Heya everyone! This casting call here is for an audio drama reading of a somewhat popular fanfiction I write for Persona 5 Royal titled The Mask Shatters, currently awaiting a 10th chapter.

The Mask Shatters is a fanfiction set in the world of Persona by Atlus, specifically in the timeline of Persona 5 Royal, taking a third person view of an original character named Arthur Frederick Williams who is, like many characters of Persona, fighting many personal demons that society has thrusted onto him.


To summarize the story, Arthur finds himself heading to Tokyo on a foreign exchange program from the US. Everything seems as normal as it can get, until his chronic nightmares are replaced by vivid dreams of a bizarre, otherworldly old man beckoning him to "Find the Phantom Thieves" before "Your fate meets its conclusion". Arthur, a logical and intelligent young man, does not pay credence to such an event.... until it becomes clear the Phantom Thieves, as fantastical as they sound, are as real as himself.

Be warned! There are massive spoilers in this story! If you wish to play Persona 5 spoiler-free or have not played it but wish to do so one day without spoilers, DO NOT AUDITION!


Unlike most fanfictions, The Mask Shatters does not seek to be about the main cast of Persona 5 Royal, but instead wishes to follow an alternate universe centered around Arthur and his experiences with Igor, Joker, Queen, Shadows, the Metaverse, and his personal demons. The main cast of Persona 5 Royal are heavily featured, as it is a fanfiction, but it is not about them. It's all about Arthur.


Knowledge on the Persona series is NOT REQUIRED. But, it is recommended. To save a time and space on writing out a huge description, I will instead leave a link to the persona series wiki below if you wish to brush up on it:

Roles are listed in the order of importance in the story.


Unless you have a WIDE RANGE of voices you can provide, auditions placed will only be cast for one character. To cut down on disappointment and confusion, please audition for the character you MOST want.


A character document also exists, and is given only to those who are casted so they may review their character and others for preparation of the story.


Non-Canon characters do not have a picture associated due to them being OCs. I am in the process of getting art done for them but that will take A LONG time as of right now, so I will do my best to describe them in the role.


All characters listed are characters ready to be voiced RIGHT NOW. This casting call will be constantly updated as the story progresses. Please follow the casting call to keep track of it in case a role you would like becomes available.


Due to the nature of Persona, with most characters being Japanese, name pronunciations WILL BE PROVIDED in the role.



VOICE REQUIREMENTS

Many characters introduced are OCs, and as such casting will be more lenient on them than for any canon characters BUT will have requirements nonetheless. But for canon characters, there will be special instructions and you will have to follow them specifically.

Multiple takes are encouraged (2-3) for each audition line but NOT required!

You must follow the voicing instructions crystal clearly. Any audition with mess-ups on specific instructions w/o any attempts to fix WILL BE disqualified.


Usually, as stated, only the canon characters will have specific instructions. In fact, for these characters, I will simply provide audition lines, a brief description of them and their role in the game, and examples of their voice so you know what to go for.


Audition Requirements:

-Crisp, clean audio. No hums*, pops, hisses, or background noise. Any audition with these found inside WILL BE disqualified!

                 *Hums, if distant enough to be hardly noticeable, can pass auditioning ONLY if the voice actor can remove them when asked.


-Show emotion! Any audition without emotion or effort WILL BE disqualified!

-Communication preferences are up to the voice actor. You must alert me how you wish to communicate, otherwise it will be assumed you wish to communicate through Discord.

-Have fun! Persona is definitely one of the easiest things to write for and have fun with at the same time! I'm sure you guys will find it the same!

You are the narrator. You read literally everything in this story that isn't in quotations or otherwise stated by me. You cannot be silly or otherwise not serious, for it is your job to communicate to the viewer/reader the situation occurring, the characteristics of one person, the scenery, etc etc.


I would prefer a deeper than mid but not too deep voice to do this, like when people narrated stories such as The Most Dangerous Game in ways to evoke drama and suspense. Be like that.

To summarize, you must be able to convey drama and suspense in every thing you say in this story. Even when there doesn't seem to be anything dramatic going on, your voice will keep the reader interested because sometime could very well happen at any moment. That is your job.

