Monkey Film

Project Overview

Intro

Hello there and thank you for visiting our project page! This is a casting call for voice actors to partake in our dark fairytale, short animated film which debuts in April 2024! We are still deciding on a final name for the film... So not to worry, our final animated short will not be called 'Monkey Film'.

If you missed out on reading the introduction on our landing page, here's a little blurb to fill you in. We are a group of 10 Sheridan animation students, producing a 7-8 minute fully hand drawn animated short film! We are very excited and passionate about this project, so we hope that you share that same passion for your craft! This story is quite the emotional rollercoaster and contains quite a bit of dialogue, so hopefully your vocal chords are ready to shout!

We are looking for 3 different voice actors with 3 distinct voices, so please check out our Characters and their descriptions in the 'Roles' section of this project to see if these characters would be a good fit to you!

Auditions & Deadlines

The deadline for auditions is December 17th at Midnight (CST). There isn't much room to extend this deadline, as production on animation starts right when we get back to school after the break and runs straight until April. We will notify selected candidates shortly after the deadline, an exact date is still TBD. Lines must be recorded and sent in by the LATEST January 10th (preferably the 8th) as lip syncing on our animation process needs to begin ASAP once January 8th hits.

What to Expect

We are located at Sheridan College (Trafalgar Campus), and have stationary voice recording equipment at the school! If you are in the area and are able to get to the college we can happily meet up with you to use the voice recording studio to record your lines. However if you are outside of the GTA, it is also viable to use your own voice recording equipment and transfer us the files remotely! However a professional audio quality is expected from you if you are unable to visit the Trafalgar campus.

We mainly communicate via Discord, so applicants should have it installed or be willing to install the program in order to communicate with our team! If you need help in figuring out the ins and outs of how the platform works, we would be more than happy to help you along.

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU

  • First and foremost, have fun -- we are a hard working team of individuals, but at the end of the day this is supposed to be a fun project, and we hope that you can join us in feeling an essence of fun while recording the voice lines!

  • Please submit clean recordings on prosumer mics (no air conditioners in the background, no fans -- we don't mind performing noise reduction on your files, however too much clean-up reduces the quality of your voice). And speaking of clean-up -- please let us handle the post-production. Don't add effects to your lines -- leave that to our audio team please!

  • Feel free to cut your lines to your best/favorite takes. Three is an amazing amount of lines for us to choose from. We have a few voice actors that would rather give us more takes, and that's okay, too. However please at least remove lines that you don't think would fit within the film.

  • Please submit your recordings as one .wav file to our studio email address, which will be provided to you after casting. If a file is too large to submit via email, you can always use WeTransfer or upload the files to a drive.

  • We do occasionally ask for line re-dos, but we do this sparingly and only after great consideration - we realize your time is valuable, and we won't ask for anything we can't work around in edits.

  • This project is a short term project, so deadlines are fast and quick. There are only a handful of lines, but due dates should be respected, as our schedule gets really messed up fast if they aren't!
  • As students, we don't really have too much of a budget. However compensation can be discussed further once applications have been gone through.

Banana Box Studios is looking for a composer for our film!

The type of music we are interested in is heavily influenced by traditional Chinese music. Especially music that can be heard within Peking Opera.

However our film takes inspiration from fantasy and folk tales as well, so the music should definitely echo these aspects and be creative & fun. We are not looking to include any vocals within the music.

Since the film takes place in a Chinese opera, where face changing performances take place, the songs we are looking for cover a wide range, from Slow paced emotional music, to mysterious string music to accompany a horrific witch creature, as well as some faster paced performance music.

We are definitely interested in using instruments found within traditional Chinese music. Such as the Pipa, the Guqin, or the Erhu, just as examples.

This is a very important aspect to our animated film, so we are willing to pay for your services. Especially since there are quite a few songs and musical pieces throughout the 8 minute film.

Please include links to your work, having work that fits within the genres that are listed above our a huge benefit, but aren't required. However being able to and willing to create music that includes these aspects is very important to our film.

Slowly being consumed by the darkness of the magic he obtained from the witch. Role assigned to: Lily Yasuda

Low & Cold Voice, she is the mother of Tang, she was a past performer at the Peking Opera house and is now retired (40-50 in age). She cares for her son, but shows it through tough love and keeps a cold distance from him in order to try and push him to greatness. When Tang was a child she was much warmer towards him, however as he grew older, so did his mothers coldness towards Tang. Think Coraline's Normal mother from Coraline, or Mei's mother Ming from Turning Red.
