Project Overview

Hello voice actors and creators!  I am so excited to start another project (I'm probably putting too much on my hands, but no one has ever accused me of NOT finishing a project)!  This time, in honor of the series being rebooted, I am starting a new audio drama for my Fruits Basket fanfiction.

SUMMARY:

Single mother Noa Kaneko meets 8-year-old Yuki Sohma when he has an asthmatic fit by her house.  Deciding to help the young boy, she doesn't know just what she's gotten herself into.  Two years later, Noa allows Yuki to stay in her house for a week away from the Sohmas and soon becomes the mother he always wished he had.

But things take an interesting turn when the infamous head of the family demands to see her.  Unimpressed with what she finds, Noa convinces Akito Sohma to stay in her home with her for one month.  Things go about as well as expected at first, but it doesn't take long for Noa to find out Akito's secret.  Akito is a woman.

From there, Noa does everything she can to show Akito what it is to be loved.  But what will happen after Akito must return to the main house?  And which other Sohmas will Noa meet?  Do all of them mean well...or do some wish her harm?

DETAILS:

1. As per usual for my audio dramas, several characters who are main in the original are downgraded to supporting and minor in the story while others are upgraded to main.  This being said, extras generally read for two or three characters in total.  More details are given in the character descriptions.  

2. I generally give about one month to record lines, but I've never been TOO strict because I understand real life has to come first.  However, I also won't wait around forever and will recast if you prove to be unreliable.

3. Please give me emotion and feeling in your audition!  I have always leaned more towards voice actors who exhibit true passion in their voice.

  • Extended Deadline

    Thank you so much to everyone who has shown interest in my project! I have received some absolutely amazing auditions, and I can tell that casting is going to be pretty difficult! I'm extending the deadline for another three weeks to give more people the chance to audition and to also give me time to get the story converted to script format and wrap up a couple other projects I'm currently working on. Rest assured, this is the ONLY time I will be extending the deadline. Come August 30th, I will take the weekend to listen to auditions more in-depth and cast roles. It's so amazing to hear you guys bring my work to life and I am very excited to begin working with you! Best of luck to everyone as the casting process begins in THREE WEEKS! :)

The narrator of the story.  The role has many lines and requires a lot of talking.  Because this role also carries much of the project, your voice should be smooth and easy on the ears.  It is your job to keep readers listening, so give life to the words.  Add dramatics when describing an intense scene or comedics when recording an amusing scene.  Do not sound monotone, but add many varying levels.  I do NOT want it to sound incredibly formal.  Tell me a story.

Please be ready to record a LOT of dialogue if casted.  This is a 53k word story and about 50% of it if not more is narration.


  • When Akito tried to hit her or verbally abuse her, she still accepted her.  When she made life increasingly difficult for her, she still accepted her.  When she found out that she had been lying about her gender, she still accepted her and allowed her to live as her true self.  When she had nearly been assaulted, she had beat her attackers to a pulp to protect her.  And now…she learned that she had done all of that knowing the truth of their curse, and she still accepted her.  Was this what is was like to have…a mother?  Someone who accepted her no matter what she did?  Someone who always looked out for her and desired to keep her safe from all harm?  Was this what it was like to be…truly loved?

  • Yuta put her arms around his neck before hooking his own arms under her legs and hefting her up.  She quietly moaned as he started walking, and he just hoped she didn’t throw up on him.

A 40-year-old single mother who is the absolute definition of a Mama Bear.  Do NOT hurt this woman's kids, blood or not, or you're in trouble.  She has a wonderful relationship with her son, Yuta, and she develops a very protective nature over the other Sohmas, particularly Yuki and Akito.

She is very sassy and manipulative, but in a good "Mom" way to get people to do something that is for their benefit.  At the same time, she is also very gentle and reassuring when she needs to be.  She is the kind of person who stands up for people who cannot stand up for themselves.

By the end of the story, she has fallen in love with and married Kazuma Sohma, Kyo's foster father.

Voice: motherly, gentle, fiercely protective

Think of Joyce Byers from Stranger Things (in that you do NOT mess with Mama Byers) but more level-headed and not jittery.


  • (after Akito says she could just return to the main house) I suppose you could.  But what might the other members of the family think when the head of the household can’t even last one day outside of the house?  Oh, I’m sure they won’t say anything, but they’ll certainly be thinking it.

  • Akito, we do not throw things in this house!  Do you know what you just threw at me?!  This was a picture of my late husband, and it is extremely important to me!  Just because you don’t get what you want does not give you the excuse to throw things or hit people! Do you understand me?!

  • (gentle) What I now realize is that you are a strong and beautiful woman who I have been very privileged to know.  I don’t care that you’re the head of the Sohma family or that you’re the god of the zodiac.  To me, you are first and foremost Akito Sohma.  And she is pretty incredible.

The short-tempered head of the Sohma family, also the god of the zodiac curse.  She rules the other members of the zodiac through fear and intimidation when she is really just afraid of being alone thanks to her mother's absolutely horrible parenting.

