Danganronpa: First Blood - Staff Side
Project Overview
Danganronpa: First Blood is an Audio Drama Fanganronpa project that features a main character. It differs from many other series in the manner that is includes narration, and also has much longer episodes than what might otherwise be expected.
The students within the killing game have already been cast, and it is time to move on to the people behind the game. The staff are members and employees of the disgraced and ignored Research Department of Hope's Peak Academy, and much of what they do is done in order to force the hand of the school's higher ups. However, there is a great deal of turmoil faced behind the scenes, which much of the series will focus on.
This series is designed to parallel the original Danganronpa series in many ways, though the two worlds are not the same. While many names and families may seem familiar, these characters are different, and go through different experiences and perform different actions from those in the mainline series.
A note for any auditioneers: this will be different than most fangans you might have auditioned for. Up until chapter 4 of this story has already been 90% completed, meaning you will get scripts and info much more efficiently than most other projects.
This project contains violence, swearing, descriptions of violence, elements of horror, and themes of abuse, grief, and loss.
Character art and sprites created by the wonderful Veratoshii!

Yasuda is the director of the killing game. He is also, along with the rest of the staff, a disgraced employee of Hope's Peak's Department of Research. He has an aura of calm, cool, and collectedness, although he can certainly get angry. For example, he is intensely angry at Hope's Peak, which led him to beginning the killing game and moving forward with the many crimes committed in the process.
His voice should be commanding. He's a middle-aged man, struggling to keep up with much of the slang and behavior of the younger people on staff. He is rather full of himself, and enjoys people kissing up to him. A deeper voice is suggested, but voice actors are free to make alternate choices.

(Simultaneously reassuring and menacing) "Don't be. You did a good job thinking this whole game up. Nice work."
(Strict, perhaps repressing some excitement) “Don't get ahead of yourself, Aka. We're only just starting. Get ready, because we'll be working day and night for the next month or so. Miura, has the Academy caught on?”
(Concerned, as if keeping an eye on the time) “I’m just worried about the students spotting you… there’ll be fourteen of them. They’d swarm you and interrogate you.”
(Koh-hah-koo Mee-ur-uh)
Gender: Non-Binary (Leaning fem)
On the surface, they are a model employee. Gets her job done, makes sure no authorities discover anything before they're meant to, and makes sure they don't find any of the staff in their hideout. However, if you look even the slightest bit past their surface, they're immediately unsettling. An underlying menace lies in every word they say. They are the true leader of the staff, even if Yasuda believes he is. Their behavior gives an air of inhumanness, as if they have become so dedicated to their work that they don't have any mind to anything else.
Their voice should express the general unease they exude. Generally monotoned, but with a penchant for unnerving monologues about the nature of life that should unsettle not only the characters around them but the audience as well. They are likely slightly feminine leaning vocally, but androgyny is appreciated in any audition. Don't be afraid to get a little bit strange with any audition for Miura.

(Blunt, calculating) "Don't call me that. Update on the academy. They just searched the manor. They found the bodies.
(Recording Logs) “05/26/12. Subject has undergone several experimental medical trials. Subject appears slightly more pale than previously recorded. Other symptoms include: Mild general confusion, severe and frequent headaches, frequent dissociation, severe existential dread bordering on debilitating, severe suicidal ideation, severe pain described as feeling “behind the eyes”. Subject appears distressed. Needs to be kept in containment to prevent further harm to himself or others.”
(Cold, menacing) “And I understand that much. But if group morale gets too low, who’s to say they won’t just give up by next trial? Everyone has a role. And if they aren't fulfilling that role, then nothing gets done. That can't happen.”
(Mah-sah-hee-koh Ah-kah-bah-nay)

Akabane is a theatre kid at heart, and is the mastermind not behind the killing game, but its mascot. He is relatively moral compared to the rest of the staff and takes greater issue with the killing game than most of the others (he is still a part of the killing game, so don't give him too much credit). Near the start of the killing game, he is very energetic, and works very hard as Monokuma through a mo-cap suit in order to fulfil his part of the plot. He is a relatively charismatic and charming person, and can function as some slight morale for the staff.
Vocally, any actor who wants to voice Akabane will need to also voice Monokuma in the killing game. If a voice actor is unable to do one of the two voices, then they are allowed to only audition for one of the two. However, this will heavily weaken chances of getting cast.
Monokuma's voice should be similar to, if not identical to the performance of Brian Beacock in the original Danganronpa series.

Akabane is (at least at the beginning) a happy-go-lucky and bright person, and any voice should reflect that in tone. However, he also explores a great deal of deeper emotions through growing struggles with his work on the killing game. His voice does not need to be any particular pitch, and is very flexible for any voice actor.

