The reason behind, a Lovecraftian video game.
Project Overview
Hi! Nice to meet you, and thank you for taking the time to check out this project.
My name is Valentin, and I'm an indie game developer currently looking for talented actors and voice actors to bring the characters of my game to life.
The game is a narrative-driven, third-person detective adventure set in a realistic 3D recreation of Providence, Rhode Island, during the 1950s. Players step into the shoes of a detective investigating a series of mysterious murders. By gathering clues, solving puzzles, examining crime scenes, and interrogating suspects, they'll slowly uncover a truth that is far more unsettling than it first appears.
The story is heavily inspired by film noir and the psychological and cosmic horror themes of H. P. Lovecraft, blending grounded detective work with subtle supernatural elements. The focus is on atmosphere, storytelling, memorable characters, and cinematic dialogue rather than action.
I'm looking for performers who can deliver both voice acting and facial performances for the game's dialogue scenes. My goal is to make every conversation feel as natural and cinematic as possible.
For each scene, you'll be asked to:
Record your dialogue with clean audio.
Record yourself on camera while performing the scene so your facial expressions, eye movements, and timing can be captured. (No special equipment required, any 1080p camera will do, if you record at 60fps that's even better)
Important: Facial video is used solely to extract facial performance and timing. Your appearance, identity, and likeness will not be reproduced or used in the final game. No photorealistic digital copy of your face will be created. Only the facial motion data will be used to animate the game's original characters.
This is a paid project.
Actors are compensated at $0.20 USD per spoken word or 3,5$ per line. The estimated payment for each role is listed in its casting description, so you'll know approximately what to expect before auditioning.
A respectful and organized production.
Clear scripts and character direction.
Prompt communication throughout the project.
Credit in the game's final release.
A story-driven experience with a strong emphasis on character performances.
If you enjoy detective stories, character-driven narratives, film noir, and atmospheric mysteries with subtle supernatural elements, I'd love to hear your audition.
Thank you for your interest, and I hope you'll become part of this journey!
More about me: I have been developing this game for two years now. This is my first game but I have been working with IT projects for 17 years. I really love cinema and video games so I'm trying to get my two passion together into this project. My personal favorites are LA Noire, Resident Evil, Alan Wake.. I also really love Lovecraft and I would love to create something that really relates to his work.
Cheers!

Short summary of the story:
A detective is hired to locate the heirs of the wealthy and enigmatic Harold Blackwood after his death. What begins as a seemingly straightforward inheritance case gradually unravels into a series of murders, long-buried family secrets, and a conspiracy tied to an ancient, otherworldly force. The game will have three murders to investigate, this casting is about the first one, the murder of William Kane.
UPDATE: I wanted to add that the NAVA AI rider will be attached to the contracts of the selected applicants. Thank you.
NAME: Howard Patrick Larson

GENDER: Man
ORIENTATION: Straight
VOCATION: Private Investigator
GAME ROLE: Protagonist/Player Character
TRAITS: Smart, Inquisitive, Cynical, Withdrawn
WANTS: To help good people even if it costs a lie
NEEDS: To avoid feeling useless/powerless
HOPES: To be free of the nightmares and sleep well

BACKGROUND:
Growing up in New York state, Howard had always dreamed of becoming a doctor ever since he was a kid. It was less about healing people and more to uncover the mysteries of the body, the inner workings of the dark unseen. Mystery books were among his favourite for the same reason. They were a close comfort in his childhood. He lost his father to World War I at age 5, contracted a bad case of Scarlet Fever at age 9, and began calling his stepfather ‘pa’ at age 12 when he realised he was just holding on to a ghost. Howard had smarts. More than that, he liked to challenge himself. Turns out, the world had one ready. After his medical residency, World War II broke out. Howard was drafted as soldier and surgeon.
A year into his military service, Howard’s squad was captured by Nazi forces. At a POW camp a sadistic officer named Heinrich Kraus tortured Howard for weeks seemingly to extract intelligence from him. When allied forces liberated the camp and captured Kraus, Howard – possessed by vengeance – seized an opportunity. Late at night he sneaked into Kraus’ holding cell and inflicted his suffering back upon his torturer. Kraus died from his wounds (supposedly). For this act Howard was discharged from the military, and when the NY Board of Medicine learned of his conduct they also revoked his medical license, ending his career.
A devastated Howard crawled through dark times upon his return. Drowning and distracting himself from his woes any way he could. At a veterans’ bar he met a man named Logan Hargrave, a fellow veteran who took Howard under his wing and helped put him back together. On Logan’s suggestion Howard became a private detective, telling himself that he could still help people this way. Yet bitterness remained. The post-war nightmares, losing his career, and the vile cases he gets as a PI – cases born of lust, envy, greed – all weigh heavy on Howard’s soul. Regrets twist him up inside, more every day. And while his troubled nights leave him exhausted, he has not noticed a dark influence slowly creeping into his life.

