Selective Dissonance: The Final Stretch

Selective Dissonance: The Final Stretch

Project Overview

We are here to find our cast for the last 4 Main Season episodes, as well as actors for our October Minisode Series.

There's a lot of potential roles so be sure to scroll thru! Note that because we are episodic and no two episodes are the same, compensation is based on various factors within the context of each individual episode.

We will only be considering Actors that are part of the community listed in the character description, for the roles available. Basically if you're white mixed with white, do not audition for a BIPOC character. This isn't that kind of show.

Hello all! It's been a crazy month but we have NOT forgotten about you! We are going to try and get messages out to people within the next week. We also will be making some big announcements this month over on our social media (@selectedharmony) and I hope at least some of you will appreciate it! Thank you so much for your auditions and sharing your talents with us. It means so much! - Shekendra, Head Honcho
  • Important additional information!

Hello all! I forgot to add this to this new casting call. Also be on the lookout for additional roles added throughout this week. Interested in experiencing horror from a different perspective? This podcast looks at horror through the lens of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities and thrives to give you original scares birthed through everyday experiences that may be sources of fear for those of us within those communities. This is a project put on by people who have had experience in the entertainment industry and wanted to do something creative during trying times. You do not have to have been published or in a well known project with millions of listeners, but you do have to have a professional attitude and willingness to deliver work on time. We also ask that anyone who signs on with the project, be willing to participate in patreon interviews where we will discuss everything from what made us passionate about horror, to why representation in entertainment and media is important, as well as participating in an online table read before recording so that all actors and the directors are on the same page when we go to record. When submitting please include a way for us to contact you, so that you don't miss out on being cast. Production will reach out via your preferred form of contact, and once a role has been accepted we will cast you on CCC.

The narrator is a single adult that suffers from mental illness. Actor should be able to lean into the narrator's feelings of anxiety, confusion, and listlessness.

Content Warnings: unreality, getting lost, sleeplessness, panic attacks, dissociation

  • Some people don’t like knowing their neighbors, and that’s fine. It just helps my anxiety to know when there’s a true stranger in the hallway, versus just my neighbor down the hall who doesn’t get out much.

  • I just kept staring into the painting. There were so many lines and corners and edges. Like stairs. Or hallways. Or doors. Or walls. Like a maze my eyes could follow, but never quite solve. Every time I felt like I was getting somewhere, I’d hit another dead end. But I couldn’t just give up and look away- I felt like I needed to finish the maze, to find the way out.

  • I can’t sleep. Every time I try, the hallways are right there, waiting to swallow me up. And when I open my eyes again, they’re closer, threatening to catch me even when I’m waking. I’m so tired- beyond tired. Exhausted. But I cannot sleep. No matter what I try, it will not let me sleep.

A white woman in her forties. Suburban Housewife.

Content Warnings: Disease, Pandemic/Outbreak Conditions, Suburbia-typical microaggressions (mild classism, racism, xenophobia), anti-vaccine mindset, pseudo-medical practices, death

  • They come from bad families, Ryan. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Cassie’s mom stopped coming to church when she married that hippie barista, and I don’t think Rico’s father ever worked a day in his life! You can’t hang around with people like that, honey- it’ll give you a bad reputation.

  • Ryan Jacob Collins, come back here. You haven’t finished your dinner!

(yelling after him) You better get your homework done! And you’re grounded for the rest of the month, young man! (she starts clearing the table, washing dishes angrily, Husband comes home.)

(suddenly happy) Dinner’s still in the oven, Jackie. How was work today, let me grab you a drink.

  • Oh, no no. It’s nothing like that- this is just a cold. You know, they keep (cough) getting stronger because all you people keep vaccinating and making them stronger. But it’s just a cold and nature will get me through.

  • Speaking of lazy good-for-nothing’s, did you hear about the ‘flu’ that’s going around the high school?

  • That’s… that’s why I’m here. I left work early- I really don’t feel so great. Jake really came down with something and I think I might have caught it. (coughing) Overworking, you know how it is

  • Today, six kids were missing from class! They all got sick. That’s two more than were sick yesterday. And I heard that Mrs. Helens, the math teacher? She wasn’t at school either.

  • Cassie’s moms are nice! They made us snacks for the movie so we wouldn’t have to pay for them there. And Mr. Hernandez is sick- he can’t work so he stays home to watch Rico’s little siblings. They’re not bad people…

  • (grimacing as he pours the water into his nose) Mom, please. Can we not argue right now? I don’t feel so good and I wanna sleep.

  • Right here, ma’am. Surgeon General’s orders, anyone who’s had contact with any confirmed cases needs to be checked for contamination. The more cases we catch, the quicker we can get you treated and back on your feet.

  • I see this all the time, Doc. No one ever expects it to happen to them, so when it does, they don’t believe it. They’ll find every excuse to close their eyes and ignore it, and once it really starts hitting them, it’s too late.

CW: descriptions of suffocation, whispering

The actor cast will need to showcase that they are able to differentiate between different characters while telling the story. Think of it as you regaling a colorful but complicated story to your friends and you want them to understand who said what without constantly saying "They said" or "She said" etc. Will not accept auditions in which offensive stereotypes are used for character voices.

