Through The Panels

Through The Panels

Project Overview

About the Project

Through the Panels is a visual novel project focusing on friendships and dynamics between groups of people. This is our studio's fourth visual novel, and the first to feature voice acting. This is a commercial project, and the finished game will be available in two versions: free (includes 2 full routes), and premium (includes all 7 main characters' routes + additional content).

We are currently casting roles for all the characters that will be featured in the demo portion of the game. We also have some other side/minor characters that will need voices in the future, and we will open auditions for those characters at a later date.

Due to budget constraints, the game will feature partial voice acting rather than full, with short phrases, words, or various sounds (laughs, sighs, coughs, etc). We will be paying 50¢ per line, with about 20-30 lines per character for the time being. Depending on our finances further along the development timeline we may contact you for more work, so please do let us know about your future availability as well.

We will require you to sign a release if chosen for a role, because the game will be commercial. As such, unfortunately we cannot hire anyone under 18.

Story

Mimi Stokes is an ordinary girl from New Jersey who's always dreamed of two things: becoming a comic artist, and moving to Asia.
When her dad's job uproots her family and lands them in the foreign land of Hong Kong, Mimi is thrilled -- especially as her new school mates all seem like characters straight out of her favourite mangas and dramas.
So can anyone blame her when she goes out of her way to meddle in their personal matters? After all, it's research for her comic!

  • Thank you to everyone who submitted an audition!

Hello! We would first like to thank everyone who auditioned again. We were surprised by the number, and very grateful for the interest in our project! While it was a really tough call due to all the wonderful submissions we got, we've made our decision and will be updating the information here, as well as announcing the full cast over on Twitter. We really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to audition for Through the Panels, and hope to hear your voices again in the future!

Thanks so much to everyone who has auditioned for this project! We really appreciate all the interest, and it's been great to hear everyone's interpretations of our characters. While the page currently lists all the characters as being cast to offsite actors, we just wanted to clarify this isn't the case -- we're sorting through all the auditions at the moment, and we aim to make our decisions by the 25th.

The player character, a cheerful and upbeat 15-year-old girl who has just moved to Hong Kong from New Jersey. When she's not watching her favourite dramas or reading shoujo manga, she's working hard on her own comic ideas. What she lacks in social graces, she more than makes up for in enthusiasm. Loves making puns a little too much.

Medium-high voice, peppy and bubbly. American accent.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "I'm Mimi Stokes, and I'm stoked to be here!"
[Self-introduction, she genuinely thinks this is a great joke.]

  • "It's like I'm watching a drama unfold in front of my eyes!"
[Giddy, excited. Completely swept up in the gossip and drama at her new school.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a laugh, a sigh, and a sound of surprise.

A go-getting Asian-American girl in the same grade as Mimi, who already has her 10-year-plan mapped out. Hailing from North Carolina, she was a new student last year, and is now volunteering her time to show new students around this year -- alongside her many other extracurricular activities.

High pitched voice. Energetic, determined, and full of confidence. American accent, very slightly Southern.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "It's never too early to start planning for college applications, you know!"
[Confident, upbeat. Trying to psych Mimi up about extracurriculars.]

  • "Wait, don't eat yet! We have to take pictures for InstaBook!"
[Panicked, trying to stop Mimi from eating a cake.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a giggle, a sigh, and a sound of surprise.

Seldom liked by her peers, and yet inexplicably "popular" -- whatever that means. She seems content to live her school days free of the concerns of, well, schoolwork, and instead focuses her attention on what club might accept her fake ID this weekend. In the grade above Mimi and Sami, but is definitely not above starting a fight with them. Japanese-born, Hong Kong-raised.

Medium/high voice. Sharp, assertive, and a little rough around the edges. American/International accent.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "Hey, new kid. This is our table."
[Condescending, annoyed. Has just met Mimi, who has unknowingly sat at her lunch table.]

  • "You've been here for a month, I'm sure someone has caught your eye. This stays between us, don't worry."
[Teasing, but at the same time intimidating. Trying to get Mimi to share some juicy gossip with her.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a genuine laugh, a sigh, and a derisive/snide laugh.

The shining star of the school's badminton team and an exemplary student. A rare example of someone who is popular simply for being kind and courteous. The object of many students' affections, though he is completely oblivious to this. Korean-born, Hong Kong-raised.

Medium voice. Soft and gentle. American or very slight British accent.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "I'm Nolan Kim. It's nice to meet you."
[Polite, reserved. Meeting Mimi for the first time.]

  • "You mean to work on this assignment? That's not necessary... I think it's an in-class one, right?"
[Confused, factual. Someone's just asked him out and it went completely over his head.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a laugh, a sigh, and a confused sound.

Loyal to a fault, Cherry often finds herself acting as an unpaid mediator between Sami and Umi, her two closest friends. On top of her schoolwork, duties as part of the student council, and other extracurriculars, lately she finds herself wondering if her thankless job is worth it. Malaysian-Chinese.

Medium/low voice. Mature, feminine, and warm. Often sounds older than she is. Light British accent if possible.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "You should really try getting along with others, Umi."
[Motherly scolding. Trying to lecture Umi on her attitude towards other students.]

  • "Hermès! That's not funny!"
[Shocked, annoyed. In response to Hermès joking and gossiping about drama within their friend group.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a laugh, a sigh, and a thinking sound.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "My name's Richard, but most people just call me Dick. And yes, I've already heard everything you have to say about it."
[Tongue-in-cheek. A self-introduction to new members of art club.]

  • "I really shouldn't have to tell you this, but if you miss the deadline, you will not be featured."
[Serious, a little stressed out. He's just realised that only 5 people have met the deadlines for the school's art magazine, which he is in charge of.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a chuckle, a sigh, and a thinking sound.

A fun-loving slacker who lives to party, start drama, and drop his soundcloud link in Twitter threads. His immaturity often causes people to believe that he is younger than he actually is. British-born Chinese.
(His name is pronounced like the fashion brand, not the mythology figure.)

Medium voice. Energetic and cocky. Light British accent; he watches a lot of American television and desperately tries to hide his posh upbringing.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "You know I can't think before I've had caffeine, it's way too early."
[Whining, tired. Bickering with Umi, but he's clearly the one being unreasonable -- it's noon.]

  • "That's right! Go to class! Stay in school! Get that education, kiddo!"
[Overly enthusiastic. Trying to cheer Mimi on whilst distracting her from some gossip he's sharing with other students.]

A student in the grade above Mimi who was probably named after his favourite thing to do. Nolan's self-proclaimed rival, and the school's sailing club captain who's always got something to prove. Born in Hong Kong, but his family are originally from New York.

Medium/high voice, American accent. Arrogant, self-assured, and a little entitled, but gets flustered easily. Sounds like what you'd expect a typical prep school boy to sound like.

Will have ~30 lines.

  • "What? No one said ANYTHING about that!"
[Shock, embarrassment. Umi has just called him out on his crush in front of other people.]

  • "Ugh... Why is that guy so popular? Isn't his fanclub full by now?"
[Irritated. Complaining about Nolan, who he is clearly jealous of, but he won't admit it.]

  • Please make several sound effects: a laugh, a sigh, and an annoyed sound.

As Adrian is trans, we would prefer to cast a trans voice actor for his role.

[Excited, trying his best to be convincing. Trying to talk Mimi into going to the school-wide beach party.]
