The West Patch - 10ep dark satire web series!

Project Overview

~About The West Patch~

-we apologize that this passion project is so low budget-

(DEADLINE NOTE: Please do not be alarmed! We have shifted the deadline from the 25th to the 28th because our dear number-dyslexic show runner wanted to reflect what we've been telling people on other web pages. It will not change again, and we're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.)

There is a genre of cartoons meant to protect children from reality: the characters learn a moral at the end of the day, always resolve their differences, and wake up the next day as though nothing bad ever happens. But what if it did? In the pleasant neighborhood of the West Patch, the thin veil of happiness starts to tear, and consequences for the characters' actions begin to linger.

This is a satire series where we deconstruct consequence-free cartoons with a psychotic and magical twist! In ten episodes that run approximately five minutes each, the family and friends of the West Patch will break from their perky states of denial to unexpected self-reflection, all in the peppy narrative of their daily lives as told by the increasingly frustrated narrator. Join the descent into madness! Join the West Patch voice team!

Audition Tips:

- We're looking for consistent quality over everything else, to meet our desired level of post production. Some VHS filters we're going to use may help, but clean recordings will still get priotiry.

- Since we're modeling this after 80's cartoons, actors that can have fun with a large emotional range will make great contributions to the West Patch team!

- Despite what the character profiles say, all accents are welcome (Couldn't select 'any' on the accent drop down). Again, we'd like consistency, but feel free to have fun and try things, as well! We've curated auditions for an animated project before, so we'll be able to pick up on your potential even if an experimental take isn't quite what we're looking for.

- Any questions? Message our facebook page or inquire on discord (USSRamshack#7879)

  • For Those Asking for Feedback

Hello everyone! Thanks for the tremendous response so far. It means a lot to us that when we can only offer so little, so many people still want to get involved. So we decided to find a way to give back a little! Many of you asked for feedback with your audition, and many of you stated you were beginners, or even auditioning for the first time here (how exciting!). Since we're also trying to break into the field, we thought giving feedback was a good way to share the support we've been give. Since commenting on 600+ auditions would be messy, time consuming, and potentially ignored by many, we decided on a more organized approach! If you would like technical feedback on your audition, email us at theWestPatch [at] gmail.com and we'll give you our best praise, insight, and advice *AFTER* auditions close! We listen to each and every one of your submissions, and would be glad to give this small thing in return. Can't wait to see what's still to come in our last ten days of casting, and thanks to those who have already given us so much to work with! Best, The West Patch Team

Pogey No-Leg (76 lines)

Unpaid
Role assigned to: HennigarVO

The somber child of the group, aptly named Pogey No-Leg has perpetually labored breath due to the hard limp owed to his peg leg. He is usually quiet, but values the few opportunities he takes to participate with the others. Due to his slowness, he’s used to being ostracized as the others lack the patience to let him keep up. His accident is a distant but ever-present memory regularly causing sadness to hang in his tone, and otherwise he always sounds polite and a bit closed off. When he truly feels the freedom to speak his mind, he has an inquisitive, methodical inflection.

  • (polite) I'll go get some tools from The Tamber.

  • (gravely serious) What can you tell me about magic scrolls?

  • (fake chipperness) Did the others send you to help me with the tools? (firm or fearful)  ...It's not what it looks like.

Pumpkin Kid (61 lines)

Role assigned to: ReignOfTiramiZu

The jokester of the group, Pumpkin Kid is recognized by his signature ‘Tahaha!’ laugh. If there’s something to be made fun of, he’ll be sure to take a jab at it, whether it’s clever, appropriate, or not. As a doted on younger sibling, he’s used to getting away with causing trouble, and is fueled by the attention of others, good and bad attention equally rewarding. In key moments of rejection, he sobs uncontrollably. NOTE: Very important that this character can communicate through nonverbal sounds as well.

  • (playful, prideful) I’m king of the tower! I’m king of the tower! Tahaha!

  • (whining, obnoxious) Fine, take the dumb helmet. I’m putting the belt on, anyway!

  • (sobbing, non-verbal distress)

Gale Ponytail (32 lines)

Role assigned to: shiena

The queen of the world in her own mind, Gale Ponytail excels at luring favor and making any given thing about herself. She is outwardly sweet, yet inwardly greedy and vile, with only a thin line in between. She isn’t afraid to be loud, and often earns the attention she’s given through valid points and preparedness. She is the child who anticipates, which makes surprises her undoing. Her tone is calculated, and can spiral in all sorts of emotional directions when she isn’t getting her way.

  • (perky) I’ll go down the main road and invite everyone there! (thinly veiled snobbish) No-Leg, you can get The Tamber.

  • (snidely, bragging) I already wished him a good morning.

  • (wistfully, doting) Oh Orpho, don’t you want to pick this flower for me?

Orpho / Sonny (38 lines)

Role assigned to: Rogerhanna

Before the story derails, Orpho (later called Sonny)  was meant to be its protagonist. He’s the quintessential charismatic, spoiled hero wannabe who has the final say in anything the group does. He speaks with authority and zeal that all too often slips into whining or a smug jeer. Having grown up with no real threats, he is ignorantly fearless. When real harm is introduced, he becomes a clueless, sniveling mess unable to hold his own.

