RWBY: REMNANTS Casting Wave 2 [JNPR, Penny, also recruiting co-writer]

Project Overview

Note: This is an Alternate Universe, so some characters are different from their official portrayals and the plot is vastly detached from canon events. As such, any talent not familiar with RWBY are still welcome to try out for roles! There are also many roles requiring non-American accents, so if you know someone who can provide an authentic accent to a role, point them here!

RWBY: REMNANTS is a fan Alternate Universe of the online animation RWBY, a project which has garnered a decent showing of 300,000 total views on YouTube and counting. Here is the catalogue of all content of REMNANTS so far, to give you an idea of this production's content. The story is set in a world called Remnant, where characters based after fairy tales and mythology enroll into Hunter Academies to become the next generation of warriors against a tide of monstrous creatures called the Grimm.

REMNANTS is a re-imagining of the world of Remnant and Team RWBY's journey, told through nonlinear videos with original illustrations accompanied by music and voice acting, each new update offering a new glimpse into the lives of the cast that the viewer must piece together. The video format is similar to an illustrated audiobook or fandub comic.

All the artwork and video production will be done by myself, SYTOkun, but solid VA work, sound design and writing is needed to bring the characters to life. Currently Team RWBY, STRQ and others were already casted in the first audition wave, but I am still looking for other roles to fill for future planned videos.

The intent of this casting is to paint a more colourful world in the varied cultures and tales in Remnant that these characters are based on. I would like to capture the essence of these existing characters and take a new spin on them through the art of voice acting, adding new layers of depth and interesting quirks to them through the influence of our own world's unique cultures. This would obviously make the casting process a fair bit tougher as not many non-American VAs use CCC who would be able to lend their authentic native accent to the role, so I ask for your help in reaching any VAs you know who may be able to lend their voices to this project.

Even if your accent is not what is listed, you are more than welcome to audition. Capturing the personality of the character is equally important and something I also heavily consider when casting, so don't let that discourage you from auditioning! If you're not familiar with an accent, I highly recommend that you prioritise an authentic performance over an accurate accent. Don't force yourself into an unnatural performance, as that will dilute both the authenticity of the accent and your own performance.

This project is currently unpaid, however I do have a Patreon set up for my channel and I intend to start compensating my teammates for their continued hard work. As such, please prioritise yourself, your time and finances first before auditioning, and only audition if this project or a role interests you enough to lend your skills. Whatever I can't compensate with monetarily, I do make an effort to step up in other ways - whether to promote your work, giving one-to-one feedback or to create a friendly working environment.

AUDITION DEADLINE

The current deadline is April 15th. Depending on the role, I may cast some roles earlier than others, and given the specific casting criteria, I will extend the deadline if I feel I have not found the right voice for a character or am choosing between multiple candidates - so if you are really interested in a role but want to make more time, just let me know by messaging me on CCC and I can extend the deadline by a few days to help you at least get your audition out there!

GUIDELINES FOR AUDITIONERS

Please submit clean recordings with minimal background noise. There are usually multiple characters in each video, and I need consistent audio quality between all of them.

For auditioning, you can have as many takes as you wish. 1-3 takes per line at most is fine, though I recommend more lines if you're confident in expressing the same line in different ranges or tones.

I don't normally ask for retakes, but I do have a clear idea of the results I'm looking for. Please do not hesitate to ask me for feedback or specific directions upfront - I will gladly oblige you and offer you feedback.

For the co-writer role, the role is explained more extensively in the audition description below.

WHAT TO EXPECT ONCE CASTED

Voice actors and contributors for a video will be credited fully at the end of each video and in the description, and will see their voiced character illustrated in one of the REMNANTS videos.

We communicate through Discord, as that is where I am most active. There is a server for my channel and a private one for just the team. Nonetheless, I don't mind reaching you another way (email, CCC, etc.) as I will only be communicating when I need something voice acted for a script I have.

I make sure that the VA for the role is available before going ahead with any script, and will rotate/adjust my updates depending on who is most available to record for that update.

VAs are normally given 5-10 days as a soft deadline whenever a script is given, while I go ahead and draw the artwork needed for the video. It can likely be more than a week depending on how much there is to draw, but having the voice lines ready for editing when I need them helps a lot.

