Unnecessary Evils

Unnecessary Evils

Project Overview

Hello, all! I'm casting for my new animated project, Unnecessary Evils. The basic gist of it is that Dr. Silas Von Hatecraft, an over-the-top evil German scientist and his disgruntled creation/servant Vigor create a "man" out of various body parts. At first, the creature is naive to the world around him, but after Vigor is able to teach him (comedically quickly so,) he becomes 'somewhat human', albeit a bit of a drama queen.

WHAT I ASK OF IN AUDITIONS:

  • Have fun with it! Toy around with the characters and lines as you please, improv a bit if you like.
  • Please record with a quality microphone (no fans or anything in the background). If you cannot or do not have one, please try to reduce the background noise. I understand if you cannot, though. Just give it your best and give me the cleanest recording you can.
  • Record at least 2-3 takes of each line you record. If you like, you can record more and cut down to your personal favorite takes, but I need a minimum of 2 or 3 takes per line.
  • I will rarely ask for a re-do on any of the lines, it's a possibility. I'll only end up asking for one after consideration on your lines.

Dr. Silas Von Hatecraft is a rather eccentric scientist, to say the least. Having created a strange orange creature named Vigor which he uses as a lackey, it's glaringly clear his innovations and experiments are not for the benefit of humanity. Living and conducting his maniacal schemes in Castle von Hatecraft, located in the fictional town of Langweilig, Germany, he lives anything but a "normal life".

  • [For the intro to the series; Von Hatecraft stares at his creation, Frank (a Frankenstein monster akin to the Hollywood movie appearances, albeit intelligent) triumphantly and declares;] At last..! It’s alive! IT’S ALIVE!!

  • [Angrily correcting] YOU CAN NEVER HAVE ENOUGH PARTS! We're building PERFECTION here.

  • [Context: Von Hatecraft is comically using a sewing machine to stitch his creation's body parts together. His assistant, Vigor (another lead character seen here), has just asked him to use the sewing machine to perhaps create a new outfit for him.] (Small chuckle which builds into maniacal laugh) No, mein assistant. This glorious contraption is not for such barbaric purposes! I shall use this, paired with the massive pile of body parts, to birth my creation! ...In short, no, I will NOT be sewing you an outfit.

Vigor is a short, stubby orange creature as well as the first sentient creation of Hatecraft, his lab assistant and the voice of reason. He often helps around the castle/laboratory, and is actually the reason behind the remarkable intelligence of Hatecraft's human-like creation, Frank (also being the main reason why Frank resents Hatecraft, having vented many of their frustrations onto what they taught him.) Although he has human male vocal cords, Vigor is technically a creature of no determinate gender. Note his name is pronounced "Vee-Gore" as in "Igor", which his name is based on. (I imagine something KIND of akin to Minion from Megamind. You don't HAVE to go with this, though.)

  • [Normal, transitioning into shock] Another routine day, sir? How was the - Oh my GOSH, that's a lot of body parts. Do- Do we even NEED this many?

  • [Sarcasm] And by 'building perfection', you mean excessive graverobbing and reckless theft? (sigh) Figures.

  • [Context: In a comedic fashion, Von Hatecraft is going to sew together his creation with a small sewing machine.] So, can you make me, I dunno, an OUTFIT with that thing? Helloooo, I'm practically NAKED over here!

"Frank"

Role assigned to: Anthony LoGatto

Frank is, at his core, the monster from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It's the inspiration for his creation; Von Hatecraft happened to read the book (and mainly watched some of the Boris Karloff movies) and was inspired to create his own man, simply to prove that he could do it. However, once he was born, Hatecraft neglected him almost immediately and left him to Vigor, who quickly and efficiently takes it upon himself to teach Frank about the world..and also to vent their general contempt against Hatecraft. As a result, Frank is quite melodramatic, apathetic and philosophical.

  • [Basic grunts and Frankenstein-Monster noises. It's only really required for the beginning of his life, so you could even skip this if you like]

  • [Speak with contempt; you've just been taught about the world you live in and your all-around jerk of a creator.] Hello, Father.. (brief pause, abt. 1-2 secs) Yes, I can talk, no thanks to YOU.

  • Vigor taught me everything. How I was born, how you left tending to me entirely to him, and ESPECIALLY how the cruel world around us works.

Mayor Mädchen

Role assigned to: Amanda McKnight

Mayor Mädchen is a completely unexperienced bumbling buffoon of a politician, as well as an all-around dimwitted and nervous person. She'll do ANYTHING to stay within her job or avoid being kicked out onto the streets, and the outrageous projects from Castle von Hatecraft have made her job a lot harder. With the people becoming restless and afraid to have him around, she's generally tasked with devising a plan to either tame the crazy scientist or remove him from Langweilig permanently.

  • [Starts off confident, loses train of thought, and switches to sort of nervous tone] Citizens of Langweilig! I...uh...I have forgotten my speech! I will see you tomorrow!

  • [She is reading from a script which was written for an American president. Eventually she realizes the script is a bit TOO centered on America and leaves, having made a mockery of herself] My fellow Amer- I mean- People of the German commonwealth! I have made an act which shall change the history of our proud country forever! Never since the election of Abraham Lincoln have we been so...proud..of our...Americ..uh...heh..

  • [Talking privately to Hatecraft, stern, but nervous] I'm going to have to ask you to..how do i put this...G-GET RID of whatever you've been harboring in that kooky lAbOrAtoRy of yours, because I swear, if I get any more 'Crimes Against Humanity' complaints from the people, I'm gonna be out of a job before I know it! So, just to recap...that's a very hard pass on 'funding a scientific genius'.

Monika Helferin

Role assigned to: JJWalker

Monika Helferin is the timid unpaid assistant of Mayor Mädchen. Almost frightened by her own shadow, she basically only works for the Mayor because she pressures her, blackmailing her with 'secrets about her life' (in actuality, Mädchen does not have anything on her). She is to the mayor what Vigor is to Hatecraft; essentially a lackey who hates her boss (except Monika's afraid to stand up to hers.)

  • [Timid, she is afraid to bring up the topic of Hatecraft because Mayor Mädchen HATES him] Er..Ms. Mayor, the public is demanding you a-address the matter of..(brief pause, 1-2 secs.)...Dr. Hatecraft..

  • I could, perhaps, get you a script from one of the American presidents? They all mean the same thing, ma'am...

  • [After the Mayor unsuccessfully delivers a speech copied from an American president] Okay, that..d-didn't go too well..but that's okay! I propose we approach the 'good doctor' directly? Try to persuade him to...stop?