Canon Character

Name Pronunciation- Ren    Ahhh-Mahh-Meee-Ahh

Ren Amamiya is the protagonist of Persona 5/Royal and its spin-offs. He is characterized as a decent person with a genuinely good morality, but very quiet and even acting like a background character in his normal life. A characteristic of his is that he can also change his personality to fit his situation whenever the need arises, which generally classifies him as a sociopath. But, instead of antagonizing others and generally causing trouble, Ren uses his ability to help others and bring societal change to Japan.

  • I'm Ren Amamiya. I'm a 16 year old student who was wrongfully accused of a crime that didn't occur, and as such had to be re-located to Tokyo, Japan to continue my education. I'm a strong, silent type who can change personalities on a fly to account for my situation. Some may call that being a sociopath, and they may be right. But I'm still a good guy and I use my abilities to bring comfort to other people around me and solve problems.


    Also, I'm the only person who can save the world now. Just a fun fact.

Canon Character

Name Pronunciation: Mah-Koh-Toe   Nee-Jee-Mah

Makoto Niijima is a third year high school student living in Tokyo, Japan. She isn't a very big part of the story until the second act, of which there are about 8 in the base game, 9 in Royal. She is toted before her first major appearance as a highly intelligent, a very diligent, and a very disliked student in the academy. Disliked because, as her role as Student Council President makes it seem, she is seen as a teacher's pet and wannabe detective like her big sister, Sae.

Despite the fact she seems like a wannabe, she is shown to be a very shrewd detective in her own right as she is set on the path of determining the identity of the Phantom Thieves, who are none other than the protagonist and his friends. She is able to correctly and accurately deduce their identities within their first few meetings and is able to hold them at ransom at one point before deciding she had a lot in common with them and join their team.

  • I'm Makoto Niijima, I'm a 17 year old student living in Tokyo, Japan, but I turn 18 soon after the story of Persona 5 begins. I'm a rather intelligent person who loves the boyish side of life such as aikido and yakuza movies but I hide this stuff because society looks down upon it. When I actually become relevant to the plot of Persona 5, I am a hardass antagonist but I eventually come to an understanding with the other main characters and join their team as, *ahem*.... The Fist of the Phantom Star....

Canon Character

Name Pronunciation - Exactly as it sounds

Morgana is an otherwordly being, to say the least. First encountered by the protagonist of Persona 5 in the first dungeon as a monster cat, he becomes a valid ally and teammate throughout the rest of the game. An amnesiac cat that hates being called a cat that believes he lost his true form, he is a healer and is easily outclassed by the other healers you acquire as you play the game - especially Makoto when you get to Futaba's palace, but has his uses in areas that the other do not reach.

Character currently has only a few lines in the current chapters. A more in-depth explanation will be given when cast.

  • I'm Morgana. Some call me a monster cat, but I am NOT a cat! I'm simply a human who lost his true form... I think.... I'm a solid party member and a healer, although I'm outclassed by the other healers by the time Makoto joins the party as she is the only one who can learn anti-despair skills naturally. I'm also very comical and I'm basically both the mentor of Ren/Joker and the mascot of Persona 5...


    Also, I'm a simp for Lady Ann... Get over it.

Canon Character

Name Pronunciation: Ee-Gore

Igor is a very well-known face in the Persona franchise, having appeared in every main game to date. He is, basically, an omnipotent, god-like being that trains the main character to stand up against a coming doom. In Persona 5, he is in essence kidnapped by a fake and imprisoned elsewhere while the fake performs his normal role, but instead with the intention to screw over the main character and his friends.

Long time fans of Persona will note the main differences that clue the player in on the identity of the Fake Igor are in the beginning of the game of Persona 5, at the Protagonist's and Igor's first meeting, where he speaks with a deeper voice than before, and says "Welcome to my Velvet Room" instead of the normal "Welcome to the Velvet Room".

  • I am Igor, but in reality I am a fake puppet created by my true form in an attempt to rig a game I created in my own favor. The Real Igor is imprisoned in another undisclosed realm, and I plot to bring ruin to the world. I manipulate the main character of Persona 5, Ren, into bringing about this ruin.

Description:

Role - Arthur's teacher

Voice Range - Preferably Low with age. Sakutaro is an elderly man.