Do be aware that once you are casted, you may not receive work until I write the script for a video that stars that character, so please be patient with me!

ABOUT THIS A.U. (FOR RWBY FANS)

  • The fundamental lore and setting is greatly different from canon (origin of Dust, Faunus, the Kingdoms, etc.). For example, some characters originally from Mistral (Nora, Pyrrha) now hail from Atlas, which is significantly changed geographically.

  • Many of the characters will have clear, non-American accents. Given the diverse cultures and mythologies that inspire Remnant's characters, I want to emphasise that variety in the voices of the cast.

  • The tone is somewhat darker, and will explore certain mature themes associated with the characters, such as death and family legacy, but will also have lots of cute and wholesome character moments. It's intended for a 16+ audience and as such will have stuff like profanity said by characters in moments of stress or emotion.

  • All Beacon students in REMNANTS are aged up one year, making Beacon more akin to a college. Yang would be 18 years old, Ruby would be 16 years old, etc.

  • The Great War does not take place in this timeline, and instead is replaced by the Great Siege - a massive worldwide Grimm invasion that nearly destroyed the Kingdoms. The Great Siege will be mentioned a lot in the character descriptions and audition lines below.

Thank you for reading, and have a great day!

  • First Half Casting Done [Roman, Nora, Co-Writer]

Congratulations to some of the newly casted roles! In the case of Roman, it was a tough choice as they were a good number of really expressive and charismatic performances all around, particularly from Crit_Magnet, Amilanthior, thecelticphoenix and FlakVA whose performances I'd like to highlight. In the end, I found Caboose's performance to have the balance I was looking for - not too entirely identical to the official performance to draw immediate comparison, but still evoking the charisma, but also the familial gentleness I was aiming for this character in his interactions with Neo. I really enjoyed all the Nora performances! I've decided on ParallelDimension for the role as it had a perfect combination of a rough brashness but also a kind of girly softness. Nora in particular is one of those interesting characters whose extremely feminine traits are contrasted by her crazy and boisterous weapon and fighting style, so this was a mix that I wanted to come through in the voice work as well. For the co-writer position, I've reviewed and corresponded a great deal with a lot of the candidates through dialogue, and have decided to take on Dazco! Congratulations! I am already quite close to my casting decisions for Jaune and Penny, but will need a few days to mull over the choice, as well as with Ren and Pyrrha. Thank you for those of you who have auditioned so far and good luck!
  • New Role: Roman Torchwick

A new role has been added for audition: Roman Torchwick: a suave, cunning crime boss and thief who will be an early antagonist to the heroes. Accent: Common American or English.

Description: Penny Polendina [pen-nee pole-en-dee-nah] in REMNANTS is an orphaned child from the Great Siege. As part of the New Shelter refugee program, she was taken in by the Kingdom of Vale and given an apprenticeship in the Vale national archives, under the tutelage of archivist and Beacon's deputy headmistress, Glynda Goodwitch. The Great Siege left Penny with an injury that cost her her arms, and she now uses a pair of prosthetic wooden hands.

Naturally curious and innocent, Penny is a very sweet girl who is largely sheltered and doesn't know much at all about the world around her except for what she reads in books. While normally very energetic and expressive with her words and body, Penny is self-conscious about her prosthetics, especially around strangers, and struggles with feeling that she's "a little bit less whole" since her injury.

Penny is based on the tale of Pinocchio, originally written by Italian author Carlo Collodi.

Voice: Penny has a youthful voice towards a higher pitch. She has a certain decidedly stilted way of speaking her words. This is hard to describe without offering examples from her officially dubbed performance in both English and Japanese. Penny lacks an understanding of social cues and often takes words too literally. She tends to sometimes choose unusual words when speaking to others and notices unusual things that others don't.

I would like to explore a Penny with a slight Italian accent, while maintaining her friendly, innocent nature. How subtle or thick this accent is, if any, is up to you.

  • [greeting Ruby, a new friend she made a few days ago; stumbling upon her in the library.]

