CALLISTO: A Sci-Fi Psychological Horror Radio Play

Project Overview

CONTENT WARNING: CALLISTO deals with mature content, themes, violence and explicit language.

I know that there is something down there beneath the surface of this moon. It’s been there billions of years, entirely alone, waiting, until we arrived - and it knows that we are here.

CALLISTO is a one-off science-fiction horror radio play, with themes around paranoia and the terrible isolation of deep space. When five astronauts are sent to one of Jupiter's moons to research its sustainability for a potential colony, they discover a mysterious signal coming from below the surface, a signal which raises the suspicion that they may not be as alone as they thought.

Everyone is a moon. Everyone has a dark side.

Due to the impending uninhabitability of Earth from pollution, the International Galactic Space Agency (IGSA) sent out teams of five astronauts and scientists to the four Galilean moons of Jupiter to assess their potential for a human colony. The story focuses on the five astronauts stationed on Callisto, using a pre-landed station called CAL-BASE. They include the mission commander and geologist Dr. Samuel Gibson, comms officer and second-in-command Tom Stone, biologist Dr. Esmée Laroque, engineer Zoe Morgan and psychological officer Dr. Charlie Holmes. Also with them on their base is the artificial intelligence service CARL (Computer Assisted Response Learner).

Originally envisioned as a stage play, I decided to transfer it to an audio format, taking inspiration from science-fiction audio plays from Big Finish and works such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solaris! The radio play will run at about 50-60 minutes, and is likely to be released in the late summer or early autumn if all goes well!

  • Update #10 - Episodes!

Hello all! Been a while! Updating you all that production of CALLISTO is going pretty swimmingly! I'm over 60% done with all the scenes and I'm fairly certain I'll have the project done within the month! Another bit of more important news: due to the length of some scenes, and the time length of the project as a whole exceeding an hour and a half likely; I'll be splitting up CALLISTO into three episodes! These will be three weekly installments, and I estimate that the first episode will be sometime around the end of July - I will, of course, let you know if this changes! Here are the episode titles, as well as the current status with all of them! Episode 1 - Natural Consequences - 100% Episode 2 - An Opening - 100% Episode 3 - The Great Bear - 25% Now, you're probably wondering why I'm not releasing the first two episodes as they're complete, but I'm waiting until I have everything complete and linear before sharing it with you all. Not long now though! I'll be making another update/video soon with the release dates, as well as announcing other platforms that CALLISTO will be on! Exciting exciting! Should be in a week or two if everything goes well! Hope you're all keeping safe! -Elliot
  • Update #9 - Another trailer?

You saw right! I thought it would've taken me longer, but things went quicker than I imagined! New trailer for CALLISTO, with the cast! Share it around if you can, it would be a tremendous help! Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06fY-ueQ-IE&feature=youtu.be

THE ENGINEER

Zoe is a very outspoken, hard-working and determined person, she gets along well with others and possess a rather frank nature with things. She was reassigned for an upcoming Mars mission due to a newly developed robot drone workforce, something she is rather miffed about and often takes it out on CARL. This is not to say she isn't dependable, Zoe is exemplary in a crisis, having little room for panic.

Voice attributes: 20-35 age range, hails from Australia, with a medium to high pitched voice.

  • Sam, what did I say? Zoe, please. Calling me Morgan makes me sound dull. Pity I can't put a memo in that tin can we call an A.I.

  • Zoe to Comms. Tom, shut that music off. I don't care about your taste in music but there's no fucking need to blare it base-wide. Turn it off.

  • I’m not asking for your permission, I don’t need your permission, and unless you want to wake Tom up, costing us valuable time that could cost lives, shut up and help me!

THE COMMS OFFICER

Tom Stone is a rather brash and arrogant joker, who often makes any matter into a laughing one. Still dependable in his work, Stone values his position more than anything and yearns for a future promotion from his employers. He despises Holmes, who he thinks is a waste of space on the mission, and the only crew member to put him in his place is Gibson. Once the signal is discovered, Stone becomes increasingly unhinged, and begins to make dangerous inclinations toward his crewmates.

Voice attributes: 20-40 age range, North American accent, with a medium to high pitched voice.

  • Nada, boss. We can correspond with the other bases on Jupiter’s moons - Ganymede being the one closest to us, takes a few minutes for our messages to reach them. Though why GAN-BASE would want to listen about our shit is beyond me.

  • Receiving signal via CARL... Gotcha. Good picture, listening to you loud and clear. How's the weather out there, boss? Sunny with a chance of rain? (Laughs)

  • What? No. No no no! They can't be down! I checked them this morning, they were running perfectly! Jesus fucking Christ! Bastard! Something's blown out the array, I can't get anything out or in!