Odessa Richards (Narrator)

  • Ariana’s girlfriend

  • Willing to stay overnight to protect Julien, but fully ready to ditch at any sign of trouble.

  • Calm, relatively collected voice.

  • Black - late teens to early 20s

Esther Knowles

  • Tells stories at sleepover about haunted house across town, says it's dangerous.

  • Julien’s older sister

  • Also thinks staying overnight is dumb but wants to watch her little brother.

  • Rougher, more gravelly voice as if tired all the time.

  • White - late teens to early 20s

Julien Knowles

  • Hyper fixation on stories Esther tells.

  • Esther’s younger brother

  • Suggests staying overnight / investigation.

  • More excited, energetic voice

  • White – 15-17 years old

Arianna Powell

  • Odessa’s girlfriend

  • More worried, cautious voice

  • Hispanic - late teens to early 20s

  • (Lines in quotes are spoken as Esther)

Their deaths had to be long and painful, but Esther was good at adding in little details she knew would draw her audience in.

“Investigators have gone in and spent the night,” she said, flashing her hands so suddenly it made Arianna jump next to me. I remember I had to pull her close and tell her it was just a story… “and they’ve heard footsteps, and heavy, wheezing breaths, right in their ear… Cries for help were recorded on EVP, with strangled, choking breaths.” She had Julien wrapped around her finger by that point, and I remember he had leaned in.

  • (Odessa) “I’ll go.” Right as I said it, I could feel Arianna tense up again. I looked down right as she looked up, but I couldn’t just let them get hurt.

    (Arianna) “No, Odess-”

Odessa) “I wanna just make sure they won’t get hurt, babe… I promise I won’t go inside. I’ll just stay in the car and-”

  • (the quoted line being spoken to Esther from across the room)

“I can’t stay in here, I’ll be in the car. I can’t… I just…” Knowing Esther wouldn’t leave Julien and having the keys in my pocket, I was good to just run. Tripping over my own feet, I just barely made it to the car, exhausted and out of breath. I unlocked it and climbed inside, struggling to think past the adrenaline…

  • The day my daughter went missing, she took everything I had left in my heart with her. The search was long and grueling, but I didn’t give up… or at least, I didn’t want to. After the police gave up their search two weeks in, I kept going on my own. Hundreds of dollars went into hiring a private investigator, search dogs, and I spent more time in the area she had last been seen than I had at home.

  • (First time talking to his daughter in over a year)

I looked over at Camille as she tilted her head, but I was too busy trying to get my words to work.

“Kiera! Kiera, honey, what’s- what’s going on, are you okay?” I couldn’t believe it. I could hear the smile in her voice, as if this was just any other day. She sounded older, her voice fuller and a slight bit raspier.

  • It was just my luck that the car was broken down the next day. I had been driving to work when something started to smoke, and I pulled over right as the sputtering started. I was lucky a woman pulled off the road to help me, and she drove me the rest of the way to work as the car was taken to the mechanic

  • It’s, uh, around 10:30 in the morning… Screaming was investigated. Boys went up and down the block knocking from door to door. Nothing. Nobody heard anything except a couple of the neighbors’ dogs were going nuts about something. I was a little worried it might’ve been the new neighbors getting into some little argument, but-

  • I saw him again this morning as I was getting ready for work. I’m pretty sure it’s him screaming or some shit, because this time I heard the scream coming from right in the backyard… And when I looked out, I saw him. Just standing and staring again. This time he just shook his head… real slow. I told him to fuck off again, and… And he just stared. I don’t know what the hell is up with this guy…

  • Yeah, actually. They are… Are you planning on telling me outright I’m a fucking suspect or are you just gonna be skirting around it until I tell you something you really wanna hear? And am I going to get an explanation on why you mentioned those tapes, or…?

  • Well, rest assured, I didn’t do shit. Condolences to his family, but for you to think I did this when I can’t even walk without assistance… That’s rich. You know, I’ve hoped and prayed, not to be mean, but I’ve pleaded to be the last thing on his mind at night, every night. I begged the universe for him to feel remorse for what he did to me. they/them

Any American accent

Jamie is growing up in a traditional household with an overbearing mother and attends a private Catholic school. Their mother expects them to be the perfect daughter, but Jamie identifies with neither of those things. As a result, they spend a lot of time ruminating in the mirror over these expectations, from both their mother, school, and society as a whole.

When Jamie leaves for college, they relish in their newfound freedom and find comfort in being themself. But something about the mirror still haunts them.

  • It’s time I stop trying to live up to my reflection. The next time I look in the mirror, I want to see myself

  • I’m still discovering who I am and dealing with people who won’t accept that, but my new friends are amazing. They don’t expect me to be anything other than myself. This is the first time in my life I’ve felt so validated.

  • What, and give up my life? My freedom? No way! I worked so hard to be who I am today. I’m finally starting to like myself. I’m starting to like what I see in the mirror.

Menacing, non human, desperate for its own form of freedom.

  • I deserve to be in your place. I can give mother everything she wants. Take all of that pressure off of your feeble little shoulders. You don’t need to worry about disappointing your family.