[cheerful and excited] "Ah, Ruby! It is so wonderful to see you again! How was Beacon? Did you get to go on any missions? I would like--"

[realises she's being too loud in the library, she lowers her voice] "Oh... shhh! *short laugh* I would like to know more about your day! Shall we talk about it somewhere else?"

  • [Working with her mentor Glynda, sorting out the archives and library and recording information in books. She sounds cheerful despite talking about a negative situation]

"Yes, about twelve books overdue... two from here and one from here... Yes, you were correct Ms. Glynda, none of them have been returned in any timely manner whatsoever!"

[She notices Glynda is very much upset about the overdue books.]

"Yes, I do agree that overdue books are very bad... but if I borrowed a book and haven't given it back, all while knowing Ms. Glynda would surely come after me... that must mean I must really love that book! Is this... untrue?"

  • [Penny is fighting someone trying to hurt Ruby. Her voice is firm and determined.]

    "Leave my friend alone!"

[She holds the attacker off while telling Ruby to head to safety.]

"Do not worry Ruby. They will not get past me! I am more than well-equipped for the task!"

Description: Jaune Arc [jhaw-n ahrk] is a son of the Arc family, a once prestigious knightly order within Vale's nobility, who have fallen into obscurity since the Great Siege. The Arc family fought valiantly in the events of the Great Siege, but the Dark Tide crippled them, causing them to lose prominence in Vale despite their sacrifices, pushing them into obscurity. This led to the disillusioned Arc family to live out the rest of their days in the shadow of their past glory, content to resign themselves to a blissful peace, closing their eyes to their future in fear of losing what little they have left.

Jaune, inspired by the deeds of his ancestors, was discouraged by his parents to pursue a life as a Hunter - constantly told to be happy with the little they have. Unsatisfied, this pushes him to enroll into Beacon by himself, albeit with no experience or combat prowess whatsoever. Jaune starts as the loser/underdog of Beacon Academy. He fights with a simple sword and shield, an heirloom passed down by his ancestor who fought in the Great Siege.

Jaune is based on the legend around the historical figure, Joan of Arc.

Voice: While goofy and often the butt of jokes, he's a hard worker and a loyal ally, and when it comes to leading or fighting for others, he doesn't hesitate. Jaune has a "protagonist" type voice, though with a noticeable nasal quality to it that lends itself to his initial portrayal as a goofball trying to stumble his way, surrounded by way stronger peers. His voice needs to be versatile enough for comedic, serious and emotional scenes while still sounding like him, keeping in mind his voice would mature and become more confident in himself as time goes on.

  • [confused and flustered, trying to find his luggage before entering the Academy]

"Wh-what do you mean my luggage isn't here?! There... there must be some kind of misunderstanding or something, right? No? Seriously?!"

  • [acting confident in order to impress fellow classmate, Weiss]

"So um, *ahem* [loudly clears his throat, then pretends to have a deeper, more suave voice] you... come around here often, Snow Angel?"

[Weiss replies: "No... I obviously just arrived here, on the first day of class." Jaune panics abit.]

"Gah-- well, of cooourse you have! I just meant on other occasions other than class, whiiiiich wouldn't make sense because you flew all the way from Atlas, and... yeah. That's a good... point."

[Weiss looks at him unamused and shoos him away: "Why don't you be a bother to someone else, all the way over there?"]

    *sigh* "...Already on it."

  • [Jaune is depressed, discouraged that he won't be able to live up to his family name.]

"No, Pyrrha... I don't think I can do this... What if they're right? What if the Arcs are just... nothing, now?"

[Jaune finds a depressing amusement in his plight, and can't help but laugh.]

"I guess that makes me something else, huh? To be able to drag that name even lower than nothing... heheh..."

[Pyrrha tries to reassure him, but Jaune lashes back, emotional.]

"No, no... just quit it! Don't you get it?! I'm a joke! A failure! I was never meant to be in Beacon, and I am definitely not meant to be an Arc! I don't belong with you guys; hell, I don't even belong in the pile of mud and bricks I tried to crawl out of! I've got nowhere TO GO!"

Description: Nora Valkyrie [no-rah val-kuh-ree] is a hyperactive, perpetually joyful girl and childhood friend of Lie Ren. She seems like a goofball and an airhead most times, but has not shied from moments of maturity and perceptiveness. She flies into battle wielding a giant hammer that transforms into a grenade launcher, which she loves to use to bash monsters' heads in.