(Bright, somewhat flirtatious) “Why hello, Mr. Yasuda! So far so good on all fronts! Wouldn't you agree we did a stellar job~?”
(Interested, somewhat tipsy) “Huh! Whaddya know! You pretty much created an Ultimate Student! From how I keep hearing the story, I thought the headmaster hit him!”
(Monokuma Theatre, beginning to the tune of "Ballad of Guitaeu" from "Assassins") “*Look on the bright side, not on the sad side! Inside the bad side, something’s good~!* Ah, music is so fascinating! All you’re doing is making the air do squigglies through vibrations, and you’re telling me you can make a career out of that!? Why did nobody tell me!? Do you realize how cool it could be to say you’re a PROFESSIONAL AIR SQUIGGLER!? And don’t even get me STARTED on how those squiggle can compel people to throw their bodies around, and THAT CAN BE A CAREER TOO! Who needs weapons, or exposed wires, or puppet strings, when you can use the best tool for forcing someone to move- air squiggles!”

Gender: Female
One of the hardest workers in the staff, as well as one of, if not the most dangerous. Whenever the Research Department needs a cop or witness removed from a situation, they send Iwai, the job gets done. She is a former member of a Hope's Peak mercenary team, having been recruited as a child like many of the other members. She works closely with several other staff members, such as Nakahara, and is quick to fix and calm a situation if something goes wrong. She cares very little about emotions, and focuses on getting thing finished and out of the way.
Her voice should be strong, stern, and probably a little cool. She's the most casually menacing person in the staff, and doesn't usually speak more than she has to. However, she is not soulless, and is able to make jokes occasionally as well as be pissed at her coworkers. She might be somewhat monotone, but should still have depth and range as a voice.
- female adult
(Exhausted, uncertain as to whether she's joking) “Hagihara, argue with Fujita one more time and I swear, Kato will have to identify you from the neck down.”
(Interrogating, throughout a conversation) “What’s your name, who do you work for, and what do you know?" (Nakahara: "How far did he make it?") “He was trying to look under the door to the office.”
(Joking, blunt) “If only you could do away with our empathy.” (Miura: "Well-") “Before you say something I really don’t want to hear, I feel the need to tell you that was sarcasm."
(Nohr-ee-ah-kee Foo-jee-tah)
Gender: Male
Fujita is a bit of a sleaze. He's one of the youngest staff members, and uses this fact to infuriate some of the older employees (Yasuda). While he gets his work done, he often waits for the last moment and chooses instead to aggravate his coworkers and waste time. He often teases his coworkers and functions as a bit of comedic relief. On another note, he has a habit of acting as if he knows a lot more than he should, and it is difficult to tell if he is bluffing most of the time.
Fujita should have a relatively laid back and sarcastic tone. He is quite jokey in a lot of his dialogue, and teases a lot of his coworkers. His voice should be rather young sounding (in a college student sort of way) and should feel distinctly more up-to-date on things than someone like Yasuda. His voice is likely a pretty medium pitch, though there is nothing specific in mind.

(Tired, wanting to quit early) “Then it can wait! Kamiya will probably catch it and wake us up…” (Hagihara: "Yeah, but I don't want to give him that credit.") “Are you suggesting we pull an all nighter out of spite…? Sweet! Spite and pettiness is my specialty!”
(Teasing, curious) “You got so drunk! You weren’t even making sense anymore! The only thing I could make out was something something ‘girlfriend’ something something... So, who’s the giiiiiirl~?”
(More down to Earth, maybe a hint of jokiness) “Someone send Yasuda after him, that oughta make him pull himself together.”
(Ray Hah-gee-hah-rah)
Gender: Female
A hard worker who gets her job done whenever she needs to. However, she is not purely obsessed with her work, being one of the few staff members with a consistent social life prior to the game, including a girlfriend that brings in conflict to her work at the killing game. She's got a slight temper and often fights back at Fujita's teasing, but is typically levelheaded.
Her voice should be confident, but not overly strong. She is someone who is sure of who she is but doesn't go out of her way to make herself known. A voice actor for her should be able to deliver lines very naturally, and should be able to make the thoughts and criticisms she has feel real and understandable. She might have a slightly lower voice, but she is very open to interpretation.
- female adult
(Blunt, almost a little disappointed) “Why does he even like Yasuda? He’s kind of a dick. Plus I'm pretty sure he's super conservative. I feel like he’d immediately start hate-criming if he knew what Akabane thought of him.”
(Somewhat unsettled) “Okay, well that one’s a given. Dude’s a fucking creep. I feel like every second I spend around him takes another hour off my lifespan…”
(Calm, calculating, shifting to a little petty by the end) “It really depends on how they’re all holding up after the first trial. So, take it with a grain of salt but, I think the spirit medium might crack. If so, I could see her going for someone obnoxious or rude that she might not feel as bad about killing. Maybe the actor. He’s a bitch. I don’t like him. Honestly, the Lucky Student’s also up there."