She hates Noa at first because she believes the woman is stealing Yuki away from her which results in Noa managing to convince Akito to come to her house.  Noa learns that Akito is actually a woman rather than a man like she has led everyone in the family to believe.  Akito is initially very hostile towards Noa, but the longer she stays, the more she comes to care for Noa and see her as a mother figure especially when she finds out Noa knew about the curse the entire time.

By the end of the story, Akito learns to let go of the curse and everyone held captive by it.  Later on, she ends up marrying Noa's son, Yuta, and they have a child together.

  • (smirking) I’ll come to your wretched place for one month, and if I am dissatisfied…and I will be…you agree to never speak to another Sohma again for as long as you live.

  • (to Hatori) How could you? You were supposed to just erase Noa’s memories from her time in the Cat’s Room!  How could you erase all of them?!

  • (after releasing everyone from the curse; crying) Is it okay?  Is it okay…to just be me now?

Noa's 22-year-old son who sees Yuki as a younger brother.  He is always cheerful and smiling, a trait passed down from his mother.  Yuta sees the good in everything and sometimes forgets that not everyone has a mother like his.  While Akito is staying at his mother's house, he takes her to the beach in an attempt to befriend her.  After a while, Yuta realizes that he's fallen for the girl.

By the end of the story, he is married to Akito and they are expecting a child.

  • I’m sure even you were a little intimidated when you left the only home you’ve ever known and came to stay with my mom.  But it can be for the best in the end.

  • How did you possibly have enough time to drink both of these in the short amount of time I was gone? *Akito stumbles into his arms laughing* Akito…are you drunk?

  • I think I have problem.  I…I think I like Akito.

The rat of the Zodiac, Yuki first meets Noa when he is eight years old while having an asthma attack.  Noa takes him in and cares for him, knowing how to care for asthma as her son used to have it.  When she goes to hug him, she learns about the zodiac curse but promises not to tell anyone about it so that her memories will not be erased.

Yuki does not see her again for two years when Noa invites him to stay with her for a little while.  After this visit, Yuki continues to see Noa periodically and quickly sees her as the mother he always wanted who will fight for him.  Noa is instrumental in helping Yuki comes to terms with what happened to him in the past at Akito's abusive hands and move forward from the pain of it.

By the end of the story, he and Akito are working to improve their very damaged relationship and he is in a relationship with a girl from school.

  • I’m sorry, it’s just that…I’ve said good-bye to someone I was very close to.  I didn’t even really like this person, and yet I’m crying like this.  It’s so strange.

  • I don’t forgive you.  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive you for everything that happened in the past.  That being said…I’m willing to move forward from here.

  • (furious) Did you order Hatori to erase her memories?  Did you?!

A master of a dojo and Kyo's foster father, Noa comes to him looking for advice on how to deal with temperamental people.  Kazuma later reteaches Noa self-defense, and they soon begin to eat dinner together regularly.  When Noa is injured by a resentful Sohma servant, Kazuma stays with her in the hospital to care for her.

Kazuma confesses to Noa that he likes her and she admits that she feels the same but it will be difficult to get into a relationship because of her previous marriage.  Kazuma agrees to take things slowly out of respect for her late husband.

By the end of the story, Kazuma and Noa marry in a small ceremony.

Voice: soft, gentle, fatherly

  • So you’re the famous Noa.  You’ve caused quite a stir at the main house.

  • (to Noa in the hospital) Shh, calm down.  Everyone’s fine.  They’re all just worried about you.

  • If you want to go slow, we can go slow.  I don’t mind at all.  But I hope you won’t be angry if I do this. *he kisses her cheek*

Hatori Sohma is the Dragon of the zodiac and the Sohma family doctor.  He mainly sees to Akito who stresses herself sick quite often.  Prior to the start of the story, Hatori was engaged to a woman named Kana.  Unfortunately, when they came to Akito for permission to marry, Akito injured Hatori's eye and blamed it all on Kana to the point where the woman fell into deep depression.  Akito convinced Hatori to erase her memories of him, and he had no choice but to obey.

He cares deeply for Akito going even beyond the curse and only wants her to be happy.  When Noa comes along, he tells her why Akito was hiding her gender and hopes that she can reach her and show her what a true bond is like.

By the end of the story, he is planning a wedding to Mayuko Shiraki, a woman he had met years ago and has since fallen in love with.

  • (explaining why Akito was hiding her gender) I’m not saying it was right, but we had no choice.  Shigure and I have constantly tried to be there for her and show her that we accept her as she is, but…it’s not enough, and it never will be.

  • Careful.  You have an IV.  Don’t move.  You’re still weak.

  • Curse or not, I still care very deeply for you.  I always will, Akito.  I promise.

Kyo Sohma

The hot-headed Cat of the Zodiac, Kyo is always acting upset about something.  His mother died when he was young, and his father blamed him for it simply because he was the Cat.  Kazuma took him in and began raising him as his own son, quickly learning how to deal with his temper.  Kyo has two forms as a Zodiac member, the Cat and a hideous disfigured "True Form" that he hides with the use of a beaded bracelet.

