El Cheapo: Episodes 1-4

El Cheapo: Episodes 1-4

Project Overview

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

El Cheapo is an episodic web cartoon series that follows the escapades of three misfit high school seniors: a narcissistic cheapskate aptly nicknamed “El Cheapo”, his girlfriend Dev, and his best friend “You There”, as El Cheapo schemes to make money or win prizes or bragging rights, and drags his companions into his get-rich-quick schemes.

Depending on how successful I am with this, I intend for additional El Cheapo episodes to be released in four episode “batches”. This Casting Call is for characters in episodes 1-4, though certain characters are intended to be permanent casting choices (for the main characters and for recurring ones, both of which are specified in specific roles).

EDIT: I also need to specify that the payment for these roles is for the full set of segments/episodes (that is, $X for all, not $X for each), though each script is relatively short.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Quality voice recording setup, or access to a recording booth/studio if the former isn’t the case.

  • A PayPal account (gotta pay you somehow, and I’m most experienced/comfortable with PayPal).

  • Willingness to sign a contract/NDA that stipulates things like “I won’t use your voice for AI generators or sell the recordings to anyone without your permission”, and “You won’t leak any of my scripts, character/plot details, art assets, etc. to anyone else without my permission”. It’s for peace of mind for both parties.

  • Being 18+, not just due to the language of the show and some of its content being unsuitable for minors, but also due to potential legal issues in terms of hiring and paying someone who isn’t old enough to give consent.

  • (Optional) Discord, since that's objectively the best way to keep in touch with me (but rest assured, I check my email and CCC messages routinely!).

UPDATE: Due to miscalculating the amount of lines and work that would go into them for the two listed leads, I have bumped up the pay of El Cheapo and Dev (which is applicable to those who have and/or plan on auditioning for both characters) by $50 to make amends for my mistake.

El Cheapo

Paid: Flat Rate 250 USD
Role assigned to: Wiley Koyote

Sean, or “El Cheapo”, as he’s known by his peers, is a greedy, cheap, smart-mouthed narcissist whose typical day involves dragging his girlfriend Dev and his best friend “You There” into schemes to make money, or win some sort of prize or bragging rights.

For a voice, I’m looking for one of two things, or a mix of both: if I had to name a close comparison to how I imagine El Cheapo’s voice, it would be Hank Hill – that, or the “Wendy’s Guy” (the guy from that viral video of a dude yelling into a drive-thru window at a Wendy’s), if he were less pissed off, or perhaps a bit of both – a less mellow Hank Hill, one who's more assertive, direct, and sarcastic.

This is a main role, as in, if you’re picked, I’ll get in touch with you to voice the character for the next set of episodes I make, with the same pay.

  • Goddamnit, I-I paid more than this! I want ten bucks!

  • Dev, you lost me at “split the money”. You’re my girlfriend *and* my competition now. You There, come with me. We’ve got chili to cook.

  • Thank *God*, it’s- (horrified, higher-pitched voice) Coach Payne?!

Devyn "Dev" Socorro
closed
Paid: Flat Rate 300 USD
Role assigned to: vo_darlene_

Dev Socorro is a Cuban-American aspiring rockstar with a good heart and a limitless appetite. Of herself, El Cheapo, and one other member of the main trio, she’s generally the nicest and the only one with her head screwed on straight, but even she has her moments.

Like El Cheapo, one of two voice impressions is applicable: the first is, if I were to pick an established person to compare Dev’s voice to, the closest/ideal match would definitely be Camila Cabello, although the faux Latin-accent/dialect that Anna Graves put on for the Zone Defender unit in Command & Conquer: Tiberian Twilight would work as a secondary option (if requested, I can send over a demo of some of the lines from the game, since it’s a somewhat obscure reference/comparison).

This pays the highest because while El Cheapo is the main character, Dev’s role is more involved – she sings sometimes, she cries sometimes, and she emotes a bit more compared to her rather stoic peers. While it’s not set in stone, something I have in mind is that Dev also very occasionally speaks Spanish, so knowing enough to at least pass as a native speaker is important.

  • Wow, dude. That’s actually a really delicious- (worriedly corrects herself) I-I mean, malicious idea.

  • (singing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Bad Moon Rising) I see the bad moon a-risin'. I see trouble on the way. I see earthquakes and lightnin'. I see bad times today. Don’t go around tonight, well it's bound to take your life. There’s a bad moon on the rise!

  • (In Spanish – optional line, see above) This gringo is my friend, and he’s no threat to you. He’s just a nerd who was drafted by Evil Emperor Chump to serve in his army of Mallmart off-brand stormtroopers.