One of the most important staff members, and also one of the most mysterious. In any public records, Yukio Nakahara is a convenience store cashier. However, the real person by that name has been dead for nearly forty years. It is simply a name placed upon this character in order to give him an alibi for existing. He does not have memories of life more than a few years prior to the game, and has levels of strength and ability that are nearly inhuman. He was, at one point, a normal person, but has been formed by experiments and illegal technology into a living weapon. That is, mostly living.
Throughout his story, Nakahara has two major conflicts: discovering who he was, and his body literally crumbling and rotting as he lives in it. As such, he emits almost an uncanny valley feeling in the way he moves and exists. The part he plays in the killing game is similar to Iwai, removing any threats to the sanctity of the game and the staff. The two frequently work together, and both take part in certain other important aspects of the game.
Nakahara's voice needs to make the viewer uncomfortable. Not in any concrete way that a normal person might, but in a way where he sounds almost inhuman. Again, for a significant portion of his story he is essentially a walking corpse, and his voice should have a similarly eerie sense to it. A voice actor attempting to play Nakahara should be able to convincingly show a great deal of existentialism through his uncertainty with his own person, and should be able to express a very wide range of emotion. He can sound like anything, but perhaps a slightly deeper voice could work.

(Intimidating, intending to kill) “Kiyonaga Ueki." (A pause) “That is your name, correct? You were a train conductor until your participation in the abduction of sixteen Hope’s Peak students. After that, you vanished.”
(Training someone considerably younger, almost paternal) “What, you think you’re gonna kill someone just like that? This is basic level training. You’re not gonna get any clean strikes through the chest or neck. That’s TV bullshit. Real people will put up a fight. They’ll claw, they’ll scratch, they’ll do whatever they need to because they want to live. Here, hold it like this. Go for quick clean slashes. They’re gonna protect themselves with their arms- make them regret it.”
(Asking about himself, unsettled) "I have some questions. “How does Iwai always know where to find me? Even if I’m in the middle of nowhere, she always knows exactly where I am.” (Miura: "That's confidential.") “Are you tracking me? What, is it in one of my teeth? My neck? How the hell do you do it?” (Miura: "You're distressing yourself.") "I feel like I have a reason to be distressed!"

Somada is not one of the staff. However, they are certainly involved in the staff's interworkings. An outside observer, finding ways to hack and compromise many secrets of the staff, but not immediately doing anything about it. Somada is just interested in seeing where it goes, and only occasionally interacts with things in the game itself. They do, however, interact with several of the staff members directly, most often Oshiro.
Somada's voice actor functions most heavily as either a narrator for the staff or an online avatar of Somada messaging several of the staff. They need to have an air of bored playfulness to them, harboring a sick fascination with the game while not doing anything to help or harm the staff or students. Their voice can sound like anything, although androgyny is most recommended.

(Narrating, interested) “Nakahara concluded his business. He left the room. He left the cabin. He left the woods. The two men known as Takai and Kiyonaga never existed. Not their lives nor their deaths. A shot in the woods that no one ever heard never made a sound. Nakahara returned to the city.”
(Conversation online, almost stalker-esque) “I see you’re home! How was today?” (Oshiro: "Honestly? Meh.") "Aww, what a shame." (Oshiro: “How did you know when I got home?”) “Look at the building across from you! Sixth floor, closest room to the left- your left. I’m waving!”
(Talking to 'someone', very interested) "I'm really loving the footage I've been getting lately! The lawyer girl really got me thinking with that Trolley thing. So... I have a question for you. You know how it goes. Two tracks, one of them has five people tied to it. However! The other side ALSO has five people on it. This time, though, one of the five is trying to help the other four get off the track. So, who do you hit?"

Oshiro is the youngest staff member at only 19, and is (by technicality) the person who accidentally created the killing game via mentioning a death game manga. He previously worked directly under the headmaster as a chauffeur, but was transferred to the Research Department after accidentally hitting a high schooler who was riding his bike. He is considerably more normal and moral than a majority of the staff, and progressively becomes more and more stressed about all the circumstances.
He is young, nervous, and stressed by all sorts of factors, and his voice should reflect this. At times, it should make the audience realize that he is barely older than the students in the killing game itself. He experiences a wide range of emotions, and voice actors who want to play him should be able to play both his straight-man comedy and his more serious moments. Likely a higher voice, but anything can work given the right tone.

