweet and caring man who enjoys his work and loves his fiance. After his ordeal in Transylvania, he's left emotionally distraught and struggling with PTSD. Nonetheless, nothing will stop him from being at Mina's side. 

MUST have a British accent. 

  • I… I cannot tell you what happened. It is not to keep secrets from you, but because the very thought of what transpired frightens me to my core. It was terrible, so terrible. 

  • His skin was cold to the touch, like that of the dead. 

  • (Resisting vampiric hypnotism) No.. I... Won't... Dance!

Mina works a tedious job that is too boring for her to even talk about, but outside of work she is full of life and deeply in love with her fiance, Jonathan Harker. She is very close with her childhood friend Lucy, who she goes to visit on holiday in Whitby, England, only to find that not everything is alright with her dearest friend. 

Mina is usually calm and reserved, displaying traditional lady-like behavior. Beneath the surface, she is passionate and sharp-minded. When those she loves are in danger, her inner strength comes to the forefront. 

MUST have a British accent. 

  • Hush now. You have come back to me, my love, that’s all that matters. Sleep, I will be here when you wake.

  • I remember when Jonathan proposed to me, I could hardly eat a bite for a week! But yet I wanted to spend every moment with him. Oh, how I miss him.

  • (Confident and direct) I believe you know much more than you let on, Mr. Renfield. I want you to understand that I also know much.

The daughter of a wealthy family, she is Mina Murray's best friend and Dracula's first English victim. She subsequently transforms into a vampire and is eventually destroyed. 

Lucy has a bold personality, uninterested in conforming to the oppressive standards for women of her era. Everything she does is with excitement, passion, and a little bit of sass! Once turned into a vampire, her personality is transformed into that of a sadistic manipulator. 

MUST have a British accent. 

  • Pish-posh! Lady-like behavior is oh so restrictive and depressing.

  • Yes, his name is Arthur. Arthur Holmwood. Oh Mina, he’s so sweet, and handsome! Intelligent, and handsome! Quite well off too, and did I say handsome?

  • (sweetly) Thank you! Thank you… (maliciously) for being so gullible!

Dr. Jack Seward is the administrator of an insane asylum. Seward conducts ambitious interviews with one of his patients, Renfield, in order to better understand the nature of his life-consuming psychosis, and to forget his own sorrows at being rejected by the woman he loves. 

Dr. Seward is a very collected, intellectually-focused individual, who relies on logic and science. When faced with matters of the heart, he is easily overwhelmed.

  • The case of my newest patient, Mr. Renfield, grows curiouser and curiouser. He was brought to me by the authorities after he was found attempting to bite citizens in the park. 

  • I am so sorry. Your caring heart does not deserve more grief.

  • (Bitterly) You don’t have to tell me anything. You don’t owe me anything. I was only your student, after all.

Arthur Holmwood is the fiancée of Lucy Westenra, and is best friends with the other two men who proposed to her on the very same day - Quincy Morris and Dr. Jack Seward. After Lucy’s demise, he helps hunt down Count Dracula.

Perceived as quiet and mild-mannered by most, Arthur comes alive when with Lucy. Arthur believes strongly in family ties, and when tragedy strikes, he becomes crushed, angry, and at times irrational.

Van Helsing is an aged doctor with a wide range of interests and accomplishments. He is well aware of the presence of vampires within our world and is the archenemy of Count Dracula.

Van Helsing is very blunt and direct, discarding with pleasantries when they get in the way. He is very focused on the larger scope of the vampire threat to the world. 

We are looking for a Dutch or European sounding accent. 

  • Do not disregard a conclusion simply because you cannot find an obvious path to it.

  • (Ominously) I hope that day does not come, but I fear it may. 

  • You shall not be the only student for this dark task. First, we must gather our friends.

Quincy Morris is a young American from Texas, and one of the three suitors for the hand of Lucy Westenra. After Lucy’s demise, he joins the group to help destroy Dracula. 

Calm, watchful, and level-headed, Quincy never loses his cool, and faces opposition with his Texas drawl and dry humor. 

Think country western accent. 

  • Excuse me being forward, miss, but won’t you just hitch up your saddle alongside me and let us go down the long road together?

  • I could jabber on for a fortnight about how your laughter is like a bubbling stream to a parched throat, or how your eyes shine like when the rising sun glints off the dewdrops hangin’ from the pine needles, but let me ask you straight: will you be my wife?

  • (Confidently) You wanna test my aim? Drop the swords.

Renfield is a resident patient in Dr. Jack Seward’s asylum. He was diagnosed a carnivorous madman, ingesting insects and spiders, believing their life-force will prolong his years. There is more to the man than it seems, as he has some strange connection to what is happening to Lucy Westenra. 

He is quite crafty and displays a superior intellect when he is not in a melancholy state or a fit of rage. He toys with those around him, but shoes great respect for anyone he considers his equal. He fluctuates between well spoken and manic senselessness.

  • (Manic) Dead things! You only feed me dead things.

  • Ah, ah, ah! That I mustn’t tell. You must figure it out yourself, my good doctor. I suggest soon, before He comes for me.

  • Please, doctor, I’m a lunatic, not a fool. I pick up on things…

Count Dracula is the main antagonist of The Woes of Whitby. Though usually portrayed as having a strong Eastern European accent, his spoken English is excellent, though strangely toned. Though usually calm and collected, when angered, the Count shows his true bestial nature.  

Dracula is arrogant and self-obsessed. He slyly uses his words to emotionally manipulate his enemies. 

Romanian accent, but not the traditional over exaggerated Dracula tone. 

  • Careful now. We wouldn’t want your brash actions to accidently harm our beautiful Mina, would we, Jonathan?

  • I wasn’t the one who so mercilessly drove a stake through her heart. Was it satisfying, Jack? To watch the woman who broke your heart have hers broken in return?

  • (Angry and Confident) You think you’re the first man whose divine mission was to stop me? Your kind comes and goes like mayflies. I, on the other hand, am ageless. Eternal.

Together, the sisters do Dracula's bidding, finding others for him to bring into their twisted family. The oldest of Dracula's "daughters", this Weird Sister is the most intellectual of her siblings, acting as the leader among the three. She is cunning and calculating.

  • Hold her, dear sister. Use the puppet to let Father in. We shall wake our new sister.

  • We’ll be sisters, Lucy. Father is coming to make you just like us. We’ll be together forever.

The Innkeeper runs the Transylvanian inn that Jonathan Harker stays in during his travels abroad. They know of the darkness that lurks within the Count's castle and worries for the innocent solicitor.

Sister Agatha runs the Hospital of St. Joseph's in Budapest with her fellow nuns. She is compassionate, caring and helpful to all those in need.
