The Man In The Mist [Indie Animated Series]

The Man In The Mist [Indie Animated Series]

Project Overview

Hello everyone! I was looking for writers to help with my Indie Animation Series Project of mine! You will be paid hourly! I've had a lot of help in the other departments but I was looking for writers to check over and help write for the story I have so far so I can finalize the story with confidence. I have been the only writer so I wanted other writers to possibly write ideas and keep things consistent in the story. I was planning on 13 episodes for this series and I was feeling hesitant with me being the only writer so I wanted to bring a few more writers in before I start finalizing anything. The animation and music will be similar to older disney animation and more detailed so I was getting anxious being the only person writing for the story due to all of the amazing skilled artists in this project. I didn't want all of the art to look like a genuine tv show and animation then the story ended up not being as great... It might just be me needing some confidence in my story writing but I feel bringing a few other writers into the process will hopefully improve the story even more. I always find things become so much better when you collaborate with other people.
"The Man In The Mist" Is actually the name of the short film/first scene of the first episode but I was looking for help with writing the whole season or ideas for the show. Here is a description of the project if you would be interested in helping being a writer for this project!

The project is an indie animated series with a tone and pacing inspired by older films, like classic Disney. I want the series to take its time with scenes and focus deeply on character driven storytelling. With more serious themes like depression, belonging, and trying to find meaning in small everyday moments.
While the central conflict may involve magical storms, cryptids, and the paranormal, the heart of the story is really about a group of kids from different ages and backgrounds forming genuine, and meaningful connections as they grow and face their own personal struggles. They all live in the same apartment building so a lot of chaos happens throughout the series and they have lots of time to bump into each other or dragged around and form their friendship.

The series is a psychological horror/thriller indie animated project, with a vibe similar to "Don't Walk Home Alone After Dark" youtube channel or Gravity Falls and Over the garden wall. A mix of dark, silly, and deeper themes with supernatural elements and magical storms In the town of “Graywindle” Rural Kansas.

One of the biggest themes for this story comes from a concept I've noticed that I like to call the “Rudolph problem" in some media nowadays.
(rudolph the red nosed reindeer)
A lot of underdog stories have someone rejected for being different, only for everyone to accept them once their difference becomes useful. I want to explore the harmful idea someone can take from that. “I am different. People will only love me if I prove I’m useful.” I always wondered why in those stories they had to prove their worth in the first place.

The main character of this series struggles heavily with this. They’re quiet, (they rarely speak the whole series) unusual, and often feels unseen. When they end up moving to this new town and they have a chance to join this new group of kids, they become determined to prove they deserve to be there. Some of the group’s connections are superficial at first but they grow into real friendships over time in the series. The other main character is the leader of this group. They have been trying to keep the whole group together in the meantime. They have a similar insecurity from the opposite direction.
He’s a bubbly adventurous 10 year old obsessed with cryptids and mysteries.
He constantly creates adventures and tries to make things fun to convince the other older kids to come along because he worries they might stop hanging out with him otherwise and leave the group. He genuinely is cheerful and energetic, but he also uses that energy to avoid uncomfortable feelings.

The story also tries to be realistic about disability, mental health, isolation, and being different. Society doesn’t always suddenly become accommodating, and not everyone will understand or help.
Sometimes support can come from a small group of people, but sometimes relationships require people to try and meet each other halfway. Life can still be hard even with those support systems and some people are unlucky and not have them at all.

Our main character only stays in the town for a few months with the others. Relationships don’t have to last forever to be meaningful. Even a connection that only exists for a short part of your life can matter deeply.

I always had crazy dreams as a kid where these giant storm clouds would roll in really fast and I always felt dread knew crazy things were about to happen when I saw them. It was a strong feeling. I decided to inspire this series based off those dreams. Those looming magic storm clouds in the horizon.