Nora remembers very little about her past, save for a massive calamity caused by a monstrous Grimm that destroyed her home and threw her into the waves, where she would be forced to fend for herself until she met Ren.

Nora is based on the thunder god of Norse mythology, Thor.

Voice: While Nora's inspiration is originally from Norse myth, I feel that a Scottish accent would be a very interesting take on her character and something different yet fitting for her. But it goes without saying that a Scandinavian or Germanic accent is also welcome if you are able to capture her hyperactive personality.

Nora's voice, regardless of accent, would sound high-pitched, extremely energetic and bubbly. She has a cutesy, oblivious personality, is always playful and cheerful. Also, a little bit crazy, but in a good way.

Feel free to add slang or adjust the line to better capture the accent, but without sacrificing the coherency of the lines.

An idea for what REMNANTS Nora might sound like.

  • [waking up her best friend Ren for the morning. She's speaking in a very energetic tone and speedy pace, rambling without much sense or direction.]

"Oi! Oioioi, wake up you lazyarse! The sun's shining, it's a beautiful day out, and once again I'm up before you! Rose and shone as a winner I did!"

"Remember when we had that bet... *counts with her fingers* twofourfive... EIGHT years ago? If I could wake up before you every day for a year, you'd do anythin' I'd say?"

[Ren replies: "I wasn't even there... by the time you told me there was a bet, it was already autumn."]

[Nora ignores him in the same breath.] "Well guess what buddy? That's EIGHT favours you owe me! Eight years I actually am better than you at something, and you won't REWARD me?? You robbin' me?"

  • [the others tell her to do something that sounds crazy, like taking on a monster all by herself.]

"Aye, that sounds good to me! Gimme a moment-- no, TWO, and I'll BITE his wee 'ead off!" *makes gnashing and biting noises.*

[Ren tells her to do something that sounds reasonable, like taking out the dorm garbage. Nora makes a sour face.]

"Huuh?! What do I look like to you, the Queen of Vale? Or better yet, her janitor?? I hate garbage duty! Garbage duty is trash, and boring, and it's bloody rubbish is what it is!"

  • [Ren is watching TV on his own in the dorm lounge, when Nora enters from her room. She looks distressed and afraid.]

"Ren...? I had another nightmare... can I cozy up next to you...?"

[She cuddles up next to him, almost without him replying, but Ren lets her anyway. He asks her about the nightmare.]

"Gods, I was so close to rememberin'... it's so close... but every time I do, it.... *voice shakes* It gets too scary..."

[While still vulnerable and having an intimate conversation, she speaks brusquely without missing a beat, still with the sad, sullen tone.]

"Shite an' balls, I hope I never get another one o' those dreams again."

Description: Pyrrha Nikos [pee-rah nee-koss] hails from a society of hardened warriors. An athletic person and high achiever, her strong stature and impressive combat skill is contrasted by a very friendly, polite personality. She can be firm when she needs to, but usually tries to get along with everyone. Coming from a warrior's upbringing, she enrolls into Beacon Academy with a childlike wonder, curious about all the things she couldn't do back home, like going out with friends, cafe-hopping and watching movies.

Pyrrha is based on the Greek hero Achilles, an unparalleled warrior known for their skill in combat.

Voice: Pyrrha has a mid-range, mature-sounding voice. Her voice is gentle and polite, but not too softspoken; confident and firm, but not overbearing. She needs to be versatile enough to act in scenes requiring intense emotion, strength of delivery, and even the occasional comedic scene, as well as more intimate, softer scenes.

Pyrrha is intended to have a Greek or Mediterranean accent, coming from a place modeled after ancient Greek culture and legends, such as Spartans and the Amazons. A Spanish accent is also acceptable, as I heard that both accents sound similar when speaking English.

  • [polite, friendly, enthusiastic]

"Oh! You must be Weiss Schnee [w-ice sh-nee]. It is so good to meet a fellow sister of battle. So exciting, as well!"

[accidentally spills something on Weiss. Her tone becomes embarrassed and very apologetic.]

