Project Details & Plot Summary:

This project is an indie horror video game to be released commercially in late 2024 to early 2025. The game is about a dark entity that inhabits a house and, over time, progressively possesses and controls Riley, an 18-year-old girl and high school senior. She gets possessed by the entity and it leads her to kill her friends. Riley believes she is seeing things at first and she gets more possessed as the game goes on. Eventually, the game goes through the possessed Riley creating and eventually executing (not on screen, although there may be lines involving the killing) her plans. Two main story arcs are featured -- one with her parents and one with her friends. Her friends try their hardest to help Riley and they eventually find cause to actually believe that Riley is possessed. The two of them, Brooke and Cole, then help Riley try to get rid of the entity. As for Riley's parents, her mom (Hannah) believes that something's going on with her mental state and her abusive dad (Todd) doesn't even want to help her at all, thinking that Riley's just looking for attention. Throughout the game, Riley shifts from being possessed and unpossessed. She is the main character, but there are four other key supporting roles that are critical in the game, as well as a few other smaller roles that will be added soon. All characters should be very expressive with emotions, and their emotions are vital to the game. All characters must have high quality audio in order to achieve this goal. Every or almost every role will include depictions of pretty extreme emotions and these need to be on point. Most characters are also quite complex and their character and personality traits need to be shown effectively.

Roles/characters:

  • Riley - $95.00 - 18-year-old female.

  • Brooke - $42.50 - 18-year-old female.

  • Cole - $42.50 - 18-year-old male.

  • Hannah (Riley's Mom) - $42.50 - adult female.

  • Todd (Riley's Dad) - $42.50 - adult male.

A few more roles will be added soon, but these are the main five. Pay is a flat payment and is mostly correlated to time spent. The longest role, Riley, should take about 2 hours total and the others should be a little over an hour. It's possible that times may be a little longer than I currently expect (especially considering I haven't yet completed the full script), but I doubt it. If the roles end up larger than initially expected, I'll try to increase payment, but no promises (I'm not exactly swimming in cash over here). All characters should sound American.

Timeline, payment, and contact info:

As stated earlier, the game will be released in late 2024 to early 2025. Lines will be rolled out for each role as the game gets developed. Please do not audition for a role if you can't commit to completing it over the course of ~1 year. The roles don't take much time, but that time will be spread out. I understand you may forget your character a little between batches of lines, but hopefully this won't be a problem. I'll try to refresh your memory. Lines will likely be given out in batches throughout the course of development and payment will be provided in accordance with batch length (ie. if a batch of lines is about half the character's total lines for the game, then half the total compensation will be given along with the batch). Communication will be done via Discord once roles are assigned.

Now go look at the roles!

Latest Updates

  • Update

    Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delay. Auditions are taking a lot longer to go through than I was expecting. Going through auditions is a lengthy 5 step process for each role. I've also been swamped with other things to do as well. I'm now expecting finalist decisions to be completed around May 1st. Let me know if you have any questions, good luck, and thanks for your patience!

  • Timeline

    Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who auditioned for the game! I'm very grateful for the amount of auditions received for each character! I've been out of town for a while and just got back today and will begin the reviewing process. This may take a while due to the sheer amount of auditions (480!). The average audition seems to be around 45-60 seconds, so this will take 6-8 hours for me, one person, to simply listen to all of them (not including the time spent on grading/ranking submissions). Including that additional time, and the fact that this is a passion project and not a full-time job, this will take me some time to get through.

    -

Here's how this is going to work: out of the auditions received, I will narrow down the list to a handful of finalists (anywhere from 3-10 depending on certain factors) per role. These people will receive feedback on their audition (both positive and negative), and they will submit a second audition with different lines as well as fill out a 2 minute questionnaire about things like equipment, availability, etc. Finalists will likely be selected somewhere from 1-2 weeks from today. Obviously, if you don't want to do the finalist audition if selected, you don't have to, but it shouldn't take any longer than your initial audition did. A category I have in my audition grading is essentially a form of "potential," where I see something that I'm looking for in your audition that you may have not explicitly shown, but that I think you're capable of with some direction. With this system, more people get the opportunity to get the role, and I get to listen to people's second shots at the role after I give them a little more direction on what I'm looking for and personal feedback. After finalist auditions are reviewed, final casting decisions should come out around a week after that second deadline.

    -

If you haven't already, please make sure to include your Discord in either your audition (via the description or a comment) or in your profile. Also, make sure that your listed username is updated (many people still have their old Discord usernames before they changed their naming system.) CCC limits the number of messages I can send to people, so the finalist phase will have to happen through Discord.

