You Shou Yan Manhua - English Voice Over
Project Overview
You Shou Yan (also known as Fabulous Beasts) is a Chinese manhua and donghua created and updated by Xue Xia Mao Yao Zi. It centers around a variety of mythical beasts living in the mountains of Yunnan in our current time period. With 1000+ chapters, and more still being released weekly, it introduces a large variety of characters, explores multiple time periods, and explores the lore of how the mythical beasts got where they are now!
I personally discovered You Shou Yan through the animated show, and have fallen in love with it since! In wanting to show that love, I have decided that I would like to do an english dub and voice-over of the manhua chapters! With such a massive cast of characters, I felt it was only appropriate to seek out more voice actors to help bring this wish to reality!
Wait- if there are 1000+ chapters, and many characters, why are only 9 roles being filled right now? Well, that all comes down to how production will work! Specifically, we're working in cycles, and I don't want to cast for characters far too early before their cycle! Here's the process:
Scripts are written for one cycle of chapters, which is currently six chapters. These scripts will be written a few weeks before voice acting for the cycle is set to begin.
When scripts for a cycle are released, voice actors will have ten days to record their lines for the cycle.
The remaining four days will be spent editing the six chapters into shorts / videos, which will be released a few weeks later on YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Twitter/X, and BlueSky.
The reason behind a cycle being completed a few weeks before its release is to account for unforeseen situations or any potential delays. Not including the scriptwriting, a cycle will typically be completed within two weeks, or 14 days, and will account for two weeks worth of video releases. One on Monday, one on Wednesday, and one on Friday, all weekly.
As for how that relates to casting, there will be a new casting call every four weeks that will feature characters, whether main, secondary, tertiary, alternates, or just outright extras. These casting calls will account for the next two cycles worth of newly introduced characters and extras! It is designed this way so that newly casted VA's will not have to wait long to get started! The earlier of the two cycles would start their VA work within a week of the casting call completing, and the latter of the two cycles would start two and a half weeks after being cast.
How will these roles work for you?
There are four different types of roles, each that would cater to different availability types.
Main Characters are classified as characters that have appeared in over 150 chapters throughout the manhua! Two of the main characters being cast in this call, Sibuxiang and Tianlu, have both appeared in over 400 chapters, meaning they show up in roughly 40% of all chapters! VA's applying for Main Character roles should expect to be needed very frequently, as there are very few chapters in the manhua that do not feature at least one main character.
Secondary Characters are classified as characters that have appeared in 20-149 chapters throughout the manhua! These characters can often be considered main characters in certain arc's of the manhua, but are not always on the screen. Two of the secondary characters being cast in this call, JinJiao and YinJiao, appear in roughly 100 chapters, though this does not account for chapters where one brother appears, and the other does not. They show up frequently early in the manhua, and then sporadically beyond that point. Meanwhile Bajin, another secondary character, only appears in 38 chapters, though this does not account for chapters where his brother Erliang may show up independently. Bajin may show up semi-often early in the manhua, and then have long stretches where he may only show up for a chapter or two. He only recently regained relevancy in the early 1000's. VA's applying for Secondary Characters need to be more on guard, as their character may have parts and cycles where they are fairly relevant and used frequently, but for the most part beyond that will be needed sporadically.
Tertiary Characters are classified as characters that have appeared in 2-19 chapters throughout the manhua. This can mean many things - either they are recently introduced and on their way to becoming a secondary character, or they were really only important for a certain amount of chapters. This could even extend to a background character showing up more than once throughout the manhua. While there are currently no Tertiary Characters being cast during this cycle, there may be in future cycles. VA's applying for Tertiary Characters may occasionally need to do a little bit of work for the occasional cycle. There is also the chance of tertiary characters that are important for a little bit but don't show up much at all after that point.
Extras are speaking roles that are likely only needed for one chapter, or maybe two. Once they have submitted their speaking lines, they are not needed to complete that role any longer.