  • (teasing, arrogant) What an awful kick! How did you manage to aim so poor?

  • (mesmerized, excited) What if it will make me irresistible...

  • (pouting, angry) Stop it, stop it, stop it! This is my special day!

Leveret (45 lines)

Unpaid
Role assigned to: annabeck

The tallest of the children, and the only one who lives on her own, Leveret is always looking for opportunities to get farther in life. She has a superior demeanor that’s often ignored by the others, and tries to get ahead with stubborn effort. To her, every interaction is a competition, and she isn’t satisfied until she wins, making most of life rather unsatisfying. With a bratty undertone and haughty attitude, she voices a great range of snooty, begrudging antics.

  • (playful, confident) Thank you very much! I know, I’m a very powerful magician.

  • (with false urgency) I think I hear my tail calling! You all have fun with this - Bye!

  • (patronizing, manipulative) I bet if you had a new best friend you wouldn't be so sad and lonely.

Mommy Zelle (50 lines)

Unpaid
Role assigned to: ClareBear

Mommy Zelle is the uppity captain keeping the house a tight ship. She’s smart and cunning, having lived an adventurous life and connived her way into a relaxing retirement. This pressure of feeling smart creates a rift between her desire for deserved retirement and the certainty that for something to be done right she must do it herself. Her tone is huffy while sharing qualities of a classic mom.

  • (excited but commanding) Run wake the children and tell them what to do while I get the kitchen started!

  • (lovingly, tender) Could you do me a huge favor and get more firewood from the wood shed?

  • (uppity, impatient) Someone put more tea on the kettle!

Your Dad (36 lines)

Role assigned to: JohnMondelli

Father to everyone and no one, Your Dad has taken the mantle of man of the house, which means fumbling to keep up with Mommy Zelle’s lead. He enjoys fun, basking, and getting carried away with a fun task when he should be doing work. Doughy and often caught by surprise, he has a clumsy disposition and stammering speech with a resiliently kind undertone.

  • (bumbling) What now? What's going on? Oh dear...

  • (overconfident) Aha! I knew I was right.

  • (flustered) Oh! Who would be knocking during a storm like this?

Starting as the titular sentient house, House is an energetic home-maker with a dopey disposition despite his attentive care to the family. Weary but always eager, his sense of general good natured-ness makes him somewhat childlike regardless of his old age. When he’s returned to the form of a man, he’s constantly breathless, but all the more desperate to show his loyalty in every thoughtful gesture.

  • (friendly) Wake up, children! Today is picnic day, hmm!

  • (dutifully) Yes ma'am, hmm!

  • (frazzled, emotional) Oh my! Why, I'd be most honored!

Role assigned to: PawPaw Greg

Old and haggardly, The Tamber is a mysterious hermit with curt speech and inquisitive vocalizations. He has a subtlety to his silence that makes his few words speak volumes, and his relationship to the family, though fond, has an unclear past. When he does speak, one thing is clear; he’s the wisest man in all the West Patch.

  • (apprehensive) Did you do that?

  • (Foreboding) Means bad things happen. Some places more than others.

  • (determined grunt, suspicious grunt, surprised grunt)

Magic Dad (16 lines)

Role assigned to: MarlonVoiceActor

In his brief but poignant appearance, Magic Dad shows his world-weary expertise with problem solving via magic. He lives in a realm apart from everyone else, a jaded, spent world that suffers no sparkling adventures. The tired precision of his tone reflects this, though it also holds a casual edge since he knows the people of West Patch don’t require or earn any formality.

  • (annoyed, firm) She didn't go anywhere. She stopped.

  • (insistent) No one else hears that?

  • (emotionally spent) ...I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. Goodbye.

Narrator (82 lines)

Role assigned to: Adam Woolley

The bombastic, emotionally invested keeper of the West Patch’s narrative, the Narrator plays an important part in setting each episode’s tone. They like to follow classic adventures, but often get upset when an unexpected event takes their lovable story and sullies it. All they want is to tell charming tales with positive lessons, and anything that gets in the way of that becomes a threat.

  • (articulate, spirited) Another day shines on the West Patch, and after the family’s tremendous, snowy adventure, they’ve been content to stay warm in the house for a while.

  • (gleeful, inquisitive) Oh! What has Pogey No-Leg found? Something to add to the picnic’s fun?

  • (disturbed, panicked) What is he doing? He needs to get help! Something horrible has happened! What on earth is he doing!?

Closing each episode with unhampered enthusiasm, Next Time wishes the viewer well while delivering a single line related to the segment’s theme. They are unaffected by the morals or turns of events, simply excited to contrast the foreboding story with the joyful aspirations to see the viewer again next time.

  • (unhampered enthusiasm) Doesn’t the new season come with such amazing surprises? See you next time!

  • (unhampered enthusiasm) It’s fun to resolve arguments! See you next time!

  • (unhampered enthusiasm) Happy Birthday to all our friends! See you next time!
