summer haze/glory days

summer haze/glory days

Project Overview

Return to the summer of 2007...

Once somewhat of a local legend in their hometown, Mallory turned down a record deal in favour of a scholarship a decade ago. To say that they felt a bit of regret would be an understatement; they spent the bulk of their university years watching their former band mates sell out shows and records, stewing in bitterness the whole time.

After several years of rejected demos and struggling, they've finally gotten a second chance in their grasp — only to question whether it's something they even want anymore.

Project & Team Information

Hello and thank you for your interest! This is a casting call for summer haze/glory days, a visual novel that is currently in development by Yam Harvest Games. The demo will be coming out later this year. If you would like to see an example of a previous title with voice acting from the studio, you can check it out here.

Casting decisions will be made by Yam (he/they), the developer, and Kristi Hoi (any pronouns), a writer-director. We look forward to hearing from you!

Casting Call Information

Available Roles

We are casting for 5 lead characters, 4 supporting characters, and 2 minor characters, all detailed below. Please note that we will be casting multiple voice actors for the player character, Mallory, to allow for choice in the game’s character creation system.

Additionally, if you’re interested in providing voices for unseen extras throughout the game (paid at the same rate), please mention it when submitting your audition.

▶ Payment

• The game will feature partial voice acting, with short phrases, words, or sounds (laughs, sighs, etc).

• Payment will be calculated at the rate of 75¢ per line, rounded up — please see under each individual character sheet for specific line counts, word counts, and total payment amounts. (Please note that word counts may change slightly due to script revisions. If there are any major changes due to revisions, we will adjust the payment accordingly. We will inform you before recording if this happens.)

Payment will be done through PayPal.

▶ Guidelines

• Auditions can be submitted here or by email.

• Please send us the unedited raw audio in .wav format, leaving ~2 seconds of silence at the end of your audition so that we can assess the noise levels in your recording environment.

• ⭐ Name audition files in the format of “CharacterName_YourName.wav”. ⭐ (This is really helpful as we download the files submitted here on CCC and through email to organise in our own folders to review together. While we do rename any incorrectly named auditions when downloading, it's much appreciated if they're already named properly, and it reduces the chances of us missing that audition or not knowing who to attribute it to. Thanks!)

Please only submit an audition if you are 18 or older as we will require you to sign a release form if selected for a role.

• If you are auditioning for multiple characters through email, please send all files in one email.

▶ Direction

• In general, we’re looking for more understated, down-to-earth deliveries on the lines. Summer Haze/Glory Days is a slice-of-life story where there isn’t too much action, so we don’t need particularly exaggerated or dramatic performances.

• While we’ve included home cities, states, or provinces in some of the character descriptions, we aren’t specifically looking for regional accents and for the most part standard American or Canadian is fine. It’s just some extra information you can work in if you feel like it would suit your interpretation of the character!

▶ Content Warnings

The game includes mentions of the following topics: alcohol use, substance use, mental illness, and the death of a loved one. Several characters also use strong language, which are in some of their voice lines.

Process

▶ Deadlines

March 3rd, 2024: Auditions end (EOD EST)

March 10th, 2024: Selections will be made

April 10th, 2024: Lines are due

▶ What to Expect

• If you are selected for a role, you will be contacted by March 10th.

• From that date, you’ll have 2 days to accept or decline the role.

• On acceptance, you’ll receive a release form to sign and return to us. You’ll also be asked for supplementary information to use in cast announcements and credits.

• Once you’ve signed the release form, we’ll send you your character’s lines in a PDF.

• You’ll have until April 10th to record and get your lines to us. If you need an extension for whatever reason, just let us know.

• When sending us your lines, please send them all in one unedited .wav file, with at least 2 takes per line, leaving 5-10 seconds of silence at the end for noise reduction.

• We will pay you through PayPal upon receiving the lines, unless there are any major issues.

• And of course, if you’d like to keep up with the project, just let us know. We can send you updates on trailers/release dates and provide you with download keys so you can see how everything turned out!

