Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception Fandub

Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception Fandub

Project Overview

What is this project?

Utawarerumono, translated literally as "the ones of whom legends are sung", is a visual novel/SRPG series, with a story that follows the journey of an amnesiac thrust into an unfamiliar world of mystic secrets, brutal wars, dangerous political maneuvering, and lots and lots of lovingly-described food and drink.

The aim of this project is to cast an English fandub of a majority of the game's scenes, skipping over sections heavy on the visual fanservice (and therefore of little consequence to an audio production!) The scope of the project will be flexible at first, beginning with Mask of Deception, the first game in the localized duology. More roles will gradually be added as production moves on, and we can safely commit to progressing and producing more and more from the game's story. If all goes well, and we finish Mask of Deception, we will move onto the script for Mask of Truth--the second half of the grander saga, featuring the same cast of characters, expanding some previously-minor characters into deeper, more significant roles, and introducing some new faces.

How many characters are in this project?

The current count for the Mask of Deception cast totals 50, counting named minor characters who only have one or two scenes, and excluding extras such as nameless shopkeepers and members of Ukon's mercenary group. The current cast list includes only four characters, but will be re-opened and extended as the story progresses to ensure that nobody is cast early and left with nothing to do.

How long is the script?

Being a visual novel, the full scope of both game's scripts is VERY long, approx 120 hrs average play time between two games! Lead roles will be demanding in volume, though our aim is to keep schedules reasonable for everyone, and set production milestones based on individual arcs.

Audition Rules:

1) All auditionees must have good audio quality. Please avoid background static, appliances running in the background, muffled audio, and recording in large rooms with a lot of echo. Please do not use any filters or voice-altering effects in your audition unless they are to reduce external noise.

2) This project will require shouting, screaming, yelling, crying, etc. If you plan on auditioning, please be sure that you are capable of doing so!

3) Please have an up-to-date and frequently used email address or Discord so that we may keep in contact with you. If we send out a call for lines and a voice actor does not respond up to a month after the deadline with their status, the role will be recast!

4) Please do not audition if you are not prepared to dedicate yourself to this project for an extended amount of time. See above note on project length.

5) Actors are welcome and encouraged to audition for multiple roles. If you aren't cast for a role initially, remember that this project will have many characters, and it is possible that we may reach out to you at a later date to have you audition for a role we feel suits you.

6) When auditioning, please do not go upwards of two takes per line. If you're uncertain of direction for a particular line, feel free to ask!

7) Don't worry too much about name pronunciation with your audition. When the time comes, a pronunciation guide for all characters will be released with the project itself.

Latest Updates

  • Update - First casting announcement soon!

Thank you all so much for auditioning for the project! It's been quite a treat listening to all your hard work, and I've delighted in hearing all of the different takes on these characters that you've put forth. I'm just about ready to announce the cast for this first wave - I'm just waiting to hear back from one or two people on a couple of things. I'd like to take this time to say that if you don't get a role during this casting wave, please don't be discouraged! There are many, many, MANY more characters for this project waiting in the wings, and I feel that many of you could certainly fit one of those roles, even if you don't fit any of these first roles that have been put forth! Once again, thank you all again for your auditions. I'm really looking forward to moving forward with this project! =)
  • Audition deadline pushed back to 2/28

Thanks for the incredible response to the casting call so far! You've all put forward some really wonderful work, and I've loved listening to everyone so far. I'm pushing back the deadline just a bit to see if we can get a few more auditions for now. Thanks again!

The protagonist of the story, who awakens with no memories in a strange, snowy land with nothing more than the clothes on his back. Most would call him chronically lazy and flippant, taking any excuse to avoid work or pass a snarky comment, but when the need arises, he navigates dangerous situations with surprising intelligence and craftiness.

Voice: Closer to a grouchy middle-aged guy than a young man. Dry, wry, and frequently the dubious straight man to his eccentric allies. More casual and snarky than most of the cast, his tone is closest to normal modern vernacular. Often suffers the brunt of the story's physical comedy, so some yelping and screaming will be necessary (primarily comedic, but not always). NOTE: At times in the narrative, he has to impersonate a man of nobility. This act is convincing to other characters, so he must have a side capable of poise, dignity, and formal speech.

  • (airy, trying to make excuses to get out of work) It's called sending the right person for the right job. And besides, I don't wanna steal anyone's thunder.