WANTS: To make the person she loves happy
NEEDS: To be needed
HOPES: That Howard gets what he deserves
FEARS: That she’ll be discovered
VOICE PROFILE: New York accent. A sweet motherly voice. Lots of attitude, but not mean (usually).
BACKGROUND:
Born and raised in New York City, Sarah always had dreams of a better richer life, but her choices kept her circling the same neighborhoods. She worked various jobs to survive: waitress, hotel maid, secretary when she finished training. She one day found an ad for an assistant at a Howard Larson Detective Agency. By some coincidence she had gone to the same school as Howard, one graduating year ahead of him. Easily she won the job and proved herself invaluable to the agency.
By day she is simply a sassy overbearing assistant who mostly keeps things organized and keeps her boss Howard in one piece. But secretly she is working to destroy Howard and expose him for the butcher that he is. At least, so she was told by her boyfriend Clive, a mysterious European man whose body is riddled with scars. Through him Sarah learned of the awful things Howard did during the war, including torturing Clive who was merely an academic. Filled with disgust, Sarah continues to wear her smiles to work, all the while enacting Clive’s plan: poisoning Howard’s coffees, hypnosis, occasional evidence tampering – all to create the perfect moment to expose Howard as a butcher.
There are times she feels conflicted about this double life. But she only has to remember Clive’s stories, and of the life of peace she and him will have after their revenge, to recommit to the lie.

BACKGROUND:
Jack was a loving brother to Charlotte Kane (wife of the murdered William Kane). They were close ever since they were children, each inspiring the other. Whilst Charlotte had a mind for money and business, Jack was the artist. If only he could decide on a path. At times he’d be a writer, a painter, a composer. And each time a career failed, Charlotte made no judgment to bail her brother out of a bind.
Jack always felt William hated him for it. When Charlotte died, Jack was devastated – yet he couldn’t help but feel something was off about the timing of it. So he went to confront William, only he ended up interrupting William during some kind of ritual that left his psyche broken. What Jack saw cost him his mind, and any time he tried to describe it, doctors were assured to consign him to a straitjacket. In the paperwork however, William made sure to note that Jack was trying to falsely incriminate him for Charlotte’s murder. That explanation pleased the courts.
Jack awaits in his padded cell, desperate for someone to believe the dark things he saw trying to cross over into this world.

NEEDS: To be the biggest person in the room
HOPES: To be filthy rich someday
FEARS: That you’re going to rob him
VOICE PROFILE: Boston accent. Gruff and tough voice. Somehow always sounds lewd or angry.
BACKGROUND:
Henry always had a mind for business, selling lemonades at a calculated mark-up. His father made sure to teach him about the value of a dollar and how the world was full of people trying to snatch yours. So he had a healthy distrust of people and an in-built drive to make money every day.
Henry met a young William Kane in business school. Their friendship eventually materialized a textile company split 50/50 between them, which saw great success in the early 1940s. However things turned difficult after WW2. William was convinced the business would pick up again, but Henry wanted to take the business into a new direction. Their disagreement had no chance to resolve before William’s death, which left Henry with full control of their company. In the eyes of a certain detective, that would certainly be sufficient motive for murder.

Hippolyte’s father was a boy in France when his parents emigrated across the Atlantic, bringing with them a flair for French names. As a boy Hippolyte used to be mocked all the time for it, and year after year he endured. But he kept a record in his mind of everyone who was ever cruel to him. One day when he was just starting off as a thug in a crime family with a modicum of power, he began putting the fear of God into each of those names one by one.
People have a tendency to underestimate Hippolyte for his high voice, but they miss his dead uncaring eyes. His work proved itself. In the present he runs all bets from the Hippodrome for his crime family, wielding considerable power and oversight to ensure the smooth running of the business. He has a nose as well for who to lend money to – and who can be squeezed for a sickening interest rate. William Kane was one such person... until his untimely demise. Today Hippolyte will tolerate no insult. Want an easy ticket to die? Call him the nickname from his childhood. Call him ‘Hippo’.

