Planetfall
Project Overview
Sci-fi Political Thriller/Comedy Short Film
I've been writing this for a while, so here's a logline:
Generation after exile from Earth, on a colony ship only one month from planetfall, a second robot crisis erupts. A vain Overseer's public purge of suspected androids escalates into a nationalistic witch-hunt.
I've been playing a lot of Fallout (specifically New Vegas) and Alien Isolation, and I ended up writing this story.
The style is like this puppet style stop motion type animation. The characters are controlled by sticks, and made out of clay. It kind of fits into the themes of the story.
The screenplay is (right now) 47 pages long. So I'm thinking it'll be around 47 minutes, which is quite ambitious. I'm hoping to finish it in around a month, however I said that about my last project and it took way longer (and that was only 8 minutes). That's kind of the main reason I'm moving into 3d.
This project is my first time with 3d. I have to come to terms with the fact that 2d just takes too long, especially for something this big. I'm hoping 3d animation is quicker. The whole time I was writing this, I was thinking that this was going to be quicker. However, upon rendering the cover image for this project, it took a whole minute.
This isn't long necessarily, its just that at 24fps a 45 minute video, at that rate, would take 45 straight days to render. I wanted it to look like puppets, and try to fake the look (kinda like the lego movie with stop motion) but I may have to make some sacrifices to battle my arch-enemy: time.
After a whole day of tweaking, I've gotten the render time down to 30 seconds, which is better. This scene in particular is quite full of objects and lights, and is using ray-tracing (because of the mirrors and windows in frame). Not all scenes will be this busy, so I'm hoping the render time of 30 seconds is just an upper bound. There is also a lot of geometry, such as a dynamic wrinkles for clothes, which I might scrap to lessen render time. And if it's still too much, there's always render farms.
Thanks for your time.
