Welcome to the Brass Eagle / Main Cast Call (PODCAST)

Project Overview

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

Welcome to the Brass Eagle is an original fantasy podcast series based around the Brass Eagle Tavern, an establishment whispered about in myth and legend.  It is occupied by a lone, very tired-looking man known only as the Keeper, who acts as host to those who wander through its doors.

The series will have 10 episodes ranging from 30-50 minutes each, with the potential for additional content to be released alongside the core series.

The Tavern is a magical and ancient place--its walls echo with the stories of many travelers who have entered within.  The building gets its name from the eagle statue adorning a clock above the central fireplace.  When the clock strikes midnight, the entire tavern is whisked away and reappears somewhere new.  The reason for this magic is slowly revealed over the course of the series.

As the episodes go on, it will become apparent that all is not as it seems, and that the tavern and Keeper possess many secrets.

The story follows a central cast of characters that inhabit the inn as it appears in different locations over the ten episode run.  Several of the main characters have arcs as they each find some form of closure across their adventures.  Most episodes will be self-contained while serving to progress the main narrative.

Episode 1 will be used to generate interest and launch a crowdfunding campaign. Once completed, episodes will be released bi-weekly for the duration of the show. The target audience is for fans of fantasy drama ranging from teens to adults in the 20-30 age range.

Please note that this is a non-union production. This pilot episode is being produced on a set budget, with each actor receiving an agreed-upon rate for their participation. Payment will be Paypal or Venmo.

The long-term goal is to raise enough to pay all voice actors fairly and to produce the entire series at a broadcast-quality level.

If the funding goals aren't reached,  then the pilot will be shopped around to different podcast networks in an effort to secure funding.

ABOUT THIS CASTING CALL

This casting call is for the core cast of the show, those who appear in nearly every episode.

The show is still being written, and therefore is a good ways out from beginning production.  My goal is to begin recording episode 1 by the end of the year, but that may change.  I will also be releasing multiple casting calls for the multitude of other characters once the crowdfunding campaign goes live and the full scope of the series is known.

----

While this project isn't going to be NSFW, certain episodes deal with elements of personal trauma, abuse, violence, and more.  If you're considering applying, please be aware of this.

Please note that since the project will be produced mainly via collaboration over Discord, you must be 13 or older per Discord's terms of service.

AUDITION PROCESS:

This project is LGBTQ+ friendly and contains characters of many different identities.  Unless otherwise specified, actors of any identity or accent are welcome to apply to any role.

Several of the characters don't have a set gender, so feel free to audition for any you feel may be a good fit.  Some characters may be rewritten to better fit an actor if I feel it's an especially great match. The goal is to find actors that can embody the characters convincingly, with the details following suit!

TO AUDITION

  • Please submit each audition as a .mp3 file when possible and include contact information in the audition description.

  • Please title the files as YOURNAME_CHARACTERNAME_AUDITION.mp3

  • Please do up to a maixmum of 3 takes in ABCABC format.  Please slate your audition with your name or username.

  • Audio quality is very important to this production.  High-quality USB/XLR mics are strongly preferred.  Please ensure you're in a noise-free environment.  Minimal cleanup (noise reduction, etc) is acceptable.

After the initial round of auditions, a shortlist will be created for each role.  Actors will be contacted individually regarding next steps which may include additional lines and virtual table reads prior to the final casting decisions.

Production on the entire series will begin after the results of the Kickstarter are available.  It's expected to take anywhere from 6-12 months, so please ensure you can commit to the role if you're auditioning for a character that appears across multiple episodes.

Latest Updates

  • Callbacks Sent Out

    Hello everyone!

Thank you so much for your patience. Between this posting and the casting call document posted on Twitter, this project has had over 500 auditions.

It was difficult to narrow it down since there was such an incredible show of talent, but as of today I have reached out to the individuals that I would like to hear back from regarding callbacks.

If you were not selected for a callback, please know that I appreciate your time and would love to hear from you in the near future for further casting opportunities for the show!

I plan on reaching out to individuals who have submitted to the Voice Actor General Application to request auditions in the future if I feel they may be a good fit for upcoming roles.

    Thanks again!
    Best,
    Connor

  • Deadline: 7/11 at 12 AM EST

    Hello all!

Due to receiving far more auditions than anticipated, I’ve reduced to close round 1 at 12 AM EST Tues 7/11.

I realize this is far earlier than the initial Sept deadline, but I’ve already received so many incredible auditions that it will be difficult to narrow it down. Actors selected for callbacks can expect to hear back within 2 or so weeks after that once I’ve had a chance to review all the auditions.

Thanks so much for all the ones submitted so far and please keep an eye out for future updates!

  • General Application Added

    Hello,

I just wanted to send an update to say that I am floored by the amount and quality of the auditions the project has received in such a short time! I'm honored by the turnout and know it'll be a very difficult decision when the time comes to cast.

That being said, final casting is still planned for a few months away as I continue to finish the scripts and get episode 1 ready for production.

In the interim, I've added a general application role for anyone who may be interested in being considered for future casting opportunities for the show. It's intended to be a catchall so I can have a list of interested people to reach out to.

    Thanks again and happy auditioning!

    Connor

Paid: Flat Rate 150 USD
Role assigned to: ERHollands

MAIN ROLE

Amara is a woman who is introduced in the first episode as a traveling musician and storyteller.   Renowned throughout the region for her cheerful and bombastic style, she travels with a troupe of other entertainers.