Victoria Vance

Paid: Flat Rate 50 USD
Role assigned to: vivianreed

The local queen bee/bully and de facto main antagonist of the series, Victoria is your run of the mill antagonistic popular girl, right down to the valley girl dialect, the “Like, uh, yah” verbal tics, and having two nameless, voiceless betas who follow her around to make her look important. Unlike El Cheapo and Dev, there’s no particular actor/character voice soundalike that I’m after, other than what I described.

This is a recurring role, as in, if you’re picked, I’ll get in touch with you to voice the character for the next set of episodes I make that this character features in, with proportional pay per episode the character features in.

  • (unnecessarily aggressively) Watch where you’re going, you stupid f*cking nerd! You owe me for that coffee or so help me goddamnit, you’re history.

  • (scoffs, then says rather snidely) Eating trash again, You There? No wonder you’re so unpopular and repulsive to women.

  • (firmly and angrily) *No*, Bobby, they can *wait*. i’m the most popular girl at school, they can wait an extra 30 minutes. No, i don’t *care* that they’ve already been waiting an hour.

Coach Payne

Paid: Flat Rate 25 USD
Role assigned to: Max L

Coach Payne is El Cheapo’s high school’s gym and football coach who offers the main trio a tempting deal in one episode. He’s a salty old jackass, disdained by the more progressive world he’s living in and intolerant of pretty much everyone that isn’t himself or one of the members of the football team. With that description in mind, you can probably imagine the voice I’m going for – that of a gruff, grouchy, bitter old jerk.

  • I wouldn’t have picked them either, but our principal is all hip, politically correct, and inclusive, so (mockingly on “they”) “they” said I had to.

  • (enraged shout) You There! (non-shout, clenched teeth) What the *hell* did you *do*?!

Football Players (x4)
closed
Paid: Flat Rate 5 USD

As extras, I have no voice or accent in mind for these guys, although it’s worth mentioning that El Cheapo is set in Texas, so Texan accents are encouraged, but if you don’t have or don’t want to do one, a non-accented voice works. Basically, as long as it’s not something overtly foreign and is something you’d hear in the United States in general, it’s fair game. Also, the demo/sample lines aren’t the only ones you need to use – with two exceptions (the second and third demo lines) the only lines that most of the football players have are just complaints.

There are four football player extras in total (which isn't realistic, but we're talking about animation budgets here), so four people will be picked from the auditions.

  • (insert generic complaints here – use the following as examples) “A girl AND a nerd? Seriously?” - “Aw man, come on, coach!” - “Dude, this is bullshit!”

  • (said in a low energy “stoned” voice) Guys, I’m Commander Underwear! Fa-la-la!

  • (said in a low energy “stoned” voice) Listen here, you little prick. If I catch you hitting on my girlfriend again, I’m gonna kick your ass. (beat) Silent treatment, huh? Two can play at that game.

Cheerleaders (x5)
closed
Paid: Flat Rate 5 USD

Similar to the football players, the cheerleaders have no set voice type or accent other than all five (technically six, since Victoria is one of the six) being women. They're there to cheer one line, and that's it.

  • (Upbeat cheerleader cheer) His time is up, the end is nigh! He’s gonna lose and he’s gonna die! Screeew You There!

Doctor

A minor role in one of the initial four episodes, a fairly young doctor working at a hospital checks on one of the main characters after he sustains an injury. The doctor is a woman, but there aren’t any specific accents or impressions I’m aiming for other than, like the football team and cheerleaders, trying to keep things within the Americas (and USA in particular), accent-wise.

A minor role in one of the initial four episodes, a reporter reports on an incident that occurs at the start of the episode she’s in. Same deal as the doctor – younger woman, and there aren’t any accents or comparisons that I’m looking for (other than having it be something that would feel in place in a Texas setting).

  • Now, picking up where we left off: a dead body was found in the parking lot of Big Buck’s Barbecue early this morning, with the apparent cause of death being a gunshot. However, as this sped-up parking lot security camera footage shows, this wasn’t a typical homicide.

Judge 1 “Some F*ckin’ Guy”

Paid: Flat Rate 5 USD

One of the two judges involved in a chili cook-off is a middle-aged dude. No accents or voice impressions needed, provided that A) it fits the setting (Texas); and B) it doesn’t sound like either an 8-year-old boy or a guy on his deathbed.

  • Whoa. That is *stout*, but in a good way. Very flavorful.

  • Well, now that all contestants’ dishes have been sampled, head to the center stage once we’re ready to declare a winner. Good luck.

Judge 2 “Generic Judge Lady”

Paid: Flat Rate 5 USD
Role assigned to: Gina Moravec

The other judge in a chili cook-off is essentially a gender-inverted counterpart to the first one, by which I mean a middle-aged woman who doesn’t sound too old or too young, and doesn’t have any kind of quirky accent or mannerisms.

Language:

  • I agree. I can tell you really put a lot of effort into this.

  • That’s *incredible*.
