What Are You? A psychological horror short film
Project Overview
It is morning already. School, in its dreadful glory, is not this important. Teeth brushed, half breakfast nibbled, other matters completed zoned out. “Good morning, Ma. Have a good day at work. Bye, Pa.”
What is this?
This is an unpaid project looking for interested individuals to collaborate with. This is a short-term commitment, but if this goes well, you may be called again (up to you to participate). Teasers in YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok will lead into a short film. The script for the movie has been fully prepared. This is a psychological horror piece exploring the human mind. A teenager with anhedonia faces multiple individuals representing different parts of her brain.
Who am I looking for?
At the moment, I am looking for interested voice actors who can commit to making a short film. For each role, I may also choose to select a backup voice actor. I will only recruit 2d animators and artists in the future if I need them to help me to ensure that they can complete their work on time without having to wait.
No AI submissions will be considered for this project. I am looking for humans, not robots.
Are there any requirements?
Yes, there are. You have to be over 14 to audition, and willing to take part in a project with these themes:
Talk about Death and Life
Anhedonia
Horror
Philosophy
Suicidal Ideation
Beginners are welcome. Please ensure that the background noise is not overtly noticeable, and do not edit it and instead send raw audio. I want to listen to your own voice and not technology’s. If I think you may be suitable for other roles, I will contact you. Auditions with 2 to 3 takes for each line are more likely to be selected than auditions with 1 take, as that shows me that you are willing to retake when needed.
You are allowed to audition for more than one role.
What do you get from participating in this project?
You will be credited in What Are You?.
You will be allowed to use recordings and the movie to showcase your voice acting and/or writing experience, as long as you state a link to the Youtube/Tiktok/Instagram channel (exact channel will be announced after production) it will be posted on and add in all the credits (not necessarily in the video itself).
You can get a recommendation on Casting Call Club. For this, you only need to send a simple request via discord.

Extensions will be given as needed. I understand that sometimes life may disrupt availability as I am a voice actor myself, but please try to follow the deadlines as I wish to follow the schedule.

Voice Actor
The main character of this story. Suffers from Anhedonia. For this role, spoken dialogue and internal thoughts should be different slightly so the audience knows which is which.
Age: 13-19 years
Personality: Detached, but suppressing emotions when the uncanny occurs
Voice notes: Monotonous, and when something disturbing occurs, with underlying panic

Voice Actor
A bird, representing the awareness of Narrator.
Age: Ageless
Gender: Preferably male
Looks: A bird. A pattern similar to this.
Voice notes: Mysterious, sounding like it always hides something, and at the same time like it is telling the truth, forlorn (just not pessimistic) and waiting to see what happens, observer, ‘awareness’. Speaks in poem, has a rhythm.

I would like the voice to be raspy. This will aid in making the voice sound like a bird. The voice should not be only mysterious though. Please remember that it is waiting to see what would happen (curious/looking forward). It would be nice if that was also part of the voice.

I am extremely sorry to those who have already auditioned for Sapsucker. Your auditions helped me locate the significant flaws in my poetry. I have now edited it to work better, with the ones that do not properly rhyme left intentional. I do not wish to judge you unfairly based on harder notes and lines, so please record and submitted an updated audition if you wish to voice Sapsucker.

Voice Actor
Extremely minor character who is still important to this show (less than 10 sentences). Represents Narrator’s Doubt.
Age: 20-30 years old
Gender: Female
Looks: Transitions from the ‘generic’ mother (motherly voice, calm, pleasant) to a horror equivalent (animators choice)
Voice notes: At the start, sounds like the ‘generic’ mother, with hints of being creepier. At the end after Narrator accept what ‘Mother’ is, cunning, spooky, and manipulative instead.

As this is such a minor role, the recording from the selected audition will directly be used. There will be no need to record anything else. However, if the selected individual is using discord, they will be added into the server/chat so that they can be updated on the project’s progress.