There is a main plot to this story. After the main character moves into the town, a magical storm starts up preventing anyone from leaving. The main plot of this story has the kids trying to figure out how to stop these storms while encountering a local legend "the man in the mist" as they try to solve the mystery of where the storms come from, if they can stop them, and how to stop the giant magical storm and "the great flood" from happening again like it did in the past and the creatures that came from it.

I wanted to concentrate on the “before” and “after” of paranormal adventures then just the adventures themself. Especially how realistically people may react to those type of situations and cope with them.

I only needed writers at the moment. I might open another casting call in the future for voice actors or maybe a few extra roles if needed but I mostly needed help with fixing up the writing process at the moment.

I would have added more pictures to the project here but that is a premium feature of CCC. I do have this google drive full of a few images though if you would like some vibes of the project a bit. Just to show that there is progress on this series and that it's legit. There isn't a crazy amount of concept art yet on the final areas due to me wanting to finalize the story first. This will end up being a show looking similar to over the garden wall and gravity falls but instead with a more grainy and detailed style.

It would be really fun to work with other people on this! I was also planning to do a kickstarter in the future to help fund it too but for now I was looking for writers that could help write with me. I will probably message you personally if I am interested in working with you since I may pick more then one writer. I'll probably ask extra follow up questions too. I will probably only pick a select few writers though.

Im looking for people to join the writing team for this project! To help write for the story and finalize the characters and episodes with me. I have been struggling writing/finalizing the series myself so I wanted some advice from possibly other writers to hopefully improve the story. Mostly writing for the indie series itself from what I already have so far. I was planning to do something similar to a "writing room" where the writer/writers talk to eachother in real time like in a zoom call or similar situation where we bounce around ideas for the project.

I'd prefer people who actually seem interested in this type of story genre and the type of writing typical for an animated series and seem interested in the series description. I think it'd be awkward if we were in a call together and it wasn't the type of story you enjoy writing. This is a genuine indie series thats animated that I am making. I already have character designers, musicians and a lot of the "visual" development already starting. I have been the only one working on the story though. I have been struggling to find writers and anyone willing to go in zoom calls with me and fix the story a bit since I really want this story to be the best it can be, so I thought I might try CCC to see if I can find anyone here. Vibes similar to gravity falls and over the garden wall. But with a more serious tone to the series. A character driven series. The pacing of the story would be similar to Stranger Things "season one".
You do not have to be a total "professional" in story writing. I'm more looking for people who can help write story ideas and about characters and work with what I have. I'm planning for 13 episodes. I'd rather have fun coming up with silly ideas together then super "serious business" vibes some projects do. I'd want the other writers to have fun too. I also had some story notes and structures and methods we could try so I'm more looking for people who can help bring creative ideas to the project. It would be helpful to have writing experience in the past though so if you have examples that will be helpful!
Discord would be recommended.

I decided to give this section a try.
I was looking possibly for a Co-director/Production Scheduler. I tend to struggle keeping myself on schedule and I thought having a Co-director/Production Scheduler may help me. Someone that can keep me organized and talk with me about the projects and people to contact and keep the project on schedule. We would probably have to discuss together often to figure out what the project needs at the time. I'm not sure the exact word for this job but I would just need you to make sure you keep me on schedule and help us actually do what I was hoping to do and stick to the schedules I made for the project and myself.
Yes I need this. Help.
This would help take a big mental load off myself so I can concentrate on other important things in the project. It's easy to forget some of the smaller things or parts on the schedule when I have to keep track of every different department in the project so that's why it might be nice to have someone who keep us organized and actually hit the goals we want. Perhaps daily or weekly and making sure what was on the schedule each day gets done.
I have been off schedule for the past half year, and the past year before that I was distracted by things so I realized I genuinely need someone that can help do this.
I didn't write an actual wage here since it may be complicated and depend on what we are doing but perhaps we could discuss paying by "month/week" for this role. You guys can offer a wage you are comfortable with or if you are interested in helping with this and you think you fit the job description we could discuss together everything. If you think you are organized and know a bit enough about the animation process and have time to create/make sure we stick on schedule with me then maybe a job like this might work for you?