However, her outgoing persona masks a deep sense of loss.  When she receives the news that her younger sister has passed away while she was on tour, she spirals into depression and drinking.  She is removed from her band due to her self-destructive behavior, and finds herself back in her hometown when she comes across the Brass Eagle Tavern.

The first episode of the series follows her journey in the lead up to the discovery of the tavern.

While she is an entertainer by trade, she is fiercely protective of those who she considers friends.  Amara frequently butts heads with the Keeper as she makes herself welcome despite his protests.  With an inherent stubbornness and intense curiosity, she decides to follow the tavern in its travels.   While she would never admit it, she views the teleporting tavern as an opportunity to escape from the grief that is plaguing her.

She is a character of high high and low lows, someone who is extremely extroverted and vocal about her opinions.  Despite her stubbornness, she is also very likeable and often the first to be willing to try new things.  It is important that these qualities are conveyed by the actor.

Her age range is anywhere between 20-40 years old.  Amara is open to any actor regardless of identity or background.

Each episode will be rehearsed during a live remote table read with the other actors, director, and producer in order to provide notes and feedback.  A secondary recording session will then be scheduled so the actors can interact and record their final takes.  If necessary, pickups will be requested outside of the scheduled calls.

The goal will be to have as many actors as possible present for the reads to make the acting feel natural and believable, but scheduling will be flexible to accommodate each actor's availability.

  • AMARA: (pacing) Dammit. DAMMIT! I can’t lose you too! // ELLIS: (confused) …Lose me too? What do you mean? // AMARA: (sighing, on the verge of sobs) My…my sister. Before I came to the tavern, I was touring with my band. She got sick, and I was away, and by the time I got back, she was…gone. Gods. No.

  • (angry, exasperated) I KNOW WHAT YOU SAID! God! I FUCKED UP, okay?! Is THAT what you want to hear? Congrat-you-LATIONS. You were right!

MAIN ROLE

(first appears in Episode 2)

Ellis is a nonbinary teenager and a traveler who is on the run from a difficult home life.  They stumble into the tavern on a quiet country road and stay after Amara insists on it, much to the Keeper's displeasure.

Initially apologetic, withdrawn, and a bit naive, they eventually learn to trust others and theirself, and grow immensely as a character.  Ellis struggles with anxiety and often lets the others take the lead when things become too much to handle.

Ellis is helpful by nature, but they strongly dislike conflict and seeks to avoid it wherever possible.

From the beginning, they represent a mediative presence in the tavern.  With Amara and the Keeper constantly butting heads, Ellis often finds theirself on the outskirts of their disagreements.

However, they often prove to be the most emotionally mature of the three people living in the tavern.  They become a surrogate younger sibling for Amara, who sticks to them like glue.

Their age range is anywhere between 14-19 years old.  Ellis is open to any actor regardless of identity or background, but non-binary actors are strongly preferred.

  • Ellis: Do you have any good stories? From being on the ship, I mean. // PETREL (smiling): Sure do. Tell you what–trade you for one about your tavern? // Ellis: (smiling back) I’d like that.

  • (nervous) M-me? Um, okay. We’re just passing through, we followed the road into town and when we got here it looked abandoned!

  • ELLIS: It’s ok. I know the feeling. Hey…remember what I promised you? // AMARA: That you’d hit me with a snowball? // ELLIS Well, yes. Which I did. But we agreed you’d give Mr. Keeper a piece of your mind, right?

Narrator (they/he/she)

Paid: Flat Rate 75 USD

MAIN ROLE

The Narrator introduces the first episode and will appear throughout the rest of the series.  In addition to providing background and helping set the stage of each episode, they often narrate events that would be difficult to convey through audio alone.

They gradually take on a more prominent role in the overarching series as they transform from an omniscient voice to a character with intrinsic ties to the story.

Clarity and familiarity are very important aspects of the Narrator's voice, and it's important that their narration is versatile, able to go from intimate (i.e. telling stories around a campfire) to grand (i.e. giving a speech in front of a massive crowd).

They should sound warm and welcoming, but have the potential to express a variety of emotion.

The Narrator is open to any actor regardless of identity or background.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each episode will be rehearsed during a live remote table read with the other actors, director, and producer so that feedback can be provided.  After this first read, the Narrator can record independently if they so choose.

Since the Narrator is not directly interacting with the other characters, the actor will be able to record individually with pickups being done as needed.

  • In the frigid north of the world, far from any settlement of timber and stone, rolling gray hills stretch to the horizon. Sparse clouds hang low over the dark landscape, obscuring narrow rock chasms thick with gorse and heather. In the distance, the foothills ascend to mountains of immense stature. Their jagged stone bodies tower over the land, puncturing through the fields and rising to tremendous cathedrals of stone silhouetted against the stars.

  • With a dismissive wave of her hand, Amara holds the door for Ellis before they are both swallowed by the swirling white of the storm. The Keeper rolls his eyes, sighs, and smiles a bit despite himself. Despite the near constant headaches, he must admit-–life has been much more interesting recently.

  • Time? I find it strange how you always come back to that. You've got all the time in the world. Or have you forgotten?

Welcome to the Brass Eagle is looking for a talented producer to help with scheduling, managing logistics, and bringing the show to life.  I'm looking to work with a person  who has experience organizing assets and working on audio dramas and is passionate about it.  As each episode is around 40-60 minutes, with multiple characters and many sound effects, it would be amazing to have someone to help with organization and accountability.

If you have experience in similar roles to this, please drop your contact information and projects you've worked on below. Thanks!

As I haven't worked with many producers in the past and don't really have an idea of what would be reasonable, I want to make compensation fair and have an open discussion regarding payment.