Thank you for your interest in our project, and we look forward to hearing your auditions!

Latest Updates

  • Selections made!

Thank you very much to everyone who took the time to audition, we really appreciate all the interest in the project!

Selections have now been made for the cast of summer haze/glory days. We were very surprised by the amount of auditions, and deciding on the final cast list was an incredibly difficult decision.

If you'd still like to keep up with the project, we'll be posting updates and the full cast announcements on Twitter (@yamharvest).

  • Casting call closed, thank you!

Thank you to everyone who has auditioned for this project! We received an overwhelming amount of auditions which we're very grateful for, and it's been exciting to hear all the different interpretations of the characters. Please note that although the characters now show that they've been "cast offsite", this isn't the case and we're still going through all the submissions. We'll be spending this week making our decisions, and we aim to let selected actors know by March 10th.

  • New Roles Added

Thanks so much for the interest in our project so far! Just as a note, we've decided to add the previously unlisted minor characters to the casting call as well, in case anyone would prefer to audition for them directly. Looking forward to hearing from you!

After years of hard work, Mal has finally gotten everything they want: their band, No Prospects, landed a coveted spot on the 2007 Friends and Foes summer tour, and their single has been getting some major play on the radio. So they should finally be happy, right?

Late 20s. Confident, charming, and perhaps just a little self-absorbed. No specific pitch or gender – as Mal’s appearance and identity is customisable by the player, we're looking for 2-4 voices of any gender for this role in order to provide options at character creation.

Slight Canadian accent. Originally from a small town in southern Ontario, but moved to New York at the age of 18. (Despite their claims to “not have an accent”, it is noted by their bandmates that they definitely still do – especially when they say “sorry”.)

Line count: 60 (107 words/9 effort sounds)

※ Please note that 2 of the actors selected for Mal will also have an additional 3-4 lines for the game’s trailer. Payment for the extra lines will be added onto the total above at the rate of $1 per line.

  • “Do you need me to hold your hand? There are easier ways to go about that, you know.” [Playful, but also slightly reprimanding. Teasing a friend who they’ve just pulled out of harm’s way.]

  • “Yeah no, I'm not that pushy. Am I? Say no, Beckett.” [Indignant, demanding, but a little self-conscious. They’ve just been called out on their behaviour, and they’re bullying Beckett – their long-suffering childhood friend – into taking their side in an argument.]

  • Please make several sounds: a laugh, a sigh, and a thinking sound.

The bassist of The Fractured, the current band that's on the playlist of everyone who's in-the-know. Most would consider his quiet and withdrawn nature ill-suited for the spotlight, so it's fortunate that he seems to get overshadowed by the rest of his group.

Mid 20s. Masculine. Soft-spoken and gentle, but has a slightly raspy quality to his voice that you might expect from a habitual chain-smoker.

International/any accent. (He was born in England, but his family moved countries often – pretty much every few years – while he was growing up. As such, he’s spent most of his life in various prestigious international schools.)

Line Count: 50 (98 words/8 effort sounds)

  • "Are you quite sure about that? Because I'm pretty confident that I just saw the No Prospects van driving off five minutes ago." [Blunt, deadpan, but also secretly a little amused. He’s offered a ride to Mal, who’s declined it in an attempt to act cool – despite them clearly having been ditched by their bandmates at a petrol station.]

  • "Friends, environments, languages — they were always changing. Outside of my family, the only constant in my life was music." [Thoughtful, slightly lonely. Talking about what led him to pursue his current career path.]

  • Please make several sounds: a laugh, a confused sound, and a surprised sound.

Mallory’s best friend from university who was dragged into No Prospects largely against her will. Despite her initial reluctance, ever-critical Di has since given her all in every single performance – and won’t hesitate to point out anyone she believes to be dead weight.

