Where Lie Woodsmen (SHORT)

Where Lie Woodsmen (SHORT)

Project Overview

SUPERNATURAL / HORROR / COMEDY CARTOON

Woodsmen has been in development for years, but I’m currently enrolled in animation classes where I might get the opportunity to make a brief proof-of-concept storyboard and maybe some shorts! These will be posted onto Youtube once finished.

ABOUT

Welcome to Cradlepine, a small town by the Rockies circled by forest and filled to the brim with bible-thumpers. Its history spins into folklore shared by backyard bonfire, superstition hanging heavy in the air.

When kids from their local highschool start disappearing one by one, self-made social rejects Quinn and Eira follow the paper trail past urban legends & eldritch horrors to a mystery that begins far closer than either of them would like to admit.

COMMUNICATION

Discord is the go-to. If necessary, you can send any questions here: aramarisbelow@ gmail.com

If hired, you are not expected to be socially active in the server. If at any point we’ll need to form another communication arrangement, please inform me!

WHEN WILL I HEAR BACK?

I’ll be looking over any submissions throughout the next few months. The project deadline is set very far as a precaution; I'm unsure how tight deadlines will be and am looking for VAs in advance to avoid rushing any lines. Final casting will begin within at least a couple weeks before I begin storyboarding, so please be prepared. Characters may be cast + the project may be closed a few weeks early. Updates will be provided prior.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Woodsmen is a very small indie project just getting onto its feet. I am not a professional, but as I go on to produce higher quality work I’m very excited to get the hang of audio design and working with VAs. Shorts won’t be longer than 2-3 minutes. As of right now, there are no plans to produce a pilot or full episodes. In the future, one-shot comics might be made and willing VAs may volunteer to do short dubs.

This is something pretty unpolished and silly! Have fun with it!

A FEW ASKS

- Must be 16+ to audition, ideally 18+

- Discord account

- Clean recordings with a decent setup (no air conditioners in the background, no fans, no static, etc). Don't add effects to your lines

- Actors who reflect the characters’ real-life identities are extra-encouraged to audition! In the end, talent takes priority, but representation in casting remains super important to me

- While SFW, Woodsmen is intended for slightly older audiences. PG13, roles may include light cussing.

This story may cover topics such as: religious trauma, occult, dysphoria, and implications of queer repression & struggles. Please follow at your own discretion.

Latest Updates

  • Casting Begins!

Hi! It’s been a while since our casting call got out, but after listening to so many delightful auditions, we’ve got our top picks for Quinn & Eira. If you got the part, you can expect to be contacted within the next week.

Once again, huge huge thanks to everyone who threw their hat in the ring. While it was difficult picking just 2 out of 20+ people, we’d love to reach out to some VAs for other roles down the line. Keep an eye on your email inbox!

That being said: For now we’ll be focusing on producing the first short, but eventually another casting call will likely be posted for a second batch of major characters.

P.S. genuinely didn’t expect this to work out as nicely as it has, but it really is surreal having this project I’ve loved for so long get closer and closer to being a Thing.

    Well wishes <3

  • Littler Note - Accents and Language

One more thing: For both characters, you may notice Tagalog and Haitian Creole + French respectively listed as languages. These are mostly important if you’d like to reprise your role, and why casting VAs who understand these characters means so much to me.

Eira tends to use Tagalog in exclamation, when he’s upset, or in referral to a family member (Kuya, Nanay, etc.) He also likes using slang and insults … a bit too much if you ask me.

Quinn on the other hand doesn’t speak Creole or French unless in conversation with his mom (who often scolds him in both).

I don’t imagine Quinn & Eira with prominent accents, but you can feel free to take a shot at it! I’d prefer to hear it in a separate take (ABC ABC).

Everyone is always welcome since I can’t afford to be all that selective, but bonus points to those who can either speak these languages or are willing to learn a few pronunciations (:

  • Deadline, Extra Audition Lines, Etc.

Hi there! In short, the project deadline’s been moved up by about two weeks, landing it on March 15th. I figured I’d get maybe 5 or 6 auditions throughout the whole span of 2 months—boy was I WRONG. Very quickly I was surprised by a bunch of talent, and I could not be more grateful for any interest taken in my little passion project. I appreciate every single person so far who’s taken time out of their week to record.

That being said, apologies for any confusion if anyone has received notifications about their audition. I was unaware if CCC gave those out for managing submissions, and was under the impression that it was solely for keeping personal tabs LOL. I am still very much under the decision-making process and nothing is definite around this time.

In the future, more spots may open up for different characters; there are still four major supporting roles (plus a few minor ones) I’m considering casting for later shorts. If you aren’t considered for Quinn or Eira, you might still be asked to try out for another down the line!

P.S. if you’re thinking of applying, you might wanna check out the links attached to each role. There are visual references for both of the characters, plus some extra lines you can give a go if you wanna be extra thorough.

Thanks and hats off to you if you’ve read this whole thing. Final casting will be hard, but I look forward to it. Woodsmen is a project that is so, so dear to me, and got me through a lot. It’s a vision I intend on bringing to life, and I’m very excited to have the chance of working with people who can help.

Take care & if you’re planning on auditioning, have fun!

Ever since childhood, this boy-detective has found solace in the strange. Quinn's got a hunger for knowledge and a sense of justice stronger than his self-preservation instincts. He's clever, but you know what they say about cats and curiosity. You're lucky if he takes a hint ... or a break.

Quinn will do whatever's needed to get to the bottom of his current case: the disappearance of Pine Point High's seniors. No matter if it's made him Cradlepine's resident conspiracy freak — the red-thread-and-corkboard kid. Everyone who won't believe is beneath him! Especially that moron, Eira, for all that he picks on him for it.

- Character is 14 years old

- ENCOURAGED: Trans & Black voice actors. Quinn is FTM and Haitian. He is also autistic-coded!

- SEE: Craig Williams (Craig of the Creek), Kai (The Hollow), Branch (Trolls), Riz Gukgak (D20: Fantasy High)

You do NOT need to sound like the above examples to audition! These are just references for inspiration as well as groundwork for how the character’s voice was originally imagined.

Eira's life hasn't been the same since his older brother Sam went missing, but he'll be damned if he has to talk about it. Really, he's been rough around the edges since the move to Cradlepine. He used to be on Boy Scouts. Now all his first-aid knowledge goes to wrapping ominous bandages around paper cuts (a man's accessory, as he puts it).

Eira likes to talk like a doomsday survivalist — "Trust no one!" It must be all the action-adventure Western comics he reads during detention. Usually, a punishment for getting into a petty scuffle with Quinn.

- Character is 14 years old

- ENCOURAGED: Asian/SEAsian voice actors. Eira is Filipino, and you may be asked to pronounce brief and simple Tagalog if you choose to return VA! He‘s also coded as having ADHD

- SEE: Wilbur (Meet The Robinsons), Soren (The Dragon Prince), Duncan (Total Drama Island)
