The Silly Knight - Chapter One Reading

Project Overview

The Silly Knight is a book series I have been working on for quite a while.  It follows the main character, Sir Laughalot as he, and a quirky cast of characters explore the fantasy world of Fleur.  As a preview for the book, I am planning on releasing a video reading of chapter one.  This is a volunteer project.

The video is not an explainer video more than it is an example of what I'm looking for in voices!

Narrator/Ronia Mizrahi

As the Narrator, Ronia Mizrahi is a cheeky, upbeat person who loves to grab people's attention with her descriptions of immense detail and by acting almost too heavily involved in her words.  She should be played with a sort of fantasy-like charm, almost inseparable from the likes of a narrator in a children's cartoon.

  • Now, most of these knights were big, dirty brutes who clobbered those with whom they disagreed with, and whose only purpose was to please the king, but amidst all of them was one special knight; he didn’t clobber, he didn’t yell, he didn’t even “forget” that he needed baths.

  • Among the shocked screams and falling items, one could hear a loud, obnoxious yet unmistakably evil laughter.

  • No one said a word as Laughalot struggled to his feet before her.  The silence was not helping the already immense anxiety pent up in Laughalot’s thoughts, but he had to push forward, for the sake of Petunia!  His legs shook as his stood as tall as he could before his queen.

Sir Laughalot

Sir Laughalot is a silly - quirky is a better word for it - kind-hearted knight of Fleur.  He has rarely been respected in the knight's court, and thus has took to becoming a jester/troubadour to help bring in some money for himself.  He should be played with a soft Latin American accent, and with a bounce in each word.  Imagine, something like Lin Manuel-Miranda as the voice of Fenton Crackshell but with a little spin on it.

  • Your majesty!  I have imperative information on where that awful Apprentice took our princess, your daughter, Petunia!

  • To the castle doors, Neighsayer!  We have a princess to save!!

  • A knight in shining armor?  No, I'm more like a jester in shining armor!  At least that's what everyone else says.

Princess Petunia

Princess Petunia is the spunky, rebellious resident princess of Fleur.  She has a fire in her heart that just won't stop burning!  The main trait in her voice is the strength and pop star-ish quality - almost to the likes of Janelle Monae.

  • Uggggh when is your master getting here, this place is sooooo boring!!

  • Must you dust now? and why dust a cave, anyways?  Aren’t caves supposed to be dirty?

  • What, I’ve got like, a thousand pairs at home; I’m a princess.

The Apprentice

The Apprentice is a cocky, wizarding genius who moves much like a cat and speaks like it to.  He can get quite loud and sassy when he wants to be.  He should be played as a character similar to Shego from Kim Possible, always ready to backhand you with an insult if you get in his way.

  • I HAVE COME FOR YOUR PRINCESS, YOU WALNUTS

  • Well EXCUSE me, Princess, I didn’t know kidnapped people were supposed to be treated with entertainment

  • What I mean is that dirt is disgusting!  It gets all over your clothes and skin and makes you feel all gross, sometimes it gets under your nails and you’re like ‘gee dirt, I’m sure glad you’re all up under my nails and making my life a complete pain!  and then it gets in your eye and that’s just the worst thing ever and you’re sitting there blinking like a mad man,

Sir Feline

Sir Feline is the captain of the royal guard and he lets everyone know it.  He is so prideful of himself that he had a custom mirror made just to fit his aesthetic.  He is much like Gaston in warmth of voice, and should be played as such.

  • Oh and what do you know!  You play children’s music in the streets for crying out loud!  You insist on scrubbing your scales clean every night because you think dirt is ‘bad for you’ and ‘can make you sick’, dirt doesn’t make you sick!  Water does, everyone knows that, Giggle Boy!  Everyone!

  • It would be my honor, your majesty.

  • Of course that’s it, I am an excellent tracker and that is why I am captain and not you!

Sir Rabbitsfoot

Sir Rabbitsfoot is a man with a heart as soft as his belly.  He always sounds rather tired, with a relatively thick Latin American accent on top of that.  He should be played as if he were a sleepy care bear.

  • Oh, I’m sure he didn’t mean that, Captain!  I’m sure he is just mistaken about the size of the heel on The Apprentice’s boots!

  • Will Laughalot be coming, captain?

  • Yes, captain, you are the best!

Queen Monarch

Queen Monarch is the reigning queen of Fleur and she holds the position with a great level of skill and power.  She must be played much like Eclipsa Butterfly in dialect and stature.

  • Sir Laughalot, what business do you have interrupting a meeting of such importance?

  • My daughter has been kidnapped and you expect me to trust YOU on the job?

  • How dare you question my judgment.

King Rose

A soft man who lets his wife do most of the political work, King Rose is the much less noticed royal of the king/queen pair.  His main voice inspiration is Alan Young in the role of Mr. Flaversham.

  • You know where my daughter is?  You have to go then!

  • Honey, no!  If our daughter is in danger, it's worth the risk.

  • Ah, but, I haven't given you your present yet!

The Sorcerer

The Sorcerer, with what little lines he has in the first chapter, is a menacing force - threating most everyone he comes into contact with.  As The Apprentice's master, he is conniving and sets out to capture the princess for his own, horrible purposes.  He should be played with a Frollo-Esque vibe within his demeanor.

  • Have you captured the princess yet?

  • You belong to me, don't ever forget that.

  • I do hope you've complied with my demands.
