Water's End
Project Overview
Water's End is a radio-play-style recreation of Peter Rader's 1991 screenplay for Waterworld. The project will be released in 3 segments as content for the "Mad Max Minute presents Waterworld H2O Minutes at a Time" podcast. Participants will record dialogue from the screenplay which will then be edited into the final product.
The first segment will post on March 22, 2022, followed by the other two in subsequent weeks on March 29 and April 5.

Morgan is described in the screenplay as "rugged, weather-beaten. No sentimentality here. This is MORGAN, a drifter in his early 40's." Morgan is a loner, his only companion is a horse that he keeps on his barge. He has chosen solitude after pirates killed his wife and stole his son away, therefore he is wary of strangers and hates pirates.
(MORGAN reluctantly decides to transport HELEN and ENOLA)
I unload you at the next flotilla. Until then, you do what I say...when I say it. You catch your own food and you better start recycling your piss, because I'm not sharing my hydro.(MORGAN aims his speargun at HELMUT)
Yeah. You can't run away from me. That scar on your left arm. You've had it all your life, right? How could I know that? Because you were a baby when it happened.(MORGAN stands before the others, holding up a globe)
This is Waterworld. Before the Great Thaw, Water's End was everywhere. Then, the ocean rose and covered it all.
Helen is described as "a striking if a somewhat intense young woman in her late twenties", She has lived on a flotilla most of her life and is fierce to defend those close to her such as her Sister Angel and especially her adopted daughter Enola. Helen is courageous.
(RODNEY bemoans the impending pirate attack)
Don't say that! We have to win, that's all. We can't let them find it before us! How many times have we rehearsed for this? We're gonna give them the fight of their lives…(HELEN is eye to eye with the LAZLO, Lord of Pirates)
If you so much as touch her, I’ll rip your balls clear out of the sack.(HELEN sits down at the foot of MORGAN's bed)
I thought it would be a shame if we didn’t give being friends a chance.
Enola is described as "An angelic, though impish GIRL of twelve." Enola was set adrift as an infant and adopted by Helen never knowing her true parents or from where she came. Enola is precocious and hopeful. At one point in the screenplay, Enola is drugged and must revert to a more infantile manner of speaking.
(ENOLA pleads with MORGAN)
Don’t kill us, please. We were attacked by pirates! They killed everybody! We’re the only survivors.(ENOLA looks at the horse, her tone is conspiratorial as she speaks to MORGAN)
You're from Water's End too, right? That's where you got the an-im-al…(ENOLA calls out to the other defenders)
To starboard at the bow! Amidships, to port, three ropes!
Angel is described as a "tough-looking woman with short spiked hair" she is Helen's sister and also lives on a flotilla. Angel is courageous like her sister, but with an added edge to her. Angel is eager to defend herself and others from pirates and is able to think ahead in order to make contingencies ahead of time. Smart and dangerous.
(to SIMON)
Don't worry. I'll take care of him.
(to TROY)
Follow me.(ANGEL kills a pirate by impaling him with a huge sword)
Fucking sexist!(ANGEL fires a flaregun into a pool of gasoline)
I just made your chances zero. In a couple heartbeats this whole fucking ship's gonna blow up. Now get your ass into the airship.
Troy is simply described as "a boy of sixteen." He lives on the Flotilla until it is attacked by pirates and he is taken to become a conscripted fighter. He is branded and forced to learn how to fight. Troy is a timid young man thrown into the deep end and forced to survive.
Why did you do that? We're prisoners.
(to CARLOS)
Never let down your guard, asshole. All the searchers have been looking down -- onto the waves -- when the secret was to look up into the sky.
Wanda is described as "A completely bald BLACK WOMAN, tough but somehow endearing." Wanda enters the story 1/3 of the way through and lives on a submarine with 3 Japanese-speaking men, she acts as their translator in negotiations, though no translation happens in the dialogue. Wanda has a dominant streak in her and mentions her enjoyment of tying up her partners.