"Oh! I'm so sorry! I'll... I'll wipe it off right away! How did that happen? Aha... hahaha..."

  • [comforting and encouraging Jaune Arc: her teammate and leader.]

"Jaune, that's not true... I've heard many tales of the Arcs during the Endless Night. The many that died to save Vale... rest assured, my people never forget those fallen in battle, no matter who they are... or where they come from. And even as you breathe and live this very moment... I hold you in my heart -- a hero."

  • [meditating, as if reciting a holy prayer or an oath. Speaking with a firm and resolute, but serene voice]

"By our swords do we rend our flesh, By our shields do we break our bones; By fire, take my soul to war; By blood, carve my death in stone.

[she begins raising her voice, as if channeling an attack or rallying to war]

"The wind takes my name far; Further than men can hear; Further than death can erase... Purge with fire and stir with frost; Birth in my hand, the path I chase..."

[the final line, said with the most conviction and force.]

"Birth to my people, the world we lost!"

Description: Lian Lie Ren [lee-an lee ren] hails from the Kingdom of Mistral. He is childhood friends with Nora Valkyrie from Atlas. Runaways from opposite ends of the world with noone to rely on, they became best friends and promised to protect each other and went to Vale together, where they would enroll into Beacon Academy.

Nicknamed Ren, he is a constantly stoic, reserved person - blunt and forward with his words, never shying from voicing his opinion when he feels it is necessary. He is considered a "low-energy" person, preferring not to do things beyond the necessity, but is often forced into catching up with his hyper friend Nora, leaving him tired and exasperated at Nora's antics. Despite this, he can never say he hates taking care of her, no matter how much she gets into trouble. He enjoys relaxing activities like cooking and taking long showers.

Ren is loosely based on the Chinese folk hero, Hua Mulan.

Voice: For Ren, I am looking for a clear but subtle Chinese accent. This can be native Chinese, but if possible, I would like to see someone with a natural Southeast-Asian Chinese accent, such as Malaysian or Singaporean. Being SEAsian myself, I have a clear idea of the slang and personality Ren would have in this portrayal (i.e. Singlish, Manglish).

Ren has a mostly monotone, serious deep voice, punctuated by moments of comedic outbursts, mainly due to frustration with his friend Nora or when letting out his built-up stress and emotions.

  • [Ren is reprimanding his best friend Nora before she does something crazy again. He doesn't sound angry, as if he's dealt with this countless times, but definitely sounds like he's not enjoying himself.]

"Nora. That's a bad idea, and you know it. So stop pretending you can't hear me and drop the hammer."

[Nora reluctantly relents. Ren motions for her to put away her weapon, which she does. He thanks her with an unusual, but practiced politeness]

    "Thank you."

  • [Ren is arguing with Jaune over a battle plan they're discussing. His delivery is mostly measured here.]

"Jaune, listen to me... If you do this, the tunnel will collapse too early. And if that happens, then what?"

[Jaune replies: "It doesn't matter. I'm the only one going in. If I don't make it out--"]

[Ren loses his cool and raises his voice into an angry tone.] "Like hell I'm letting you do that! Stop acting like a hero, goddammit, and let us help! You don't have to act like a martyr every time things get tough, you still have a team to lead!"

  • [Ren is watching a movie with Nora, making small talk. They start reminiscing about their time together, and Ren smiles.]

"You still never changed, hm? If anything you're twice as hard to deal with..."

[Nora, feeling abit vulnerable, asks him if that's a bad thing. Ren laughs a bit, almost in disbelief.]

"What? Of course not, Nora... of course not."

[he rubs her head affectionately, his mind half in deep thought, as if recalling a long-preserved memory.]

"'Stay this way'. That's what we promised. I think you... *pause* things are perfect the way it is."

Description: Roman Torchwick [roe-muhn tor-ch-wick] is an infamous thief and crime boss in Vale. He hails from the Vale district of Dolce, where he does things like Dust store robberies and heists. He is always seen with his right hand and protégé, Neopolitan, who acts as his partner-in-crime. He is very charismatic but cunning, finding great enjoyment in his various petty crimes throughout Vale. His role in this project will be that of a recurring villain and antagonist.