(Explaining, drinking water at a bar) “No… the headmaster never drives his own car. Plus he’s a raging alcoholic, so it’s probably for the best. I don’t really drink, anyhow. I just came to stop you guys from ending up wrapped around a lightpost or something…”
(Terrified, talking to a cop) “O-Oh, nothing…! Just dropping these guys off home…” (Officer: “You realize you didn’t fully stop at that stop sign, right?”) “I- uhm- s-sorry, sir, I’m just… it’s late and I-”
(Questioning, slightly naive) “What’s stopping the academy from just calling the cops and… arresting us?” (Kamiya: “The fact that we know what they don’t want anyone to know.”) “Hey, so I’m still really new. I have no clue what you’re referring to.” (Kamiya: "All you need to know is that wanting to play god has its toll.”) “What’s really… the point, though? I know I agreed to everything, but… what did these kids do to end up here?”
(Hie-ah-tay Kah-toh)

While Iwai and Nakahara typically function as the hitmen of the staff, there is still the issue of removing the bodies, whether they be inside or outside of the killing game. This task falls to Kato. He's a rather lax member of the staff, as he doesn't usually have much work to do. He gets along well with the rest of the team, often lightening the mood through sarcastic remarks and jokes. Despite this, he is a skilled worker that works tactfully, no matter how tense the circumstances.
His voice should reflect his cool demeanor. He's the second oldest of the staff, and as such cares less about a lot of the melodrama and personal issues within the team. A voice actor for him should be good with deadpan humor and be able to get a sort of uncaring calmness in relation to much of the killing game. A deeper voice would likely work, but there are no specifics.

(Discussing a potential murder, seemingly having thought it out prior) “Think about it. Once the motive gets introduced, who else would be trusting enough to get lured somewhere isolated? The manor’s pretty small, so it’ll be tough getting away with it. They’ll need to get creative. Nab someone’s key, lure the victim to their room, and kill them in there.”
(Cleaning up the manor while the students are in a trial, over the phone) “In a trash bag. Look, you know I’m good at what I do. When I say the foyer’s all that’s left, I mean it. Just some droplets and streaks here and there. I think you underestimate how long this takes. I had to unlock all those new rooms for the students as well.”
(Complaining, almost a little offended) “He can’t be serious… we knew things would end this way. He agreed to do this. I’m not crazy for calling him out on this, right?”
(It-soo-kee Kah-mee-yuh)
Gender: Male
Kamiya is the most active participant (other than Akabane in the form of Monokuma) in the students' lives in the killing game. Early in the game, he functions as something of a secondary host to Monokuma in order to have someone taken slightly more seriously. He introduces the idea of the killing game to the students, and is the ultimate authority over the rules of the game. He also does the morning and nighttime announcements. To the staff, he is the person most involved in the aspect of the killing game that harms Hope's Peak. He has anger issues, and has a pension for exploding at certain members of the staff at times.
He's the oldest staff member, and should sound like it. He's somewhat curmudgeonly, full of himself, and tries to be a bit more of a showman than he actually is. A voice actor for him should be able to balance both a sternness and the vibe of a slightly problematic grandfather. He should still sound realistic and be able to be scary when he needs to. There is no specific pitch for him, but he should not sound like a young man.

(Talking to Oshiro, almost trying to be as vague as possible) “All you need to know is that we have something they don’t want people knowing about. Wanting to play god has its toll.” (Oshiro:“What’s really… the point, though? I know I agreed to everything, but… what did these kids do to end up here?”) “You’ll have to excuse my… morbid sense of humor, but funnily enough… nothing at all. All of this. Everything they’ll endure. It’s simply because they were unlucky…”
(An announcement to the students, showy) “Thank you for your cooperation and patience. We can only hope your patience persists, seeing as this situation will continue to unfold rather slowly. Please direct your attention to the monitor by the stairs. I’m glad to see you’ve all taken time to explore, because this building will be your home for the foreseeable future.””
(Enraged, exploding out of nowhere) “BECAUSE I’VE SERVED THEM FOR THIRTY YEARS AND HAVE NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT! I’VE DONE EVERYTHING THEY ASKED OF ME LIKE A DOG AND EVEN NOW I’M TRAPPED IN THIS- THIS PIT! THIS HOLE IN THE WORLD WHERE THINGS GO TO BE FORGOTTEN! THE RESEARCH DEPARTMENT IS AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN A JOKE! A CRUEL JOKE TO PLAY ON THE BEST THE BEST WHO MAKE THE THE MISTAKE OF SERVING THE SELF PROCLAIMMED PINNACLE OF HOPE!”
A place for anyone who is capable or passionate about audio mixing and editing! There is going to be a lot of speaking in this project, and as such, there will be a lot of need for editing. Any voice actors who also have experience or are interested in audio editing should feel free and encouraged to audition for this as well! We will need all the help we can get.

There will be some very long videos within this series, and as such there will be legitimate need for people experienced in video editing. This should not, however, dissuade newer or more amateur video editors from giving this a shot. It will not be a complex job, simply an extensive one.
