Casting for the 2025 release of The Distance Silence Radio Hour, an anthology Lovecraftian audio drama set in the mid-20th century. The show is released bi-yearly with two full, feature length productions already completed in 2021 and 2023. Please listen to the previous show (linked on this page) to get a sense of the tone and style we are aiming for.
The show follows three stories told by a Lovecraftian narrator who weaves them together to reveal a larger narrative happening in the shadows around the main characters.
While the show is set in an alternative version of the 20th century that remained technologically the same as the 1940s, all actors from all backgrounds are welcome to audition. Historical casting from the time would perpetuated racist and sexist representation which is not the aim of the show.

Now that the auditions have finally wrapped, we will move to casting. Emails/discords/messages will be going out over the next few days into the weekend so keep an eye out, and thank you all again for auditioning. This is by the far the biggest turnout we've had for one of the DSRH shows and we're immensely humbled by how the community has shown up for this. Thank you.
The update yesterday should have said the deadline was extended to the 30th not the 20th. That was a error. The true deadline is this coming Wednesday, July 30th.

Looking for a late 20s-early 30s male voice who can embody both slight paranoia but also a rational outlook. Miguel is a blue-collar deep-sea fisherman who comes face to face with the unexplainable out at sea and is the only one of the dwindling number of crew you tries to rationalize what is happening.
(professional) Change of watch. The new hand needs your help with the tackle.
(haunted) We…we used to have a seventh crew member. My bunk was right next to his. Then, one day after I cleaned up the cabin after some rough seas threw everything around, I saw it wasn’t there anymore–they weren’t there any more.
The burgeoning matriarch of a cult that is simultaneously afraid of the thing she worships. Someone who enjoys the prestige and power of her position but when the real-deal shows up at her doorstep her true belief in her occult practices will be tested.

(annoyed, a little queasy) I’ve the blessings of our lord and the power to match, but I still get motion sick from reading in a car.
Smart, resourceful working woman of the 20th century in her mid-to-late 30s. Optimistic and realistic, her job is a teacher and is a good one to boot. She'll have to use all of her wits and grit to try to figure a way of the horrifying situation she finds herself in the dead of night on the side of the road.
Role involves:
(cheeky) Nothing like titillating information to give you some courage.
(fed up) Oh, shut up. I’m sorry I’m an inconvenience but there’s nothing between Distant Silence and Point Cedar so yeah, they might need a ride.
(sympathetic) It’s an uncle of mine, for me. He hasn’t been doing well which is why I’m in such a hurry to get up there.
Rodney is a gruff tow truck driver who reluctantly picks up a hitchhiker only to fall into a supernatural mystery. Cynical and pragmatic, he isn't totally without heart as he shares brief moments of vulnerability but they are few and far between in his hair raising story.
Role Requires:
(angry) You couldn’t stick your thumb out or whatever to hitch a ride like a normal person?
(Sincere) Fair enough. But we had better get going then if they are missing. The first 24 hours, I’ve heard, are the most important or something like that.
(Softening) Yeah. Older guy. Lives alone with a heart condition. I’m kind of the only person he's got, so…
A salty old fisherman, superstitious to the core but not without reason. The strange voice of reason among his crew and the one with the most level head as tragedy strikes and chaos breaks loose.
Role Involves:
(complaining) It’s music. Do you need a reason to enjoy it? It isn’t as annoying as all of your books.
(patronizing) You aren’t going to find a whole other bunk searching like that.
(taking charge) We need to focus: How is this happening? Why are we still here? Why were you two able to remember things but I was not?

Walter Cronkite type. Late night news radio host.