Noa meets Kyo while he is practicing at Kazuma's dojo, and soon bonds with him by taking him our for snacks and helping him train.  When Kazuma realizes he likes Noa, he asks Kyo to show her his true form because he doesn't want anything to happen between them without her fully accepting his son.  Noa is shocked, but she promises that she will still love Kyo all the same and accept every part of him, including his true form.

Kyo soon enjoys having Noa around and finds it endearing that she is willing to defend him from people who talk bad about him simply because he is the Cat.

  • You’re so annoying, you know that?!

  • Ugh, I didn’t ask for a therapy session!  If I had known this was coming, I would’ve just said no again!  Free food ain’t worth it.

  • (thinking) I hate this!  All I do is wreck everything!  Master cares so much for her and because of me, she’ll never talk to him again!  Why…?  Why does it have to be like this…?

Ayame Sohma

The unbelievably over-the-top Snake of the Zodiac, Ayame Sohma is a fashion designer and Yuki's older brother.  Growing up, Ayame never thought twice about Yuki and only in passing remembered he even had a little brother at all.  When Yuki begged for help as a child, Ayame brushed him off.  Now, Ayame realizes how cruel he was and tries to mend the rift between them, but he always comes off much too strongly for someone as shy and damaged as Yuki.

Ayame can admit that he was wrong about the way he acted towards Yuki, but he has trouble admitting it to Yuki himself.  He is in love with his assistant, Mine, who is scarily similar to him.

By the end of the story, Ayame is married to Mine and designs both Akito's and Noa's wedding dresses.

Voice: loud, flamboyant, overzealous, boisterous, cheerful

  • Yuki and I may be different, but we share plenty of similarities.  True, I don’t exactly know what they are, but I’m sure they’re there.

  • Why, it’s only appropriate that I, your most perfect cousin, design the dress for the happiest day of your life.  Just you wait, darling.  I shall make something that even a goddess would be jealous of.

  • It doesn’t seem fair that someone like you who has no business with the Sohma family is closer to him than his own flesh and blood.  But then, I suppose there’s no one to blame for that except me.

Shima Sohma

The canon head maid of the Sohma household (she didn't have a name in the series so I gave her one), she prefers the traditional way of Sohma life and enables all of Akito's abusive behavior.  When she sees that Noa is changing the girl, Shima locks Noa up inside the dark and isolated Cat's Room to suffer.  Upon finding this out, Akito expels her from the Sohma household.  However, Shima lures in another servant girl to plan for Hatori to erase all of Noa's memories.

Though the plan ultimately fails, Akito then has Shima transferred to another estate where she can never interfere with Sohma affairs again.

Voice: authoritative, cruel, manipulative

  • You…who don’t even know what this family goes through…you attempt to come in here and change everything.  The Sohmas have lived through the same tradition for hundreds of years.  An outsider like you could never hope to understand.

  • The old you never would’ve defended someone like that.  I only did what you would’ve ordered me to do.

  • Everything I’ve ever done was for your good.

Rina Sohma

A servant in the Sohma household, Rina hates Akito and works with Shima to erase Noa's memories so that Akito will suffer.  However, once she realizes how much pain it causes Akito, she regrets her actions.  She apologizes to Akito and is stunned when Akito calmly offers to help her find work elsewhere if she really wants to leave, but Rina decides to stay even though she knows she will be punished for what she did.

Later, Rina helps Yuta get a drunken Akito to bed and teases him when Akito unknowingly makes rather lewd suggestions.

Voice: youthful, manipulative at first, apologetic later on

  • (feigning sympathy) She said that after everything that happened with the Cat’s Room, she cannot live with herself and it is best that Noa forgets ever meeting her. 

  • It was my fault Miss Kaneko lost her memories.  I…I met with Shima shortly after her dismissal, and she explained to me how I could convince Master Hatori to erase them.

  • (teasing Yuta) Don’t think I am ever letting you forget this.

A girl invited to live with Shigure, Yuki, and Kyo after she loses her mother, Tohru is the definition of a ball of sunshine.  She's very cheerful and smiling and always knows just what to say to comfort people.  She is on good terms with Noa, and later meets with Akito who was afraid of Tohru because she's so beautiful but Tohru tells her that if she herself is beautiful then Akito is beautiful too.

At the end of the story, she is Akito's maid of honor at her wedding.

  • (finding out Kazuma likes Noa) What?  That’s so cute!  And they would be so perfect together!

There's no getting around this.  Ren is an absolutely terrible human being.  She forced Akito to grow up as a man, even threatening to abort her if that didn't happen, all because she wanted to remain the most important woman in her husband's life.

Ren stays on the estate, but she remains locked away so she won't interfere with Sohma matters or hurt Akito anymore.

She appears in one scene at the end when Noa comes to see her to tell her that she is forbidden from ever speaking to Akito again.

Voice: sultry, manipulative, icy

  • Ah, so you’re Noa.  I’ve heard so many people talking about you.  Including that stupid girl who I have the misfortune of calling my daughter.

  • (hysterical) He would’ve loved me!  I know it!  He only loved me!