Late 20s. Feminine. Medium to low pitched voice. A born perfectionist and workaholic. Self-assured, cynical, and according to Lucas, "a bit of a party pooper". Has a biting sense of humour and a secret soft side that she only shows to her closest friends.

American accent. Born and raised in New York.

  • "Come on, dude. At least try to sound a little apologetic." [Slightly annoyed, but also slightly amused – she’s quite fond of the person she’s talking to, even if they’ve just splashed her with water.]

  • “This was disgustingly unprofessional. I don't know where your head is at lately, but this is still a job.” [Furious. Lecturing a bandmate who’s been partying a little too hard on tour to the point of interfering with everyone else’s work.]

  • Please make several sounds: a laugh, an annoyed sound, and a confused sound.

An old friend — and something of a role model — of Mallory's from their teenage basement show years. Having spent the past decade turning down permanent positions in favour of juggling odd jobs with occasional freelance session work, he surprised everyone when he joined No Prospects.

Early 30s. Masculine. Deep voice, calm and laid-back. Bit of a stoner, bit of a bro, and super easy to get along with.

Canadian accent.

  • “Yeah, no, for sure. This tour is very different to what we're used to, but in a good way. Happy to be part of it.” [Pleased, but laid-back and calm. Responding to an interviewer.]

  • “Sorry – what do you mean? I’m just sitting with a friend. Anyway, what are we listening to?” [Friendly, teasing, slightly concerned. Trying to cheer up Mal – the aforementioned friend who is currently sulking with their earbuds in – and get them to confide in him.]

A last minute addition to No Prospects after the abrupt departure of their previous guitarist, Lucas struggles to keep his head above water in a sea full of industry veterans. What he lacks in technical skill, he more than makes up for in pure enthusiasm – much to Mallory’s amusement and Di’s annoyance.

Mid 20s. Masculine. Excitable, friendly, and just a little bit awkward. Masks his insecurities with an outwardly cheerful and energetic persona.

American accent. From New Jersey.

Tired, overworked, and sleep-deprived, Kendra probably deserves a medal of some sort for keeping the whole band alive and on schedule. Unfortunately, most of the group seem to take her for granted.

Early 30s. Feminine. High pitched voice. Friendly and easy-going for the most part, but can easily shift into her more business-like persona at the drop of a hat.

The frontman of The Fractured, and the scene’s favourite cover boy of the moment. Despite his popularity and fame, he doesn’t let it get to his head and is genuinely a likeable, friendly guy who cares deeply for his bandmates as though they were his family.

Mid/Late 20s. Masculine. Teasing, playful, and just a little bit flirtatious. The quintessential 2000s alternative rock band frontman.

Open to any accent – he’s from an expat family and has been living in the US since he was a teenager.

Trying to get others to excuse a colleague’s unprofessional behaviour, but he does plan to deal with it on his own – he just doesn’t want to involve anyone else.]

The frontman of one of the biggest bands of the last decade – who also happens to be Mal’s former best friend and bandmate. He holds no grudge about whatever happened in the past, and even seems happy to run into Mal again on tour. Which, of course, just makes Mal feel worse about being so bitter all the time.

Late 20s. Masculine. Friendly, cheerful, and full of genuine confidence. He’s “made it” in life and doesn’t really feel the need to prove himself to anyone – the record sales and sold-out arena tours do all the talking for him.

An old friend of Mal’s – and Beckett’s sister – whom the two stop by to visit while on the road. Unlike everyone else in their old friend group who moved away in pursuit of stardom, Cecilia stayed in their hometown and became a “real adult”. Instead of working the merch table, she’s now managing a popular restaurant – and her unruly toddler son.

Late 20s. Medium to medium-high pitched voice. Down-to-earth and totally unpretentious. Snarky, quick-witted, and loves to poke fun at others – especially Mal.

  • "No, that's my great-grandpa Steve. What do you think, genius?" [Sarcastic, a little teasing. Mal has just asked “is that your kid?” in response to seeing a kid run up to her and call her “mom”.]
