Bio: The Main Man and the eponymous hero of the Franchise who appears in all 4 of the Main Super Mario Stories here (and a good portion of the shorts). In the Super Mario Bros stories he is the Heroic Denizen & Protector of the Mushroom Kingdom while in the Super Mario Land stories he comes out of the Gameboy into the real world to pursue Tatanga to save Princess Daisy from his clutches. While Mario is of course the same guy in both series’ his personality does somewhat differ between the Super Mario Bros. and the Super Mario Land stories.

While these comics came out well before Nintendo played up Luigi’s “Cowardly Lion” persona even then Luigi is often more cautious than his elder brother Mario. (Although Luigi does have his more foolhardy moments as well and in these comics he does have some trolling tendences too.)

Bio: The Teenage Daughter of the Monarch of the Mushroom Kingdom and is well known as the frequent victim of Bowser’s kidnapping plots. In the Valiant Comics she is normally seen with her retainer Toad and our hero Mario who is normally around as her Bodyguard (also babysitter). Peach often tries to be the more mature voice of reason as she does care a lot about her father and friends even though she has scolded them for various reasons (particularly her father). In fact to play up her status as “Voice of Reason” in the Super Mario Shorts she even has a “Dear Princess Toadstool” which is basically a “Ask Amy”-esque Advice Column.

Bio: The Main Big Bad of the Super Mario Bros series who is the Lord of the Koopa Kingdom who has been trying to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom (and in later games try to get Princess Toadstool to wed him). Bowser loves to play up his Villainous Image in various ways as he frequently makes various plots against the Mushroom Kingdom in which Mario and friends thwart at every turn. But while Bowser does enjoy his evil overlord job & persona he does care about certain people such as his children, the Koopalings (even though their antics often drive him crazy).

While the King is generally a kind & benevolent ruler and loving father to Peach but he is also well known as a buffoonish overweight klutz. (Who has done strange things like have his tie stuck in Peanut Butter jars.) While he is often seen as a cheerfully inept fool he can be capable in certain tasks such as gardening and can be serious (& temperamental) if the situation calls for it.

Bio: The Big Bad of the original Super Mario Land and is the Big Bad in almost all of the comics in the GB series. Tatanga is a powerful warlord with a large army of monsters who is the conqueror of Sarasaland but is also eager to conquer various other worlds as well. Though in the Game Boy/Super Mario Land comic series he enters the real world by doing a mindlink with Herman Smirch and has a tight psychological grip on Herman as he uses him as a tool to enter the real world via a Gameboy Screen. Also in the Super Mario Land comic stories he has Princess Daisy as his prisoner but is also madly in love with her and wants to have her to be his bride. (Even if it means showing a little mercy & kindness to others every now & then.) But Daisy is the only one who he truly cares for as he finds humans like Herman & Tannis and the like occasionally necessary but otherwise disposable.

Bio: Tatanga’s right-hand man who has loyally served under Tatanga during his attempts to invade the real world. (Though he tries to be the Big Bad in the 3rd story in this series when Tatanga is unavailable.) While Pionpi is quite eager to sing his praises about his Master Tatanga often to the point of being a suck-up he is also quite eager to eliminate anyone who stands in Tatanga’s way such as Mario. Though while Pionpi is quite loyal to Tatanga he is often the first to deem the humans that Tatanga uses to be disposable such as Herman Smirch for example.

Bio: The most prominent original character in the Super Mario Land comic stories as he appears in all 4 of the stories here as Tatanga uses his mind-link powers to use Herman to gain access to the real world. While in his debut story Herman is depicted as a smug, self-righteous middle-aged man in New York working at the Cash Register at an Electronics Store in the Wonder World mall who would rudely mouth off to anyone he finds bothersome but would backpedal quickly if confronted. However all of this would change when Tatanga uses him and his Game Boy to open a portal to the real world in which Tatanga forces him to be his servant. After the first Super Mario Land story Herman goes increasingly insane as he tries to evade Tatanga’s efforts in finding him but they never work and Tatanga forces him to be his slave again. So in other words from the 2nd Super Mario Land comic story onward he becomes a lot more erratic, paranoid and kind of unhinged (but he does occasionally show a kinder side as well).

Bio: Josh’s brother who was with Josh at the Wonder World Mall when the Tatanga Incident occurred. While not too long before this story begins Josh was a Baseball Player and loved Video Games but recently he was starting to put those aside as he tries to think of himself as a Smooth Ladies Man and would occasionally tease his brother Josh for being a dork who still plays Video Games. However during the Tatanga Incident especially when Mario shows up Rick does realize that he shouldn’t give up his gamer ways as he tries to keep his brother Josh and himself safe.

Bio: The initial child of this Comic Series who uses a Gameboy to get Mario into a portal in SarasaLand in Super Mario Land to the real world so Mario can save the day. Josh is a bright young man who is an avid Video Game player and while Rick went to the Wonder World mall to try to hit on the ladies Josh went to the mall to try to buy Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES. While Josh & Rick did drift apart a bit at first since Rick is trying to be a Ladies Man instead of a game player. But the brothers did patch things up fairly quickly over the course of Tatanga’s invasion of the mall. Josh is very eager to aid Mario in his fight against Tatanga as he was very brave (even a bit foolhardy) against Tatanga’s forces. But while he is quite eager to do what’s right, Rick was a lot more cautious and has tried to make sure that Josh doesn’t get too reckless.

Bio: This 11-year old young lady is the 2nd child in the series to get Mario to a portal out of the Game Boy to the real world to face Tatanga’s crew. (Though unlike the aforementioned young man above she is not great at Video Games and had to get help from her sister via phone-line.) Anyways this young lady Tannis was going on a plane-ride to Florida to see her Grandmother and she has dreams to one day be an astronaut when she grows up. However the plane she goes on just happens to be the same plane that Tatanga and his forces hijacked. But when Tatanga complains about the airplane being too slow Tannis brings up the Space Shuttle and how fast it is. In which this causes Tatanga to use his forces to abandon the plan and go after the shuttle instead and get her to be his second “Human Servant” after Herman Smirch. While Tannis is normally a brave young girl there were times where she was losing hope but fortunately something good happens to lift her spirits up.

Bio: Tannis’ sister who is an avid game player and is rarely seen without her Game Boy playing Super Mario Land. While she was first seen as completely disinterested in her sister Tannis’ airplane trip to Florida as she was more fixated on playing Super Mario Land on her Game Boy. However later on in the story she along with their mother were concerned with Tannis’ well being as Tannis calls them on a Phone Line from NASA through the Space Shuttle in which Rebecca helps her sister out to get Mario into the portal to the Real World. Though later on in the story is seen promptly worried sick about her daughter Tannis as Tannis manages to reach her and Rebecca by phone from the Space Shuttle via NASA.

After when Herman tries to explain to his mother what is going on his mother quickly notices how erratic and unhinged her son is becoming and tells him that he should get rid of that Game Boy and vows to come over to see him. While Herman hangs up to the phone on her before she could finish he does listen to her advice and just get rid of the Game Boy.