THE BIOLOGIST

Dr. Esmée Laroque is a cold, pragmatic and down-to-earth woman, having little interest in anything outside work, spending most of her time in the oxygen dome which produces air for the base. Although recommended to the mission by Gibson, Esmée wants nothing more than to return to Earth as quickly as possible, a fact she keeps from her fellow crew. When the signal emerges and the prospect of returning home dwindles, Esmée begins to crumble under the pressure.

Voice attributes: late 20s to early 30s, soft French accent and a medium pitched voice.

  • We have three weeks’ worth of breathable O2 in the auxiliaries, the dome's producing at least a week of oxygen for all five of us per three days. You have to hand it to the Agency to get some prime oxygen factories all the way out here.

  • Callisto, and all the other moons of Jupiter, are tidally locked. That means a satellite always faces the same side toward the object it orbits. So to us, Jupiter remains in the same spot in the sky. This'll also mean we'll be in the dark for at least a week and a half, as we'll either be facing away or Jupiter will be eclipsing it.

  • Nothing is down there! How can there be? I mean... no, it's not possible. It just can't be. We did scans, probes... there just can't be some form of... No. It's not possible. It isn't. It isn't!

THE GEOLOGIST

Dr. Samuel Gibson is a committed, curious and experienced scientist, yearning to be recognised in the annals of discovery. Outside of work, Gibson likes to keep an informal environment with the crew, is well-liked and respected by his fellow crew, and is known for his generosity toward others. However, once the signal is discovered, Gibson struggles to keep his crew together and eventually his own mind.

Voice attributes: 30-40 age range, with an Estuary English accent, and a medium to low pitched voice.

  • “Cryo-induced fatigue”, they call it. Like an ice-cream headache times a thousand. You’ll get over to it. Be thankful you don’t have it as bad as Tom, I think he’s still vomiting up the breakfast he had before going in.

  • Callisto’s geography is frankly quite simple. No mountains, no volcanoes or other tectonic features - only craters and multi-ring structures are the largest features on the moon. Me and Esmée took some samples to analyse the material composition of the surface, finding it quite similar element-wise to asteroids: magnesium, iron and an abundance of carbon. From the outset, we don’t believe that the surface wields any organic materials.

  • We’re the first thing this signal has reached, and if the source of it has just found us, what then? We thought we were alone, and so has it. So... what next?

THE PSYCHOLOGIST

Understanding, empathetic and philosophical, Dr. Charlie Holmes was, like Laroque, recommended for the mission by Gibson. Charlie also took part in an experimental psychological experiment involving cryo-sleep which proved a traumatic experience for her. Distrusted by Stone as an unnecessary crew member, Holmes tries to make the other crew members feel comfortable and calm, though she is put to the test once unrest begins to formulate with the crew.

Voice attributes: 30s age range, Canadian accent and medium pitched voice.

  • I’m here to make sure that the isolation we have being hundreds of millions of miles away doesn’t get to you. And it might not be important to you, but for the others, especially Esmée... it is, alright?

  • Look, I do as much work as anyone here, Tom. And you might not like me because I know more about your childhood than you do, but I’m stuck with you for eight more months. Try and get used to it. For both our sakes.

  • It's quite something, isn't? The great gas giant just... hanging there! Not moving... never moving. The Great Red Spot looking down on us like a dilated pupil, studying the strange insects inhabiting the strange metal box on the surface of its satellite...

THE A.I.

CARL (Computer Assistive Response Learner) is the in-base computer system and artificial intelligence made specifically for the research mission. Responsible for the administrative systems on the base, as well as cameras, recording and drilling equipment, CARL also serves as an assistant to everyday tasks. The only crew member to show CARL any animosity is Zoe, though the AI often doesn't recognise her sarcastic comments.

Voice attributes: I have no preferences over accent or voice pitch, only that your voice is calm, monotonous, yet authoritative. Also bear in mind your voice will be affected post-production should you be chosen!

  • Request identified. Complying... Action undertaken. Subsystems nominal. Core coolant within acceptable parameters.

  • I apologise, Gib, but I cannot find any disturbances, errors or faults with CAL-BASE's essential systems nor my own. I suggest a manual diagnostic operation by engineer Morgan.

  • Tom, I am detecting an unknown low frequency signal within the crater. Preliminary scans find that the source of signal is approximately 958 kilometres below the surface.

This role is for two people who play minor International Galactic Space Agency officials.

Voice attributes: late 20s to 30s, North American accents preferably, though I am open to other accents, no preference for voice pitches.

  • Roger that, CAL-BASE. We'll make sure the necessary requisites get to you from Europa Base.

  • Good luck, and godspeed CAL-BASE. You're doing humanity proud.

  • Thank you for the transmission CAL-BASE, we've passed it over to the board of executives and are awaiting a response from them. We suggest you sit tight and wait like we are.