WANTS: To have everything in its right place
NEEDS: To not be around chaos

FEARS: Being destitute, homeless, alone, and hated
VOICE PROFILE: General American accent. Soft voice, firm tone and hand. Never lowers her head.
BACKGROUND:
Originally from Boston, Patricia moved east with her husband to be nearer to his parents when they fell ill. She mainly worked hospitality jobs in her youth before encountering William and Charlotte Kane, who offered her a job at their mansion. They recognised her diligent, exacting nature in keeping things in order, even if it did feel a tad strict. It was just her nature, ever since she was a child. Charlotte in particular was favoured by Patricia, because it was Charlotte’s hand on the reigns that kept the Kane family steady.
Charlotte’s death hit Patricia hard, but out of loyalty to her memory she stayed with William even after he lost all the money, sold the house, and moved to a smaller home. Patricia even stayed when William failed to pay her for months. However she would have endured all of it were it not for William suddenly firing her without any notice whatsoever. Patricia had imagined herself part of their family, and yet here she had a door slammed in her face. So she began to bear a grudge.

NEEDS: To have time alone away from people
HOPES: To spend all his days among plants
FEARS: Being in a crowd of hateful strangers
VOICE PROFILE: General American accent. Soft-spoken, gentle voice. Always a bit anxious talking to others.
BACKGROUND:
Growing up in Brooklyn, Samson found loyal companionship only within nature. While the boys and girls his age chased each other, he never saw the point. Spending all his time reading about and working with plants gave him a valuable green thumb, establishing him as an intuitive, dependable, fast-working gardener who never called in sick.
The Kanes hired Samson’s biweekly services through a recommendation from a friend, and he’s been a fixture of their house ever since. The gardens of the old mansion were large and lavish, a pure delight for Samson to tend. So much so he offered to work at a lower rate. But Charlotte Kane insisted on paying him what he was worth. When Charlotte died and William moved to a much smaller property, Samson still tended the house’s modest green space.
Samson’s earnest nature and skill with plants has earned him quite a reputation amongst the rich. The Hippodrome pays him handsomely to tend their grounds. And to ensure his services to the city, the mayor even gave him a nice office in the city’s botanic garden and established a monthly stipend in addition to payment per job. Samson, too honest for his own good, hates this however, and sends the money back to the city. If a certain detective fails to look deep enough at these records, it will look like Samson is bribing the mayor for a fancy office. But this is false.

GAME ROLE: NPC, Friend to Howard
TRAITS: Assertive, Patient, Smart, Observant
WANTS: To get the job done on his own terms
NEEDS: To drown out the loneliness

FEARS: Being outed and ostracized for it
VOICE PROFILE: General American + very light Southern accent. Gentle, relaxed, can be playful.
BACKGROUND:
Originally from South Carolina, Logan remembered when the USA entered the fold during World War I. Too young for the draft, too old to be shielded from it. It was in those teenage years that he took a good long look at himself and stopped wasting time denying who he was. But the world was not a kind place for gay men. Though he would find fleeting romances in the secret places of the Big Apple, Logan decided that he needed to find something else to pour himself into. And few things demanded more of a person than a career in the police force.
He was a career cop well in his 40s when the Second World War came. Not one to shirk from duty, he enlisted. That was his whole life. Nothing but work. As the years wore him down, he had a chance encounter with a young veteran named Howard Larson who seemed a lost soul. Having no children of his own, Logan helped Howard get back on his feet. He sensed a good heart in the man.
Today Logan is no longer a stickler for procedure. He knows the spirit behind every rule in the book, and it’s that spirit he serves. And if some things take a bit longer, so what? He’s old, only fools rush in, and he’ll make sure it gets done. To help his friend, Logan has brought Howard on to police cases before, in particular those that are complicated or strange like occult-related cases. The whole thing creeps Logan out. He has no idea of the abyss Howard is circling around.