(WANDA is caught in an attempt at deception)
Hey give us a break. It's tough getting hydro in a sub.(WANDA is talking to HELEN while doing engine repairs)
Daihiro tried to get in your pants? That two-timing S.O.B... He’s gettin’ sick of me, I can feel it. I like tying him up, you know... kinky stuff.(WANDA pushes CORNELIUS away from her)
Who are you? I thought everybody on this tub died of blackbone?
Lazlo is described as "Huge. Six-eight at least. Hip-length hair. Yellow. Not blonde, balloon yellow. He has a solid gold triangle attached to his forehead. And his cape -- it's a dense mesh of bird feathers!" Lazlo is a megalomaniacal warlord who sweeps over flotillas with his army of pirates, stealing away the women and children and killing the men, elderly, and infants. He is a villain in every sense of the word.
(SIMON looks at Lazlo, horrified)
Exactly. NOW... let's get to business. We heard that you have a little girl here. A little girl with a little tattoo. I want her. Are you afraid of death?(LAZLO addresses his newest conscripts)
Look around you, my sons. You could be part of this. And loyalty is so effortless. "Do what you're told.” What could be simpler?(MORGAN dangles on a fishhook through his shoulder)
I remember you now. I killed your wife all those years ago. Too ugly to save. But your son... what a faithful little soldier he's become. He'd give his life for me…
Helmut is described as "A YOUNG MAN, unique in appearance -- one of his eyes is blue, the other green." Helmut is one of Lazlo's conscripted soldiers, fiercely loyal, held in high esteem and responsibility. Helmut is also Morgan's long-lost son, a revelation that comes 2/3's of the way through the story and leads to Helmut betraying Lazlo in the final act.
(TROY is petrified at being conscripted into LAZLO's pirate army)
I was standing there, once. It's not so bad.(HELMUT kicks MORGAN in the gut)
Sorry, pops. Just my rebellious phase.(DIETER holds BLAKE at gunpoint)
It’s a big lie, don't you see? He's only loyal to himself. You think he’s gonna take you to Water's End? Look at your hand. You're not a perfect “physical specimen.”
Carlos is a pirate, part of Lazlo's army. He appears in several key battles and is your typical tough guy.
(CARLOS holds a blade to HELEN's throat)
You wanna die?(CARLOS approached LAZLO)
The Japs say they know nothing. They stole 'em from a drifter. The woman and kid ain’t talking.(CARLOS swings a sword at TROY)
Never let down your guard! You hopeless moron. I oughta kill you right now.
Dieter is a pirate whose left hand has been replaced with a metal pincer, he is one of Lazlo's loyal soldiers and a sort of friend to Helmut/Blake.
(DIETER addresses a group of new conscripts)
It's pretty simple. Bend or break. You either join us or die. Carlos teaches you how to fight. If you survive his little seminar, you'll be half-way there.(DIETER holds BLAKE at gunpoint)
Loyalty... we all stick together, remember? What happened to you?
Doc is described as "an obese quack with jaundiced skin and rotting teeth." He is foul-mouthed and lascivious.
(rummaging through a cart of surgical instruments)
Where the fuck is that piece of shit needle?(his eyes light up)
I’ll take the feisty one.
Cornelius is described as "a LITTLE GUY. No more than four and a half feet. Mousy looking. Cracked glasses. A lab smock." Cornelius is the sole resident of a derelict aircraft carrier, a scientist of sorts with a superiority complex.
(incredulous at not being recognized by MORGAN and WANDA)
Who am I??? I'm Cornelius Funky, inventor of the antidote for blackbone. who are you -- is more the point -- and what are you doing on my ship?(MORGAN points to a ramp and asks if it can be raised)
Why do you people keep asking me these silly questions? Haven't you understood, there's nothing I can't do.(ANGEL fires a flare at a pool of gasoline beginning a chain reaction of destruction)
Oh no! Oh no... you shouldn't have done that... They never taught me to fly! I don't know how it works…
Simon is described as "an ancient man of at least eighty." He is the defacto leader of the flotilla at the beginning of the story, he is killed off in the first 10 pages.
(SIMON stands up to the pirate LAZLO)
We have no leader. It's a round table democracy.(horrified by LAZLO)
You're a monster!