To summarize Nakada Sakutaro, he is a crotchety, hostile elderly man working as a teacher at Shujin Academy. He is the teacher to Arthur, Ichisake, and Makoto and is generally and openly hostile towards everyone and anyone. His toxicity, however, is due to his past experiences and own personal trauma. Having been a conscripted young Japanese soldier in World War 2, he had seen some terrifying sights - such as hand-to-hand bayonet combat with American Marines, war crimes, torture, blood, gore, and explosions - and even killed quite a few Marines. These Marines, their faces a sight he remembers every time he closes his eyes, are the main factors towards his toxicity.


However, he sympathizes with Arthur, if only secretly, with the plight he suffers with rumors and hate. Having been an accomplice to many war crimes, he keeps his Imperial service a secret in fear of retribution from the new generations he lives amongst.


In attempt to cope with his trauma, pain, and the crimes he committed, he often visits the local Christian church - where both his Christian comrades and enemies were buried - to atone and pay his respects and even began worshiping Confucianism over Shintoism to try and find peace in the battleground that is his mind.

  • I'm Nakada Sakutaro. You won't like me. Trust me. I won't like you, after all. You're just an inconvenience to me that I have to read this... Eegh... Fine...

    I'm a former WW2 Imperial Soldier turned teacher for Shujin Academy. At age 78, my life is almost over. I've done a lot of stuff, seen a lot of carnage. Honestly, everyone wonders why I can't be happy. Well you don't understand the things I've seen and done. I spend my life and my days trying to atone for a history that you - the new generation - probably haven't even been taught about!

    Well, I suppose history is written by the victor, after all...

Role - Legal Guardian of the protagonist of the fanfiction

Voice Range - Mid - He is a middle aged man, after all, without a very deep voice. He is in no way, shape or form, close to a vocal range of Charlie Day, so he is a comfortable mid.


To summarize Himura Arinori, he is a somewhat wealthy individual living in Shibuya who is a close friend of Arthur and his American family. He agreed, in the story, to take care of Arthur during his stay in Tokyo and does his best to make sure the American enjoys his stay. He plays a heavy role in the story because of that, but in the early chapters there is little to be seen of him due to his constant work schedule.

  • I'm Himura Arinori. I'm a 39 year old Japanese man living in Tokyo, Japan working at the corporate HQ of a fast food conglomerate to make ends meet. I do rather well, raking in enough money to even have purchased a faberge egg! However, I'm always constantly working and I'm lucky to get a day off every two weeks. I act as Arthur's legal guardian during his exchange in the fanfiction, and I am in no way, shape or form, a canon character in Persona.


    Also, I'm in debt to the Yakuza. Fun times.

Name Pronunciation: Ahn  Tah-Kah-Mah-Kee

Ann is a character that many players can recognize right off the bat. Her blue eyes, blonde hair, and general foreign looks are a far cry from the norm many citizens of Japan are used to. She can easily be spotted from a crowd of people, despite being Japanese herself. She is shown to be a very fun-loving, sweet girl with a hidden vengeful side that rarely comes out - such as when she spares the first antagonist in the game in favor of letting him suffer and rot in prison instead with the knowledge that his horrible acts cannot be undone - she is an avid lover of sweets and things that are generally considered girly while at the same time very righteous in her own form of justice and brave enough to stand up for others when they need it.

She is the first Phantom Thief the protagonist meets in the game, moments before the player meets the first friend they'll make in the entire game.

  • I'm Ann Takamaki, a 16 year old Japanese/American student living in Tokyo, Japan. I was introduced fairly early on and it's very obvious the developers intended to push me off as a romantic interest on the MC when I was introduced, but then they gave up when they created Makoto. I love all things girly, really, and am nowhere near as tomboyish as Makoto. I love eating sweets whenever I can, shitting on Ryuji when he makes a stupid remark, modeling, and otherwise just being a valuable team member to everyone else with my healing abilities and decent DPS capabilities.

  • (Said in Battle, Ren is about to be killed - Rallying her team) Are we just going let them kill Joker?! I won't let it happen!

  • (Said in regular conversation) Honestly, what we did in the metaverse.... There's no better justice.