(mater-o-fact) Tonight the council in Distant Silence moved to ratify a reform to non-profit designations. The proponents of the legislation say it will crack down on undue tax dodging by certain organizations whose overhead costs place them more in line with their for-profit counterparts.
Male voice (30s-40s) with naturalistic, weary intensity for REESE, a deep-sea fisherman haunted by vanishing crewmates. Requires emotional range from dry humor to unraveling terror.
Role Involves:
Contrast quiet journal introspection with deck-shouting chaos
Physicality required (grunts, breath control for panic scenes)
Subtext: A practical man losing grip on reality
(nostalgic) Wednesday, February 3rd: Should be home soon. It’s been so long. I can’t wait to get back to shore. What have I missed? I can hardly remember what everyone was doing when I left.
(thinking) Maybe it’s on my hiring paperwork which is…which is… (BEAT, uncertainty sets in) Which is…where?
(intense) Does it look like we’re trying to be *funny* right now?
Older female voice (50s-60s) with scholarly gravitas and quiet power for PORDOVNA, a mystic professor defending humanity against cosmic nihilism. Requires commanding presence for Latin spell incantations and warmth for philosophical debates. Ideal voices balance intellectual precision with suppressed fury.
(disappointed) You’ve let it defeat you. You did not used to lie down so easily.
(commanding) And who are you to promise such a thing? (BEAT)(sympathetic) But it seems you are not of your own will any longer. You’ve given it up.

(losing patience) All of us are here. You drew the short straw for a solo night watch. So unless you were talking to the captain up there, which seems unlikely given this conversation, yeah: by yourself.
A male voice (20s-30s) with a light Brooklyn accent for CHEN, a sardonic Chinese restaurant worker juggling his father’s demands. Requires world-weary humor and authentic frustration. Must balance comedic timing with subtle exhaustion. Bilingual Mandarin/English a plus but not required.

(correcting) No, no. I mean, you were a dick, but I’m trying… (collecting himself) You ever have that feeling that something you should know just suddenly feels really strange?
A menacing male/female voice (30s-50s) with cold, calculated intensity for a ruthless enforcer. Must balance dark humor with brutal efficiency. Requires physicality (grunts, pained reactions) and a gravelly, authoritative tone. Neutral American accent.
(loudly, grossed out) Ah, fuck-what the hell is this shit?
(calling out, with malice) Inspectors! Let’s make this quick. I don’t like being here any more than you so let me send you somewhere else.
There are multiple trucker characters within the show who appear and speak briefly. Reading the sides for this role auditions you for all of the minor trucker roles.
(panicked) Just past yardstick 88 outside Winston-Salem, Blue Gorilla. I’m trying to coast to slow down but it’s gonna take a while on this ice. Over.
(shooting the breeze) For how fussy dispatch is about making time, Blue Gorilla, they sure don’t mind when we waste it getting launched from the plant. Over.
(annoyed) Dispatch, I’ve been sitting in the loading bay for almost an hour now. Any status on what’s taking the boys so long back there? Over.

There are several radio announcers who appear briefly throughout the show to deliver various "news" segments. Auditioning for this part auditions you for all announcers roles.
(mater-o-fact) We apologize for interrupting tonight's musical performance, but have just received breaking news coming from the coast.
(mater-o-fact) The studio is receiving hundreds of calls. Animals running amuck, the elderly screaming in their sleep, birds dropping dead from the sky. I-I don’t know what it all means, folks.
(mater-o-fact) The boardwalk has been pulled out into the sea. Just a minute ladies and gentlemen, we’re getting more on the feed…

There are several instances of various reporters appearing throughout the show. Audition for this part auditions you for all of the minor appearances of the reporters.
(clamoring) What can you tell us about the shutdown?
(clamoring) Was station 1135 RHG involved in something illegal?
(clamoring) Does this have something to do with the millionaire Clare Brinkweather?
A deep, resonant male voice (40s-50s) for GODFREY, a seasoned fisherman with dry humor and quiet authority. Requires booming projection for crisis moments and effortless deadpan. Ideal voices convey rugged experience with underlying warmth. Neutral accent preferred.
(COMING DOWN FROM A FIT OF LAUGHTER) Ha ha ha. But seriously, you were lucky it didn’t cut you in half.

An overly assertive male voice (40s-50s) for a police captain. Must project undue confidence without being actively arrogant while the character encounters strange occurrences they cannot explain.
(mansplaining) It was around two-fifteen and it was thanks to my old beat days during prohibition.
(following orders) My guys did a light sweep for anything dangerous but otherwise, no.
A mature male voice (50s-60s) with authentic Mandarin fluency for YǓHÁNG, a stubborn but caring Chinese restaurant owner. Requires exasperated paternal energy (*"米饭发霉了！赶紧挪走!"/"The rice is molding! Move it now!") and comedic timing when bickering with his son. Naturalistic delivery preferred—no caricatures. Bilingual actors prioritized