    -

    Approximate timeline:

    Finalists selected: April 14th - April 21st

    Roles cast: around April 28th

    -

I'd also like to remind everyone that more roles will be available in the coming weeks/months, and I'd love for people to audition for those as well! With 480 auditions for 5 roles, the average role had 96 auditions for 1 slot. Under 10% of candidates will be selected as finalists and only around 1% will be selected for the role, so please don't feel bad if you're not selected. I've listened to quite a few auditions already and can tell that this is going to be a very difficult selection process, and that many talented people will not be selected due to the sheer amount of auditions. I'm both amazed and extremely appreciative of the amount of submissions I received and will do my best to get casting decisions back soon. Good luck to everyone who auditioned, and my sincerest thanks for showing interest in Mulberry!

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING BEFORE AUDITIONING

_______________________________________________________

Riley is an 18-year-old girl. She's a pretty smart and mature girl, similar to Brooke. Excellent portrayal of emotions and good intonation is imperative for this character, including the portrayal of heavier emotions such as fear and distress. As the game goes on, Riley gets possessed and will be different. While possessed, she, or really the entity, plots to kill her friends. In her possessed state, Riley shouldn't overtly "demonic," but rather slightly/moderately creepy and off-putting. However, there needs to be a clear difference in the possessed vs unpossessed lines. The player should be able to tell whether the possessed or unpossessed Riley is speaking quite easily (at least, once they're aware of the possession plot point). Possession will likely start more subtle and become gradually more pronounced, obvious, and eccentric. Throughout the game, Riley will switch back and forth from being possessed to unpossessed.  The possessed lines should be easily distinguishable between the unpossessed lines, but, as stated earlier, shouldn't sound ridiculously over the top. Being able to pull off the unpossessed vs possessed lines and the extreme emotions are the two biggest parts of this role.

In most cases, Riley will have three different types of lines --

     1) memory lines. These will generally be lines that are memories of the past (e.g. the player picks up a birthday card and there's a memory of her birthday and a line associated with that.) These lines will be from before anything weird started happening.

      2) unpossessed, where she acts like a how fairly typical, and pretty mature 18-year-old girl would act in a given situation. These lines will include things like Riley being afraid of what is happening to her (as one would be if there was some dark presence watching and controlling her). While unpossessed, she knows that something's going on. She's basically herself again. At first, Riley doesn't believe what she's seeing/feeling but grows to frantically trying to rid herself of the entity and trying to get help from her friends, parents, and more. The entity doesn't always have a stranglehold on her and these lines are those moments when possession is lost.

     3) possessed. These lines should be delivered as stated earlier.

Audition lines:

  • "I found something in the science room. Come quick!" (excited) (unpossessed)

  • "I found something in the science room. Come quick!" (slightly possessed) (still a discernible difference from unpossessed, but it's not immediately obvious)

  • "I found something in the science room. Come quick!" (more possessed) (obvious difference in delivery from when she's unpossessed)

  • "No! No! Please stop!" (very distressed, screaming/shrieking, not possessed) (being able to pull off the shrieking is essential)

Brooke

Paid: Flat Rate 42 USD

Brooke is an American 18-year-old girl.

She is a pretty stereotypical teenage girl and has kind of a "work hard, play hard" personality. She's a fun party girl but is also extremely smart and gets down to business when it comes to helping to fix Riley's situation. Brooke is also quite mature. Both Brooke and Cole believe what Riley tells them. They first think that someone is stalking her and eventually (alongside with unpossessed Riley) develop the theory that she's Riley's being possessed. This does take some time though, as both of them have some healthy skepticism towards the idea of a supernatural cause, but both Brooke and Cole eventually see no other possible scenario -- considering what they've seen of how Riley's been acting.

Audition lines ("..." denotes a pause) :

  • "Can you calm down for one night? Please?" (with giggles) (context: having fun at night)

  • "Riley... you're kinda freaking me out." (slightly scared, delivered slowly)

  • "No, get away from me... *genuine scream*" (screaming/shrieking) (being able to pull this off well is essential)

Your next two lines are in this conversation. The full conversation is given for context, but only say your lines. This is in the second half of the game after Brooke and Cole find some newspapers in the library. The newspapers talk about similar things happening in the past that are currently happening to Riley now.

  • Riley: "I can feel it too. One moment, I'm completely fine and, the next... something is making me to do things. It used to just be a voice in my head, but now it can do things without my input. I just hopelessly watch as this "entity" uses my body."

  • Brooke: "I found some stuff in the library. You're not the first to report things like that in our town. In fact, I found several times in the last twenty years where someone went to the newspaper with their claims."