In his debut appearance in present day, Tianlu is a brash, hot-headed and rebellious little beast who has little respect for most anyone but himself. He is very bold and overconfident in himself, regarding himself as an auspicious beast, and the only Pixiu in existence. He is also quite easily-annoyed when things don't go his way, and can come off as selfish at times. Behind his prideful exterior however, he does care deeply about those he loves and cares about, willing to fight for and protect them.
Despite his vast age, being an ancient beast, he has a very child-like personality, always energetic and wanting to play, as well as possessing a cheeky and mischievous side. This part of his personality also makes him act naïve, if not reckless, for most of the time, being a carefree spirit with not much fear against the world or the unknown (as he is overconfident that his skills and abilities will handle any conflict he faces no problem). He also has a generally very childlike quality in his worldviews and manners, and his naivety also makes him oblivious to certain things.
He does not tend to hold very complicated opinions about others, and makes his attitudes clear and visible, be them of affection or disdain. He is easy to please and befriend if kindness and praise is shown to him, feeding into his ego. Despite his negative traits, he does prove to be a worthy friend and/or colleague, able to act responsible when he wants to, being kind and amicable to his friends, and being determined in his duties.

As an Alternste Form, you are accepting that you may be needed in any chapter that the normal form of your character is in. You essentially act as a secondary character, as you may be needed randomly for any lines. This role is treated with similar importance to the normal version of the role, so please consider this an extention of that role.

Whenever he transforms into his "true form", his pride and ego further increases, as he makes his personality reflect his mighty appearance. He can also act more mature and serious in this form, and present a more aggressive and threatening side of himself. Despite that, he's still the same Pixiu as usual, and can still act childish and shameless while in this form.
As the larger version of Tianlu, one main factor for casting will be how closely this voice can gel with whoever we end up casting as Tianlu. This means that Auditions here will be impacted by the casting of that role.

Sibuxiang is a level-headed and pragmatic type of beast. Acting as the mature adult among the main cast, at surface he comes off as responsible and disciplined, especially when acting as a representative of the Heavenly Court, and managing his store and its employees. His serious demeanor also gives him a bit of a short temper, being quick to be frustrated by his surroundings when things don't go well, especially with any disruptive antics involving himself or his employees and other beasts they're acquainted with.
Past his stern and sophisticated attitude, Sibuxiang actually possesses many negative traits to his personality. He has quite obsessed with money, being greedy and frugal, and not wanting to spend much of the Luren Dian shop's budget, and would get uneasy once he finds the shop or its goods are damaged, or having to spend any money after a certain threshold. He also likes to take advantage of any opportunities that will either save money, or earn him more money.
Despite his duty to the Heavenly Court, due to having been in leisurely retirement for quite awhile then being immediately thrust back into work, Sibuxiang often acts very lazy, and is not verily motivated to do anything that is not worth his time. He's also subtly selfish and only really does things on his own accord, usually acting inconsiderate, usually only really tending to requests if he's threatened, or if they match his interests, such as when there's high payment.
Amidst his carefree and collected personality, he's also often aloof and deflecting, hiding his emotions and thoughts behind a mask, figuratively and literally. He's rarely shown to be actually upset or afraid, and even then, they are short bursts, quickly reverting back to a carefree and relaxed demeanor.
Although he hides it well behind his figurative mask, Sibuxiang cares very deeply for the people he cares about, not wanting to get them in trouble or hurt, especially if he was involved in their conflict, becoming extremely anxious and panicked internally, despite his coolheaded demeanor on the surface.

Tuye at first is a rabbit with not much personality, just a normal mortal rabbit living on the moon who was evicted by his own mother. From that point on he became much more cautious and resourceful.
In current times he is infatuated with Sibuxiang after a strange encounter with him and Pipi at a bar, where the three of them got drunk. Tuye decides to move near Sibuxiang to Yunnan valley.
He is a workaholic and is quite generous to the beasts within the Yunnan Mountain Range.

Golden Horn is considerably more lazy, cares less to work for his horn to return to the heavens. He also has more of an appetite and will eat more than his younger brother. Despite his negative traits, he is also rather protective of his younger brother.
Since their banishment into the mortal world, both are scared of the new world around them, especially due to their small and fragile current forms.

Silver Horn, on the other hand, is more considerate, more diligent and more frugal with the seeds and acorn supply the two have. He has a hot temper likely as a result of being the more-responsible of the duo, and can often get angry at his older brother for slacking.
Since their banishment into the mortal world, both are scared of the new world around them, especially due to their small and fragile current forms.

Four Kiis a cat dragon, similar to his brother who is a dragon cat. Four Kilos is on the more smug side, tackling on that dragon pride as heirs to the throne, despite not having met their father personally. He not only speaks for himself, but will also translate what his brother, Two Taels, is saying, since he only speaks in meows. They work as employees of Sibuxiang's shop, but are regularly swamped helping take care of their numberous siblings at home.