To summarize Kiwa Eguchi, she a sweet young woman, aged 24, who works at Okumura Foods as a customer service manager and a co-worker of Himura Arinori. Unlike most characters in this story, she does not suffer or deal with personal demons as she is not a direct confidant of Arthur, the main character, but rather Himura's love interest. While she deals with no personal demons, she does suffer from stress and the ever-approaching fear of being fired or worse from Okumura Foods.

Worse, because she has a distinct feeling the CEO is behind some of the "accidents" with his competitors.

  • I'm Kiwa Eguchi. I'm a customer service manager for Okumura Foods and I work alongside Arthur's guardian, Himura Arinori. I'm also the latters love interest, and while I am well aware of that, I do not acknowledge his feelings nor reciprocate/deny any feelings. It's not because I am a sadist, but rather fearful of the CEO of Okumura Foods firing both of us for fraternizing with one another. In truth, I am attracted to Himura and I adore Arthur with a passion, although I have not yet met him.


    I become a more central character - like the rest of Arthur's "confidants" when the story begins to pick up around chapter 11, which is not yet - at this time - out.

Canon Character

Name Pronunciation: Koe-Bai-Yah-Kaw-Wa


Principal Kobayakawa is the principal of Shujin Academy, the school of Ren and most of the Phantom Thieves bar Futaba and Yusuke. Right off the bat, he is painted as a genuine jerk and as one concerned only for himself and the school's reputation, even going so far as to threaten Ren with expulsion upon a single wrong-doing the second he shows up for school for the first time. He is severely unqualified for his job and only got his position due to the fact he is business partners with the main antagonist of the game, who used his connections to get Kobayakawa his position. Later in game, Kobayakawa is assassinated by his business partner when he attempts to go turncoat and reveal everything about a conspiracy that both Kobayakawa was involved in and his business partner is the head of.

  • I am Principal Kobayakawa. I am the morbidly obese, eggman-looking principal of Shujin Academy. I don't have many physical appearances outside of plot-related cutscenes and I simply serve as a tool to begin the third act of the game and set in motion the late-game plot in the early game. I don't have a single care for the students under my watch and simply care for my own reputation and that of my school's and, because of that, I am really hated within the student body.

To summarize Patrick Williams and his role in this story, he is a native Irish character that will appear - most often - in nightmares and dreams that the protagonist, Arthur, experiences. Being the biological father of Arthur, his actions and words during Arthur's development had the biggest impact on his life and mental state - which is horrible in the beginning of the story. Late in the story, Patrick will make an appearance to make amends with his son and set things right.

  • I'm Patrick Williams. I am the father of the protagonist of this story, Arthur. Not much to say about me, really. I'm not gonna be seen for a very long time and the most you'll ever hear from me is in nightmare scenes, which'll happen throughout the story on a regular basis. I'm hinted at being a bad person and one of the causes of Arthur's mental issues, but really I'm just a victim of circumstance and Arthur hasn't seen yet that I haven't ever caused him harm.

To summarize Ciara Williams, she takes the role of an abusive - both emotionally and sometimes physically - mother of Arthur. Written out of personal experience from the author, her existence is solely to give reasonable, realistic credence to Arthur's personal problems, demons, and his mental instability. As both parents are painted as the bad guys in Arthur's life, his mother is the one who causes the most mischief and trouble, setting off the events leading up the story long before the main event that acted as the final straw in Arthur's mind.


This role has a special importance to the author, despite her small role in the story audio-wise. Therefore, selection will be picky here.

  • I'm Ciara Williams - the personal antagonist of Arthur, my son. I am his mother, and am the direct reason this story has been set into motion. To make a long story short, I am a horrible person who - honestly - was created so Arthur's personal demons, mental problems, and more would not only make sense but also be realistic in today's climate. As a native Irishwoman, I have a natural, thick Irish accent but am also very mentally unstable. I will always appear in dreams and nightmares that Arthur experiences and these never will be positive. Whoever voices me, please be aware of that.

Has less than five appearances in the story and they will be spread out. Keep this in mind when you audition.

This is a permanent position.

  • I'm the Chief Clerk of Okumura Foods. I'll have probably only three scenes in this entire story, and the final one will definitely be in Okumura's palace. Keep this in mind when voicing me!