  • Cole: "We used to think you were going crazy, but.... it looks like you're actually right. You're literally being possessed, Riley."

  • Brooke: "People in the newspapers talked about things that caused the entity to go away, so..."

  • Cole: "...if we do enough of them, we might be able to cure you, or get as close to a cure as possible."

Cole is an 18-year-old boy and one of Riley's best friends.

He is a pretty stereotypical teenager and is a little more on the mellow side. Like Riley and Brooke, he's pretty mature. Most of Cole's lines will be talking with either Riley, Brooke, or both.

Audition lines ("..." denotes a pause):

  • "Ten dollars says I'm hitting that switch from back here." (playfully) (context: having fun at night)

  • "Riley.... what are you doing? Stop." (very serious and a little scared) (context: Towards the end of the game, Riley is approaching Brooke and Cole while holding a weapon.)

Your next two lines are in this conversation. The full conversation is given for context, but only say your lines. This is in the second half of the game after Brooke and Cole find some newspapers in the library. Hannah Bennett (Riley's mom)
open
Paid: Flat Rate 42 USD

Hannah is an adult female and is Riley's mom. She's a pretty good parent. However, she tends to have to listen to what Todd (Riley's dad) says. Todd is extremely hard on Riley, and Hannah tries to be a good parent but often can't. This is due to her situation with Todd. Todd used to be a kind, respected person, but he developed a gambling addiction a few years ago and became a terrible husband and person. Ever since then, the two have been struggling to pay bills and hold everything together and the problems keep getting worse. Hannah is constantly in fear that Todd will use violence against her, and so, she tends to let him do whatever he wants. She limits the amount of pushback that she gives to his insane actions and thoughts for this reason. When it comes to Riley's possession situation, Hannah tries to help Riley when she can, but she can't do much because of what Todd wants (he wants to do essentially nothing). Hannah believes Riley's either genuinely being stalked by someone, or that she's having something going on with her mental health that needs attention. However, Todd thinks Riley's just seeking attention and being annoying and he refuses to do anything to help her.

I'd highly recommend reading Todd's description as well to understand your role a little better as Hannah and Todd's roles and dynamic can't be understood nearly as well by only reading one description.

Audition lines:

  • "I set up some cameras outside. I think you're just on edge, but I'll keep a lookout just in case. Ok? Goodnight, Riley." (context: Hannah is talking to Riley one on one after Riley had told her parents that she thinks someone is stalking her.)

Your next two lines are in this conversation. Todd's lines are given for context. Say only your lines. At some point in Riley's possession sequence, Todd wants to send Riley to a friend's house until "the whole thing blows over." Hannah doesn't think this is a good idea but essentially has to give in (due to reasons explained above). This five line snippet comes in the middle of an argument.

  • Todd: "I've had enough of this crap. Every night now I hear something going on in her room. She's talking in her sleep, and this is getting ridiculous." (half-yelling)

  • Hannah: "Look at what's going on with her! We can't just send her away!"

  • Todd: "Right now, our problems start and stop at paying the electricity bill, Hannah. I have no time or energy to deal with Riley going psycho." (half-yelling)

  • Hannah: "She's your daughter. What do you mean her well-being isn't your issue? You can't just send her off when she's at her worst!" (half-yelling)

  • Todd: "She just wants attention. Nothing's actually going on. I already have my daughter having a temper-tantrum. I don't need you to have one too." (yelling). (pause) "The decision is final. I'm going to go make some calls now." (calm, but extremely firm).

Todd is an adult male and is Riley's dad. He's, to put it simply, an awful person. Todd used to be a well respected person, but he developed a gambling addiction a few years back and things started to go downhill from there. Ever since Todd's gambling addiction took hold, the Hannah and Todd have been struggling to pay bills and hold everything together and the problems keep getting worse. With everything going on, the two parents have little patience or energy to deal with what's going on with Riley. Todd, especially, does not want to deal with Riley's situation. He thinks she's faking everything and lying for attention. Todd is an abusive husband. He doesn't go so far as to use violence, but Hannah is constantly worried that he will and tends to let Todd do whatever he wants in fear of that. Todd doesn't really listen to Hannah and also doesn't care too much about Riley. Even before the "possession situation", he thought that Riley was lazy and a bad student. Now, his views toward Riley are even worse and he refuses to get help for Riley and doesn't let Hannah do anything to help either.

I'd highly recommend reading Hannah's description as well to understand your role a little better as Hannah and Todd's roles and dynamic can't be understood well by only reading one description.

To effectively play this role, you should be able to demonstrate Todd's extreme character traits.

This five line snippet comes in the middle of an argument.