  • (Pensive but wry, internal monologuing as he evaluates a plan) But the princess aside, why set a trap for me? Let's be real: I'm worth basically nothing as a hostage.

  • (flustered and confused, rising in desperation, culminating in a comedic scream of pain/terror) What the hell is going on here!? What the hell IS this!? Where the hell are we!? Oh, crap... BLAAAARGH!

The protagonist's savior and self-proclaimed "guardian." Witty, charming, and extremely competent as a combatant and an apothecary. Driven by wanderlust, she left her homeland behind to travel Yamato, and picked up Haku somewhere in the wilds. Has a passion for history and studying old myths. Her past is something of a mystery, but she may have more connections than she lets on...

Voice: Young, but not precisely "innocent," she's good-natured and cunning in equal measure--sitting around a midrange tone. Her most significant dynamic is with Haku--either slyly having fun at his expense, or flatly calling out his attempts to evade responsibility. While mostly calm and knowing, when she's flustered, she makes a big production out of it. However, there is a rarely-shown side of her that speaks with regal gravitas and more formal speech patterns. Most of the time, however, she just sounds like a laidback, well-educated traveler.

  • (thoughtful, a little sly as she ropes Haku into something) The job sounds interesting. Besides, I've always wanted to try this sort of... undercover work.

  • (exasperated) Haku... What are you trying to scheme your way out of now?

  • (warm, half chiding, half reassuring) Haku... You've got a lot of to be proud of, I think. So try not to worry so much.

As an Imperial Guard, and an experienced master of battle and politic, Oshtor is one of the most respected men in Yamato. With all the dignity of a samurai lord, he is calm, courageous, and focused on the happiness of his people. However, his high rank keeps him in the court and away from the public he serves. To better know his people and enjoy the more common pleasures in life, he disguises himself as "Ukon"--a boisterous, friendly mercenary captain.

Voice: As a man with an alter ego, this will require two separate voicings for the character as a whole, both of them in the same low-to-midrange tone. Oshtor is calm, contained, and formal--never losing his dignity or composure, and always treating others with (and commanding) respect. Ukon, however, can be rowdy, looser, and rougher around the edges; more of a friend than a commander. Neither of them should come across as forced or contrived--he's comfortable in both roles.

  • UKON: (hearty, friendly entrance, then beaming as he recognizes an old friend) Sorry to keep you waiting, ladies and gents... Satch, you old bastard! How's life?

  • UKON: (easygoing, quiet confidence) If I got one thing, it's an eye for people. And my eye's tellin' me I can trust this kid.

  • OSHTOR: (Thoughtful, calm reflection, then gentle amusement at a friend's expense) In Yamato's long history, none have ever received such honor as you did moments ago... I did say you are fated for a strange life.

OSHTOR: (grim, regal, warning of danger) Should this reach the public ear, the crime and consequence of high treason will fall to you.

Role assigned to: PlainYogurt

A scholar versed in magic, Maroro speaks in archaic, theatrical language--over-the-top Elizabethan. He's an old friend of Ukon's, but things rarely go right for him--his family's deep in debt, his goofy appearance and speech patterns keep him from winning anyone's respect, and he's a bit of a coward. Still, when someone's kind to him, he never forgets the favor--eager to do all he can for his close friends, no matter how much they try to keep him at arm's length.

Voice: Begins as comic relief, but grows serious later in the story, Maroro is a mid-to-high range voice. Some of his lines are delivered drunk, vomiting mid-line, or sobbing with comical, melodramatic emotion. The role's greatest demand will be mastering the Elizabethan speech patterns for comedy, and later, for grim intimidation. The more he is initially presented as a ridiculous fool, the more impact it will lend to later scenes of genuine sorrow and anguish, so be prepared for an actual dramatic soliloquy.

  • (Airy, extravagantly emphatic, then awestruck by the sight of a pretty lady) Prithee, time runneth but finite and my tasks are legion. (gasp) But soft! I behold a muse!

  • (overcome with joy/friendship) O, Master Haku, thou art a friend to surpass the dearest of all friends!

  • (less comic relief, more dramatic moment. Bittersweet, sad smile as he reflects on a friend's advice) As ever, thou art in the right. Let us drink down all solemnity, and drink up till dawn's light.