Personality-wise, Roman is villainous, but never cruel or brutal. He has a certain code of conduct when performing his crimes, and doesn't like when things get too messy or personal. He prefers to outsmart his enemies and mock them with their failure rather than killing them - preferring a clean getaway to a bloodbath.

Roman is based Candlewick/Lampwick from the story of Pinocchio.

Voice: Roman has a mid-range, adult male voice. His accent can be freely interpreted according to the notes, so feel free to include additional takes of different accents if you're feeling up to it. Roman is originally from Dolce, which is based on Italy; but he would have adapted his voice to a more common American or English accent to suit his needs.

He has a suave, charismatic personality, but can still be serious and menacing when his work gets serious. He is quite spontaneous, making snarky or offhanded comments about his opponents whenever they get in his way.

  • [Roman is robbing a store filled with people. He addresses the shopkeep with a friendly tone.]

"What's the hurry? It's not closing time, is it?"

[He then looks to the other store patrons and gives them a cold glare, smoothly transitioning from a conversational tone to a flat, threatening voice in the second half of the below line.]

"As for the rest of you... Get out."

  • [Roman's getaway car gets blown up while trying to escape. He gets frustrated and annoyed.]

    "Oh, come ON!"

[Roman finds himself surrounded by cops. He rolls up his sleeves and gets ready to fight.]

[stretches and grunts] "Looks like even the criminally inclined need to work for their pay these days, huh?"

  • [Neo is sick with a fever and Roman checks up on her. His tone is casual but with a hint of concern, checking her temperature]

"How're you doing kid? Don't push yourself too hard - we've got a big job to do tomorrow."

[Neo insists on getting back up, but he stops her, forcing her to lie back down.]

"Whoa, now now, take it easy, pinstripe. You can jump, kick and stab all you want AFTER you get some rest. Oh, and your medicine too. Here."

[Neo pouts and complains wordlessly about the medicine.]

"Look, I know it looks like vomit and tastes like it too, but do you want to get better or not? Hm?"

I am looking for someone with experience in writing to help me execute REMNANTS' writing to the best of my ability. These would include things like refining thematic focus and character arcs, as well as helping me choose which ideas to focus on and helping me fix any plot holes.

Do note: I already have a sense of the general story and vision for this project, hence why I call it a co-writer role. I will be responsible for not only the artwork, but the dialogue as well. This role is required more for consultancy, refining and bouncing off ideas.

What this role entails:

  • Helping me tie REMNANTS' lore and story together

  • Helping me tie all the story and character arcs thematically

  • Not attached to the canon of the original, but still aiming to stay true to the characters and their essence

  • Providing a sounding board for ideas

  • Helping me decide which ideas to choose, and presenting new possible directions that may suit the story/themes better.

What it does not:

  • Piggybacking my project and audience to push your own story. Please respect my position as the creator of the project. I may inevitably choose to do something that you disagree with, at which point we'll just have to agree to disagree.

  • You will not be required to write dialogue or scripts, just helping me make sure the foundations are laid and that. I would still need feedback on things like pacing the scene properly and cutting out unnecessary stuff.

  • This role is reactive, not proactive. I will not be asking you to write additional material except for when it's relevant to the whole of the story.

Due to the importance of this role and past experience, I wish to work with someone whom I can see eye-to-eye with. For each writer, do send a sample of your prior work (fanfiction.net/AO3/Google Docs, etc.) so I can get a sense of your writing style. Needless to say, please make sure your work is spellchecked and has proper grammar before sending it to me. If your sample work is unpublished or something you do not wish to release publicly, you can DM it to me instead on either CCC or Discord.

Additionally, for each auditioner, I would like to have an actual conversation with you on Discord before the role is cast, either text or voice is fine. Having quality work is only one side of working in a team, and I have to make sure the person who has such a huge influence on this project is someone I can jive with. You can reach me on CCC either in your audition or through message, or on Discord: SYTO#6946.

Due to the number of auditioners I'm expecting, I also invite you to take some time to complete this quiz I made specifically for this role. This is an extensive QnA that helps me understand your tastes as a writer and a RWBY fan, to help we see how much your answers aligns to the direction REMNANTS, which covers various topics such as your opinion on the canon show and your preferred theories around specific characters.
